As we continue our discussion of the history of Rome I want you to consider the enormous amount of dedication and sacrifice it must have taken for the democratic system to have been adopted - and then notice how quickly the Romans lost it with the dawn of the age of emperors. The right to choose our representatives in government is sacred and includes an incredible responsibility. Voters absolutely must make an honest effort to understand the issues and carefully consider the longterm effects of the proposed plans in order to make a reasonable choice. For example, polls conducted this week on college campuses in states where key elections are being held found that many of the students were unaware of the positions of the candidates - on issues the students said they cared about! (I suppose we can all be thankful that the youth voter turnout is consistently low).
This week's assignment is an exercise in democracy. I want you to visit the site http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/2010_Elections/page?id=10476449 to view an analysis of the upcoming election. Then I want you to choose any election on the ABC News site and report back on it. Who is the incumbent, who is the challenger (include the party affiliation) and who does ABC News think will win? Then find a news story about the campaign and share what you learn (cite your source). Finally, tell us who you think should be elected (or good/bad points about both candidates if you wish to keep your politics a secret).
Remember that the minimum requirement is 200 words - you don't have to write a book! Your responses to your classmates have been good; keep up the good work!
Politics. A subject usualy avoided in order to not step on anyone's toes. Perhaps that is why I was very hesitant and nervous about this weeks assignment. However, I will do my best. Of all the elections in the United States, I decided to pick our state of Kentucky.
ReplyDeleteAs most people are away, the people running for Senate are Jack Conway for the Democrats and Rand Paul for the Replublicans. The ABC page believes this race to be a toss-up with either canidate winning. Because neither have run before, or so I believe (I may well be wrong) neither is the incumbent or challenger. Perhaps this is why ABC believes this to be a toss-up race.
Before I begin to talk about who I think should win, I would like to note that I am neither a Democrat or a Replublican. I prefer to think of myself as Independant. In other words, I don't care about the party, I just look at what they plan to do, the canidate's background, and their personality in the few ways I can. If this offends anyone, then sorry.
I personally lean more toward the Replublican canidate Rand Paul. Although I do not know much about either canidate, what I do know leads me to want Rand Paul in office. Some of these reasons include that he is older and is a family man three times over. Also, he opened his own ophthalmology clinic. This tells me that he is an ambitious man who has a way of making things work out.
Although Jack Conway has been Attourney General, he just strikes me as the wrong type of person to be in office. No specific reason, just something I feel. I'm sorry if this offends anyone. This essay is about what I think, so please do not get offensive. Perhaps I am wrong in what I wrote, but I do not know enough about either canidate, even after research, to have a clear view of who would be better to represent Kentucky in the Senate.

I will be doing my report on the state of North Carolina’s election. There are two reasons that I chose this state. One is that I used to live there and the other is that I figure most people will chose Kentucky. The state has been historically Republican. In fact the North Carolina has voted Republican in all except for four presidential elections since 1960, and one of those was John F. Kennedy over Richard Nixon.
ReplyDeleteAs you can see from the first paragraph North Carolina is a strong Republican state. Because of this it should be no surprise that the incumbent is Republican Richard Burr. Democrat Elaine Marshall is the challenger. ABC News thinks that Burr will win.
In my further research into the matter I found some campaign commercials for Richard Burr. Based on my findings Richard Burr is running a campaign based on controlled spending and creation of jobs. He emphasizes that he is working for the people of main street. In one of his adds he emphasizes how he will listen to the people and work for them. He also brings up that he has been called a “Hero for Taxpayers.” He also uses phrases “That’s the North Carolina way” to support that he is a down home North Carolinian.
In my research into Elaine Marshall I found that she also tries to convey a since that she is working for the people. She uses things like the fact that Burr was a member of the senate during the economic crisis to make it look like the economic problems were his fault. On a less serious note I noticed that during one of her campaign videos she is standing in front a map of North Carolina that is Backwards. Now this does not seem to convey a since of intelligence on the part of the candidate.
From what I found in my research I think that Richard Burr would make a better senator.

My report is going to be over California's election. The incumbent is Democrat Barbara Boxer and the challenger is Republican Carly Fiorina. The Democrats have more seats than the Republicans but the upcoming election is very close. ABC News thinks that Boxer will win with 1% more than Fiorina. The upcoming election is on November 2, 2010.
ReplyDeleteBoxer is seeking for her fourth term. So it is very hard for the Republicans to win in California. This time it is maybe possible. California has an alarming 12.3% unemployment rate. So Fiorina is blaming Boxer and the Democrats for the economic crisis. That is Fiorina's main mantra. She wants to create jobs and economic growth.
Boxer already survived tough races before. She uses Fiorina's conservative position on opening California for offshore-drilling to show that her challenger is bad. Especially after the BP oil disaster is a wide majority against offshore-drilling what plays in her favor.
From what I read I think Boxer should be elected as Senator especially after the oil disaster.

Simon,
ReplyDeleteFrom what I have seen of elections (which isn't very much, I will admit) it seems to me that most people only care about slamming the other canidate and making them look bad and themselves look good. It bugs me when they do, but I guess that's politics for ya. I agree with what you put about Boxer should win. Although I myself am a conservative (well, sorta.) I agree that, at the moment, no more offshore-digging should be enforced. If that means Boxer should win California's race, then so be it. Good essay!
For this week’s essay I’m writing on the senate election of the state of Oklahoma. The two men running are Jim Rogers and Tom Coburn. Jim Rogers is the democrat and Tom Coburn is the republican also the incumbent. According to Abc news Oklahoma is solid republican but who knows, that could change easily.
ReplyDeleteWhen I began researching Jim Rogers I couldn’t find hardly anything but eventually I came across a very interesting article. The article stated that Rogers doesn’t do much campaigning. His campaigning consists of standing on the streets of Midwest City (I have been there by the way) with home-made signs. He also spends no time raising money for his campaign. Before running for the 2010 elections he has run, unsuccessfully, 3 times for the U.S Senate. Because he has no campaign website I don’t know much else about him.
On the other hand, I found a ton of information for Tom Coburn. Coburn Served 3 terms in congress before deciding to run for Senate. Tom Coburn would like to increase access of health care, stop the spending of special projects that cannot be afforded, keep the second amendment protected (right to bear arms), and secure borders.
After what I read I would have to say that I would want Tom Coburn in Senate. I say this off of what I read and researched. But because of the lack of information about Jim Rogers that could change if he had good ideas.
I am not really into politics; politics is something that never really intrigued me. It never really did stick out to me, it didn’t give me that wonder and the intrigue of many different situations. And I guess you could say it still doesn’t, but I have come to realize that to some extent, I have to be. I need to be.
ReplyDeleteI have chosen to report upon the Kentucky Senate political races. I wanted to do something different, like write about Colorado’s elections. But I thought this would teach me more, and show me things about my current state of Kentucky.
The two men that are running for election are Jack Conway, as the Democrat, and Ran Paul, as the Republican. The way that I am going to start off this research is as follows:
Jack Conway, a man of forty-one years of age. He is Roman Catholic, lives in Louisville, and has four children. Rand Paul, who is forty-seven. Is a Presbyterian, he lives in Bowling Green, and grew up with four siblings. I see these men, as men. Not by their party. I see what they believe in, and what they stand for. There both followers of Christ, they just worship Him in different ways. Jack Conway is for abortion, but not late-term abortion. He thinks that there should be less abortion as possible. Rand Paul on the other hand Rand Paul opposes Abortion and supports the Life at Conception Act, even with incest and rape cases. Though- Rand Paul supports the “Morning After Pill”. Jack Conway supports Government funding to fight drug abuse, and Rand Paul is right there along with him. Rand Paul also opposes same-sex marriage.
When we had that Mock Election at the skool a few weeks back I voted for Rand Paul, the forty-seven year old who opposed abortion, and lives in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I voted for him not because he was a republican, but for he stood for. And if I had another chance to vote again, my vote would be the same.
I forgot the references.

Charity,
ReplyDeleteReally great essay!! I agree completly with who you voted for. I also voted for Paul back in the mock election because of what he stood for. For me, the decison on who to vote for was easy: For or against abortion. Again, great essay!!!
I’m going to write about the Senate Election in Kentucky. The two candidates running are Jack Conway and Rand Paul. Jack Conway is a democrat, and Rand Paul is a republican. ABC states that Kentucky is a toss up, meaning unpredictable. Poll averages as of now are Rand Paul with 46% and Jack Conway with 42%.
ReplyDeleteWhile searching for information about the election, I realized why politics do not interest me. I believe campaigning brings out the worst in candidates which isn’t what the citizens want to see (at least not me). When I was reading articles about each candidate I found one that stuck out to me. It was speaking of Conway’s “Aqua Buddha” ad, he was making statements of Rand Paul’s past. The past shouldn’t matter while looking for someone to run the future, yes, we want someone who will take care of us as a state, and do what is best for us. Campaign ads like “Aqua Buddha” make me not want to vote at all. To me it seems like immaturity, and I don’t want someone like that in office.
For me, I have not been looking into the election and I don’t know who I would vote for. I would have to look into things and spend a lot of time thinking beyond what is needed for this essay. I am not a person into politics, and picking someone from reading a few articles doesn’t seem right, even if it is for a History essay.

@Camden:
ReplyDeleteI really like your essay. You have a lot of informations about the election. You also wrote why you chose this state. I like that your essay is very organized and clear. You have a lot of different informations about each candidate and you are showing what his different arguments are. Very good job!! After I was done with reading your essay I understood why you think Burr should be Senator.
I really like this week’s assignment. Thank you, Mr. Akers, for this chance to express my political views. I hope “Sie haben einen guten tag” reading this. American political races are very competitive during this season of current politics.
ReplyDeleteThe race I chose to write about is the senate race of Kentucky. The two candidates are Jack Conway for the Democratic Party and Rand Paul for the Republican Party. The incumbent is Jack Conway.
This race is a tossup and recent polls show a tight race in Kentucky for this U.S. Senate. A Lexington newspaper reveals that the Republican Rand Paul is supported by 48 percent of potential voters. Conway is favored by 43 percent. Nine percent are undecided. However, there is a margin of error of plus or minus 4 points, which is a slight lead for Paul. Since most of the incumbents are struggling to keep their positions this year because of the dissatisfaction in America, I feel like Rand Paul will win this Senate seat. His political views are more associated with Kentucky’s conservative values. Also, he has never been involved in politics in the past, and this is popular with the population of Kentucky. It will be an exciting race to watch.

Danke, Estrella!
ReplyDeleteWell, the people are voting for Jack Conway (democrats) and Rand Paul (Republican).I think they are not really sure who will win, because no one had been in this "buisiness" before. So this voting will be very interessting and a new experience for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI read that a lot of people would vote for Rand Paul. Obama made already plans to win the voters back. He is planing to speak in five US-states in only four days. You can see the most dissatisfaction in Kentucky. They turn away from the democratic side and are willing to vote for the republican. You can see that people react really quick when they dissatisfaction with the politic.
On the otherside is Jack Conway. Clinton appeared a few days ago in kentucky to support the Democrat jack Conway against the Tea Party candidate Paul Rand. But Paul Rand came with his arguments against Clinton and his History ( I think everyone knows what I'am talking about!) So at the moment it is really not easy to say who will make it and win this.
I really think that all the people think a lot about both candidates to make the right decision.

On June first of this year the democratic party elected candidate William Barnes to represent the democrats, while Richard Shelby was elected to represent the republicans. These two opposing parties are running to be Senator for the state of Alabama. Currently, the incumbent is Richard Shelby (R). If Richard Shelby win, he will be serving his fifth term as senator. He was first elected to the Senate as a Democrat in 1986 and switched parties in 1994 when Republicans won control of Congress. Senator Shelby has served for eight years in Alabamas state Senate; another eight years in the U.S. House.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Barnes (D) is a political newcomer althoguh he has practiced law in Birmingham, AL. He has also previously worked as a psychologist and lawyer for the military. Mr. William Barnes represents the democrats in how to avoid a double dip recession. He said "Enough is enough."
Candidate Richard Shelby has apparently been a great senator for Alabama considering he has served eight years as the state senator. As Private Elija said earlier in her report, im not strictly democratic or republican. No matter what im registered as, when it comes down to the final vote im for whoever has best interest for the select seat they're running for.
In this case, I do believe Richard Shelby would be in best interest for Alabama. He's done a great job so far and seems like a good senator. He has experience and dedication which makes for a great leader.

I will start my essay by saying that I really don’t enjoy discussing politics simply because: one, I don’t really know enough about any of it to have much of an opinion. Two, because I really don’t like the arguments it sometimes causes. I have become very good at avoiding conflict, but if there is something that i really stand against i will definitely stand for what i believe in.
ReplyDeleteSo, I chose to write this essay on the Election in Kentucky. I really didn’t know anything about
either of the two candidates ( Rand Paul: who is part of the Republican party and Jack Conway:
who is part of the Democratic party) until the Mock Elections. It informed me, in a nutshell, of what their plans are if they were put in office. In all honesty, i don’t even know what all Republicans and Democrats stand for, but one thing that sticks out to me, more than any, is abortion. That to me (which may seen like a small problem to some people) is something that
could change my vote. I am not trying to say anything against those with the Democratic party, but that is something i simply cannot agree with.
At the Mock Elections, I do believe my vote was influenced by everyone else simply because i
had no idea what i was doing, and as much as i hate to share my vote: i chose Rand Paul. I am not a Republican or a Democrat, I am, i guess, what they call Independent.
Anyway, again, i am not very updated on politics and, in all honest, it really doesn't interest me, but to make an effort to make the state of Kentucky a better place: I will do my best to make wise decisions when i am able to vote.
Charity,
ReplyDeleteGreat essay! I learned quite a bit about the candidates from reading your essay. I like the way you put the spiritual side in the essay, because i think people tend to forget about that very thing when they are voting. Again great job!
Elizabeth,
First, I will say: i like the way you started your essay, because i am also very hessitent to talk about politics with people. I hate conflics because like i said in my essay i really wouldn't know what i'm talking about and that i really just get wound up about those things once i get involved in them. I don't enjoy getting upset over that stuff. Haha. I also liked the middle and the ending of your essay as well (that was a joke. Haha) But seriously, i really liked your essay. Good job, my dear!

That is an essay written by Willi and Jerome. It is about the Senate elections of the state of California. The first candidate is Barbara Boxer, she is a Democrat and incumbent, and the second one is Carly Fiorina, she is a Republican. The date of primary was June 8, 2010. The Governor is in the moment Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is a Republican. The senators right now are Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein. Both are Democrats. The population is nearly 37,000,000 people. This is a very heated battle, because the incumbent has been known to have very liberal policies. Also the Republican has conservative views.
ReplyDeleteThe Real Clear Politics Poll Averages is 45 % (Barbara Boxer), 43 % (Carly Fiorina).
The difference at the stake between the Republican and Democrats are 77 seats.
A bad thing is that we didn’t find information’s about the opinion of “ABC News” who they think will win. But our opinion is we cannot really tell who will win. It’s a “neck to neck” race.
So we are very excited about that incredible fight about both candidates. Lots people are very upset about that Barbara Boxer is extremely liberal and so there is maybe a chance for Carly Fiorina.
There is a big tension between both candidates.
That was Willi Nowak and Jerome Geils-Lindemann for SCS.

this weeks assignment has me kinda nervous... not so much because im worried about stepping on anyones toes because honestly i dont care, im not a bit worried about it. but more so because polotics just is not my specialty.
ReplyDeletebut none the less i picked the elections in kentucky between Rand Paul and Jack conway. the election between these two has become something that does not go without being talked about around here. it has been quoted as "the nastiest race in history" which that could definitely be debated im sure but none the less it is not necessary for two men to be so juevinille.
when asked in the homework article to state who i think will win i froze... again not because i care to state my polotics but because i have absoulutely no clue who has a better chance or who has the upper hand in the matter. and also because its so hard to tell whats the truth and whats is lies.
but like i said at the beginning of this essay polotics are not a high point in my life so therefore this is probably not one of my best essay but never the less i gave it my best effort :)
Simon Heinzel, you had a good essay but I am going to have to respectfully disagree. I do not think that Boxer should win. In your essay you mentioned that the unemployment rate in California is at 12.3%. With an unemployment rate that high jobs need to be created. One quick way to create long term jobs would be to open off shore drilling. How often does some thing like the gulf oil spill happen? The answer to that is not very. This is simply a matter of do the benefits out way the risks. In this situation I would have to say that the benefits by far out way the risks. That is why I believe that Fiorina would be a good choice if California wants to do something about the unemployment.
ReplyDeleteEmma.Delaine, your essay was very good. One thing that I found very interesting was the way that Jim Rodgers runs his campaign. It probably has to be the worst campaign that I have ever heard of. That is probably why he has failed to be elected three times. Over all you had a very good essay.
ReplyDeleteBased on four fundamental measures of public attitudes ABC News has come up with a newly minted Frustration index.
ReplyDeleteHere are the four topics.
1.) Views on the economy.
2.) Satisfaction with government.
3.) Support for incumbents.
4.) Ratings of the president.
On a scale of 0-100. One hundred being the worse, the index on June 8. 2010 rated American voters at 67. ABC polls stated that 29% are now inclined to re-elect their representative. Sixty
percent say they want to find some one else.
This is the highest on record according to the ABC polls.
In Kentucky running for state senate is Jack Conway. He has been Kentucky's attorney general
since 2008. He tried to run for Congress in 2002, but lost.He is the democratic candidate.
Running against him is Rand Paul who is an ophthalmologist who has never ran for office.
His father is a Rep. Ron Paul from Texas.
Looking at Jack Conway's web cite he states all his positions. He states that he supports the new health care law but is not real clear if he is for the whole package. He sounds as if he supports some of the measures that the House has passed. He did a really bad job of smearing
Rand Paul. According to the web cite that I went to it just might back fire.
Rand Paul being a new comer and from a family of politicians seems to realize that we must have some drastic measures of change."While we keep our promised to seniors we also cannot stick our heads in the sand. I will speak the
truth. I am not afraid to start bi-partisan, adult discussions of Social-Security and Medicare. So this program can continue for our children and grandchildren. Rand Paul is the person I would vote for, I only hope that he can learn a lesson. People want change.

@Alexandria:
ReplyDeleteyour essay is very good. You give a lot of informations about the two candidates. I learned a lot while reading your essay. Good job.
@Camden:
I don't know if it's allowed to comment a comment but i just do it.
You're right that this oil disaster doesn't happen very often, but that still isn't a reason to increase the risk! Fact is that it happened altough the risk was very small and that means it can happen again. How many animals died because of the oil? How many money they had to spent to finally, after some failed tries, stop the oil? How money did they lose through the lost of the oil into the ocean?
Also a big point is that the oil killed a lot of animals in the coast regions. So all the jobs at the coast who are related to fishing at the coast or tourists at the beaches, whatever are now not available anymore. So the unemployment increases and if that would happen at the coast of California, it wouldn't be a big help.
Also the program of Boxer doesn't say that they don't want to create new jobs! I guess that that is something what every government wants to do and espacially after the financial crisis are the unemplyment rates everywhere higher than usually.
I don t know very much about American politics but I guess I’ll do my best so you can see what my ideas are and also my view with the French government.
ReplyDeleteI’ll talk about the election of the senate for the state of Kentucky.
First of all, the two candidates are Jack Conway (democratic party) and Rand Paul (republican party).
This is what Jack Conway’ s campaign says:
“Jack Conway has the experience and integrity needed to fix Washington and stand up for the people of Kentucky.
He's now serving as attorney general, working to make Kentucky a safer place to live, work, and raise a family.
As senator, he will create opportunity and jobs for all Kentuckians and will work to restore fiscal responsibility and accountability in Washington. He has the bold vision and ideas needed to bring a new type of leadership to Kentucky.”
But Rand Paul is more concerned about taxes, health care, federal reserve, privacy and liberty, energy innovation.
I think both of these campaigns will be good for our state and country. But according to the abc news site, the democratic have more influence on the state. So according to the abc news site, Jack Conway will be at the senate.
For my report I am going to do it in Kentucky for obvious reason, 1-because I live in Kentucky, 2-because I like to talk about who we are going to elect for our state. I don't really mind talking about politics and I hope I don't step on any bodies toes with who I would prefer in congress. As i hope most of you know there is a big election going on in Kentucky between democrat Jack Conway and republican Rand Paul. We are picking who to represent us in congress. I personally would vote for Rand Paul because, 1-he is republican, 2-and I support what he believes in and what he is going to do for us if and when elected into congress. I would not vote for Jack Conway because, 1-he is a democrat and I personally wouldn't vote for a democrat unless the had some really good views, 2-I also do not support his beliefs and how he is outlandish in talking about the religious views of Rand Paul. Rand Paul denounced the commercial during his opening statement and quoted Scripture to deflect the attack while calling himself a "pro-life Christian." Conway offered no apology and even repeated the accusations in his ad, which started airing statewide Friday night. So over all in the election I want Rand Paul to win.
ReplyDeletehttp://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=11903983
I think I’m going to write about the election in North Carolina because the past presidential election results in North Carolina was really close : Barack Obama
ReplyDeleteWho froms Democrat got 2,123,390 votes and 49.9% : John McCain who froms
Republican got 2,109,698 votes and 49.5% .I think it is really interested .There are the Democratic candidates ,Elaine Marshall, to close the gap in her race against Republican incumbent ,Richard Burr. The poll PPP about the election said that “ a significant number of North Carolina voters still say they don't have enough information to formulate an opinion on either of the Democratic candidates, and both Democracies have a lot of work to do to raise their profiles. On the bright side, it appears that either Marshall or Cunningham would have a fighting chance against Burr in the general election” .But while Marshall has increased her support, Burr's support has remained steady at 48 percent, I thought its still high but he's right at the borderline of crossing the 50 percent milestone needed to win. But in the other way I think Marshall has been able to increase her support by luring back some Democrats who were undecided or planning to vote for Burr.
I think most of people probably around 49% is voting for Burr still because he has some important advantages. By the way Marshall has improved her backing from fellow Democrats.

I’m going to write my essay about the Senate election in Kentucky. The two candidates that are running are Jack Conway and Rand Paul. Rand Paul is representing the Republican Party and Jack Conway the Democratic Party. According to what I found on the ABC site, Kentucky is a toss-up state. This means that the election isn’t leaning to much on either side and that any party could take the win. As of now Rand Paul is leading Jack Conway ever so slightly 46% to 42%.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely despise politics. This time of the year every single year the candidates always talk bad about each other. Most of the adds that I see on tv don’t even tell us what that person will even do for us as that elected official. They mostly say something about their competitor doing something bad or not being fit for the job because they don’t think things through enough. Just like what Jack Conway’s “Aqua Buddha” add. All he talks about is Rand Paul’s past, and it’s annoying. Frankly it gets on my last nerve to see people act this way instead of doing what they are suppose to do and help the people with their problems.
As of now I am saying that I want Rand Paul to win. Just because he seems not to have as many of these adds about his competitor being bad for the job. Some will say this isn’t a good way to be judging them, but to me it says he won’t just sit there and blame someone else for everything that happens
Like most people, I’m not a huge fan of politics. Really, they depress me. It’s hard for me to watch the news and really think about what I’m hearing without getting angry. For this week’s essay, I’ve decided to go with Kentucky’s coming election. I remember that Rand Paul won the mock election at our school. It’s obvious that we lean toward the republican side, but what about the real election?
ReplyDeleteAccording to a recent poll on ABC, Rand Paul (Republican) is beating Jack Conway (Democrat) by 4%. That is a very small percentage. This could easily change.
Jack Conway believes that abortion should be “as rare as possible, but should be kept safe and legal.” He believes there is nothing wrong with owning a gun, and approved of the new health care law our President came up with.
Rand Paul opposes the new health care plan, is against same-sex marriage, and he opposes abortion. He supports the legalization of medical marijuana, and wants to restore the value of the American dollar.
I think my number one question when I think about voting someone into office is this: “Is he for or against abortion?” If he or she is for abortion, I more than likely would not vote for them. Therefore, I would probably be voting for Rand Paul. There are so many other details that could play a part in my decision, but at the moment that is all I really have to say.

In the state of Colorado, there has been two senators that have been elected to represent their state, both of the current senators how ever, are both of the democratic party, Mark Udall and Michael Bennet, there are two people that have been elected to represent the people of Colorado as a Senator, for the democrats, they have chosen Michael Bennet to try and get re elected as a senator, and the republican party has chose Ken Buck to run against him to be Senator . So far it is a toss up between the two candidates. But so far, Ken buck is winning over michael bennet by one a one point spread, the polls show that the score so far is ken buck has 46 % and Michael Bennet has 45 %. It is a very close race between the two of them in this race to be elected as a senator of the state of Colorado. There are 37 seats at stake right now for the senators. There are 59 seats for senators held by the democrats, and 19 seats up for a chanceof someone else getting a seat, and 41 republican senator seats, and 18 of them up for someone new to get a seat.I think Ken Buck should win.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to add my references to my essay.

to emma delaine, I really liked your essay on the senate election in Oklahoma between jim rogers who is a democrat, and tom coburn, who is the republican running for a seat in the senate and is the incumbent, and i really learned a lot about the that race for senate in Oklahoma too from your essay. i think tom coburns has some very good veiws, to increase health care, spot spending ' on things that cant be afforded, keep our ammendments, and secure the borders, and I think he is more for the people and i like his veiws, I agree with you, and think he is a better choice than the other candidate to win senate. But great job on your essay, i really liked it.

ReplyDeleteto Alexandria Grace, I really liked your essay and learned a lot about on the senate election in Alabama between the republican Richard Shelby, and the democrat William Barnes, and I agree that Richard Shelby would be a better candidate between the two. great job though, i really liked it.
ReplyDeleteCamden, I like your report and found it very informative and fun to read. I did not know that north Carolina voted republican except four years since 1960. I thought it was pretty interesting. You did a great job with finding information about each ones campaign. I also would like to say that I agree that Richard burr would make a better senator. I think it's pretty funny that you said in one of Elaine Marshall's campaign videos she is standing infront of a backward map of north carolina haha, that's pretty funny. But one of the reasons I liked Richard burr better, just by reading your report,is that he said he will listen to the people and work for the people. I think that's very important to get a good working man to be a leader and someone that will take a step up and work hard. It's sad that in the world today more and more people are becoming lazy. So very good job Camden!!
ReplyDeleteHey Paco, I'm in agreement with you concerning negative campaign adds. I think most of the comments made on our homework assignment mentions how uninteresting and or unappealing these campaign adds are on T.V. "Frankly it gets on my last nerve to see people act this way instead of doing what they are suppose to do and help people with their problems." It's a shame we can't market some ideas on how to run an appealing campaign!
ReplyDeleteEmma Delaine -Thanks for writing about the Oklahoma senate election. The story about Jim Rogers not doing much campaigning is interesting.Standing on the street in Midwest City with homemade signs might be economical (and we all know that would be a revelation for the senate) but not practical.I feel the senator that gets that seat needs to understand what it takes to make something happen. Who knows what Jim Rogers ideas are if we can't read his sign.
Billy The Squid, Nice report I enjoyed reading and good job making it informative!! Good Job Billy. ha
ReplyDeleteC*S...3, Interesting essay! I really don’t know anything about politics in Colorado so thank you for giving me a little idea of what is going on there. I think it’ s interesting that the republican party is also having a lot of popularity in Kentucky. But our president is from the democratic party.
ReplyDeleteAbbie, Really Good essay! I don’t think I’ ll vote for someone that’s just against abortion. For me it’ s not really a major point, I prefer seeing all the other things that he want’ s to do for our state. And it’ s the same thing for our president. Even if he is against it, the senate and the house will have to be okay with it. The president can’ t do what ever he want’s! Well again, good essay!!
Paco, Really good essay! You are right on the fact that all those add against each other is not very good. But I’ m sorry, Rand Paul does a lot of them too. I really think they should stop being not respectful to each other, but always try to do better then the other.
Simon, I think your essay was really good, because you had some details in your article, which I not even saw in the given article from the ABC news. You worked a lot with facts and with exact percentages, which made the writing look really good and even kind of professional.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading it and I got a lot of new information. Keep up your good work!
Elena, I liked your essay really much, because you used quotes! And this is something really good, because, you can use them to support your own oppinion or thinking of their work! I didn't think about using some of them, but I'm sure it would have showed more about their thinking and strategy! You also wrote about the things they want to change or work with, when they win. Keep up your good work !
Simon Heinzel, it is easy to understand why this senate race is now so close. Although the liberal state of California is unsatisfied with Boxer, they might find it difficult to vote for the more conservative republican candidate Fiorina. This is the dilemma in most of the nation’s political races because the United States seems to be split 50% to 50% liberal versus conservative. I was excited to see that you chose this race since it typifies what is going on in the rest of the nation. It seems very similar to what is going on in the senate race of Kentucky with Paul and Conway where the voters are split down the middle as well.
ReplyDeleteCharity, I also am not particularly intrigued by politics either, but I really like the fact that you wrote about the candidates personal lives which defines their political beliefs. When you can understand their backgrounds, it allows one to see if they could possibly support the candidate.
Alexandria Grace,
ReplyDeleteI really do like your essay because Alabama is a state that has a very interesting people that running to be be Senator for the state of Alabama. William Barnes to represent the democrats and Richard Shelby to represent the republicant and I agreed with you that Richard Shelby would be in the best choice for Alabama. Because he has done a great job also he has more experience . Good job Alex ;D
Paco,
ReplyDeleteI really like your essay because you gave us a good information I really enjoy reading your essay .You wrote about Senate election in Kentucky. Its really close to us and I knew some information about two candidates that are running are Jack Conway and Rand Paul. The Republican Party and Jack Conway the Democratic Party But you wrote more great information that I never known before like Kentucky is a toss-up state. This means that the election isn’t leaning to much on either side and that any party could take the win. Good job!
Camden, thank you so much for doing your essay on North Carolina’s elections! I used to live there as well. I had considered doing my essay on their election, but I changed my mind so thanks for informing me on what I missed out on. I thought what you mentioned about Elaine’s campaign video with the backwards map was funny, but I wanted to see for myself. I looked it up and couldn’t help but laugh. I doubt it was her fault though. Who knows, maybe it was meant to be that way! Umm, I doubt it
ReplyDeleteSimon, I’ve noticed that a lot of people are focusing on creating more jobs and helping our economy. I could be totally wrong about this because I’m not that informed of politics, but it seems as though most candidates’ strategy is to correct the financial mistakes our government has been making. I like how you mentioned that oil spill, but I think that our approach to winning elections is rather immature. It makes me mad to see politicians trying to make their opponents look bad. This obviously shows a lot of separation in our country which isn’t going to be good if our financial situation continues to plummet.
Emily,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about hating politics. It does and probably always will draw the worst out in everybody. Most of the politicians only sit around and make commercials about how their completion doesn’t deserve the position and how they mess up and aren’t good for the job. I have seen the “Aqua Buddha” commercial, and quite frankly it makes me not want to vote for anyone. The people running just need to stop bad mouthing the others and actually focus on and tell the public what they are going to do to help the people in the future once they are elected.
Camden,
Very good essay. It was very informative about the elections taking place in North Carolina. From what you say I agree that Burr would make a great senator. I wouldn’t feel very comfortable having someone in power that puts maps up backwards. This shows a sign of unintelligence that I wouldn’t find very comforting.
Great job guys!
ReplyDeleteCamden,
ReplyDeleteY our essay was very good and very informative about North Carolina and there election. From what you told us about the election I would also have to go with Burr and that he would make a over all better senator. Elaine Marshall I think wouldn't make a good senator because it seems like you said that she tries to make it sound like it was Burr's fault for the economic crisis just because he was in senate. And what you said about how she standing in front of a map of North Carolina that was upside down. She obviously doesn't know as much about the state as she thinks she does. Great essay!
Alexandria Grace,
ReplyDeleteYour essay was very good and informative about the election going on in Alabama for state senator. I also agree that William Barnes should remain senator of Alabama, because he must be pretty good meaning he has served this long already. So I think it would be in the interest of Alabama to stay with him. Great Essay!
Mr. Akers, Im sorry if this is arriving a few minutes late. Im in a different tyme zone in Illinios and i have no idea if this is guna be late or not. But if there would be any grace, that would be rad.(: Thankyou.
ReplyDeletePaco, i rather enjoyed your essay. I know we talked about the same thing, but you shared from a different side of it. Lately the adds have been everywhere, talking bad about the other person. That is insane. I agree completely of what you wrote about! "to me it says he won’t just sit there and blame someone else for everything that happens" You know, thats somewhat how i feel about that also. Good work!!(:
Simon, i liked how you played the Oil Spill into your essay. It was also very smooth.
Emily Lynn(: My lovee. Your essay was beautiful! And so are you. You are such a great writer, and the Lord is going to and already is using you in that area of your life. But anyways back to the History assignment. Your intro was very nice, and i liked how you talked about the conflict and staying away, excpet for when some things we DO have to stand for them. Good job lovely.
billy the squid,
ReplyDeletegood job on your essay it was extremely informitive and i learned alot from it.
emily, your essay was very good i enjoyed reading it very much it was all stated quite nicely... your essays are pretty much always wonderful but with this one i could really see you side of things ... your view point. like i said in my essay polotics just strictly arent my thing. but it does interest me greatly to see everyones opinions none the less.
alexandria,
your essay was very good and i enjoyed reading it. you have a very expressive way of doing things and so your essays are another one of my favorites to read. like emily each week i look forward to what you have to say and each time they are all very educating so thanks for that and again good job :)
and just as a side note here... mr.akers i am sorry for the lateness of this portion of my homework. (not making excuses, just letting you know the reason)
Thanks Mr. Akers for letting me post this late - because of my concussion. I really appreciate it. I noticed that this week's posting is about the election results and my comments and predictions on this post. So.... I am not watching the election returns until after I post this. :)
ReplyDeleteI have chosen the Paul/Conway story to report on. Rand Paul (Republican) and Jack Conway (Democrat) are competing for the Kentucky U.S. Senate seat. While ABC predicts that the result is a toss up, I predict that Rand Paul will win.
Mr. Paul is a Bowling Green native who practices opthamology. He is a husband and father of three sons. Rand Paul seems to have a conservative platform to stand on. He is against aborton and the federal funding of it. He says he will not vote for a taxpayers bailout or an unbalanced budget. He also takes the stand that he does not support Obama’s health care reform.
Mr. Conway is a Louisville native who is currently Kentucky Attorney General. While Conway has a conservative view of bearing arms and same-sex marriage he is liberal in his views on abortion, health care reform, and so on. He has gotten the reputation in this election of mud slinging. He has played dirty.
I do hope Mr. Paul wins. With all I have read, I believe Paul comes closer to what the Bible says than Mr. Conway does.

Emily Lynn – I have to agree with you that I don’t get very involved in politics. You said you didn’t like the arguments that it causes and I would have to agree. I’m not one for conflict either. The Conway campaign involved a whole lot of conflict. It is too bad that Jack Conway spent so much time and money trying to tear Rand Paul down. I believe that good will win out. Rand Paul comes closer to God’s man for the job that Conway does. Good essay Emily.
ReplyDeleteCamden - Great essay. I enjoyed reading about the info you gave on the North Carolina election. I hope Burr wins - sounds like he is a good guy.
