I am writing my essay on the ancient Roman culture from the article called Ancient Rome on world book online. There are many interesting facts on the roman culture but I chose main topics that I will talk about. I chose the following: the religion of the ancient roman’s, the family life of the romans, and the background of the roman culture. I will be sharing the reason I chose and would like to live at this time. First I will talk about the background of the roman’s background. The Roman Empire was founded by two brothers, Romulus and Remus. These two brothers disputed with each other until Romulus killed Remus, thus becoming the leader of the city which he named after himself. After the death of Romulus six kings took over the Roman Empire. The second king, Numa, introduced religious ceremonies. The Roman Empire actually began officially in 753 BC but separated in two groups, West and East empires, the reason they began to crumble was because Rome had grown too big to be governed. Secondly I will talk about the religion of the romans. The Roman’s were polytheists meaning that they worshiped multiple thousands of gods. They had a god for just about anything you could think of. They had a god of the sea, Neptune, a god of war, mars, and even a god of love, cupid. The Roman’s would adopt most of their ideas from the Greeks and would build shrines for their gods. Every person would have their favorite god but the three main gods were Jupiter, the supreme god, Juno, and Minerva. If you didn’t believe the way the Roman’s did they actually would call them atheist because they didn’t believe in all the gods that the romans did. Lastly I will be talking about the roman family life. Most of the children’s education would be in their house with the parent’s supervision. They family life was very strange, the sons and daughters couldn’t own land until their father died so they would get married and still live with their parents. Most marriages were arranged and girls legally could get married at age twelve, but guys couldn’t get married until they were fourteen. The times have changed and although it doesn’t make sense the families back in those times would have been closer in their relationships because they were together all the time and now families are almost never together. As you can see there were many differences in times today than times back in the day, but I chose this culture because I thought that it was a very unique culture. I have learned a lot about this culture and have refreshed my memory on subjects I had already known. And although they had many false beliefs they were very intelligent people. I think I would like to live in that time period because I have always been interested in the Roman mythology and think that it would be really cool to learn it firsthand by those who believed the myths.
