Homework 4, Due September 4, 2009

The last couple of weeks the assignments have required you to do some outside reasearch and investigation. This week is a reflective assignment, and I hope that you will put some serious thought into your answers.

As president, George Washington created a group of advisors called a "cabinet." Since Washington is considered such an icon, the name has become a permanent part of our political system. The first cabinet had only three members: Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of War. Today the cabinet consists of many more departments, and the Department of War has a warmer, friendlier name: the Department of Defense. If you were president, what kind of individuals would you seek to fill cabinet posts? Today, which three cabinet secretaries have the most important responsibilities and why do you think so?

Historical setting: George Washington served as president from 1789 to 1797. His Secretary of State was Thomas Jefferson; his Secretary of the Treasury was Alexander Hamilton; his Secretary of War was General Henry Knox.

Be sure your essay is at least 200 words, and you must repsond to at least two of your classmates' submissions (total of 150 words). Keep your essays on topic (answer the actual questions that are posed in the assignment!) and read your classmates' responses carefully before providing feedback.

Thanks for your hard work, guys - you're doing a great job!

  1. If I was President, I would appoint individuals with experience with that certain office. Also they could not have a criminal record and not be insane. I care more about certain cabinets than I do others. I am a republican, but I will appoint people who are going to do the right thing such as less governmental control during a weak economy. I would never appoint anyone who was going to spend trillions of dollars on stuff we do not really need. My top three would be defense, treasury, and energy. Defense was my top because without a strong military, well, just think what North Korea could do. Treasury was my second because without someone making money we would not have the basis for an economy. We need someone in charge of money. Energy was third because we are now using more energy than we ever did; we do need more ways to produce energy. I wish we had more nuclear plants, since uranium is more plentiful than oil; also nuclear fission is way more efficient than oil. What we should do is using what we have now, but start programs to find alternatives for energy; one of them being nuclear fusion.

  2. If I were the President of the United States of America, the people that I would put in office would have to know a lot about that office and department and what it does, and be very knowledgeable on the subjects of that department. They would also probably need to have some experience with the kind of stuff that that particular office does. I would want people with good morals and values. The most important thing would be someone who is good at that job and someone who can really benefit the country.

The three most important departments…This is a pretty hard choice since most of the cabinets are very important to our executive branch of government. But I think I would choose the original three: the Department of State, the Department of Treasury, and the Department of Defense (war). Foreign affairs are obviously very important. Our relationships with other nations should be a high priority. The treasury is important because how we as a nation spend the money in our treasury can lead to either very good or very bad things. The Department of Defense (should still be called war) is also very important, because if we don’t have a respectable military, our nation could cease to exist. There are many other very important ones like Justice, Commerce, and Labor; you also have Health and Human Services and Energy, and pretty much every department has an important role in the cabinet.

  3. One thing I do know for sure is that if I were President, I would want to fill the cabinet posts with people who have plenty of over-all experience-not just in that particular area. Something else that I think would be important is that they have a Christian worldview. I'm not saying that they would have to be republicans necessarily, but right now we do have a lot of cabinet members who are very liberal and do not seek to God's advice in wit the decisions they make.A person that comes to mind when I think about the kind of cabinent members I would want would be Condoleeza Rice. She definitely did a great job as the Secrecy of State for George bush in that she had experience in that area and truly wanted to follow God's plan for her. When I think about what three cabinent secretaries have the most importan responsibilities, it's a tough decision because I really do feel that all of them are extremely important. However, if I had to choose, it would be Secretary of Treasury, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Homeland Security. The Secretary of Treasury is important because not only does it print money but it controls the economic and tax policy, manages public debt, and and collects all taxes. So obviously this department is very important. I chose secretary of State because without it we would not have safety in traveling, someone to deal with foreign affairs, or someone to initiate conferences with other countries. This conrtibutes much to our safety as a nation which brings me to my last choice, which was Secretary of Homeland Security. You may not think that this one is one of the most important jobs just by looking at it, but I think it is because it helps with protecting us from more terrorist attacks and other issues that could potientially be at all threatening to our country. Guarding the nation's borders is just one example of what they do. Like when you have to go through baggage checks and all that in an airport to be able to enter or even re-enter our country is pretty hardcore with all the security and pre-cautions they take in determining whether or not you can come in. It's something that just has to be done.
When I was thinking about which cabinents would be most important, I also paid attention to the order in presidential succession. I noticed that the secretary of state is third in line and treasury is fourth. This isn't what determined my decision but it made me think that if those cabinet secretaries come right after the president pro-tempre, they must be of great importance.

  4. I would agree with John Bird, I mean he basically reworded what I said. However, the cabinets’ importance may change over time as new issues may arise. Congress created new cabinets as new issues arose; this is why we have so many cabinets today.

  5. I entirely agree with Anna Katherine. She also said what I said. Except she added one important detail which I left off. Having your countries leaders have the same basis as your constitution is a good idea. I don't really care what political party they are, as long as they have the right intuitions with the right ideas, kind of like JFK and Ronald Reagan. I also agree with the cabinet part. Those are some very important cabinets. You even used one I used. I had forgotten about Homeland Security; it would have easily replaced energy. Good job, yours was kind of lengthy, though. I especially liked the Christian part.

  6. When it comes down to me being president (i hope they'd have a better standby than little ole' me) I would chose christian cabinet members that had experience in the necessary fields. In my own opinion I think that when it comes down to the most important part of my cabinets it would have to be Defense. I would seek out a man with military experience who loved and prioritized his God and country. A person who looked out for his countries freedoms by removing threats from abroad. (ones that posed immediate threat to us or Israel) His views would have to be conservative as with all my cabinets. I couldn't have liberals running around saying "We can't fight we're weak!" on national television.
Up next would be homeland security. I'd have to have the same requirements as for defense. But the priorities though similar would require a familiarity with all state military and police forces. Last but not least would be Secretary of state. I'd chose a conservative christian person who could very easily explain my plans and brief the joint chiefs on all situations. I feel like broken record. I have the same basic requirements for all my offices and they all involve keeping american lives safe. I hope thats not a problem.

  7. Choosing individuals to be apart of my cabinet would be a very tough decisions if I were really put in that position. There are many things they would have to qualify for to be in it, however, so not just everyone can get in.

My cabinet members would first of have to be Christians. Not just your everyday Christian, but someone who is really seeking God for guidance while in office. Everyday life is hard without Christ, so how in the world to politicians and people in high
positions expect to do well without Him?

I would also probably wont someone who has lots of experience in that area. For example, the Secretary of Defense would need to have been in a situation were he understands what it is like to be in war. The Secretary of State would need to be familiar with what is happening in other countries and be able to handle conflict between us and other countries.

They would need to agree with most of what I agree on. (This is just a “what if” right?) If we agreed on most topics then communicating, passing bills, etc would be a breeze. If I choose someone who doesn't agree on most topics, especially the important ones, then that would just be a hindrance to Cabinet.

I would probably choose someone I am good friend with or like a lot. I wouldn't interview someone, like what they stand for, and then hire them that day. I need to get to know them, you know, make sure their the real deal. Friendship is very important after all and definitely helps.

That's all I can think of at the moment, I know that wouldn't be all I look for, but definitely some of the main things I would want to find in a person.

The three cabinet secretary positions I think are most important are Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense and Secretary of Education. Secretary of State is important for keeping peace with other nations to avoid war and discomfort between them and us. However, not all countries want to be friendly toward us and want to start wars between us or our other friends. That is why the Secretary of Defense is important because he does the best he can to control war matters and end them the best way they can. The Secretary of Education is very important because the children are the future as it is often said. It is getting harder and harder to keep kids in school and to give them a reason to do good. We need to be giving kids good education so they can grow up to be strong leaders.

  8. Choosing the correct people for the cabinet would be such a weighted job. If I were President, I would look for very specific qualities. The individual would have to have a history of the cabinet they would be working in. Examples like, the Secretary of Defense would have to have an extended history in war. They would also have to work well with others and have the ability to listen to what others say; but stand firm in what they know is right. The individual would have to be able to lead, but listen. If I had to choose members of the cabinet, they would have to be a well-rounded person with a variety of attributes.

In today’s government, there are many more than three cabinets, and I assume they are all important and have a very specific role in our ongoing national community. The three I would elect as most important would be Department of Treasury, Department of Defense, and Department of Education.

Department of Treasury. This department is becoming more and more important. The financial situation of America can make or break us. Although we say money is not the most important thing, it is a prominent topic. The money in America does change lives. As we see in the economic downturn, it’s hard to think how influential money is on our lives. If we did not have the Department of Treasury, where would we be? How would the financial system be affected?

Department of Defense. History proves to us that this is a very important position. America is a great nation. We have so many things that other countries want. If we did not have an organized way of handling our defense, how would our protection change? The order we can maintain within the country will definitely benefit us when we have issues with outside communities.

Department of Education. This one is farther down on the list, but I believe it is one of the most important. Education is the key to so many things. The literacy of the people of America reflects on our everyday lives. The individuals we come in contact with, our job market, and so many other parts of our lives reflect our education. This department keeps the order of things and allows us to have better opportunities. We see the benefits from the well workings of this department.

  9. Colby, I like what you said about choosing a person with whom you had a friendship. I think that having a personal relationship would allow more open communication in the government. This also goes with the Secretary of State who travels and represents America. The relationships they develop with these countries can be very important to us. So overall, good relationships are a benefit to the country. Whether it is in the ruling government or with an opposite country. They all hold responsibility.

  10. I really agree with what Jacob said. The cabinet members need to have experience in their necessary field. When you do something for the first time, you always have questions. You don’t know the definites and are more likely to mess up. They are leaders. If they have the proper experience, we don’t have to worry about what will happen to us. We can have confidence they know exactly what they are doing. I want to be led by good people who love their positions and want what’s best for the people. An individual is more likely to do the best job if they are experienced.

  11. I like what everyone has said so far. I am not sure why I didn't choose the Department of Treasury, but it would be a close third. We desperately need someone in this government today who can handle our huge money problem and multi-trillion dollar debt. I would need to get someone who doesn't feel we need to spend 700 billion dollars to get us out of multi-trillion dollar debt. I would defintely make sure I have the right person before I would ever let someone run that position.

  12. Well if I were president, I would need good strong people (male and female) to fill the positions of my cabinet. Such person would have to be a Christian, this is so we dont have someone trying to convince the nation that Islam is the way or something like that. They would have to be honest and trustworthy. I wouldnt put someone in power that i dont have confidence and trust in. The persons must have a clean record as Jaykub said, we dont need criminals running this nation. And they better know the system and how it works.

The three most important departments, in my opinion, are: the department of defense, the department of treasury, and the department of education. The reason I chose those in that order are because if we dont have a good defense, we are vulnerable for attack. Without the department of treasury we would have no records of funds spent and recieved and such like that, and the department of education because we all need education and without it, we will not be as prosperous as the rest of the world and will not be prepared for life in the future. The future is what were working for.

  13. If I were put in the great position of being able to chose my own cabinet there would be a variety of skills and attributes I would look for. My top priority would most definately be they must be a Christian. Not just someone who claims Christianity as their religion (like a lot of people these days), but an individual who whole-heartledly lived for Christ. I had a friend tell me one time, "we don't need Christian leaders, they just need to be good ones." When that person made that comment, I laughed. If you're a Christian, you have to have leaders who have the same views as you; that's like a basic. So first and foremost, the man or woman must be a devoted Christian. Also, they would need to be highly educated, and overly qualified in their department. I am a conservative-republican, so (obviously) I would choose people who had the same conservative veiws I do. (Anti-abortion; Anti-homosexuality etc.) They would also need to be well-rounded, a strong leader, have a solid work ethic and be loyal to their country
Now as for the most important departments:

    1. Department of Denfense:

Our former volleyball coach (Coach Ronnie) used to say, "You can win a game playing defense well." The same is true with America. If our army is weak, and we go off to fight a war..we are going to lose. The Department of Defense is there to help us..well win. It keeps America safe and strong.

    2. Department of Educatioin:

Highschool drop-outs, grades slipping, test scores dropping,...compared to other countries we are not where we should be. The Dept. of Education watches all of these statistics and says "we need to do this, or stop this, or whatever." It's there to give insure American children are getting a good, solid education that will further not only themselves, but also our country. The Dept. of Education is a great example of where we need strong Christian leaders. We need to make sure truth is being taught in school, not things like evolution, or tolerance (in the sense of You're okay, I'm okay, it's all good and great.) If these are a childs foundation...well America won't be standing too long.

    3. Department of the Treasury:

The love of money is the root of all evil, that doesnt mean money itself is evil. Think about it money is an important part of all of our lives. It has a direct effect on our families, friends, our economy. If I were president, I would appoint someone who had a good Biblical view of money. They plan well, the look towards the future of our nation, and prepare accordingly.

Being president would be an incredible privilege, but also a momentous responsibility. I just hope I would do my country justice in appointing the right people for the right jobs.

  14. If I was chosen for some weird reason as President I would choose Cabinet members that had strong Christian morals and beliefs. They would have to have a strong education in the government and the department they would be in.

I think that all of the many departments of the Cabinet play a crucial role in helping America be such a incredible country but the three departments I chose were the Department of Defense, Department of State, and the Department of Treasury. The Department of Defense is so extremely important because it is what manages America's military and protects America from many threats. The Department of State is important because it is what manages America's foreign affairs and keeps peace between countries that play an important part in trade for America. The Department of Treasury is important because it is what takes hardworking American's tax dollars and puts them into good use throughout the country.

Those are the most important to me but they all work togethor to give the President the advice the he needs to make the big decisions that might make or break the country. The President can usually be thought of as the man with the big ideas but without the help of his Cabinet he is basically nothing.

  15. I really had to agree with what Colby Upton had to say about wanting his cabinet members to have experience in that area which they would be in. Experience is always a good quality to a person because they know what they are going up against so they don't get completely overwhelmed with everything they have to deal with.

  16. I think what Caleben had to say about the Department of Energy was excellent. America is at a state where we are very dependable on various types of energy. Many of it produces lots of pollution which is harmful to the environment therefore the Department of Energy does need to work on other ways to produce electricity that aren't harmful to the environment.

  17. If I had the privilege to become President of the United States, picking a cabinet would be of the utmost importance to me. In the President's Cabinet, there are only 14 positions. This small group of people have the enormous responsibility of keeping the United States of America up and running.

So, bearing that in mind, I wouldn't exactly pick some random person off of the street to fill one of these crucial positions. My secretaries would have to be extremely well-educated. I would expect them to have a lengthy knowledge on the Department they are seeking to be in charge of. This would be an absolute must for me: YOU MUST BE A CHRISTIAN TO BE IN MY CABINET. Under no circumstances will I accept anyone who supports abortion, homosexuality, evolution, atheism, etc. etc. I know I wouldn't be the most popular President for requiring those standards, but thats my policy. My position, this great gcvernment, and this great nation, was founded on the belief that GOD is the Rock, GOD is the reason we have prospered as a nation. Take GOD out of that equation, and I'd say that we wouldn't have won the American Revolution.

O.k, now on to the three Cabinet positions that I feel are the most important...

1)Secretary of Defense: The title says it all. Without armed forces, the United States would not exist. Our armed forces have so much history and are undoubtebly the best in the world. Millions of people are paid by the armed forces, and it keeps our economy going strong.

2)Secretary of Homeland Security: This Department hasn't been around long, it was formed after the terrible tragedy on September 11th, 2001. It was formed for one purpose: to protect the American Homeland. The DHA run the airport checkpoints, they handle intelligence and act on threats they receive.

3)Secretary of Justice(AKA Attorney General): The DJ is the citizens of America counsel in the court system. It includes thousands of lawyers, federal agents, and federal investigators. Several government agencies are a part of this branch of the Cabinet. An example would be the DEA (Drug Enforcment Agency). This agency is responsible for enforcing the bans the United States Government has placed on drugs and the limitations of drugs.

  18. Emily, it is scary to think about how the United States economy would be affected if we did not have the Department of Treasury. The money distribution system would not exist, in fact, I would say there would be no money haha. I would also say that the dollar would have no value in other countries, so the Stock Market would also suffer.

Anyway, very good essay Emily, I enjoyed reading it. Good job.

  19. Jaykub, you never cease to amaze me haha. I love what you wrote about the Department of Defense. When a country has a stong military, it seems like other countries will do anything to keep you happy. On the flip side of that, if a country has a weak military (headed by liberals who do to much talking) other countries will begin to bully the country. Kinda scary huh?

Very nice work Jaykub, sounds like you'd make some good decisions in the big chair.

  20. Sam I love what you said about taking God out of the equation. I know I talk about it A LOT, but it's something I'm incredibly passionate about. The biggest problem in America today is NOT the economy, the leaders we have, the war, abortion, homosexuality, Hollywood, or gas prices; the direct root of the majority of these issues is, we as a country have allowed the Bliblcal, ethical principles our country was founded on, to be forgotten. Just like you said, Sam, God is the only reason we've come this far. It'll end too, if we don't get back to where we should be.
Btw, I love reading your essays; it's obvious you put a ton of effort into them.

  21. The first and foremost I would like to say I would make and awesome president. Well the most important depart the one that is at the top of my list would be the Department of Commerce. Getting this country’s economy on the rise again is the only way to bring this country back into its once very high standing. We've never defaulted on a debt and I wouldn't plan on letting some clumsy lazy bum carry the weight of this department on his shoulders and let him spend a couple trillion dollars putting us in more debt. I would hire a very knowledgeable and able individual to run this department.

Maybe a person with a very high standing math and economic background that would make him an individual worthy of having to work in this department seeing as if you make a wrong decision you destroy the country. I would choose someone readily available to handle the pressure and have God leading his every step. I would also like it to be someone I knew having a relationship with the people you appoint can be very important. Making decisions can be hard if you never done it so they would also have to be very experienced.

The second department I would choose is the department of treasury someone keeping track of our money and knowing where its going is very important. Knowing who is spending our money and where it is going out to if it is necessary to spend it on this or that informing me when they think that something would be a bad decision in long term would be very important. Yes, I would listen to advice from anyone that had to give it to me, and I would truly give it thought so I would make decisions that would produce results that were fitting for our wonderful country. Making American lives better would be my goal. Getting the economy where it needs to be, would be the start of that. The person I would choose to hold this position would be a person that had common sense and knowledge in math and economics. This would be a deciding factor and a very important thing to me.

Finally, I would choose the department of defense this is also very important in stimulating the economy having a war is very good for the economy. It makes jobs for people the army and everyone else fighting needs weapons and ammo. You also need people to make them this would bring further stimulation to the economy and would greatly help it. Having a person that was knowledgeable in war someone that used to be a very important war general and that knew a lot and had a large amount of experience. This would help in this department because having knowledgeable general would really be important in this. He would have to be up to date with the latest technology too cause you know it's important that he know how to defend our country.

I know I would make a great president thank you thank you no need for applause but this is what I would think to be the most important departments. Having a good economy affects everything else that we do. So this is why I chose what I did.

  22. Being the president of United States is a very challenging roll to fill. You must be a person of wisdom, integrity ,and humility.

The individuals that I would choose to be in my cabinet would be people that are trustworthy, good solid character; their words and walk are consistent. Strength
and stamina to work hard and not wear down. Always "comes through", no excuses, job delegated-job done. Has high influence over others is able to keep learning as the job expands. Is able to draw people and develop them. Not afraid of change, flows as the situation demands. The ability to sense and discern a situation without having all the facts.

I have always felt the Secretary of Defense has a very important job Their main responsibility to advise the president as to what needs to happen to protect the United States.

The Secretary of Health and Human Services is responsible for human conditions and concerns in United States. This includes advising the president on matters of health and welfare and income security program. The health of America is vital for the stability for our country.

Secretary of State concerns our foreign affairs. The Secretary is a member of the presidents cabinet and the highest-ranking cabinet secretary both in line of succession and order of precedence. The people who serve in the cabinet must go in with no agenda, but to serve our nation for its best interest.

  23. Ok, if I were the president I would want the people in my cabinet to be Christians. People that had a good relationship with God. These people would have to be experienced the area that they would be working in and enjoy doing it. (If I had a bunch of drugged up thieves on my cabinet I'm prity sure we wouldn't get very far).

I would also want people that are looking at the mistakes of the past to improve the future. If you don't learn from the past, then what good is it to have one? My saying is, If you mess up, you either fix it, or clean up the mess. Simply put, don't mess up.

The departments that I think are the most important are the original three. The departments (secretary) of state, treasury, and war (defense). But I also think that education is important too.

Treasury: the person that I would have in this position would first of all have to have a squeaky clean record. This person would also have to be good with a budget. With our numbers growing so rapidly we will naturally have to spend more, but we don’t need to spend too much.

War: the person that I would want for this job would be a person with a long military background. This person would need to know about the other country’s military and how they operate, and most importantly, be a good, strong leader.

I really couldn’t choose between state and education so I’m doing both.

State: this person would have to be good at lots of stuff. They would have to be; a good public speaker, someone that people liked, aware of the things happening with the people, and someone that people feel comfortable talking to.

Education: this person would have to have a background in education. They would also need to be familiar with the things that our kids will need to learn to better the world and themselves. This person shouldn’t be afraid of admitting that they are wrong, because lets face it we all are once in a while.

(No, I didn't take what Mr.Akers said in class today about our histroy. I wrote it last night.)

  24. Oh gosh this is a hard one but i'll give it my best shot.
Well if I were president I would probably do a horrible job at it and have emotional break downs everyday. But for real if I were president I would make sure that the people I had in the cabinet would be responsible, wise, strong (like emotionally strenght), and good Christian people. I think that the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, and they Secretary of Commerce are very important. I'll start with the Secretary of State. I think this position is important because they go to the different counrties on behalf of the president and the United States. To build strong relationships. They also work any other problems out that there may be between the U.S. and other countries. Now on to the secretary of defense. I think this position is also important because it takes care of the military and armed forces. He keeps the president informed of all military situations. And lastly the secretary of commerce. This individual deals with the economy here in the U.S. as well as imports, exports, and foreign trade.

  25. Biggin, I agree with you that being a president would be hard work. As you said, this person would have to posses wisdom, integrity, and humility. But not just that. This person would have to have a willingness to learn from others, help the people, be there when needed, and so many other things.

    ReplyDelete
  26. If I were president... Hmmm... Probably not a good idea huh?
Anyway if I was the president choosing cabinet members I think that I would be pretty picky about it.
First and foremost they would definitely need to be Christians. And when I say Christians I dont mean that they just claim to be but they show it in their everyday actions. They would also need an interest in doing what is best for this country and its people. They would also need to be honest and of course if they are true Christians than no prob right. They also need experience in politics and the cabinet they are selected for. Respect is another one. If they didnt have respect for the people, other cabinet members, and me I really dont think it would work to well. I would also like someone who isn't afraid to speak out and stand up for whats right. I certainly dont want someone just sitting uo there not caring whats going on or what is wrong and right. Theres just a few standards I would follow if choosing cabinet members.

The three most important cabinets... This is a hard decision. Everyone of the cabinets is important but the three most important in my opinion would be ...
The Secretary of Defense, The Secretary of State, and the Department of Education.

The Department of Defense is very important. Without the Department of Defense the U.S. would have no defense system. We would not have an army or anything like that and therefore would have no protection agaist attacks and such. Without the Department of Defense we really would have no organization for our military. They are responsible for coordinating and supervising all the agencies and functions of the security and military of the U.S. Our offesive and defensive efforts depend quite a bit on the Deprtment of Defense.

Department of State is very important as well. Without it we wouldn't be able to negotiate well at all with other countries. The Department of State deals with all foriegn affairs. They protect U.S. citizens traveling abroad. They deal with foreign military affairs and international crime. The also maintain diplomatic relations with many other countries. Without the Department of State we would have a very hard time keeping our relations with other countries up and therefore not being able to trade and negotiate and stay out affairs we dont want to be a part of.

The Department of Education is very important.
It is very important to the amount and quality of our education. They supply finacial aid to people. They set standards. They help to introduce new teaching tecniques. Provide disabled children with the tutoring they need. Help with school safety. So just to name a few the department of education is very important. Without it I dont think our education would be as good. And education is extremely important.

  27. Hmm, another History scenario. Lets see...

As everyone who has previously posted has stated, I would definitely choose someone who has experience. And guys, a few years as senator DOES NOT make you experienced. I'm talking 20+ year involvement in politics. Along with that, they must have no record of scandal. I think if they tried something stupid once in their teenage life, that would be forgiven, but no major criminal offenses. Christian Values are always a major, major plus. ( I know I'm going to get all kinds of heat from people for saying this, so forgive me now.)However, I don't think an anti-abortion, anti-homosexuality, anti-evolution, anti-evolution, candidate is totally unqualified for office. Now before you pick up your Bible and pitch forks, keep reading. I would NOT EVER put anyone into office that would push these views on the nation, aka a liberal extremist. But guys, seriously, if a candidate has all the right qualities, it would not be wise to completely right him off just because he is an atheist, etc. I'd pick a well qualified, Christian individual first any day, but those are few and far in between. And I'm generally not in favor of the liberal opinions, but if they have good ideas about fixing the economy and maintaining stable foreign affairs, they've got my support. This 'probably' wasn't a good can of worms to open up, especially since I pretty much agree with Sam's essay. My point in all of that was that politicians with foolish views on controversial subjects can still contribute to society.

Now onto a light issue: which three departments of the cabinet do I find most important?
First: Department of the Treasury. EVERYTHING about a country revolves around its its economic stability, or, basically its financial welfare. If a country doesn't have the financial basis, it cannot fund its army, its trade will suffer, education, agriculture, and literally every other aspect of the state of the union will deteriorate.
Second: Department of Defense. Without a strong national standpoint, hostile takeover is inevitable. Again, when a foreign country takes over, all other aspects of state of the union fall apart.
Third: Department of Justice. Internal stability is crucial to a country's survival. A healthy judicial system is part of this. Maintaining order and punishing violators are both an important part of this aspect.

That's my 2 cents. I apologize for the novel.

  28. Ashley, I would be right there with you on the emotional breakdown thing. LOL. I wouldn’t be able to hadal it at all. Which brings up the often disputed question, should a woman be president? ;)

  29. Sam Wier I completely agree with you on the people you pick for the cabinets being Christians. I think its very important and I certainly wouldnt want people in there who dont care and are dishonest and so on. Being the secretary of a cabinet is a very big position to fulfill and I wouldnt trust it into the hands of just any person. I think that what you said is very true.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with what Hannah had to say about wanting people to look at mistakes of the past so that they can better the future. That is a very important thing because if you can understand the mistakes of the past you can somewhat predict what might happen a couple of years into the future and try to avoid it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jake I agree and disagree with you. But mostly disagree. I personally think (and this is just my opinion and I'm not puting you down for yours because you can have you opinion also) but I believe it is to upmost importance to have a Christians filling that position. I by all means wouldnt want some abortionist, or homosexual, or athiest or anything like that. But you are right a strong Christian thats qualified for that position are few and far between. So I guess if you must put a person that isn't a Christian in there than you must. And it wouldn't be an awful bad thing ( I guess)just as long as they weren't like trying to push their veiws on everyone. So I dont think your completely wrong on what you said I just dont think an abortionist or atheist or homosexual supporter would be a good choice at all and personally people like that would be on the very bottom of my list if on there at all. =]

  32. If I were Pesident of the United States today, and I was choosing my cabinet, I would look at three specific things. First I would make sure that these people knew the resposibilities of this spot in the cabinet. They would need to know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. Involved with this would be their experience. My cabinet would be loaded with experience in their positions. Second, all my cabinet members would be both good under pressure and good problem solvers. You don’t want someone backing you who is going to fold when the time comes, or just not come through when there is a problem. Third, and most importantly, my cabinet members would have good leadership qualities. Someone with that much responsibility must be a good leader.

To me the three most important cabinet spots are the Secretary of State, Secretary of Treasury, and Secretary of Defense. First, the Sec. of State is there to preserve laws, which is one thing that we really need. Someone to hold true to our foundation. Secondly, our economy is backed by our Sec. of Treasury. Our nation is set up on an economy, no treasury no economy, no economy no nation. And lastly the Sec. of Defense. This onespeaks for itself. We need someone to protect our counrty as best they can.

  33. Morgan,
I definitely recognize your point. Its very valid. When we elect a Canaanite into any political position, it gives them at least some profound power.

Abraham Lincoln put it well when he said "Give a man power, and you'll see what is in his heart". With all that in mind, I completely understand why you disagree. And I sort of came across wrong with my post.

The point I was trying to make was that God can use anyone according to his will; regardless if they are godly people or not. I think that while Christian's are certainly my number one pick, our nation isn't totally doomed with a non-believer. We just need to keep them in our hearts and prayers.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Jacob,
I agree with your post. I like how you brought out the point that the members need to be good problem solvers. It takes ingenuity to fix an economy. It's not a defined science, so it would be understandable that creativity would be needed to find a solution.

  35. Chuck, i like with what you said in answering this question. I do agree with you. Commerce, Treasury, and, defense are three very important departments of the cabinet. you made some very solid points as the requirements for the positions, and you put emphasis on the economy, which is a very vital part of a nation. good answer

  36. If i were a President i would have a cabinet full of wise advisors to give me the correct advise and help me make smartr decisions. They would also be resistant to temptation and not give into peer preasure. Also good dealing with problems and make write decesions

The three main cabinet spots are are..
First is the secretary of defence because our country need to able to defend its self in times of strugle.
Second is the Secretary of Treasure to help keep our country out of a second Great Depresion
Last but not least important is the Secretary of State to help make good decesions for our country and keep it in line.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Jakob i agree with you on how you said your cabibet members need to be responsible and good decesion makers

    ReplyDelete
  38. Emily i totslly agree with you on how the members of your cabinet would need experience in the spot you put them in so they will kno what they are doin and not crack under preassure

    ReplyDelete
  39. You had a good, answer, Emily. i agree with you about the kind of people that you would want in the cabinet positions. i think those are very important qualities. I think that the department of defense and the department of defense are two of the most important ones. I think the department of education is important, but i dont agree with it being top three. we definitely do need smart people to lead us and work in our nation in the future, but i think that as long as the education department is running smoothly, there are a few others that should have a little more focus. great post. i like it.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If I was President, which would be very odd, choosing my cabinet members would be a very difficult decision. I would choose someone based on their experience and education in that department and not based on politics or who was the popular person for the position. It would be nice if they were a Christian, but frankly that wouldn’t be my top-most priority.
As for the three most important departments, this is what I think:
Department of Homeland Security. This department is responsible for us having to wait in those long lines major buildings and events just to have our bags searched, but it’s for our safety. They defend our nation from terrorists and other threats to our national security.
Department of Justice. This department is pretty much self-explanatory. They are the reason we have police officers and investigators. They make sure they law is carried out and followed; otherwise everything would be chaos.
Department of State. The department of state is head by-of course- the Secretary of State who is responsible for ensuring that our relationships with other nations is excellent, and if not, agreeing to treaties and other such things to keep the peace.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If I was the president of the United states i would choose people i knew and that had pure values. Ones that i could trust and also have a great conversation with them. I would choose good Christ like people and ones that aren't afraid to share there opinion with me. They would also be very well experienced with what position that there working with. They would be wise, respectful, and caring for there nation.
The three most important Departments to me are, The Department of Agriculture, Department of Defense, and Department of Education.
Department of Agriculture because it deals with trade, food safety, and natural resources. And it even makes sure that there is hunger in the United States and fosters rural communities.
Department of Defense because it ensures our safety and it manages with our military. Without our military where would we be? Our soldiers are our very hands of our nation and without them there would be no America.
Department of Education because its more organized and it runs all of the skool systems and sets regulations for our education.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well, I would have to agree with what Charity said about how she would want the leaders she chose to be respectful of thier nation, and not too afraid to be open and honest with her. That's what I would want too. It would be really bad to have someone in those cabinet postions that you couldn't fully trust or that might hide some information from you or be too afraid to speak up on thier opinions. Where on earth would we be if we didnt stand up for what we believe in by being bold enough to express our thoughts and beliefs because we were too afraid?

    ReplyDelete
  43. really to adress the type of person i would want in my cabinet it is very easy. first, i would look for someones values. i would see how they treated someone when they were around and when they weren't. i would see how they handled their finances and budgeted their money. second, i would look into their background and see where they came from and who they have been associated with. third, i would look at their political and religious views; for instance if they were pro-life or pro-death.

today i think the secretary of state has one of the most important roles in that they deal with international affairs and are seen as a face of my sdministration all of the world.
nxt i think the secretary of defense is very important because he/she is responsible for things such as military that keep americans free and also is usually someone with military experiance that is very inteligant in the ways of war that i may not be so familiarly aquanted with. and last, i think the secretary of the treasury is very important. though looked over many times i think our finances are something that need to be watched by someone who is both inteligant and experianced so that though our debt is always going to exist it can be reduced by the the right methods. if there is agood secretary of treasury than many other organizational parts of the government will be funded such as education and transpertation.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i totally agree with you jakub, i think its most important to remember experiance and that most of all ppl need to be able to stand under pressure which means they have a good track record and will be able to back u.

    ReplyDelete
  45. biggin i think you point out a very good point. it is very important that our president is experiance and exuiped in both intelligence and a good cabinet. i think your comment about walkin the walk and talkin the talk hits the nail on the head. consistency like jakub said i think you both said it perfectly, i totally agree. definately defense is is important but i think u bring out a great point in the secretary of health and human services is important but at the same time i think it should be limited to prevent socialistic views from affecting our nation. i think the church is copletely capable of taking care of americas citizens. but i agree the importance of the department is something that in our day is neccessary. i think the secretary of state is defenately important and i think you nailed it because our foreign affairs are neglected wat is our image in the world, allies today are very important and loosing an allie because of neglagence is outragious and i think u definately said it right

    ReplyDelete
  46. I like how Jakob put it when he said that he would not want someone who might choke under pressure or fold when the time comes or when things get hard. Unfortunately, that's how some people are; they will show up and do whatever they need to when it's easy or convenient for them, but then they abandon ship when the storms come. If you know someone is dependable, obviously, you will never doubt that they will fulfill thier duties. For some people, pressure is a way of pushing them and motivating them to do really well. Others just can't handle it. That's why you need strong and dependable cabinet members, for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Well, if I were president, I would appoint individuals to the cabinet that have good experience in that certain area. They would definitely have to be experts in that area and know a lot about how it works. Also, I would make sure that the person has the ability to take initiative and come up with brilliant ideas in tough situations. On top of that, I would need to know if they were responsible and able to face adversity and trying times (like bad economy, war, etc.). For example, I don’t think I’d want to have a secretary of defense that would panic when we’re threatened by another country or something. But, most importantly, I would go after people that are truly Christians that fear God (not politicians that say they’re “ religious” just to be politically correct). I would search for people that would deal with situations in a way that would give glory to God alone.
Today, I think the three most important cabinet departments based on responsibilities are defense, treasury, and state. Defense is obviously vital. The secretary of defense has to know good strategies for defending the country in case of attack. He has to make sure our military is well supplied and ready. With everything he has to keep in touch with, the secretary of defense has quite a bit on his plate. The secretary of state has an important job, because he (or she) has to manage our foreign relations. That is VERY important. That person tries to negotiate with other nations and keep us on their good list. That person has a ton of responsibility because they represent the US often. Another grueling job is to be the secretary of treasury. That person has a big effect on the economy. He has to know how to use money wisely and keep us on the up and up. These aren’t ranked from most important to least important, but they are the three most important.

  50. This is a very interesting thing to think about. When most people think about being put in this very important position they only think about what they would gain from it or what they would change. Nobody thinks about who they would place in their cabinet. I would want different types of people for different positions. for example I would not want some one without military experience in the position of secretary of war. Other than the things that differ among the different spots I would want someone who is of good morals and who is a Christian. It is also very important that the person be trust worthy, so you know that they will not take bribes. They will also have to be well educated. By this I mean they would need to have real world experience in what they are doing.
Now on to the next part of the question. Which one of the positions is the most important. In my opinion the secretary of war is the most important position on the presidential cabinet. The reason I think this is because without an army our nation would not be here to need a secretary of anything. So as you can see the secretary of war is a very important job.

    ReplyDelete
  51. If I was the President of the United States Of America(which I think is a bad idea!!) I would appoint members that had actual experiance with the department and knew what the department did. In myown opinion the Secretary of Defense has the most responsibilities. My Secretary of Defense(be it male or female) would have to have military experiance. This is a must for many reasons, one being that he/she would know how to handel themselves during a time of war. My Secretary of Defense must be pround of their country and proundof the Lord!!
Next is the Secretary of State. The secretary is in charge of foreign policy and representing the United States to foreign governments. Since the Secretary of State deals with other goverments, I would appoint someone that had a way with words, someone that could bring news to other goverments.
Lastly is the Secretary of Treasury which maindates the spending budget and the funds of the government. For the Secretary of Treasury I would appoint someone that was very very good with a lot of money. Someone that would know how to spend our countries money wisly even with our economis problems.

    ReplyDelete
  52. If I was President I would have a great responsibility on my hands. I would have to look not only to the good of my family and the White House but to the good of the people and our nation. As president there is so many people working under you to help you out in all the issues and decisions you have to make. You appoint people to be in your cabinet who you believe can fullfill these positions the best. Some of these positions are Secretary of State, Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of War.
I find all of these to be very inportant in their own way. Such as without good advice you can not always make good decisions and without someone over seeing our finances we can not maintain our money and without someone over wars we would not be able to defend ourselves and aid any in wars. So it is hard for me to pinpoint which I think most important but since I have to I would chose Secretary of State so I could make the best decisions for the nation. Second would be Secretary of Treasury so we could have a good financial system and third would be Secretary of War so we can not be overtaken and so we are prepared. For Secretary of State I would chose someone with the ability to think clearly in tough decisions and be able to give me advice about the issues of the US. They would have to be trust worthy and dependable and would have to have a good christian outlook on the world. The Secretary of Treasury would need to be able to think towards the future and not only what is happening now. They need to be able to think is the cost of this going to be worth it or is it going to end up costing us. And thirdly Secretary of War would need to be experianced in the military and be able to think through their decisions at a quick rate in difficult situations. These are my three but like I said I find them all to be very inportant to the President and the US.

    ReplyDelete
  53. So really if I were President of the United States, Choosing the cabinet member would be a very tough decision, they would have to have the qualifications of that specific cabinet.

I would have to choose a Christian, a strong fellow believer also they would have to be Republican( Well, you have to have someone who will agree with you), i would have to have known them( I mean I wouldn't go out and randomly chose someone to be speaker of the house).

I think the most important cabinet is the is the secretary of defense. With this position I would have to choose someone who has prier experience in the military mainly the leadership positions, which would be able to handle themselves during times of war.

In my opinion the second most important cabinet would have to be the the department of Treasury. Today we are becoming more and more independent on someone who can manage government spending. It would have to be someone who can manage the government money wisely.

Now in my opinion the third most important I think is the Secretary of State. To deal with international affairs and to keep on a good note with our allies to make sure they stay our allies but also to try to gain some allies in the process.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well Mr. Akers this is a very interesting topic you have brought up. I still think that the top three with most responsibilities are the same basic three: secretary of state, secretary of defense and secretary of treasury. As President of the United States I would not want to mess up with these three so I would put a lot of thought into it considering their history in the government, military, and criminal record. These would definitely be main factors in my decision.
For secretary of defense I would look for someone with a brilliant military background. I would not want some fat white male sending men and women he considered expendable overseas for a war that he thought was important. If I was going to risk people’s lives I wouldn’t want someone that has just read all about war and never experienced it to be making the decision of life or death for soldiers. I understand that in the end it would be my decision but I would not want an influence like that.
For secretary of state I would want a very open minded and dependable person. I would need someone that I could trust, because if they are overseas speaking or supporting a cause I would not want them making America look bad. I wouldn’t want them to have to lie and get bad press either though.
To be secretary of treasury, in my opinion, the person would have to not be greedy or self relying they would need to be able to take advice from others and not depend on himself and make rash decisions on a whim.
Thank you Mr. Akers for this wonderful assignment and I apologize if I stole anyones ideas or opinions I rly haven’t looked over them yet. lol

  55. If i were presedent of the united states,The type of people i wuold have in my cabinet would first off have to be peoaple of good moral and christian values.next off each person would have to have years and years of prior experients in the according position that they would be in.also indaviduals that are calm cool collective uder pressure.

For my secratery of defence i would choose someone who can make quick and decisive in the heat of the moment.Next i would choose my secretary of state,i would have to choose someone that was really on top of foreghn affars and really good speech and speaking skills the type of person that could really draw youre attention and not be dull and boring.Next i would choose my secratary of trasury i would have to choose someone of financial genius, someone who could really keep up with the countrys financial state at all times, someone who would spend oure money wisely, and try to set up oure spending to where we can get out of debt.

  56. I liked your post, Ben. You made some good pointsssssss. I liked what you said about how they should be known as true Christians from their actions and public speeches. I strongly agree that they shouldn’t just be the type of people that would only check a box saying they were Christians. They definitely need to be open about Christ and active in a church that preaches nothing but the Bible. There is ONE gospel, ONE way, ONE truth, and ONE life. That’d be nice if some Cabinet members understood that.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Mady, yours was great. I like how you were straight forward and didn’t beat around the bush. You absolutely destroyed the bush. But I don’t feel sorry for the bush (the bush being abortion, homosexuality, non- Christian morals, etc.). I agree 100 % on the fact that we need someone who whole- heartedly lives for Christ. We don’t just need someone who claims to be a Christian and doesn’t even live it out. I also would appoint strong conservatives that are anti- abortion and homosexuality.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Choosing a cabinet for president Ryan Adams would be a pretty darn easy process. The Cabinet and advisory panel that are in office right now is pathetic. I believe that little or no effort was made to actually check the criminal record of people like Van Jones who have been in jail...

Anyway(!), having ranted i will now select my cabinet. The most important (i believe) office in the cabinet is the Secretary of State. This is because of their high ranking in the line of succession. The holder of this position would definitely be Glenn Beck. This man has DEFINITELY proven himself to be a worthy citizen. He is plugged in the United States government and picks up on the corruption of our current neo marx.... I mean president. His wits would help in the United States foreign contact.

Who's next? Well for importance sake we'll put the Secretary of Defense next. This person would be one who understands war and has physical experience in fighting one. He would not be a white collar representative. He would be John McCain. While i don't agree with ALL of his political views, i believe this man would know what to do to protect our country.

Treasury? well, money is probably way up there on the mind of Americans. I know it is mine. America is broke at the moment and is subject to being forced to repay if deemed necessary by big countries like China. Say what you want, but no contract can stop a country with 1,330,044,544 people. Who could dig us out of this rut? Ronald Reagan. Were the man still alive I would immediately choose him to handle the U.S. money. His trickle down theory was amazing. Why barack hussein obama doesnt use this system puzzles me to this day. My theory is that he actually WANTS to destroy the United States. But, thats just me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Posh, i think you nailed the idea of the renaissance man. Someone who is very well rounded and who would vouch as a president. I know that if I were president, i would want someone who could handle each office to come after me. I was a little surprised that we weren't asked to pick a vice president though.

    ReplyDelete
  60. And jaykub, I totally agree with the conservative side of your cabinet. It seems as though some people purposely try to hand out OUR power to OTHER countries and portray the United States as a weak country. Many wicked people are in office these days and I think it's our job as U.S. citizens to inform the other citizens of who is leading and what careless decisions they are making. I heard recently that Cass Sunstein wants to BAN EATING MEAT AND HUNTING!?!?!? dumb people running our country. This man is obama's right hand. we get too distracted be "Obama care" to look into to these "small" issues that will slowly bind us down in our "free country".

    ReplyDelete
  61. If I was Presdident of the United States I would giovern it with the Bible.Because this coun try has gotten away from yhat and in the Bible ( not sure where) it says that the unrighteous will fall and the righteous will succeed. So I would make sure that certain marriages would be allowed and that you could be taught Christian beliefs in scholl if you choose. Also I think that if you see convicts at the movies aklmost every weeek it's too much. So I think that it is wrong for us to pay for there well being aand for escapades like this.

I think that the most important depearments of the cabine are the dep of defense , treasury and education. THe first because we need our homeland protected and the rights of our citizens living overseas. The second because it governs our money and though it may not always do the best job we still need it. And lastly the Department of Education, i believe that this is important because this nation needs educated so that we can create better lives for ourselves and those to come after us.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Alright I would like to start by saying that I think there are many important cabinet departments like commerce, health and human services, and treasury, but the departments I consider most important are the Departments of State, War, and Education. I believe the way we interact and are perceived by other countries is very important. As we know countries are very dependent on trade with other countries; how countries see us effects not only how much money we make on exports but it can affect the price of imports. I believe the Departments of War and State are closely intertwined. The way countries view us changes how they see our conflicts with other countries (whether they want to help us in wars/conflicts) and the Department of State can keep out of Wars, but when all else fails we will need a strong military presence. Lastly, I chose the Department of Education because, to quote my wonderful history teacher, “Education and freedom go hand-in-hand…an uneducated people are soon to be an enslaved people.” Obviously how we educate our people effects every part of society, so, I consider this to be pretty important. Now there are a few universal qualities I would look for in picking Secretaries for these departments. I would, obviously, want experience in the area they would be heading. I also would like people who believe the same things as me politically, so that I could at least do things in office. I want people who have shown wisdom in the past with hard decisions, people who have been in difficult situations and have made hard decisions (even if they weren’t the most popular decisions), more than I want people that are popular. Lastly, and something many of you have said I would like to have Christians in these positions. I think it’s important to have men and women who will pray for wisdom and strength daily. There are many other qualifications that are covered in these more broad topics I have listed. (ex. Military experience for war department secretary is covered by experience in the area.)

    ReplyDelete
  63. if i was president the secretaries i would have would be the secretary of state. because i would want to know what would be best for the states. and what the best way to help them was. i would also need a secretary of defence. because i dont really konw anything about fightin a war. i woiuld need someone to tell me what to do in order to defend our country. also i would need a secretary od treasure. i need a adviser to tell me exactly how much i would need to spend the tax payers money and how much i should tax them. these ones i have mentioned here are the ones that i believe to be the most important because these are the things that we have to worrie about it.

  65. Josh, I like what you had to say. You had a lot of the same points that I had in my original post.

Ryan, very interesting post and way to put things. While it is blunt and aggressive, I couldn't agree more, but maybe that is because we hang out to much. =/

    ReplyDelete
  66. Jake (Anderson)...

You are intitled to your opinion, and you have the freedom to put it on here. I'm glad you did, because I really get tired of always agreeing with everyone. I like to argue, it's fun.=)
You made an excellent point in saying it's becoming harder to find solid Christians in America today. Now that is a very scary thought. But, whose fault is that? I mean God called US as Christians to live like Christ, but how many of us really do that?
However, you are getting into some real murky waters when you start putting people with views and ethics you do not agree with into offices. Yes, we want Christian leaders. Most definately. If you can't find one ANYWHERE in America then you might start appointing other people into office. Does this mean you have to appoint a pro-death(there is no such thing as pro-choice..you are either pro-life for unborn babies or pro-death), gay, evolutionist...well no. But really think about it, if you wanted to find a good solid Christian leader, you could.
Remember, the people you are putting into offices are going to have an effect on population of America, and they're most likely not going to just sit up there, do their job, and keep all their opinions to themselves. They're going to tell people what they think, and people are going to listen. That is why it is critical you have officers who will proclaim truth.

  67. I've gotta say Calben's emphasis on the department of enerygy was an excellent point. I wish I had touched on it myself. Te truth is i worry about the safety of my country much more than its energy efficiency. But in the long run energy efficiency is an excellent contribution.

  68. Ryan you blunt and true post really hits to the heart of the conservative power base.
Even going so far as to name names shows that your ideals are manifested in todays politcal field and are hopefully not too far away from the mainstage of running our wonderful country.

  69. Were I the President of the United States of America, and it was my responsibility to choose my cabinet members, it would obviously a massive decision to make. I feel that Christian leadership is very important. Especially considering that America was founded on Christian principles. Therefore, my appointments would definitely have to have Christian values and morals. They would also have to have experience in the area they were being appointed to. Something else they should have (which is becoming more obsolete in government) is common sense. That would be so awesome.

To decide the three most important cabinet secretaries is really difficult because all of them are vital to the function of our system of government. I’m not sure how sound my reasoning really is because I’m not really the President and I don’t know a lot about the way everything works in the White House, but just as a high school junior, this is my theory.
I think the Secretary of Treasury would be the most important. I realize that a lot of people think Defense would be first, but think about it. Without good management of our money and a good budget structure, where is the money to fund our military? I think the Secretary of Defense should come second because it’s very important to keep our guard up. As our wise former President Roosevelt once said, “Walk softly and carry a big stick.” I think that’s still a good idea. Third, I would pick the Secretary of State because we need someone to maintain good foreign relations. We need someone that we can send abroad to different countries to negotiate and speak for us.
Like I say, I don’t know as much the President would know, but just from what I do know, that’s what I say.

  70. Hmm... being President would be so stressful that I'm pretty sure I would hate it. The cabinet is basically your advisors. They supervise in particular things (like foreign affairs, war, education, tranportation, labor, etc.) which keeps the President from having to know everything about everything. Unfortunately, knowing everything about everything is exactly what the American people expect from the President.

In my oppinion, the most important Departments are the Departments of State, Health and Human Services, and Defense. I chose these for multiple reasons; one being that I know more about these than I do some of the others, and two being that they are very important. The Department of State oversees foreign affairs, and good relations with other nations in pivotal in this day and age. I chose Health and Human Services because the welfare of the people in our nation should be the most important thing. Often times, however, it's not. (I'm a large advocate for social services reform in our state of Kentucky and a better system for reporting child abuse than calling up the Department of Community Based Services.) Then the Department of Defence of course. Since 2001 war has been on peoples' minds and in the forefront of media almost constantly so that's why I chose this one.

When looking for secretaries for these Departments, I would want someone who really knows a lot about the area of expertise they are being placed in to (teachers for the Department of Education, generals in the Department of Defense, doctors in Health and Human Services, etc.), someone who can relate with the American people (not just someone who's popular, will got you more votes in the next election, and/or rich), and someone who has the same moral expectancies that I do (Christian) .

  71. I will now be joining in on the Jake and Madyson discussion because it is the most interesting one.
Mady, I completely understand your viewpoint and do agree, however here is something I'd like to add...

    JAnderson:
I agree with you. I would never vote for a pro-choice, evolutionist, homesexual, atheist in million years. However, I choose to look at it from this perspective: I personally don't think that someone who sees the mother making a decision for herself (pro-choice) would be a terrible leader. I probably wouldn't vote for them,...

but the thing I absolutely CANNOT STAND is when people really rude to our President; like when they criticize his every move, looking at the things that he's actually doing right and analyzing them to the point where they find something to say bad about him.

And when they talk about how bad America is going to be by the time he gets out of office; stop talking about how he is going to ruin our country because so far, he hasn't done anything worse than the others.

On the day that Obama was named the winner of the election, fair-and-square may I add(without the help of ACORN) I personally know about 3,000 people who made up there minds right then-and-there that they hated him and would not support him... That is not one bit right, not one bit a Christian thing to do.

    Thank you...
    It feels good to vent.
    P.S.
    I voted for McCain.

  72. Jarred i like that you brought that up. I DO NOT agree with President Obama on 99.9% of issues, nor did I vote for him, nor do I think he is the best choice for president..however You're right. People need to respect him. He's our leader, we really cant change that. You don't have to like him, but realize God created him and God loves him (again another difference in me and God), and respect him. People are like "Oh he's so awful (and yes im guilty of it) but we are all sinners.

With the pro-choice thing..if the mother is going to die, then...Idk, I mean surely there is a less painful/gruesome way of removing the baby. Maybe even keeping the baby alive. What I mean by there is no pro-choice is: I really dislike when people throw that around saying "We're not killing the baby, it's the mothers choice." It's her right" The term pro-choice (imo) is just a nicer way of saying I am for abortion. I believe mother's are entitled to their privacy, but again we are not talking about shooting a dog or drowning a cat. We're talking about the most horrific ways of murdering unborn babies.

  73. annna katherine, I agree with what you said about having cabinet members with a Christian worldview. We definatly need that, ecspecially now. I wonder what it would be like if we didn't have any Christian's in the cabinet?? Oh goodness I don't think that'd be to good. Not good at all. I can't even explain how bad we need good Christian cabinet members.

  74. vanessawyatt, I also agree with what you said about the people that you would appoint should have common sense. And,yes, that would be very awesome! Some of the things they're doing today makes me wonder if any of them have common sense. I know some (did I just say some?? ok most of them) of the ideas have come from the president but they have to go through the cabinet members, right?? Yeah it's making me wonder if they have any sense or not. I'm thinking they don't.

  75. Colby Upton,
I agree completely with the part of the people you would choose to be seaking the will of God while in office. Even though your response was fairly long it was quite intreging. You did a great job and I agrre on most of the topics that you spoke about. Like the Secretary of Education, I didnt really go into great detail with what i said but i did choose this as one of my three, and i could not have expressed my feelings on it much more then what you said about it. Us kids are the future of the nation and The Secretary of Education is one of the most important ones.

  76. Ryan Adams,
I wanted to say something about your comment towards Jaykub. I was just scrolling down the page and saw your bold letters- "BAN EATING MEAT AND HUNTING!?!?!?" If people dont already know, I am a vegetarian and i dont eat meat to stay alive. But I do agree on what you mean by this being a free nation and if people want to eat meat then thats there choice not the governments. And as we look at small little things like that our country WILL become blinded. Our government is acting like little middle skool gurls and having a field day with drama- no offense or enything. But the government shouldnt be worrying bout making laws about what food we eat but the people who cant even afford simple veggies.

  77. Madyson,
What you said to Jarred about Obama.
President Obama is our president and if we like it or not we haft to respect that. I lurned this last year and you might or might not know what im talking about, but i was in the wrong when i "stood up" for myself. I didnt see it as Disrespectfulness but now i look back on it and wishing that i didnt act like that. What im saying is that we can complain all we want to but that wont change him being our president fir the next 3 and a half years. Im not guna sit here and say im not guilty of it, I did cry the day he was elected. I was afrade of my future. But i learned how to put it in Gods hands and trust him with it. And trust him with Obama.

  78. Jon Byrd, I agree with you when you say that the original three departments are the most important ones.I only wish that I would have noticed that the question asked for the three departments that you think are the most important. I also agree with you when you say that the person would need to be someone who would benefit the nation.

  79. hannah I agree that the people in charge of the government (cabinet members in this case) should be Christians. And though Christians aren't perfect they do have God on their side to help them along. And I do think that it's a good idea to look to the past to see what we should do in the future. Because in the Bible it says that there is nothing new under the sun. So there is an instasnce out there that would help us govern our lives today.

    ReplyDelete
  80. biggin I agree with you" The people who serve in the cabinet must go in with no agenda, but to serve our nation for its best interest."
First, the department of defense is a very important part of our government today and always has been. And the Department of Health and Human Services is also important but sometimes I think that this department can be exploited. Because how many people out there are on full government support when they are perfectly healthy? But believe me when i say that this department is also needed for those honest hard working people that have became ill and connot work or those that have hit very hard times.

Lastly the Secretary of State is most definitely one of the highest stress and importance in our government system. But with this extreme amount of responsibility there needs to be a person of high moral standards. Because out of the cabinet this person is third in line for the presidency if something ever happened to the President or the V.President. And they need to be able to advise the above in ways that will take this nation back to its roots of Christianity.

  83. I liked what Biggin said about the leaders he picks for his cabinet would have to be consistent. Not go and say they are going to do this and then and do what is the most popular at the time or something.

And what Jakob said about what someone who is truly a Christian not someone who says their "Religious", to be politically correct

    ReplyDelete
  84. I also agree with what Pope said about he wanted a leader who would not fall apart under pressure, for example the secretary of Defence in panic if some country threatens us.

  85. Emily C.
I really like what you said about the extensive amount of experience an individual would have to possess to hold an office. I loved your example about Secretary of Defense. How ridiculous would it be to appoint someone to a position like that without a resume that included war experience?! That would be like appointing one student out of an entire to take notes for the whole class. Only problem is the fact that the person they chose to do that, has illegible handwriting. That won't benefit anybody. In fact, when test time arrived, we would all be in terrible situation.

    Colby,
I liked what you had to say about the Department of Education. I almost regret leaving that out of my own little essay. It really is so crucial that we emphasize the importance of a good education. It's absolutely vital to our future. Our current generation of high school students will soon be our government leaders. Do you want somebody who failed high school economics to be in charge of government financial affairs?!

  86. Wow, guys, you are really impressive! While I can't say that I agree personally with everything (as if that mattered) I love the way you are passionate about your beliefs and have taken some time to understand the issues facing our nation today.

  87. Charity, I liked what you said about they would have to be people who are not afreaid to share their opinion with you because what is the point of having people to talk with and give you advice if they are not going to tell you what they think. If all they do is agree with you then are they really helping you make the best decision. You need someone who will share their ideas even if it does not agree with yours. Sometimes things other people say will cause you to have a different perspective on the subject and your over all decision.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Anna, I do not agree with your statement that the person you would want should have all over experience not just experience specific to the area that they are working in. If a person has all over experience it usualy means that they are not as good with specific things. For example, if you had a secretary of war that was never in the army but had good people skills and was well liked they would probably do a not so good job. another example would be the department of agriculture. If you had a person who did not grow up around farming and agriculture they would not do as good a job as someone who had grown up around it and had a degree in it. So what I am trying to say is that in a lot of casses it is better to have a specific set of skills oposed to a general knowledge of a lot of things.

  89. time to comment ha. Ummm for most of you I have to agree with the fact that you mentioned you want expirience in the area your putting people and I agree with that 100%. Another thing many of you mentioned(Mady's stuck out to me most) is that you want a christian in office. I think this is completely right. I think christianity is so important to a person keeping there integrity in the many troublesome situations you get put in in authority, and Mady I love to see how passionate you are about it.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Colby, I like what you said about them having to be christians who seek God's advice in office because if they do not allow God to give them advice then they are takin their opinion over Gods. God knows what is best in ALL situations so why should we not listen to him for advice.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Biggin' I wanna say I liked how you pointed out consistency. I didn't read every comment but that stuck out to me too. Consistency is something so needed in our government, but consistency with a Christian heart. and a couple of you pointed out honesy/braveness/bluntness. I think we need people who don't fear not being poiltically correct.

  92. If I were president I would have several criteria for choosing my cabinet. First would be not only experience in their area, but success. Sure Enron’s CEO might be experienced, but his company ultimately wasn’t successful. How successful they were would determine if their experience would be helpful to their position. Next, they would have to be of good character. The two things in their character I would look for is integrity and good intentions, so there would be less chance of some sort of scandal and they would do what they honestly think is best for the country. Another important criterion would be some of their political beliefs. They would need to be a capitalist and an overall conservative. And although I am a republican and who I would appoint would most likely be a republican, there are probably many democrats out there who would meet my criteria and be right for the job and thus I would consider. And lastly, they would need to be a Christian. This is important because having a Christian or non-Christian world view would severely effect how you would help run a country.
Today the cabinet consists of the Vice President and 15 executive departments. I believe the three cabinet positions with the most important responsibilities are the secretary of state, secretary of the treasury, and secretary of defense. Secretary of state is important because they deal with foreign affairs and directly advise the president himself. The secretary of the treasury is important because they can either make or break the economy. The secretary of defense is important because our military is important.
