  1. Homework-April 23, 2010
In my opinion, a hero is someone that does the truly right thing. No matter if it is against their politics or not exactly the most popular choice, and maybe even frightening at times. The everyday citizens that became the American Revolutionaries did just that. I know the assignment was to choose one American hero, but without the men and women that fueled the rebellion against the “Mother Country,” there would be no such thing as America.
The odds these people were up against were crazy! Great Britain was the world superpower of the day, much like America is now (funny how that worked out, huh?). The redcoats had recently fought wars all over Europe and trampled everyone in their path. Their army was FIVE times larger than the minutemen group we had over here. Great Britain had virtually endless supplies constantly replenishing their soldiers’ stock. Our army consisted of the average colonist: blacksmiths, masons, farmers, etc. They had hardly any experience when it came to fighting.
Still, when it came time for them to defend their colonies and towns from the British, they stood up to protect their rights. They were the first American heroes.

  3. Homework 1, Fourth Quarter, Due March 19, 2010

    The Cuban Missile Crisis

    Was he a good leader?
Yes I do think that JFK was a good leader. As president he was liked by many and was considered a popular president. JFK also realized the responsibility he had and I don’t think he took his job lightly. He knew that the decisions he made could have drastic consequences so he thought things through. Of course not everything he did turned out how he had expected or how he had hoped but overall he was a good leader and president.

Did he make the correct choice given what he knew at the time?
Yes I think he made the correct choice especially with what he knew at the time. He saw that peoples’ lives had been in danger and been taken and nothing had really been accomplished. Also many families were wanting their husband, dads, sons, brothers, grandpas and so on to come back from war. America had already been through so much with the Vietnam War that many people were ready to end war not get started in another one and the president was ready to be out of war as well. No one wanted more die, so yes I do think that from what JFK knew he made the right choice.

    Should he have acted differently?
No I do not think that he should have acted differently. I think that he did what he should have and saved many lives in doing so.

Emily you had a good essay and I really enjoyed reading it. I like how you pointed out the fact that he was patient and took his time in making the decision that he ultimately made. I think this is a great quality in him and is one thing that helped him in being a good leader. I mean I think that every leader should be willing to take the time to think things out in order to make the decision that is best for our country especially as president when the choices you make affect us as a nation.

Blake you did a good job on your essay and I liked what you had to say about thinking that JFK made the right decision in the Cuban missile crisis. Most everyone knows that his decision made it so that millions of people who would have died did not. However, I think that it is interesting to know that this led to the signing of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty that he and Khrushchev signed.

  6. Homework 2, 4th quarter (comments)

Camden nice essay, it had some neat facts in it and was very informative. I enjoyed reading about Ronald Reagan and how he had been in so many movies and I did not know that he hosted a television series known as “Death Valley Days”. I found all this to be very interesting, good job.

Caleb while reading your essay something came to my mind. You talked about how Robert Kennedy received an honorable discharge from the navy and how he ended up going to law school where he met his future wife. This made me think of the saying that all things happen for a reason. He was honorably discharged from the army but this helped him to find his future wife. You never know why the things that happen do but who knows something good could come of it. So yea just a thought I guess but anyways good essay.

  7. 1) What part (if any) of the story surprised you?
Well I was not really surprised by the story as much as I was just wondering what must have been going through their minds. Yea we know they were wanting to get their point across but how could you decide that that was the way you were going to get people to give notice to your ideas and feelings. It just kinda makes me wonder but there are some extreme people out there.
    2) What fueled the anger of this group, and how should people act to bring about change they believe in?
Their anger was fueled by their disagreement in how things were being done and run. The believed things that needed to be accomplished were not being accomplished and that they definitely were not going about the right way to solve these issues. I believe the way to act in order to bring change to what you believe in you for one need to know everything you disagree with and why and you should talk about it with someone so you have someone elses input on your thoughts and then you should bring it up to more and more people. I’m not sure where to go from here but I do think that in order to be able to change something you should know what it is about something that needs to be changed and why.
    3) How were these violent enemies of the status quo different from George Washington and our founding fathers?
I think the difference would be their approach. The violent enemies forced what they believed and caused harm and danger while George Washington and the founding fathers did not purposefully cause harm or danger.

Sam I liked your essay and especially liked the third point that you made about the difference between George Washington and our founding fathers, and the WUO Anarchists. I agree that they really are opposites in the way that they believe and act. For one like you said the founding fathers believed in One Nation Under God while the anarchists believed in no god. I mean that is a big one right there because based on that is many other things. That determines how you believe, think, treat others, and just the value of human life.

Josh I also enjoyed reading your essay and about the meaning behind what they named themselves. I actually kinda makes since as to why they would name themselves that. I agree that that was probably there reasoning for the name and just found it very interesting.

Ben, you had a good essay. I agree with you in what you said about the president deserving privacy and how there is that fine line though. I mean yes I think that as presidents they should have some privacy yet think about it. They are running our country and making decisions that impact as so we also need to know about his plans and I do think that he should have people that he talks with about things. Not just one person but a group that way not only will he have accountability but he will also have other peoples advice be able to make decisions based on everything known.

Cody nice essay, I thought you had some good points that you made. I definitely agree that it is sad that the law did now figure things out before the press and media did. It is the laws job yet someone else had to do their job for them.

  10. Homework 4 comment (my other one I did late as well but I did it before I knew to put it here so its in the Homework 4 section as well as my homework 4 essay) thanks

Charity good essay and I enjoyed reading it. It was somewhat different than the others I read and I love how you pointed out different people. It was hard for me to choose just one because so many people played were heros and had such impacts on the united states.

  11. Homework 4 - Due April 23rd

A true hero, eh? Well, I think that I will have to go with an easy answer, because sometimes they are also extremely true. Rosa Parks would be a very good choice, in my opinion, for a true hero from American history. She was born into society with what were two pretty decent limitations for changing the world. Her race black; her gender female.
Women are stubborn! Let me tell you. This forty two year old black woman, who from the booking photo I have seen could not have weighed more than 150 pounds, refused to give up her seat to a white passenger. What’s more, she was actually in the so called “colored section” and not trying to cause trouble by any means. She was where she was told to be and then asked to move. Though three black men moved compliantly, she remained stationary. She told the men she felt she shouldn’t have to move. When they threatened to call the police, she said, “You may do that.”
In a time when racially inspired violence was not only common, but the norm in some areas, this was a dangerous move. The white men easily could have become violent toward her, and in my opinion, I am unsure if anyone would have helped her. It’s sad, but times were different. Today, we are closer to where we should be as a nation and as a people, in many ways. There is still work to be done. Morality is not where it should be, and some “rights” are being claimed that no man should be given the power to have, but nonetheless, progress was made in one area and this middle aged, polite but unyielding black woman helped to create it.

    Homework 4 - Comments - Due April 25

    Hannah,
That was really awesome choosing Native Americans as American heroes. That is very unique and a cool choice. Having strong native American heritage, this really did hit home with me. Their wisdom was indeed broad and their strength to fight for what they knew was very honorable. Would we do any less? I think not. The poor Native Americans tried often to be peaceful with settlers, teaching them ways of the land, crops, etc. And we betrayed them time and time again. We were the outsiders, taking what we wanted. But those were generations ago. I hope now we, really a different people group than the early settlers we identify with, can look back and learn a lesson. Good report.

    Anna,
I have to say, first of all, I’m a sucker for quotations. Hah. Very nice beginning and ending to your essay. The choice of Harriet Beecher Stowe is a marvelous one. Authors really help to paint the landscape of a culture, capture a moment in time, and spread it to both current citizens and generations to come. With “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, Stowe changed the world she lived in, and helped to change the world to come. It’s really quite amazing the power authors can have. (Makes you scared considering some of the stuff people are reading these days). Stowe opened peoples minds, which helped them open their eyes, Excellent choice.

  14. Homework 3.......

    1) What part (if any) of the story surprised you? Well it didn't really surprise me very much at all. From what we saw at Kent State and Jackson State, people will almost do anything to get a point across even if it leads to the death of other people. I am like Jon on this one though. I have honestly never heard of the Weather Underground Organization

    2) What fueled the anger of this group, and how should people act to bring about change they believe in? The group was mostly angry over the situation with the war in Vietnam. The WUO wanted it to be stopped, as did many others, but of course as we know the government has other plans including an even larger assault on the North Vietnamese. They also were upset with the Civil Rights Movement and they protested to show their beliefs.

    3) How were these violent enemies of the status quo different from George Washington and our founding fathers? I believe that this group is different than our founding fathers for obvious reasons. They tried to overthrow the government, a system setup by those very founders. Also, they became violent to get what they wanted, George Washington and others setup our system for a reason and by trying to overthrow that system, they are set apart from our founding fathers.

  16. Homework 4....

The person in history that I believe was a true American hero is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Even though he is an obvious choice Martin Luther King was a very important part and big influence in American History, not only is he a hero to the African American race but to all Americans period. The movements he made for the African American race are just awe-inspiring. It shows people that if you just stand up for what you believe in you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. What makes his story so fascinating is that he accomplished all he did during a hard, dark time towards his very race. There was violence going on all over the place, mainly in the school systems but also in other places. And other persecutions, some for doing things as simple as sitting in the wrong seat on the bus like Rosa Parks. Whoever would think that you could be arrested for sitting in the wrong seat? It is unheard of now-a-days and a lot of that is also paid dues towards Mr. King himself. His I have a dream speech not only changed history, but it placed hope inside of every single African American that things could and would change if they just stuck to it. And I believe anyone who can be an inspiration to an entire race, and get things done and start movements that led to the country we are today as a whole, is a true American hero.
