This week’s assignment offers you a choice of topics to research. We are going to use the website livius.org, which is similar to Wikipedia.org in that it is a free resource with many contributors, but different in that the contributors are all college history professors whose work is thoroughly checked for accuracy and quality.
The first option is to research and report on the war between Jews and Romans at the time of the fall of Jerusalem and other Jewish strongholds. Read the article found at the link http://www.livius.org/ja-jn/jewish_wars/jwar05.html and write an essay describing your findings. State and defend your opinion about whether the Jews should have rebelled against the Roman Empire, given what you know of the subject.
The second option is to further research the Babylonian Empire. While we have discussed the Old Babylonian Empire, the Assyrian Empire, and the New (Neo) Babylonian Empire, there are several other empires that arose in the area known as Mesopotamia that we did not discuss in class lecture. Follow the link http://www.livius.org/ba-bd/babylon/babylonian_empire.html and read the article there then report your findings on one of the empires that we did not discuss in class. Offer and defend your opinion as to why this region so often saw powerful empires arise only to fall quickly after a few generations.
The third option is to research the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as discussed in the article found at http://www.livius.org/se-sg/7wonders/seven_wonders.html . Which was most impressive? Which was, in your estimation, the least? Defend your opinions by offering critical analysis of both.
As always, be sure to cite your sources. In citing an internet source, be sure to mention the author, the title and URL of the page, and -this is important- the date on which you saw the page. After all, webpages are bound to change. Also, check the website www.akers-scs.blogspot.com for important information regarding lesson plans. Thanks and keep up the good work!
For my essay, I chose to write about the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. The Seven Wonders could, in fact, actually be called the 14 Wonders of the Ancient World, if you counted the 7 other places that were added at the bottom of the list (such as the Colosseum, Noah's Ark, and the Temple of Solomon.)
ReplyDeleteThe 7 wonders of the Ancient World (the orginial list, subtracting the last 7 that I mentioned above) consist of walls, statues, graves, and even a garden. The list of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World is as follows:
1) The Walls of Babylon
2) Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia
3) The hanging gardens of Babylon
4) The Colossus of Rhodes
5) The pyramids of Egypt
6) The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
7) The temple of Artemis of Ephesus
When I read over this list only a few stuck out to me as ever even hearing of before: The statue of Zeus (from the movie Hercules, of course), the pyramis of Egypt, the Temple of Artemis of Ephesus (from the Bible story in the book of Acts, I believe), and the Hanging Gardens.
Of the 7 Wonders, I believe that the Pyramids are by far the most impressive. No one is quite sure on how the ancient Egyptions were able to build them without the use of modern technlogy. And for these magnificent structures to be used as tombs, with secret rooms, booby traps, and treasures hidden deep inside, that just blows my mind. The Pyramids are amazing structures also in the fact that they have survived thousands of years and are still intact, where as many of hte other wonders of the Ancient World are mostly gone or completly gone.
The least impressive of the 7 Wonders, to me, is the Walls of Babylon. Although the description and picture that the site had was impressive, the article said that what was described was most likely not even the Walls of Babylon, but was, more then likely, Thebes in Egypt. Because they aren't even sure that the description is of the Walls of Babylon, I am not that impressed with it.
Something that stuck out to me in this article is that instead of writing "B.C." for giving years before Christ's birth, they put "B.C.E." for Before Common Era. I personally would rather write "B.C." rather then "B.C.E." but I guess they decided to take a safe route and not try and insult anyone. Despite the added "E", the years are still the same and the "E" is simple to ignore and be read as "Before Christ" instead of "Before Common Era"

For my essay I have chosen to research the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The first, original list contained seven Greek buildings, but in the early third century, non Greek monuments were include as well. It expressed the novel idea that barbarians could also produce fine works of art, an idea that can be found in the books by several scholars and philosophers of the first generations after Alexander the Great. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are The walls of Babylon, Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the colossus of Rhodes, the pyramids of Egypt, the mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the temple of Artemis in Ephesus. I think, that the pyramids of Egypt are the most impressive. They are thousands of years old and are still standing, partially intacted. The pyramids took generations upon generations of thousands and thousands of people to build. They built different types of monuments too, such as the first step pyramid, the true triangle pyramid, and sphinxes. The pyramids are the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world that survives more or less intact. To me, the least impressive is the hanging gardens. They're cool and all but they're just plants and stuff.
ReplyDeleteC*S...3,
ReplyDeleteI agree completly with what you wrote about the Pyramids. It doesn't seem possible that sand structures built thousands and thousands of years ago could still be standing today. Although they are missing the glossy reflecting stuff that we learned about in class.
I disagree with what you put about the Hanging Gardens. Sure they might just be plants, but I looked at Google Images at the Hanging Gardens and some of those pictures were just beautiful... or would be if they were real life pictures instead of drawings. Some pictures even had waterfalls and stuff like that in them!! Its hard to believe, after looking at those pictures, that it was a garden!! Good job on your essay. :)
I chose to write my essay on the 7 Wonders of the Anchient World. The original list of the 7 Wonders ,which has been lost, included magnificant Greek builings but later on other builings were added onto the list. Ancient Greek historians had a difficult time confirming what monuments were included in the 7 most impressive. But eventually a list was decided upon. The list includes: The walls of Babylon, Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia,
ReplyDeleteThe hanging gardens of Babylon, The colossus of Rhodes, The pyramids of Egypt, The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and The temple of Artemis in Ephesus. After researching all of these impressive structures mentioned in the list I decided that the most impressive to me was the Hanging Gardens and The pyramids of Egypt. I chose the hanging Gardens simply because it was so beautiful. After reasearching the Hanging Gardens even more I found out that King Nebuchadnezzar built this for his wife. His wife was from Iran and she wished to be back in the mountains that she was accustomed to. Nebuchadnezzar ordered that the Hanging Gardens be built to resemble Zagros mountain range for his wife. I also chose the Pyramids of Egypt. These mountain-like tombs are completly impressive because of their shape and the process they were built in. The Pyramids are the only monument of the 7 Wonders still existing today. The least impressive to me was the Walls of Babylon. I just didnt find it intresting or nearly as impressive as the others.
Emma.Delaine,
ReplyDeleteGood job!!! I agree with all that you put. Your essay was very informative. I didn't know that Nebuchadnezzer built the Hanging Gardens for his wife... or that she was from Iran... or that there were mountains in Iran!!! Good job!!! :)
I will be doing as Private Elijah, C*S...3, and Emma.Delaine have all three done and write about
ReplyDeletethe 7 wonders of the ancient world.. I guess when i first saw the options on what to write on (war between Jews and Romans, Babylonian Empire, or The 7 Wonders of the Ancient world) the 7 wonders of the ancient world stuck out to me. I think, it’s because I’ve heard that title a million times in my life time, and now i get to research it and find out truly what those “7 Wonders” are.
In the original list of the Seven Wonders (which is now lost) were all Greek building, but non-Greek monuments were added to this list in the early third century. The list we have today --although it does actually mention more than seven-- consists of 1) The Walls of Babylon, 2) Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia, 3) The hanging gardens of Babylon, 4) The Colossus of Rhodes, 5) The pyramids of Egypt, 6) The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and 7) The temple of Artemis of Ephesus.
If i had to choose one to visit it would most definitely be the pyramids of Egypt. They are so
different, and I’ve heard so many different opinions abut who these amazing things were made. If i could choose another out of these seven wonder, i would choose the hanging gardens. But out of all these my least favorite to read about would probably be the walls of Babylon.

ReplyDeleteI really liked you essay, and i (obviously) also think the pyramids are most impressive. I just can't seem to wrap my brain around how the ANCEIENT Egypian people created those magificient structures.... Those Egypians had to be super duper smart i guess. And by the way, i also noticed the "B.C.E." Rather than "B.C." as well. Again good job. :P

Emma. Delaine,
ReplyDeleteGood job on your essay as well, i agree that the hanging garden of babylon is beautiful (i looked it up on google images.) I didn't know as well that King Nebuchadnezzar built it for his wife (which i went back to the website later and found it.) I (as i said in my essay) also agree that the Walls of Babylon was my least favorite to research. All in all, good job. ;)

ReplyDeleteSalome Alexandria was the last woman ruler of Judea. She inherited Judea from her husband Aristobulus I. During this time in Jewish history there was much fighting between this family. They were not descendants of the House of David, so the predecessors used the title of "nasi"/"president".
ReplyDeleteWhen Salome Alexandria died her two sons started a bloody civil war. One bother Hyreanus
sided with the Pharisees, Aristobulus the other brother sided with the Sadducees.
During this time both political religious sects had struggled with power at different times. No one could get along. Everybody was greedy!
A Roman politician, Pompey the Great had been ordered by the Senate to take care of unrest. To an ambitious man like Pompey this offered all kinds of opportunities. After defeating pirates in the eastern Mediterranean he turned to other fields.
During the festival of Passover in 63, Aristobulus and the Sadduces were attacked by Hyrcanus the Pharisees and an Arbian sheik Aretas of Petra. Aristobulus sent for help and made an oofer to Pompey which he couldn't refuse. When he arrived Aristobulus gave him an additional gift that he forwarded to the temple of Jupiter in Rome.
In the middle of this there was much more fighting in which Pompey turned on Aristobulus in favor of his brother. In the middle of this Pompey attacked Jerusalem and the temple was entered by heathen which was a profane act. After this time Judea and Galilee were one of Rome's client kingdom's in the east. I honestly think had the Jewish nation been able to get along among themselves and settle their own quarrels they would not be weak enough to be conquered. Frankly they brought it upon themselves.

to Private Elijah, I really liked your essay. like me you also did your report on the 7 wonders of the ancient world. I totally agree with you about the pyramids being the most impressive of the 7 wonders, it's the biggest, took the longest to build, and was probably pretty dang awesome back in the day. However, I totally DISAGREE with you about the GREAT walls of Babylon being the least impressive of them It was 50 meters thick! 100 meters high!! 90 kilometers long!!! and it even had a trench around it.. I personally think that's pretty impressive. But I liked everything else in your report. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteto Emma.Delaine i liked your essay, you did the same subject as me. I agree with you that the pyramids were the greatest of the monuments that were built, but I disagree that the hanging gardens were also one of the greatest, like i said in my essay, there just plants and weeds that took a couple years to grow. However the great walls were huge and surrounded the "garden", I'm more impressed with the great wall, ( it's kind of like the great wall of china compared to a flower shop) it's much more impressive to me. but great job by the way. i really liked it.
ReplyDeleteI picked option three the Seven Wounders of the Ancient World. The Seven Wounders of the World are The walls of Babylon,Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia,The hanging gardens of Babylon,The colossus of Rhodes,The pyramids of Egypt,The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus,The temple of Artemis in Ephesus. I personally thing that The hanging gardens of Babylon are the most impressive to me. King Nebuchadnezzar built this park for his wife, a princess from Media. By creating The hanging gardens of Babylon he hoped that she would forget about her homeland. The one that was least impressive to me would have to be the Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia. The Athenian sculptor Phidias already had a great reputation when in 437 BCE he and his colleagues Colotes and Panaenus settled in Olypia to make the statue of the supreame god of the Greeks, Zeus, in whose honor the Olympic Games were held. The statue is now lost, but is shown on coins and gems. There is just not a whole lot about Phidias' statue of zeus in Olympia. The reason why The hanging gardends of Babylon was the best to me is because it is beautiful and very very rare its definatly not somthing you see every day. And the reason why the Phidias' statue of zeus in Olympia was the least impressive to me is beacause its just a statue nothing speacial we see them all the time and som people live near lots of them they are very common.
ReplyDeletethis essay has struck me as one that is slightly challenging. not because the options are extremely hard or anything but more that all three of the topics are very tempting to touch on. after long periods of consideration i have decided to tackle the 7 wonders of the ancient world, which are as follows:
ReplyDelete1.The walls of Babylon
2.Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia
3.The hanging gardens of Babylon
4.The colossus of Rhodes
5.The pyramids of Egypt
6.The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
7.The temple of Artemis in Ephesus
now after reading over the articles provided i have realized that a few of these wonders have been replaced over time such as the first one (the walls of babylon) which was stated to have been replaced by the Light house of Alexandria. also while reading over the list it stood out to me that only a couple of these sounded familiar in any way im not even quite sure where i have heard them before they just sound familiar. but through all of this there is one of the 7 wonders that sticks out to me the most... it would have to be #3 (the hanging gardens of babylon) its magnificent beauty is outstanding. but although its beauty is undeniable the fact that Berossus did this for his wife makes this wonder all the more charming, it takes a very caring person to think of something this heart felt for the one he loves.
now on the other hand the wonder that disappointed me in some ways would have to have been #4 (the colossus of rhodes)... when i first read the list this particular wonder stuck out to me simply because of its name it was just one of those names that catches ones eye. but after reading more into the object my interest simply died for some reason the statue of a man aimlessly standing there just doesnt ignite my intersest.
all in all i believe that these 7 wonders of the ancient world definitely fulfill a large part of our world today whether it is physically visible or not.

ReplyDeleteC*S...3,
ReplyDeleteEver heard the phrase "The bigger they are the harder they fall"? Well, how about The bigger the wall, the harder and faster it falls? Although I respect your opinion of the Walls of Babylon, I must give my point of view. The Walls (which, as I wrote in my essay, probably weren't even the Walls of Babylon, but the city of Thebes in Egypt.) were built for protection. The Hanging Gardens was for beauty. Which would you rather look at day after day? A big wall, or a beautiful, ever-changing garden. :)
c*s...3
ReplyDeleteyou humored me in your essay where you said that the babylon hanging gardens were just roots and weeds. let me remind you that the hanging gardens of babylon were origianally made by a man by the name of berossus, his wife was a princess and in a slight bribe he did this to keep her with him. so with that in mind think about this for a moment... if a man is trying to impress his wife and please her why would he do such a horrible job. i can assure you that roots and weeds would do nothing for me and if anything it would make me miss my home even more.so i sure he put just about everything he had into making this garden beautiful for her.
dearest c*s...3
ReplyDeleteforgot to add that all in all i really enjoyed reading your essay :)
for my essay i chose to wrute about the seven wonders of the world these wonders consist of 1.the walls of babylon 2.phidas'statue of zeus in olympia 3.the hanging gardens of babylon 4.the colossus of rhodes 5.the pyramids of egypt 6.the mausoleam of halicarnassus 7.the temple of atemis in ephesus
ReplyDeletesome of these i have heard of before others i have not.such as,the the colossus of rhodes the mausoleam of halicarnassus and the phidas'statue of zeus.i would have to say the pyramids of egypt are the most impressive out of all the wonders.its pretty cool they built secret rooms and put booby traps and hidden treasure in these huge pyramids.it just blows my mind how they built these pyramids not usin any modern tecknology to build with.the least impressive in my estimation is the temple of artemis at ephesus.although it may have been ompressive at one time its not much to look at today.out of 127 columns only one is still standing today.something that stuck out to me is how the used bce(before common era)instead of bc.

ReplyDeleteThe Seven Wonders of the Ancient World consist of The Walls of Babylon, Phidias' Statue of Zues and Olympia, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, The Colossus of Rhodes, The Pyramids of Egypt, Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, And the Temple of Artemis of Ephesus. The Ancient Greeks loved to make lists of their glorious structures. Although today we think of only seven wonders of the Ancient world, there were actually many lists by different Greek writers. The two most well known lists were written out by Antipater of Sidon and Philon of Byzantium. Later the list changed, the Walls of Babylon was replaces by The Lighthouse of Alexandria.
ReplyDeleteThe Wall of Babylon was said to have hundreds of gates, according to Homers description. Come to find out there were only eight gates in all, including the splendid Istar Gate (which was a very beautiful gate). In my opinion the Wall of Babylon was a massive, amazing wall with beautiful features. On the top of the wall were chambers with enough space in between them for a four-horse chariot. Thats pretty impressive to me but yet, not the most impressive.
Another of the ancient 7 wonders are the Pyramids of Egypt. I would have to say the pyramids are probably the most impressive to me. These pyramids were primarily made for tombs and originated to look like artificial mountains. The pyramids are the only one of the seven wonders that survives more or less intact.
Lastly im going to mention the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. This ancient world wonder obviously is amazing as well as all the other seven wonders but im going to say it was the least impressive to me. Yes, it was a huge monument made out of bricks with white proconnessian marble and was at least 41 meters high. It was also sculpted by the greatest sculptors of Greece. I still couldn't say it is near as impressive as all the other ancient wonders. It was destroyed by the Rhodian knights in 1522.
To conclude, these seven wonders were all marvelous in there architecture. The size of all of these were very massive. I think it is amazing how people back in those days built such beautiful and complex buildings, statues, gardens and temples.

ReplyDeleteEmily Lynn,
ReplyDeleteWell I definitly agree with you and many others that the Pyramids of Egypt are the most impressive. Your sentence that stuck out the most to me was the fact when you mentioned the B.C. and the B.C.E. I also prefer to say B.C.!!
I read this after I wrote mine and before I didnt know that the picture of the Wall of Babylon was probably the Themes in Egypt. This kind of disappointed me. So now that I know that, Im going to have to say I also agree with you on the Wall of Egypt and say
that its not the most impressive. Good job Emily :)

ReplyDeleteI choose to wrote on the seven Wonders of the Ancient World:
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, the walls of Babylon.
The second was, Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia.
The third was, The hanging gardens of Babylon.
Forth, The colossus of Rhodes,
Fifth, the Pyramids of Egypt,
Then came The mausoleun of Halicarnassus,
And at last, the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus.
Those seven wonders were magnificent. They have been built with out technologie.
Those kind of things could not be built today with the small amount of tools they had.
I' m going to write a little bit about two Wonders that I specially. I will start with the Walls of Babylon.
Babylon lies in a great plain. So each face of the wall measures 22 and a half kilometres .The shape of the whole being square, thus the circumference is 90 km., such is the city of Babylon. First, there runs ronds it a deep and broad trench, full of water. Then a wall, fifty meters in thickness and hundred meters in height. At the top of the wall along the edges they built chambersof one story facing another. In the circuit of the wall there are set a hundred gates made of bronze!! As you can see this wall was magnificent!
But the one I think is the most impressive is the state of Zeus made by Phidias:This statue was made by Phidias, to honor the Olympic Games. This statue was 12meters high. In one hand he carried a statue of Nike (who means victory in Greek.) , in the other a scepter. Surrounding his main body, were all kinds of other figures:lions, sphinxes.. The statue was made of gold and ivory and was carefully repared when necessary. The statue is now lost but I think it must have been a grandiose statue. I don' t know how they made it but it must have been a lot of work.
The five others must have been also magnificent.
The handing Gardens of Babylon, must have needed a lot of Botany work.
The Colossus of Rhodes is a beatiful and enormes statue.
The pyramids of Egypt, it' s almost inpossible to built some thing like this!! It' s a lot of work and I' m happy that they are still here today.
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. The king must have been honored to have this constrution that surpass the others.
And to finish, the Temple of Artemis of Ephesus. I think most of the Greek' s constructions are beatiful like must have been this one. They were realy good architects.
I can not choose one between those 7 that was less impressive. All of them are differents and it' s impossible to choose one.
I' ve use the site: http://www.livius.org/se-sg/7wonders/seven_wonders.html I' d just like to say that they are non-biblical errors in those articles.
Woops... sorry Emily Lynn... My response was actually meant for Private Elijah!!! Sry
ReplyDeleteWell, it seems like everyone has made theirs essay about the seven wonders of the ancient world. So, I think I'm going to branch off a little and do my essay on the Jewish war against the Romans.
ReplyDeleteThe fighting between the Jewish and the Romans was not one single battle or war. There were multiple militay engagemants between the Roams and the Jews.
The Romans captured the Jews a while before they started to rebel against their rule. The Romans had been pretty nice in letting them stay in Jerusalem and keep their culture and religion and practices. The Romans stayed out of their business for the most part. Pretty much all they were required to do is say something to the extent of - Ceasar is god - . Personally I would not have wanted to say it or have anything to do with the Empire and its government that had captured my Empire.
The Jews struggled to regain their freedom for many years and they revolted unsuccessfully several times. After a time the Romans got sick of their rebelliousness and fought back. They fought for four years until Roman general Justin something destroyed Jerusalem. They destruction of Jerusalem ended the war but not the violence.
The Romans pride had been severely injured after the revolt of the Jews and another group. Theu also lost respenct and prestige and they needed a way to regain the pride, respect, and prestige so they started picking on the little guys around them.
The Sicarians of Manasa were their target. Although not a threat the Romans needed an impressive victory to get them back where they thought they should be so they attacked the Sicarians because it was an easy victory. Most of them committed suicide before the Romans even got to them. Not all of them were said to be Jews but many were.
It is hard to say whether the Jews should have rebelled against Roman rule. I can see two sides of it. The Romans were very tolerant and nice to them. As I had mentioned earlier the Romans let the Jews do pretty much whatever they wanted. They were alowed to keep their religion and culture and ideas as long as it didn't impose on the roman empire and wasn't a threat. But on the Jews side of things they were taken captive and forced to live under Roman rule. The Romans should have just left them alone. If I were a Jew in that position I would be mad about that too and would be rebelious. I wouldn't want to bow down before Ceasar and say ceasar is god. Not right! I would have to say if it were me I would have rebelled too. Whether it was right or not I don't know. I would have but they also couldn't have seriously thought that they would win. The Roman Empire was vast and they had great military strength so it wasn't the brightest idea.

C*S...3 , I agree and disagree with you. I guess this is only a matter of personal opinion but I disagree with you about the hanging gardens of Babylon being the least impressive. The walls weren't the only impressive thing about the Hanging Gardens. I'm sure it was absolutely beautiful at one point. It wan't just weeds and grass that took a few years to grow. I know it had to take more than that to plant it and get everything to grow well and of course you had to take care of it continuously. And you would have to have some sort of irrigation system. And I know they didn't do all that work in building all those great walls just to plant some weeds and grass.
ReplyDeleteWhere I do agree with you though is the pyramids being one of the greatest or the greatest of the ancient wonders. It amazes me how they built them and and the work force it had to have required. And of course they used to have the polished marble or whatever on the outside that reflected an increadible amount of light.
Biggin,!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your essay! Lol I think so far you and I have been the only ones to do something OTHER than The seven ancient wonders. You did a good job on your essay it seems like you did a good amount of research. I learned quite a bit from it. And I think your right the Jews in a way were their own trouble. If they had been getting a long better they would have been stonger and probably been able to hold their own.
The seven wonders of the ancient world intrigued many people for centuries. Antipater of Sidon lived in the first half of the second century and created one of the first known lists of the seven wonders. You can find the list in the Anthologia Palatina, a collection of poetry.
ReplyDeleteHis list looked as follows:
1. The walls of Babylon
2. Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia
3. The hanging gardens of Babylon
4. The colossus of Rhodes
5. The pyramids of Egypt
6. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
7. The temple of Artemis in Ephesus
My favorite from the list would be the first, “The Walls of Babylon”. This construction can nowadays be found in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany. When I visited it in spring this year, I was impressed by the enormous but beautiful architecture. There are many real artifacts from the original walls but most are replicas. The Walls formed a processional street and were decorated with lions and flowers. You entered the street through the Ishtar Gate, which was the eighth gate to the inner city of Babylon. It was built in 575 BC by King Nebuchadnezzar II. It is 47 feet high and 100 feet wide. The ruins were excavated from 1902-1914 and it was during that time that the gate was discovered. I am amazed that the artifacts still existed after so many years and especially that they were in such good condition, even the colors remained on the bricks.
My least favorite of the seven wonders would be the Colossus of Rhodes. I think it is simple in comparison to the other immense buildings and constructions. It is only a single statue whereas the others were big, complex structures.

Seven Wonders of the Ancient world
ReplyDeleteThe Greeks really loved making lists. After the conquest of Alexander the Great, those lists started to became very popular, when many Greeks settled overseas. The list of the seven wonders of the world belongs to the category of those texts. Splending buildings, worthy of emulation. The original list, which is lost, contained seven Greek buildings. But in the third centurys, there were also non-greek monuments included. It expressed that the babarians could also produce nice works of art.
1. The walls of Babylon
Babylon lies in the Great Plain. It had a magnificience greater than all other cities. First there was a deep and broad trench, which is filled with water, all around. Then a fifty meter thick and hundred meter hight wall. The city had eight gates, including the splendid Istar Gate.
2. Phidias Statue of Zeus
Zeus was the reason why the olympic games were held. The original statue, which was built in 437 BCE, is now lost, but it is shown on coins and gems. The God was shown as a figure of about twelve meter hight. It was made of gold and ivory.
3. The hanging gardens of Babylon
Alexander Polyhistor quoting Berossus, who tells us that king Nebuchadnezzar (ruled 605-562), built this park for his wife, which was a princess from Media. He created the park, because he hoped that she would forget her homeland. No scholar has been able to find traces of the hanging gardens.
I really love this wonder. It is something special, and I like the way how they built it. Or I would better say, why they built it. It is something that was special for two people, for the king and his wife. The hanging gardens, he built were so impressive just to let her forget about her home, which was far away. And so, this is my favourite and I really enjoyed reading about it!
4. The Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus was created to commemorate the city of Rhodes by king Demetrius Poliorcetes (ruled 294-288). In 305-304 he had to attemped to conquer this important port, but the siege had been unsucessfull, and the Rhodians ordered to built a statue of Helios, which was the sun god.
The building was nearly thirty meter high, but it was destroyed by an earthquake.
During the reigns of claudius and Nero, an artist made a copy and he also bulit later a similar statur in Rome.
For me this is the least impressive world wonder. Well, it is still impressiv, but for me the others are a bit more interessting. Like the hanging gardens of babylon, which were built because of love to another person. It was a building with very much importance for two people. And this is something that fascinates me. The Colossus of Rhodes, was very important for the people in the past, it was a statue for their god. I think it is one of wonders, because of the statures high, but for me it is nothing that fascinates me like the hanging gardens!
5. The Pyramids of Egypt
Between c.2630 and c. 1640, the Pharaohs erected tombs for themselves. The oldest Pyramids were built in the third dynasty. But the true Pyramid, which is a real triangle, was developed during the fourth dynasty.
6. The Mausoleum of Halicarassus
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was the tomb of Maussolus. He lived 377- 353 and was one of the most famous members of the Hecatomnid dynasty. His wife and his successor ordered the construction of a monument. It was huge and the greatest sculptures of Greece were involved in this project. The tower was destroyed by the Rhodian Knights in 1522.
7. The Temple of Artemis of Ephesus
The Temple was a very ancient Sanctuary for a mother goddess, who protected a pregnant woman. It was built in a marshy area, to protect it against earthquakes. It was also called MEGABYXUS, which means "the one set free for the cult of the divinity".
The Sanctuary was destroyed in 356 BCE, by a fire.

In my essay I will be writing about the Empires that arose in the region of Mesopotamia. The first empire that was in this region was that of Ur. The city where Abraham was from. After this empire fell the Old Babylonian Empire came into power. We already know about the Babylonians so I won’t go into any detail. When the Babylonians were defeated the Kassite tribes took control of the city. The Kassites were quickly Babylonized, and that was the start of the Kassite Dynasty. The first king of the Kassite Dynasty was Agum-Kakrîme. He drove out the Hittites from the area and took back a statue of one of the false gods. This was all in vain because an Assyrian king Tikulti-Ninurta took the statue back and after its return Elam took the statue. The Elimites also took the famous law code of Hammurabi. The Kassites where replaced by people from the Dynasty of Isin. The king of the Empire was named Nebuchadnezzar I. (At first I was really confused when I read this because I thought that it was talking about the Nebuchadnezzar from the Neo-Babylonian Empire.) This empire was short live and the cities eventually went back to being independent.
ReplyDeleteI think that the empires did not last very long because of the limited amount of resources in surrounding areas and limited space. also one thing that I noticed was that the city of Babylon was often just reused by other empires. Because of this I think that another reason for the common change in rulers is that people didn’t want to have to build new cities so they went to where there were ones already in existence.
the seven wonders of the ancient world are; 1: The Walls of Babylon
ReplyDelete2: Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia
3: The hangong gardens of Babylon
4: The colossus of Rhodes
5: The pyrmids of Egypt
6: The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
and 7: The temple of Artemis in Ephesus.
the seven wonder of the ancient world that i think is so fantastic is the prymids of egypt. i mean look at them. it had to take some skillfull and thoughtful people to come up with that idea. its still gets to me everytime i see one and im like, how did the get it to stand up like that. to this day i think is awsome that they made them to stand through all that time. i think that it should be on the list, "7wonders of the world," today because if the time and architexture it took to build that. i personaly dont think the Phidias' statue of Zeus and Olympia i a seven wonder. i think this because he was just another false god that they had to worship back then. i looked him up on a site and they said that he was a spritual leader of the gods and men but how could he be when he was basicly just another pigment of their imagination.
got my info off of www.livius.org and http://www.pantheon.org/articles/z/zeus.html
on 9-3-10 the "zeus" article was by ron leadbetter and the "7 wonders...." was by Jona Lendering
the titles of these are zues and the 7 wonders of the ancient world.
I only used the website that was given. It was a really good site. Thanks Mr. Akers.

ReplyDeletei love what you said about the hangong gardens. how he did that all for his wife. it would have to be a very thoughtful man to do that for somebody he loves. number 4 on the seven wonders list just didnt catch my intrest either. it was very boring. i mean why would that even be on there. it just didnt make sense to me what someone would call that beauty.i really do belive everything you have said in this article.
emily lynn
i really like how you would go and visit the pyrmids out of all the wonders. that one also struck out to me. i really liked how they were always so artistic about building them. they probably didnt know that what they were building back then was still gonna be up and standing today. i like how they were always so..umm i dont know...anusing. just the way they lived would be something i would like to experience in these days. the egyptians fasinate me.
I was going to write about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient world. It seems like a more opinionated and simple essay to tackle, but seeing that everyone else has wrote about it I decided to discuss the war between the Romans and the Jews.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Jews were under Roman rule, they had a certain amount of freedom. They could keep their religion and culture, but they had to abide by some Roman rules. They were required to pay taxes and, like others, submit to Roman rulers. Apparently the Jews were dissatisfied with this lifestyle and they revolted. There was religious tension between the Romans and the Jews which probably sent both Empires over the edge, but it is believed that the cause of the violence between them was because of taxes.
Some Jews were opposed to the war, some were eager to be out of Roman control. They went back and forth for years until the Romans set fire to the Temple. This probably devastated the Jews for the Temple symbolized everything that is holy, everything that is the Torah and the law.
Not all of the Jews desired to revolt. Some Jews might have stuck up their noses at the rebellious and some at the compliant. I believe that they were both right. The Jewish people were required to claim Caesar is god which obviously goes against their faith and religious beliefs. When you add taxes to that equation, I see why they would have revolted. I can understand their reasoning. It is never right to compromise your beliefs just because of other peoples influence. To say that the Jews were wrong in revolting would be out of line. Only they know what really happened back then. We might not know the whole story.

For my essay I am writing about the Seven Wonders in the World. They are very wonderful. The list of the Seven Wonders includes the following: the walls of Babylon, Phidias’ statue of Zeus, the hanging gardens, the Egyptian pyramids, the Colossus of Rhodes, the temple of Atemis of Ephesus, and the mausoleum of Halicarnassus. A few that stick out to me is the Babylonian hanging gardens and the Egyptian pyramids. I think that the hanging gardens are so cool because my family owns a flower place and the hanging gardens are well… flowers. I think it really cool that people thought of that back in that time. I also think that the Egyptian pyramids are so cool because the Egyptians didn’t have the tools we have today they still built these beautiful tombs. These tombs would be used to burry their pharaohs and wealthy Egyptians. The Egyptians used slaves and the natural resources to build the pyramids. These pyramids would be booby trapped to keep tomb raiders out, and the pharaoh would be buried with all of his or her servants and with art and spices. These two of the seven Wonders of the World have so much background just think about all of the other Wonders.

ReplyDeleteMy essay is about the third option, what is the most impressive wonder of the ancient world. The seven wonders are: The walls of Babylon, Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia, The hanging gardens of Babylon, The colossus of Rhodes, The pyramids of Egypt, The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and The temple of Artemis in Ephesus. It amazes me that these old people could create such advanced, large projects like these and does them so well.
I’ve chosen the walls of Babylon to be the most impressive, most because everyone chose the pyramids of Giza or I would have chosen it. I’ve saw years ago in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and if I can remember just one thing than it’s that wall. It’s incredible how high this wall is.
Least impressive would be the Mausoleum and Halicarnassus even though it’s amazing. I choose it most because there’s none of it left, so I can’t tell what it would’ve looked like because there aren’t even artists who have remade it. It was a tomb and I have a hard time considering a tomb to be as impressive as the colossus of Rhodes of some of the others but all the wonders are incredible, especially for that time period.
In my essay I will be writing about the seven wonders of the world. The first wonder of the world is the walls of Babylon. The wall of Babylon is very impressive, but not the most impressing in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe second wonder of the world id Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia. The Athenian sculptor Phidias, he and his colleagues colotes and panaenus moved to Olympia to make one supreme god of Greece, Zeus. The Olympic games were held in his honor. In my opinion this is one of the least impressive wonders of the world.
The third wonder of the world id the hanging gardens of Babylon. By account these gardens were built to cheer up Nebuchanezzers homesick wife. I think this isn't as great as it sounds because the gardens did not actually hang there were just over hanging the palace walls.
The four wonder of the world is the Colossus of Rhodes. This statue was built to the sun god after losing a battle, and this is one of my leaast favorite wonders of the world.
The fifth wonder of the worls is the pyramids of Egypt. These were massive tumbs built for there Pharaohs. The pyramids of Egypt are by far my favorite wonder of the world, just because how they built it. They were so advanced to be able to build that.
The sixth wonder of the world is The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. This was the tomb of Maussolus of Caria. It was erected by brick and covered by marble, and was at least 41 meters high.
The seventh wonder of the world is the temple of Artemis of Ephesus. It was built in a marshy area to protect it from earth quakes. In the summer of 356 b.c. however it burned down. Some pieces of it are still kept in a British museum. In my opinion this was a well thought out temple because it was protected from earthquakes and other things. That's all for my essay on the seven wonders of the world.

ReplyDeleteI interested about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (or the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) well known list of remarkable constructions of classical antiquity ,They located around the Mediterranean. In turn, this original list has inspired innumerable versions through the ages, often in keeping with the limited number of seven entries. Of the original Seven Wonders, only one—the Great Pyramid of Giza—has remained relatively intact into the current day.
ReplyDeleteIt contains of :
1. Great Pyramid of Giza – This is the most well-known one because we could also called the Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Cheops ,is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza and it is also the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact. It is believed the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty constructed over a 20-year period concluding around 2560 BC. There are an estimated 2.3 million stones in the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure.
2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon – This is my favorite one because I have just already studied about Nebuchadnezzar II and .The gardens were built by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II around 600 BC. He is reported to have constructed the gardens to please his homesick wife, Amytis of Media, who longed for the trees and fragrant plants of her homeland Persia.Nebuchadnezzar II also used massive slabs of stone, which was unheard of in Babylon, to prevent the water from eroding the ground.
3.Statue of Zeus at Olympia - was one of the largest temples built in ancient times. It stood in the Greek city of Ephesus, on the west coast of what is now Turkey. The temple was entirely marble.
4.Temple of Artemis at Ephesus – This is the most beautiful temple also known as Temple of Diana, was a Greek temple dedicated to a goddess Greeks identified as Artemis around 550 BC at Ephesus (in present-day Turkey). The whole temple was made of marble except for the roof, and built by the Cretan architect Chersiphron and his son ,Metagenes, at the expense of Croesus of Lydia.
5. Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassus -The Greek architects Satyros and Pythios designed the tomb. Four famous Greek sculptors—Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas, and Timotheus. The upper part of the mausoleum was destroyed by an earthquake in the A.D. 1200’s, and only pieces of the building and its decorations remain. The British Museum in London contains some sculptures from the mausoleum.
6.Colossus of Rhodes - a statue of the Greek god Helios, erected in the city of Rhodes on the Greek island of Rhodes by Chares of Lindos between 292 and 280 BC.Before its destruction, the Colossus of Rhodes stood over 30 meters (107 ft) high, making it one of the tallest statues of the ancient world.
7.Lighthouse of Alexandria - It stood on the island of Pharos in the harbor of Alexandria, Egypt. It became so famous that the word pharos came to mean lighthouse, design by the Greek architect

ReplyDeleteI decided to do my essay on the 7 Ancient Wonders. The original list of the seven wonders is now lost, however we do know that it was a list of 7 greek buildings. In the 3rd century non greek buildings were included as well. This expressed the idea that barbarians could also create fine works of art as well. The list includes: the walls of Babylon, Phidias’ statue of zues in Olympia, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the colossus of Rhodes, the pyramids of Egypt, the mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and the temple of artimis in Ephesus. In my opinion the greatest of these wonders has to be the pyramids. Simply because they are still standing today. They are severely eroded but still look amazing. I think that the least of these had to be the hanging gardens of Babylon. They were just plants and flowers that hung from pots in the ceiling. However I do believe that the hanging gardens was probably the most beautiful of the seven to look at. The others are amazing but are just statues and architecture. The hanging hardens on the other hand was alive and growing. So even though I believe it was the least I do believe it was the most beautiful.

I'm choosing to write about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World because architecture has always fascinated me. Although the original list is lost, Antipater of Sidon made one of the first known lists that survived in the Anthologia Palatina (collection of poetry). His list includes the following:
ReplyDelete1. The walls of Babylon
2. Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia
3. The hanging gardens of Babylon
4. The colossus of Rhodes
5. The pyramids of Egypt
6. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
7. The temple of Artemis in Ephesus
The most interesting of the Seven, to me, is the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus. This sanctuary was for the goddess of Artemis, who protected pregnant women. The Ephesus Artemis was a goddess of fertility and often pictured as draped with eggs and multiple breasts (creepy, right?) The temple was built in a swampy area to protect from earthquakes. Everything but the roof was covered in marble. There were 127 columns in total, and each reached the heights of 60 ft while the temple itself reached 425 feet high. In the year of 356 BCE, the temple burnt down; the temple was destroyed several times and then rebuilt just as many times.
The least impressive, would be: The Walls of Babylon. I think this because the description wasn't accurate and they're not sure whether it's really the Walls of Babylon or Thebes in Egypt. Plus, its just some gates and walls.
The site given used "BCE" instead of just "B.C."; it meaning before common/christian era. It's pretty much the secular way of dating time before Christ.
I decided to do my essay on the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. Although the original list was lost, Antipater of Sidon wrote the list, that we use today. The Seven Wonders are:
ReplyDelete1. The walls of Babylon
2. Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia
3. The hanging gardens of Babylon
4. The colossus of Rhodes
5. The pyramids of Egypt
6. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
7. The temple of Artemis in Ephesus
When I was reading about The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus I found information about lighthouses being built. I've always liked lighthouses, so I kept reading. The lighthouse of Alexandria was originally built as a tall building to allow Alexandria to be seen from far away. It was later turned into a lighthouse to allow sailors to benefit from it as well. I also was intrested in the Hanging Garden of Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar built this garden for his wife in hopes that she would stop missing her hometown. No one today knows where the garden was there was no information recorded of it.
Before I get started I forgot to cite my sources.
ReplyDeleteworks cited: http://wwwlivus.org/ja-jn/jewishwars + wikipedia.com
Hey Private Elijah: I liked what you had to say about the 7 Wonders of the World. Some of the seven wonders I hadn't heard of either. I think the pyramids are really impressive. First of all they are still standing unlike any of the other structures. I think all the mysteries behind the pyramids makes it even more interesting. Hieroglyphics make even more of a mystery. I can't imagine loosing a language for all those years until the Rosetta Stone was found.
Morgan, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who didn't do a report on the Seven Wonders of the World. All the battles of the Jewish people against the Romans seem, sad to me. At what point they could have changed and gotten along with the Romans will remain a mystery. People "loosing face" in Roman politics might have been prevented had people had better skills in diplomacy and negotiations. Lives would have been saved and the history of the Jewish nation would have had a happier ending.
Well, I first decided to write about the Babylonian empire. But after writing it down, I didn't really like my essay. So I though about writing on the seven wonders.... Until I saw that almost everyone wrote about that. So, here's my original essay - The Babylonian Empire.
ReplyDeleteBabylon, the capital of Assyria, was ruled by king Nebuchadnezzar. The empire had been overthrown by Cyrus the Great, king of Perssia. But, the city still remained important in the cultural center of things.
The 23rd century BC is the earliest known mention of the city of Babylon. After the end of the last Sumerian dynasty, the Amorites had control of most of Mesopotamia, where they found small kingdoms. During the "Amorite Period", the most powerful were Larsa and Isin. One of the Amorite dynasties was established in Babylon, a city-state, which would take on the other city-states. This started the "old Babylonian Empire".
The Old Babylonian Empire.
Under the rule of Hammurabi, the city of babylon dominated Mesopotamia. Hammurabi was a good ruler, and one of the best things he did was his code of law.
The Babylonians were involved in trading with city-states in the west.
The Babylonian army was strong, well disciplined, and the conquored city-states, such as: Isin, Uruk, Eshnunna, and the kingdon Mari. But, Mesopotamia didn't have defendable boundaries, so it was very vulnerable. Babylon was turned over to the Kassites after Babylon was taken over by the Hittite king, Mursil I. The Kassites renamed babylon, " Kar-Duniast". The rule over them lasted for 576 years.
The Neo-Babylonian Empire.
Although Babylon had been captured, the Assyrians always restored Babylonian loyalty. But, all that would change when Assurbanipal, the last strong Assyrian ruler, died.
Offer and defend your opinion as to why this region so often saw powerful empires arise only to fall quickly after a few generations. --
-- Well, I think maybe it was because the thought having a strong king was enough. Now, that is quite important, but you also have to have a strong army to defend yourself. And you have to have the natural resources to defend yourself from other Empires. they just didn't have that I guess.
Now you see why I didn't like this essay. But, it's what I got. I couldn't get much out of the websites. Sorry.
biggin,
ReplyDeleteyour essay intersted me greatly i had never heard about this woman or her story after reading further into what you had said it began to interest me even more. i agree with all that you said and it is so very true that they brought it all upon themselves.
Dear Ashley Glass =),
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your essay and thought you did do a great job. You had many solid facts and it flowed very well. I learned so much about the Babylonian empire and liked how you made it easy t understand the essay. I cannot wait until I get to read your essay.
Yours Truly,
Gagalicious.
Dear Emily,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your essay and thought you did do a great job. I agree that the lighthouses were very cool. I also wrote my essay on the Seven Wonders of the World but my favorites were the hanging gardens and the pyramids of Egypt. I think it is cool because my room has been like the sea shore so there are lighthouses in my room so your essay really did stick out and I do think that the lighthouses are cool. Plus in the foggy nights they can save sailors lives.
Yours Truly,
Gagalicious.
The seven wonders of the Ancient World
ReplyDeleteThe Walls of Babylon , Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia , the hanging gardens of Babylon , the Colossus of Rhodes, the pyramids of Egypt , the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the temple of Artemis of Ephesus.
My favorite of the seven wonders are the pyramids of Egypt, because I was already there and it was so huge. Also I think always that was not possible in this time to create this. Between c.2630 and c.1640 the Egyptians create tombs for the pharaohs ( kings in Egypt ) to honor. The oldest pyramid was built in third dynasty. “King Djoser was the first to pile several square tombs (mastabas) of decreasing size on top of each other, and created the first step pyramid”( cited http://www.livius.org/se-sg/7wonders/seven_wonders.html. number 5. the pyramids of Egypt line 3-5 Date: 09/04/2010). The famous pyramid of Cheops, Chefren, and Mycerinus at Gizehwere were erected by Snofru's successors.
My second wonder is the Hanging gardens of Babylon. The king Nebuchadnezzar built this park for his wife and for the princess Media. He created the park, because he hoped that she would forget her homeland.
Dear Eileen,
ReplyDeleteI love that really what you said about the seven wonders of the ancient World . You did a great job. I think that's very good that you've explained each world wonder. I also wrote my essay on the Seven Wonders of the World and favorite are the pyramids of Egypt because probably are the most impressive monument. This is so old and still in good condition. That is awesome. But my favorite also is the hanging gardens. That sounds good and that is a good idea that he built the park for his wife and for the princess media, because he hoped that she would forget her homeland.
Dear Ashley Glass =) ,
You did a great job I really enjoyed your essay. That was a very good choose. I agree all what do you say about the Babylonian Empire. It fits perfectly into our lesson. You explained very well.
Eileen, I really liked your essay about the seven wonders. My favorite of the wonders were the walls of Babylon but I agree with you that the hanging gardens must have been absolutely beautiful. It is a sign of true love, and it is a pity that they don’t exist anymore. I would really like to see them. Besides, the way you described every single wonder was another aspect of your essay that I liked.
ReplyDeleteMorgan, you are one of few who chose to write about a different topic. Well done, your essay taught me a couple of new things. I didn’t know that the Jews fought against the Romans so it was interesting for me to read and learn about it. I agree with you that the Romans should have left the Jews alone. However, the Romans were brutal and conquerors. If I had been a Jew during that time, I would have been angry because they had to vow allegiance to an earthly king. But there is only one true God, and I would have liked to be strong enough to live with the consequences rather than to say something I don’t believe.
ReplyDeleteI'm choosing to make my essay over the third option; the seven wonders of the ancient world.
ReplyDeleteHere is a list of the ancient seven wonders made by Antipater of Sidon:
~The walls of babylon
~Phidias' statue of Zues in Olympia
~The hanging gardens of Babylon
~The colossus of Rhodes
~The pyramids of Egypt
~The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus
~The temple of Artemis in Ephesus
Which was the most impressive? Definitly the collusus of Rhodes, because it was big(40 meters high), has a great pose, and inspired our modern day statue of liberty. It is a shame that it collapsed after an earthquake.
The least impressive? Obviously the hanging garden, and for two good reasons: 1~I could; go outside right now; find a pot; hang it up; put in soil; put in water; put in seeds, and ta-da you have hanging gardens.[or I could just go get topsy turvy from Wal-Mart] 2~At least with all the other wonders they could prove that they excisted Archeologicly. I mean, you would at least think that they could find the remains of the giant walls that were arounds gardens. To know that the gardens excisted all we have to go by are accounts(sounds just like bigfoot).
So other than than the gardens, all seven of the ancient wonders were mind blowing.

Willus,
ReplyDeleteI think you are right on the fact that the collusus of Rhodes was the most impressive. But I don' t think that the Hanging Garden is the least impressive. It' s a lot of work to do all of those things.. It' s not true that it' s like if you go to Walmart and by a plant! It' s a massive work you have to do! If you want it to look good you have to be always there, watch after it..
Lauren, you right, so right... the goddess of fertility; Ephesus Artemis, so sounds like something that's creepy, lame and gives me bad dreams.. kind of like Shyness Machine Girl... I'm still recovering from watching that movie..
ReplyDeleteBut how could you not be impressed by the walls of Babylon? I mean, it's a HUGE wall. I don't think your going to go to the Great Wall of China and be unimpressed.
Biggin, I don't really know who you are, but your one of the few people who didn't choose option three, that's pretty cool.
Jess Megs 15, did you really see the statue??? How could you look at that statue of Helios and not be awestruck by its complexity, and awesome pose?????
Camden, your essay was probably the best one on this blog. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that you did alot of research for this essay.
Abbie,
ReplyDeleteYou did a very good job on your essay!! The story of the Jews is quite sad and interesting. The fact that the Romans burned the temple make me sad.. You are right on the point that some of them were for war, and some not. And they had to find a way to have freedom. So their reaction is understanding. I hope that some day soon they could have a land on their on. And that no body will take it back from them.
Megan, I really enjoyed reading your essay. I also love thinking and reading about the Hanging gardens. I think it was really impressive. And also, it was built because of love to another person. We have the same arguments in our essays, and I just like the way you wrote about the Hanging Gardens, something so speciall and still privat, because he just made it for ONE person.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you read my essay, you will see, that this wonder impressed me the same way than you.
GaGalicious, I liked your essay really much. You also wrote about the hanging gardens, like me, but you wrote about another wonder which impressed you, the Pyramids. I really think those buildings are very cool to look at. I liked the way you explained why you have chose those to wonders. And so I enjoyed reading about it. You wrote very much about, how the Egyptians built those beautiful buildings, and that made me think about them.
(158 words
Biggin, I really enjoyed your essay. The topic that you chose is something that I really do not know muck about. I never knew that there was a woman ruler a Judea. Another thing that I thought was really interesting was that the problems at the time were all caused by sibling rivalry. I guess that some things are timeless. I also think it was cool how Pompey played Aristobulus in order to complete his master plan. I also think that you are right about the division between the country being the reason that they were so easily taken over. Over all I think that you had an amazing essay. Keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteWillus, I feel obligated to tell you thank you for saying that I had the best essay. I really appreciate the comment. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAbbie and Ashley, I would like to thank you two for not doing your essays on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
ReplyDeleteDear Elena,
ReplyDeleteI like your essay very much. You wrote about every single wonder of the ancient world. I liked it because I know now your opinion. I think you’re right, every single one is magnificent and I think the same like you, the Walls of Babylon are one of the most important wonders in the world.
I was surprised that you think the state of Zeus is the most impressive wonder of the ancient world. I didn’t know much about it before. So thank you for teaching me about it. ;)
Good Job Elena!
Dear Alex,
My opinion is nearly the same like you. I think the pyramids are very impressive and you’re right the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is the least impressive. My opinion is the Lighthouse of Alexandria is more important than the Mausoleum. So I think it should be a wonder and not the Mausoleum.
Good Job!
Paco, I completely agree that the pyramids are the most fascinating of the Seven Wonders of the World. I would have loved to see how they would look back in the time of the Egyptians. I think the hanging gardens would have been awesome to see.
ReplyDeleteEmily, my uncle has always been fascinated with lighthouses. He collects little statues of them. I’m not sure why, but I know he would have loved to see lighthouse of Alexandria.
Ashley, thank you. Thank you for not writing about the Seven Wonders. It was quite refreshing to read your essay about Babylon. You’re essay was great! You really got to the point of things and didn’t try to beat around the bush with overcomplicated sentences
Camden, you’re welcome! I found the Seven Wonders to be the easy option of this assignment. I suppose that’s why everyone went with it. Anyway, your essay was very informative. I agree with you about why the Babylonians never lasted very long. Their lack of resources definitely played a huge part in everything.

ReplyDeleteI liked your essay. I agree with you completely about the pyramids. There is such a mystery behind them. They are the only one of the seven wonders that are still standing today so that’s gotta say something about them even if the glossy layer of granite or whatever it was that made them shiny has eroded away. Also I agree about the hanging gardens of Babylon. They were just plants and we cant even find a single trace of the gardens anywhere.

ReplyDeleteI have to say that I can not agree with you about the Colossus of Rhodes being the greatest. It was just a big statue. There has been a lot of big statues in that time. the greatest had to have been the pyramids. They are huge and magnificent works of art. Plus they are the only standing wonder of them all!! I do agree with the hanging gardens part. They are just plants after all.
Morgan,
ReplyDeleteYour report was very good. It was informational and kept my interest. I agree that there had to have been two sides to the rebel against the roman rule. Yeah well good job :)
Private Elijah,
ReplyDeleteI really like your essay. I learned a lot from it, I did the same essay and didnt know there were 14 wonders of the world. Such as the Roman Colosseum and Solomons Temple. I also agree with you that the Great Pyramids of Egypt built in the city of Giza were without a doubt by far the most remarkable wonder of the world. I dont completely agree with you though the Walls of Babylon were the least wonderful wonders of the world. I thought that it was pretty amazing, but i guess it is just opinionated. All together great essay. Good job!

ReplyDeleteI actually really like your essay. I’m glad someone did something other than the 7 Wonders. I learned quite a bit from your essay. You had a lot of really good information in there that I didn’t know before about the Babylonian Dynasty. Good job!
Paco, (I’m not sure who you are.)
But, good job on your essay. I agree with you on the pyramids being one of the most amazing of the 7 wonders. It’s crazy that after so long they are still standing today! I have to disagree with you about the Hanging Gardens being the least impressive of the 7. That’s just my opinion though. Good job on your essay.
Private Elijah,
Your essay was fantastic and I agree with everything you said in yours. I also find the pyramids to be quite amazing. It shocks me how the Egyptians were able to build these pyramids and they are still standing today. It’s amazing that they were used for tombs and hiding treasure and other things. They sound pretty complex. Anyways, Awesome job Elizabeth!
Willus great essay, I was very impressed with what you wrote. Your essay was very informative, and kept me interested. Once i read what you wrote I completely agree that the hanging gardens were the least spectacular. That was a very good essay. Great job!
ReplyDeleteAbbie, I really liked your essay and I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't write about The Seven wonders of the Ancient World. Your essay was very informative and interesting. You did a good job!
ReplyDeleteLauren, I enjoyed your essay. it was quite interesting and I found it to be amazing that back then, the temple reached 425 feet high. That's just amazing to me that they were able to do that kind of work back then. And with the tools they had, it's so cool how they did it. Good Job!
Stella, you had a good essay, very inteseting. The list of things sounds pretty cool, and the one you pick for your favorite sounds ecspecially interesting. Although, I would have to say the one that just sounds the coolest ot me, would be the hanging gardens of Babylon. I don't know why, but it just stands out to me. But anyways, good job on your essay Stella.
Morgan,
ReplyDeleteI like your essay that you wrote about the fighting between Jewish and the Romans .I think it kind of special and very interested .This essay could tell us many things about the war like how was it happening ? , how Jews struggled to regain their freedom for many years? And I think Romans let the Jews do pretty much whatever they wanted. So this is Awesome. You did a very good job.
Paco, you're thoughts on the Seven Wonders were pretty interesting. I definitely agree with you! It is amazing that the pyramids are still standing. And the hanging gardens had to be incredible! I also agree that out of the Seven, there isn't one thats ISN'T impressive.
ReplyDeleteLauren,
ReplyDeleteI totally agreed with you that the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus is the interested one of all. For the goddess of Artemis, who protected pregnant women .The Temple of Artemis in Ephesus was contained with a goodness and it built in a very good area. So I like your essay and GREAT JOB !!
Well, Willus. First of all, your essays always crack me up. You state a lot of facts, not only in your essay but also in responses(to me), that are completely irrelevant.
ReplyDeleteBut over all, you're essay was good. You're opinions are pretty interesting. The Collusus of Rhodes definitely had an awesome pose, and the statue's size is incredible. I do disagree with you about the Hanging Gardens, though. I think that any of these Wonders would have taken a lot of work; and they all represented something significant.
Alexandrea Grace like you i also did my essay of The Seven Wounders of the Ancient World. But i hade no clue that the wall of Babylon was said to have hundreads and gates but in reality only had eight.I definatly agree with you about the Wall of Babylon it was very amazing and had many beautiful features!I also think that the pyramids would be pretty impressive to but i had no clue that they were made to look like artificial moutains. All in all i think your essay was very good and very interesting good job Alexandrea Grace!
ReplyDeletePaco i like you and many others wrote about The Seven Ancient Wounders. After reading many other essays i alos think one of the greatest of the wounders are the pyramids. It is also amazing that they are still standing today! But i do however belive that the hanging gardens were the most amazing one.Not because it was hanging plants from pots it believe it was amazing because it was created all because of one mans love for a woman. But either way your essya was very good! =D
