Homework 8, Due October 15, 2010

For the next couple of weeks we will be studying the greatest western empire of all time - the empire of ancient Rome. So much of western culture is derived from Rome - our languages, laws and politics, and even forms of recreation. Of course, as you've already noted, Rome was built on the heritage of other cultures that came earlier, but nowhere else do we see all these special western traits come together quite like the Roman empire. You might know, for example, that the Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian languages are all derived from the old Latin (called "vulgar Latin" because it was the language of the common people). You might even know that half of the modern English language is directly descended from the vulgar Latin (we'll discuss why when we talk about the history of England). But did you know that most of the major European cities today are built on the locations of Roman military forts? At the peak of the Roman Empire, not only did Rome control the Mediterranean world and the Middle East, but also North Africa and almost all of western Europe.

If you are a native of Kentucky it is likely that you have very little Roman ancestry, however. It is more likely that your ancestors (and mine) were uncivilized people like the Gaelic (or Celtic) or Germanic tribes. So how did the culture of Rome become the basis for the culture for all the rest of the European people groups? Well, that's an important topic we'll discuss in lecture over the next few days.

Your assignment for this week is to research life in ancient Rome and identify ways that Romans were SIMILAR TO residents of modern Somerset. Go to www.worldbookonline.com (choose the student section) and find the article "Rome, ancient" (found at the link http://worldbookonline.com/student/article?id=ar474350&st=life+in+ancient+rome ). You will have to sign in to World Book: your id is "scs" and your password is "cougars". Identify and discuss two topics of similarities that you find.

Remember that your essay must be at least 200 words and you must leave comments on the essays of at least two others (totally 150 words). Your essays are due Friday evening by midnight; the responses are due Sunday evening by midnight. Give it your best effort!

  1. Rome. One of, if not the, greatest empire in all of history. Conquerors of old. Seperated, suspended in time for centuries and centuries. So how do these ancient people influence us to this day here in little ol' Somerset, Kentucky?

In the Roman empire there were many different people. There were people from France, Italy, Portugal, Africa, Greece. The people spoke many languages, though the main langauges were Latin and Greek. The languages and people may be different today here in Somerset, but the idea remains the same. Just as the Romans, we are mixed people groups. We have Latin Americans, African Americans, Native Americans, and so on. Though you mostly here English, you also hear Spanish as well as other languages.

Whenever you think of city life in ancient Rome, perhaps you think of dirty, ragged, uncivilized people. Perhaps some where that way, but the ancient Romans had public buildings, sewage systems, and water-supply systems. They even had arenas and theaters! Just as today in Somerset we have Cinema 8 and the Center, the Romans had their own versions.

For the people who didn't live in the cities, they were mostly farmers and shephards. Today, there are plenty of farmers in and around Somerset. My neighbors are shephards, showing that not much has changed in those aspects, except for how we farm and shephard.

Though we are centuries ahead of the Romans, it is plain to see that many things are still either the same, or similar, to those from back then. Even though Rome is thousands of miles across the ocean and centuries are between us, we here in little ol' Somerset, Kentucky, share stuff with the Romans of ancient times.

  2. Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome was a small little farming community on the bank site of the Tibes River in central Italy and it became on of the greatest empires in history, and collapsed then. The City of Rome was founded in 753 B.C. By 272 B.C the Roman Republic controlled most of the Italian Peninsula.
When Rome was founded a number of different tribes lived on the Italian Peninsula, with their own language and culture.

I would say similar is, that in a city (I don’t know about Somerset) life people from different places, but most of the time, after they lived a while in that city they are able to speak the language!
It is also the same, that just people who are born in a country are the real citizens. In the ancient Rome it was kind of the same with their city life. Only the people who were born in this city were citizens. But this “rule” or “statement” reminds me of the modern society.
Sometimes and in some families it is still, that the father is the head of the family. It is not as strict as it was in the past, but you can still see it in families.

In the ancient Rome there were things we do not have in the modern society. We do not have the classes which was normal for the people in the past.
It was also a rule that when the king said something the people had to do it. Today there are more people in politic than just a king and his few consultants. Which is a big advantageous for the people.

  3. Ancient Rome was one of, if not the, most important civilizations in the ancient world. Rome set the standard for almost all of the great western civilizations to come. It also is responsible for setting the stage for the coming of Christ.

In this essay I will be comparing the similarities between the ancient Romans and the modern civilizations. One aspect of Roman culture that has lasted into the modern civilizations is the Forum. The Forum was a big open area at the center of the city that was lined with shops and other important buildings. The forum was also a place where people of all classes could mingle. The modern version of the Forum is a mall. Malls are centers of shopping in modern cities and are also a place where people of all kinds mingle.

During the time of the Roman Republic women were not given any rights. However during the Roman Empire women were given legal rights and the right to own property. Now it is extremely easy to see the similarities between this and modern society.

Another similarity between ancient Roman society and modern society is architecture. One of the main architectural things that we get from the Romans is the arch. Arches are used in many places today and are essential to modern architecture.

    ReplyDelete
  4. In some ways the Roman people can be viewed as very impressive, genious, trailblazers of European society.

According to Roman legend, the city of Rome was founded in 753 B.C. The Roman Empire governed about half of Europe, much of the Middle East, and the north coast of Africa. Though the West Roman Empire fell to Germanic invaders in A.D. 476, the Byzantine Empire continued for centuries.

I don't live in Somerset, but it's not that much different from London. Just like in Somerset they have Cinema 8, in ancient Rome they had theatres too, the colloseum was also like a theater for them too.. kinda sickening they found that much enjoyment in death. They was also simmilar in that they had a sewage system, though back then using the bathroom was a public thing. I also think it was pretty cool that they had bathhouses.. not sure they have that in America in general though(they have it in Japan).

It was an indefinite rule that when the king said something that the people had to do it. Today there are more people in politics than just a king and his few consultants, that gives us an advantage. We would be in trouble if Obama could do anything he wanted.

So looking at our advancedments you can see that Rome was the basis of what we are today. I guess we just got somewhat higher morals, and differents ways of thinking.

  5. Between the inhabitants of ancient Rome and the residents of Somerset/USA are some similarities.

One of these similarities is that only a citizen can become a senator or government official. That is the same in Somerset/USA. Only a natural born American can become president.

Then there was the law that only people who were born in Rome are citizens, so the majority were noncitizens. Later as Rome expanded it gave citizenship to more people in the empire and woman and children could become citizens too. In America you also have to be born in America or on a American ship or military base to be natural born American. Also like in Rome you still can become a citizen if you have been long enough in America and some ohter different conditions must be met.

Also the Roman citizens could vote for a representative like in America too.

In the Roman families was the father the head of the family and had a big authority. In some conservative families, the father is still the head of the family and can decide everything and the mother has to stay home and has to care for the children and the house-hold.

Most of the conquered regions kept their own native language although the offical languages were Latin and Greek. I don't know if that is the case in Somerset/USA too, but in Germany are also many immigrants who don't speak German and keep their own language.

  6. Rome was established as a small farming community in 753 B.C. It was established by the banks of the Tiber River which made it easy to use the water as a system of transportation.
Like Somerset the first Romans were farmers. Farmers planted in Spring and harvested in Fall. As Rome expanded small farmers were forced to to to war in the summertime and as they got further and further away from Rome they had to sell their farm because they couldn't get back in time to harvest. This led to large estates buying out the small farms. These large estates were called latifundia. Massive teams of slaves worked the latifundias.
    Unlike the farms in Somerset.
For these slaves and most small land owners rural life involved hard physical labor. We have county fairs and other sources of entertainment. The Roman calendar featured regular agriculture festivals. The games and entertainment at these festivals offered a break from the hardship.
Two achievements of Roman engineering is the arch and concrete. The Romans did not invent the arch but they made it bigger and better. The Romans did invent concrete which helped them with bridges and walls of buildings.Like Somerset, Roman engineer planned cities carefully. They set public buildings in central locations and provided sewage and water supply systems. Unlike people in Somerset people in Rome lived crammed in an apartment building 3-5 stories high.

  7. The beginning of ancient Rome starts with a story of how a small farming community on the bank of the Tiber river in central Italy grew to become one of the greatest, if not the greatest, ancient civilization, then collapsed. The city of Rome was founded in 753 B C. At its peak, in A D 100's and 200's, the Roman Empire governed about half of Europe, Most f the Middle East, and the northern coast of Africa. The empire then began to crumble, partly because it was too big for Rome to govern. The empire split, and the western roman empire fell to Germanic invaders, but the eastern roman empire, or the byzantine empire, continued for centuries. Ancient Rome had enormous influence on the development of western civilization. The Roman language became the basis of French, Italian, Spanish, and other languages. Its law also provided the foundation for the legal systems of most of the countries in western Europe. One way that Ancient roman life is similar to modern Somerset life is that Romans had roads that they used lie us, built bridges to cross like we use, and two of the things that made building large buildings possible, is their invention of concrete and the arch.

  8. to simon heinzel, i really liked your essay on the ancient roman life, and how they were similar to the way we live today in Somerset Kentucky. I learned a whole lot of info about ancient rome from your report as well. i learned about how only a citizen can become a senator or government official which is the same today, how only a citizen in America can become a senetor or a government official, or how they could vote for a representative, like we still do today, and that the father was the head of the family and had a large authority as well. But great job on your essay simon heinzel, i really enjoyed it.

  10. In 753BC the city of Rome was founded. The Italian Pennisula governed half of the Roman Republic. Like Somerset, Rome was populated with many different people, at that time called tribes. Most people today call them cliques or groups. Each had different cultures and languages like we do today. Rome had two official languages, Latin & Greek. In Somerset, we have one, English. A difference between here in Somerset and in Ancient Rome is that in Rome there were three groups the people were catagorized into; citizens, non-citizens, and slaves. Only citizens could become goverement officals & senators. Slaves were not free like the citizens & non-citizens. They were treated as property, used to do hard labor so the citzens and non-citizens didn't have too. Having slaves was a way of life, it didn't phase them how horrible they were treating other people that"weren't as good as them." In modern Somerset we do not have slaves, or people like slaves. Ancient Rome had one law, The Law of Twelve Tables. Later Ancient Rome made jus gentium, or law of nations, this was a set of legal priciples. It was based on common sense and fairness. In modern Somerset we are filled with rules & laws. Our rules are now more detailed and more strict than in Ancient Rome, we have more technology and people to keep safe.

  11. Rome is one of the most influential empires of all time. Their rapid expansion and variety of race made their empire one of great significance. While we all know how Rome influenced our government today, some fail to realize the simple similarities in our life today to that of Rome. Despite the numerous years between Somerset and Rome, we share many things.

For example, we all have plumbing and so did the Romans. To us, it is a necessity. It might have been for them too. The head of the household is the father, just as it is today. While we allow women to work full-time jobs, the Romans didn’t. It was an impossible thought. Even so, many of us still keep the concept of the man being the head of the house. Many Romans were farmers, just as some people in Somerset are.

As you can see, there are many simple things Rome and Somerset have in common. The concept of the father being the head of the household came from the Romans and carried out some beliefs today. The way their empire has affected us today is unbelievable. Without the Romans, I imagine life would be very different.

  15. Rome was a highly advanced civilization, one of the premier cultures of its era. In many ways, Rome was very unlike our current culture in America, especially Somerset, Kentucky. However, there are some likenesses between our two cultures. Rome is comparable to us today first, through similar systems of government and second, in the civil engineering feats.

Rome’s system of government was very democratic in nature. They had elected officials who were placed in power by the will and votes of their citizens. The officials made and carried out laws just like our system of government. It’s important to note though that the qualifications of being a citizen were very restrictive. Neither women nor slaves had any say in governmental issues. But, like our government, Rome had three branches, which were like judicial, legislative, and executive. This is one reason that Rome grew so strong and ruled most of the known world.

In civil engineering, Rome was remarkable. They built amazing structures during their time, like roadways and aqueducts for plumbing. The roads were very well planned and enabled the Romans to travel and control all of their territories. The aqueducts would be similar to our city plumbing systems carrying fresh water to all the houses and providing for public saunas.

  17. If I were to compare all the similarities between the residents of modern Somerset to the Romans im sure there would be many things to discuss. The two main things I am going to compare about the residents is our communication/ transportation and the head of the house. First, just like every other state in America, the people in Somerset have many ways of communication and transportation just like the Romans did. As I said, this could also be said about most every other city and America. Second, the men back in Roman days were the head of their house. I believe in modern day this has changed in many households but as for me living in somerset I know that a lot of houses here are still controlled By the father. Most of the decisions and choices for the family are decided by the father, just as they were in Rome. Even more so in Rome, the father had power over his entire household, his wife, children, slaves (back in roman days), and freedom. This concept isn't near as exaggerated today in Somerset, Ky as it was to the Roman people.
Now if we compared the residents of Rome to America there would probably be too many to write about but I would like to add that I sadly believe just like the Roman Empire, our country is headed for the same kind of fall.

  18. Stella,
Your report is very good and very interesting. I learned that Rome was outstanding with civil engineering, which I did not know. Although I did know about their great accomplishments, it still amazes me that all the stuff we do today with huge machines they did more than two thousand years ago without all our technology and massive machinery. I also think its cool that even today we are still carrying out pretty much the same system of government. Good Job Stella!!

I enjoyed reading your report!!

  20. Rome was a great empire. I think this is why we can find so much of the Acient Rome in our cultures:
First of all, in the language we speak. French, German, Italian, English, and much more languages have Latin background. This latin was called "vulgar latin". A lot of europeans school have vulgar latin classes. I think it just awesome that a so old language still lives in our. And that it wasnt totally lost.
The way the family is built too. The father is the head of the family. He is not very much into all that about cleaning and the childrens. He wrokes more with the official things. But he is still worried about education for his children. The mother is more like an assistant to do father even if these days the mother becomes more equal to the father than before.
Something that I see a lot in Franc is the shape of the city. Most of the cities in my country were built by the romans. We have the center of towrn, with the very old buildings, like the wall that protected the city were often built by the romans.
I think it' s really good for us to always remind are self were do we come from and what was the enfluance of another civilization on ours.

  21. Have you ever thought that a kingdom from so long ago could have affected our little town of Somerset? Could the routes of ancient Rome thrive into a massive tree called the United States? After the fall of Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire emerged to be one of the most influential societies that this world has ever seen. Believe it or not, our polis that we call Somerset has origins to the city of Ancient Rome.
The two that I will be discussing is; number one: The Land, and number two: The Trade.
    The Land
The city of Rome rested on seven hills near the Tiber River in central Italy. The city of Somerset rests in the seven hills near Lake Cumberland and is in central Kentucky.
    The Trade
Today, during modern society, we as a people import goods from everywhere. We manufacture some hear in the States, but most of our material needs come from China and other thriving foreign countries alike. During the Roman Empire, they shipped goods from India and China, as we still do today. In Rome they would grow and harvest some of their own crops, like we also still do, but also imported spices and finer things from surrounding city-states.
Today, things like trade and where people develop their homes into communities, are derived from mighty cities and civilizations.

  23. Like America, Rome was an untouchable super power. While it was nearly invinceable it had its faults like all other countries. A breif desciption of those faults is not really possible, but instead of contrasting its strengths and weaknesses let's look at how they compare to our own home town Somerset, KY.

Rome was very largely focused on entertaining to masses. Every ancient Roman would generally attend what they called "The Circus". Much like our cinemas and telivisions, it was about violoence, love, and other carnal things. Rome became so obsessed with these things that they eventually fell to the ground.

Farming also took up a large portion of everyday life. While most Somersetians no longer rely firsthand on farming in their own back yard, it is nothing foreign to see a farmer working on his land while driving on a major road way such as the parkway. Hands on labor was very common, though it was usually a skilled job because so much time was spent doing it. Master Farmers could make a good living.

  24. Rome was the most powerful and influential empires of all time. They grew rapidly and had adopted many different cultures and people into their own empire. This made them a great and very significant empire. Everyone knows how Rome influenced our government, however some fail to realize the simple everyday parts of life that we get from them. Rome and Somerset actually share many many things despite the long amount of time and distance between the two worlds.
One thing that we have that the Romans did to is something no one would think about for its simplicity in our everyday life, and that is plumbing. This complex network of drainage pipes in a necessity to us today, and could have been to them to. The rich always had it while the extremely poor went without. The middle and in between guys mostly had it as well. Another thing we have in common is the paterfamilias. Now if you say this in everyday conversation no one would know what you are talking about. This is Latin for father of the family. Basically what this concept did was to make the father the head of the household. If you look at the homes and family life of the people today; you will see that mostly the father is the head of the house. He pays the bills provides and supports his wife and children.

  25. The city of Rome was foudn in 752 B.C.Much like Somerset, Rome was a small farming community. Rome became one of the greatest empires in history. I couldn’t imagine Somerset becoming a great empire! The Roman Empire governed about half of Europe, much of the Middle East, and the north coast of Africa. The empire then began to crumble, partly because it was too big for Rome to govern. The empire split into two parts in A.D. 395, the West Roman Empire and the East Roman, or Byzantine, Empire. The West Roman Empire fell to Germanic invaders in A.D. 476, but the Byzantine Empire continued for centuries. I personally think that’s its very very good that Somerset never was a big empire. Think of all the trouble we would have went threw and things that could have been lost or never happened if we were to ever be a big empire like Rome. Im very glad that all we have in common there is that farming! Another thing we have in common with Rome would be their government system they had three branches like us Judicial, Legislative, and Executive. Although that helped Rome a lot and made them very strong and successful im not so sure that’s its been getting us very far lately haha.

  26. Well to start off, Ancient Rome is like Somerset because it was mostly a farming city next to a body of water and Somerset is mostly covered in farming land and we are by a body of water which we call Lake Cumberland. Also our land is fertile just like theirs was. Another thing that is similar is that it had a wide verity of people living there. Somerset has a variety of cultures and people living all in one city. It is so hard to think of the different cultures because there is too many to count. Just like back then, we built a center of town that usually has everything government related right there. It is in one central location do it is easier to find. Some cultural habits last a long time. In ancient Rome, most people were farmers and they planted their crops in the spring and harvested them in the fall. All farmers do that now unless it is a cold crop. Family life is somewhat similar but not at the same time. The mother doesn’t have to stay home but the father is the head of the household. There was a lot of public entertainment like there is today.

  28. Stella, Thank you for sharing on Rome being an advance civilization. I am amazed at the civil engineering that advanced the Roman empire. The Romans understood the necessity of good roadways.
They felt it was an essential means for the maintenance of their empire and of social prosperity as well."The roads were very well planned and enabled the Romans to travel and control all of their territories." I find it
interesting that that on the departure of the Romans from Britain most of the roads were
allowed to fall into decay and become some of the worst in Europe. Great job on your report Stella.
Elena, I really enjoyed your report. Thanks for explaining about the influence of Rome not only on Somerset but in Europe as well. I think that is really interesting to see how our language and languages all have influence from Rome. You said most of the cities in France were built by the Romans. That really amazes me. Camden, I enjoyed your essay. I liked the comparison you made between the Forum and the modern mall. I also learned that women were actually given rights during the Roman Empire, which I did not know before.

Willus, I found it very interesting how you talked about the colosseum being like one of today’s movie theatres here in Somerset, Kentucky. That is true, the colosseum was a place of entertainment like a cinema, but I am glad we don’t have the same kind of entertainment the Romans had. I’ve always wondered why Roman citizens were amazed by crucial actions like feeding people to lions.

  33. Elena,
I really enjoy reading your essay I liked the way tha you talk about the “vulgar Latin” in the past of Europe ,it’s interested and I totally agreed with you about the father is the head of the family .I think that way still happened in this time .And my favorite part is you talked about French buildings that influenced by Roman. You did a very great job.

  34. AlexandriaGrace ,
I like the ways that you compared between the modern Somerset and the Roman ,its really interesting .About communication/ transportation and the head of the house.the men back in Roman days were the head of their house. I’m pretty sure that the days have changed in many households ,but most of the decisions and choices for the family are decided by the father, just as they were in Rome. I really enjoy ur essay .Good job Alex!!

  35. Elena,

I really enjoyed your essay about the languages and family. It was very intresting what you said about the languages. I had never thought about that before I read your essay. Anyways, Awesome job!

    Abbie,

I liked that you pointed out more of the simple things that Rome and Somerset have in common. Your essay was very good. Great job, Abbie.

    Elizabeth,

Your essay was very good. The contrasts you made between Rome and Somerset were very well thought out and informimg. I didn't know a lot of what you had written before I read your essay. So, fantastic job on your essay, Elizabeth!

    Stella,

Fantastic job on your essay! I'm glad that you pointed out the liknesses of Rome and Somersets government. I dont think hardly anyone else wrote on that same subject. I hadnt really thought about that. Nice job!

  36. The ancient Romans were much more similar to the city of Somerset than most would think. Rome was the basis of pretty much everything we are today.
Firstly, farming is one of the main similarities. Farming is everywhere in Pulaski County; Yes, Somerset but also Eubank, Nancy, Burnside, Shopville. All of our surrounding cities. Although today not every individual is farming for themselves, there are farms all over the place that we are somewhat dependent on.
Secondly, I find it fascinating that the Romans had 50,000 miles worth of a road system. In Somerset, our only real major dependency of transportation is our road system. And like the Romans, our Postal stations are our main roads too.
Just about everything between us and the Romans, in some way, are similar.

  37. Emily, I like how you compared the tribes in Rome to our cliques. That is somewhat true, but I think the tribes of Rome were mostly separated by race or family backgrounds while cliques are separated by interests or popularity. Even so, that was a good comparison. Great job on your essay!

C*S…3, I hadn’t thought about the roads and bridges of Rome affecting how we travel today. That was a very good point and you did awesome on your essay. Oh, I also had no idea they invented concrete. That was cool.

Camden, when I was doing my research I skipped over the part about the Forum. Your essay was very informative. The Forum is more than likely our inspiration for malls. I also didn’t realize that the women were given the right to own their own property. I didn’t really expect that from Rome, especially since the man was so often the head of the house.

  38. Willus,
    Great essay! Everything you said is very true. I hadn't considered the similarity between our movie theaters today and their colosseums; As well, as our sewage systems. well done (;

    Simon,
The similarities you made were also ones I hadn't thought about. Although its not uncommon to see stay-at-home mothers, it's kind of odd that some women today are still forced to stay home because of their culture, or family or whatever the case may be.
    Good job.

    Abbie,
Your essay was direct and to the point. I agree with everything you said. Great Essay!

I agree with you, ancient Rome did set the stage for the coming of Christ. And I think its cool how the way they built there city has lasted until today. There’s might have been a lot more shops then we have today but it is really cool to think that some cultures last a very long time. I also think its cool how the arc has lasted so long. I could have gotten prettier the way they build them.
    Paco
I like how you said that they adapted to different cultures and people around them. I guess that’s what we have to do in today’s culture. Just learn and adapt. Have some culture infusion. Different cultures are really awesome top experience because then you get to see how people live and maybe even experience it. When you learn a new culture, you have to look at it with an open mind or else you will never learn anything. Because they did except the other cultural, they were a great empire. Ancient Rome has paved the way for many things today.

  40. Eileen, Thankyou for commenting on my essay. I don’t really know if its seven hills, but Somerset does rest within many mountains. For that part of my essay, I was just like whatever and being kind of stupid. So I just don’t want you to think that it really was seven because I was wrong about that.
Elena, Dearest. You essay was written beautifully. It really pulled me in and I loved how you ended it. “I think it' s really good for us to always remind are self were do we come from and what was the influence of another civilization on ours.” It left me thinkin(:
Lauren, I loved your essay. I liked how you talked about the transportation with the roadways. And even the mailing system. That was a very unique thing to talk about. Good job!!(:

  41. camden, you really did a good job on your essay about how life in ancient rome and how it is similar to life in somerset today,i really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot as well.the part about the forum was really interesting to learn about.i had no idea how similar it was to our mall.but great job on your essay, very informative.

stella you did a really good job on your essay.it was very interesting and very informative.i learned somethings i didnt know about.for examplefor example i learned that rome was very good with civil engineering.although i already knew that they had really great accomplishments.it still amazes me that all we do today with high tec machines they did more than two thousand years ago without our machinery.i also think its kool that we have pretty much the sane type of government they did so many years later.

  42. Today I am doing my essay on Roman Ancestry and if there are similar to Somerset Kentucky or different. Ancient Rome was a civilization that grew out of a small agricultural community, called the Etruscans, founded on the Italian Peninsula as early as the 10th century BC. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, and centered at the city of Rome, it became one of the largest empires in the ancient world.he Eastern Roman Empire, governed from Constantinople, after Diocletian divided the Empire in 286, and comprising Greece, the Balkans, Asia Minor, Syria and Egypt, survived this crisis. Despite the later loss of Syria and Egypt to the Arab-Islamic Empire, the Eastern Roman Empire continued for another millennium; until its remains were finally annexed by the emerging Turkish Empire. This eastern, Christian, medieval stage of the empire is usually called the Byzantine Empire by historians, though the Byzantines would have maintained that their nation was a continuation of the ancient Roman traditions.Roman civilization is often grouped into "classical antiquity" with ancient Greece, a civilization that, along with the Etruscan civilization and the many other civilizations they conquered and assimilated, inspired much of the culture of ancient Rome. Ancient Rome contributed greatly to the development of government, law, war, art, literature, architecture, technology, religion, and language in the Western world, and its history continues to have a major influence on the world today. Now this brings up the question is Rome similar or different to somerset today; I think Rome is like Somerset because of roads Rome had they were required for transportation and we are needed for transportation so I think we are some what alike. That is all for may essay on similarities between Rome and Somerset.

  44. Morgan, Really Good essay! I never thought about the comparison between, the "circus" and the television and movies. I think most of our stories are inspired by Ancient Rome. Again, very good job.

Elizabeth, I always enjoy reading your essays. You do a very good job! I really like your conclusion about the fact that we are maybe an ocean apart and also time separates us but we still have common things and I think we will always do. It funny if you think about them not realizing that they will have a so big impact on our society!

Charity, Very good essay! I never though about the seven hills and the lake! It' s just amazing how nature is made! And also traders, They already though about the way they could have things from other countries! I need to say that I' m amazed! So good job for finding those two similar things.

  45. Rome vs. Somerset KY
rome was founded in 753 B.C. By 272 B.C. at one point in time the empire was split into two parts... the west roman empire and the east roman empire. now as far as i know somerset was never split but the similarities between the two definitely exsist. When compared rome and somerset are quite alike in a variety of ways some may disagree but when you pick and pull you will see that like somerset, rome is made up of a variety of farmers. all working people growing and harvesting when the time was right. and another obvious similarity was were they were divided up into select classes of people. At the top were members of the Senate, who were often prosperous land owners. then you had your equites wealthy businessmen and merchants. Under the Roman emperors, equites held important government positions and assisted in the running of the empire. The majority of Roman citizens belonged to the lower classes. They were farmers, city workers, and soldiers. so there fore i rest my case... the similarites between rome and somerset are undeniable. the only majore differance that is mainly obvious today is that in this day and age slavery has been out lawed so unlike ancient rome we are slave free in somerset, ky.

  46. charity,
you did an awsome awsome job with your essay i never ever in a million years would have found those similarites. those of just things i simply did not think about. so i give you props on this one big time! so great job!

    lauren,
i really liked how you mentioned the similarites in our postal service and theirs thats something that normally really would not cross ones mind. so when i read it, it really kinda took me by surprise. so really good job with that and good job over all.

    megan,
while reading your essay i stumbled upon the part where you mentioned the three branches of government... yet another part i failed to notice. i find it very interesting though because with all of the possible governmental system in surprises me that an empire that is such a historical icon had the same system as us. so all in all very good job on your essay.

I loved your essay! We found out a lot of the same things from the text. I completely agree about all the similarities that you pointed out. There are so many common things that we don’t realize are from Rome that actually are directly derived from there! Such as the paterfamilias. Pretty much every single household in Somerset is run by the father. Not something we would think about, but is a direct concept straight from Rome!

    Solis
Great Essay! I liked how you pointed out about a lot of us being farmers. When you think of Rome you think of powerful might civilizations. With a vast army that conquered all it opponents. You don’t however think of all the people who had to farm to come up with enough food to feed that vast army that conquered so many people. Without the farmers how long do you think Rome would have lasted? 10-20 years? Nooooo! Rome wouldn’t have even started without its farmers. Without them providing food no one else would have had time to go and build things or conquer its foes. Farming is the basic foundation of every civilization that most don’t think of.
