Homework 8, Due October 14, 2011

This is our second Civil War related assignment, and I hope you are enjoying learning about this significant event in American history. I am, as usual, very pleased with the quality of this past week's essays, and you deserve kudos for the very excellent work you have done as a class! I am disappointed that some students have chosen to forego the homework experience, but I assure you that there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth in short order as the first grading period comes to an end.

That being said, let me address a couple of issues that affect only a few students but need to be restated for everyone to hear. First, a relatively minor issue, is remembering to write gramatically. While you are not likely to lose points for style and quality of prose, plz dnt use IM and txt language - there's a place and time for that...not here, and not now! The other issue is of great importance to me, and one that I will spend some class time emphasizing. That is avoiding plaigerism. You absolutely cannot use someone else's words and claim them as your own! When you use someone's ideas (not a crime) you must cite the reference (give credit where credit is due). Word of warning to everyone, bad things happen to students who cut corners!

Now, on to our Civil War topic - Abraham Lincoln. During class we will discuss some of the numerous setbacks in Lincoln's life: business failures, political disasters, bungled military experiences, and even a complete nervous breakdown. It would be unfair to the man NOT to mention these things, for they are the obstacles he overcame to become what many believe to be the greatest of all American presidents. His words live on, and for nearly one hundred fifty years we Americans have pondered his place in history.

Lincoln was known to be very friendly, to tell funny stories and laugh loudly with friends. Even during the Civil War he took time to return letters written from children. (Taking the advice of one small girl, he grew a beard when she suggested it would make his face look better). He was a loving father who loved to spend time with his children, reading to them daily and referring to them by nicknames.

While Lincoln was often disatisfied with his commanding generals (except Grant) he was revered by the soldiers in the Union army and visited them as often as possible. One sergeant shouted at Lincoln, calling him a rather unpleasant name ("fool" being the part that can be repeated) when Lincoln peeped over a wall of defense so he could get a better view of the rebels on the enemy lines. Lincoln recognized his mistake, and the sergeant got away with it!

As you all know by now, Lincoln was born in Kentucky but left as a young boy when his family moved to Indiana. Here are some things you might be interested in: Lincoln was named after his grandfather, a Kentucky pioneer that was killed in an Indian attack. Lincoln's grandparents' marriage certificate is still on file in Springfield, KY. Lincoln's birthplace in Hodgenville was just that - his family moved to a small farm now located on Highway 31E south of Bardstown, where he formed his first memories. As a small child the Lincolns relocated to Indiana, where he grew up before moving to Illinois as a young adult to begin his career.

Lincoln's wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, was from Lexington, and her family home still stands today. Her family was wealthy and prominent and close friends with Henry Clay.

Lincoln was the first Republican president, and his burial place in Springfield, IL, is visited by politicians every year. In fact, for generations, Republican candidates have rubbed the huge nose of the statue of Lincoln there for good luck! In this latest election, then-Senator Barak Obama chose Lincoln's burial place to announce his candidacy for the presidency. That's proof of how Lincoln has become a symbol of the best of America!

I would like you to do some research of your own on the life, speeches, and impact of President Lincoln. This is a good starting point, but you may use other references as well (remember to cite!).

Here's your question: Shakespeare wrote in his play Twelfth Night "Be not afraid of greatness: some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them." Most would agree that Lincoln falls into the category being a "great" leader. In your opinion, what was great about Lincoln? Share your findings in a 200 word essay, and be sure to post at least two replies concerning the essays of your classmates (150 word total).

  3. “The time comes upon every public man when it is best for him to keep his lips closed.” I looked at many “witty” quotes that Abraham Lincoln said and most of them all related to this one above. Lincoln, as everyone knows, was a man of honesty, “Honest Abe.” That is one good quality about him but not only was he honest he was smart and he cared about his country that he was serving as president. To me, what was great about Abraham Lincoln was him coming from a poor background to becoming the President. He should inspire all of us. When we feel like we can’t do much of anything if he did it we can to. Abe Lincoln was a very successful man he became a lawyer and debated and shared his opinions about slavery and became President and also, as most of us know, he played a HUGE role in the Civil War. To conclude, Abraham Lincoln might make us dream a lot and say “I wish I wish” but we can.

  4. For my essay I chose to write on Lincoln’s assassination. Lincoln was one of our greatest presidents; he was a very wise and knowledgeable man before his life was tragically ended. It all started on April 14th, 1865 as he was attending an evening comedy “Our American Cousin” suddenly Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed in an instant. With him was his wife Mary Todd Lincoln and a 28 year old police officer Henry R. Rathbone and his fiancĂ© and her name was Clara Harris. The killer, was John Wilkes Booth; booth had slipped through the doors of the (in today’s terms) “cinema” and pointed a gun to Abe Lincolns head and shot through his left ear and through his right eye. Though the doctors had tried to help the matter there was nothing they could do to help the severely injured president. As Abraham Lincoln would say” I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong.”

  5. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. He was elected in 1861. Befor he was elected he did give many speeches. He was very well knows by the time he became president. He soon found love with Mary who soon became his wife. They had four children but only one survived. As a president he was very involved, he was known as "the father of big government" in the united states. He was a very good president although some people would disagree because the dept of our naton raised while he was in office. But we have to keep in mind that there was a war going on while he was in office, and wars do cost money for supplies and just taking care of all that needs to be done. So all in all he was a great president and still got us very far. Abraham Lincoln was assasinated in 1865. Not only was he assasinated but he was the first United States president to be assasinated. All in all Abraham Lincoln was a very good president and was a very very brave and strong man for dealing with everything that he has been through. Not to mention running the United States Of America

Abraham Lincoln was a smart man for sure his intelligence was beyond that of every normal man, any man that says something like this must be pretty smart :)But Lincoln gave many contributions to us that sometimes may be over looked. For instance Lincoln was the first to really ever step up and defend the slaves he spent a large majority of his presidency on the issue. Lincoln was a gate way for people like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. that is only thing that people all around the world can be thankful for. Lincoln said once "Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other." he was definitely one to practice what he preached because Lincoln attended a few schools but the length of time only added up to a little over a year all together. He had it set in his head and in his heart to succeed and clearly he did just that. Abraham Lincoln left behind one heck of an impressive legacy and his he will not only be remembered for his presidency but also for the life he lived as a man.

    I really enjoyed your essay although I found it very sad that only three of Lincoln's children survived... after putting in so much work to have a family it would be an extreme disappointment to be let down like that. But I suppose all things happen for a greater purpose.

  9. For my essay, I chose to write about the White House while Linoln was in it. Back then, the White House was not very nice. Lincoln never really liked it either, but it was better than any other house he had ever lived in. Lincoln came into office at the hardest time he possibly could have. He had to deal with succession, the war, and trying to free slaves. The war also had a great impression on his health. One of his secretaries found him in the library one day and Lincoln said that he had to die sometime. His health was clearly going down.

For my essay on Lincoln I chose to write on Lincoln’s famous document the Emancipation Proclamation.”Almost from the beginning of his ministration, Lincoln was pressured by abolitionists and radical Republicans to issue an Emancipation Proclamation.” Lincoln definitely agreed, but wanted to wait until he knew he had more support. His original draft of the Emancipation Proclamation was called the “Preliminary Proclamation.” He first read to secretaries William H. Seward and Gideon Wells on July 13, 1862. Both of the men were speechless, but they worried about anarchy rising in the South; Lincoln dropped the matter. But, nine days later, Lincoln brought the issue up at a cabinet meeting, but the reactions were mixed. After a while, the cabinet decided to go with it. On January 1, 1862, the Emancipation Proclamation’s final draft was completed, and it was known as the crowning achievement of his administration. Unfortunately, the original copy was burned in the Chicago fire of 1871.
    For the second part if the question, I believe what made Lincoln such a great leader was his ability to communicate goals and vision for America. Hs quote,” with malice toward none, charity for all let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations,” it shows how he wanted to rebuild America into a strong country and move on and learn from our mistakes. I think that is what makes a good leader: to learn from mistakes, move on and rebuild, but never forget.

  12. Good things Abraham Lincoln did
    I think it is very interesting, that Abraham Lincoln built the Republican Party. He has a great influence on the governments decisions, because his party and his ideas are still are still an issue today. I also think it is fun, that Obama said he would candidate for President in front of a Lincoln statue, since he is a Democrat. This shows me how important this man was, for all Americans. What is also fun to mention is, that Republican candidates used to kiss the nose of the Lincoln statue for good luck in their elections. I also think that it makes him a good man and president that he tried to let the south join the Union without any loose of right for its people. I think this is a great act of grace. I am sure many Northern people were against such an easy reunion. They lost a lot of lives and other things and wanted the South to be punished, but he saw also all the benefits a strong South can bring. I think it is very bad, that this good chance of an easy reunion died with Abraham Lincoln at April 14 1865.

Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents we have ever had.  Abraham Lincoln was great because he lived what he preached.  Many of our presidents today say that they are against abortions, high taxes, gay marriages, and etc., but as soon as they are elected into office they don't do anything about it instead they end up allowing all the things they said they were against happen.  Abraham Lincoln spoke out against the separation of the United States, slavery, and etc., and he fought against it and gave up his life for it because he believed that it was immoral.  Abraham Lincoln wasn't always thought of as impressive though....  When he was a boy Abraham Lincoln was the son of a farmer.  Luckily, Kentucky can proudly claim to be his birth place.  Abraham was not at all successful in his business life either, but somehow these made Lincoln a great leader.  Lincoln was elected president in 1860 and was elected again in 1865, but he was sadly assassinated shortly after.  Abraham Lincoln serves as an inspiration for us today because he started out small, but he went out with a bang.

  14. Abraham Lincoln is a man who overcame all odds to be one of our greatest presidents and the man who saved the union. He was born in a small cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky and move to Indiana as a young boy. He later moved to Illinois to start a career as a lawyer. He ran for several offices, but lost them all, until he finally became a state legislator for Illinois. He tried for the federal congress many times but couldn’t win. He later joined a small party called the Republicans, their main goal: end slavery. Against all odds, Lincoln won the election and became President of the United States of America.
    Lincoln really picked a bad time to be president. When he assumed office the Civil War had already started and he was given the task of keeping the Union Together. He led the US during the war very humbly and graciously. He also hated slavery very much and wanted to set the slaves free.
    He was also known for his sense of humor and was known for saying things like, “If I where two-faced would I be wearing this one.” He would easily laugh off all kinds of stuff.

  15. Abraham Lincoln was a great leader and very intelligent. Many loved him for his great deeds and friendly humor. There are many famous quotes from Abraham that we hear every day. There are many reasons why he was a great leader. One was that he was open to hear other people’s ideas, and did not argue with them. He worked great with his Cabinet this way, because they were not afraid to discuss their ideas. After they discussed, he would make a decision that benefited everybody. He was also great at realizing his own weaknesses and controls his emotions. If somebody pointed out a weakness he would quickly start to work on it. He didn’t express his emotions to a person if it was anger or disappointment. He would write a “Hot letter” but would not send it to them. If he got frustrated he would send a letter saying he was not going to hold a grudge. In the Emancipation Proclamation Abraham signed against slavery, which was a great change for many. These are just a few reasons why he was great, but there are many more.

    I loved reading your essay it was very interesting and true. It is very funny how today most politicians, or for that matter everybody, don’t live by what they preach. I admire Abraham Lincoln because he remained “honest Abe.” Abraham Lincoln was also very admirable, like you said, because he of his perseverance. He grew up a farmer’s son, had multiple business failures, and even had trouble in the political field before becoming president. Anyway, Great essay! :)

Lincoln was a very strong man, even on his deathbed. As for the man that killed him, I don’t know how he slept at night knowing that he killed a U.S. president.

  19. Before I came to America, I didn’t like history; so I only knew four presidents of America. Washington, Lincoln, Bush, and Obama. Lincoln was one of them. Since I had the chance to go to the Birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, I know him a lot of better than before. He was a great president. That’s why people remember him forever.

    He was the 16th president of the United State. He was president in 1860 and re-election in 1864. He grew up in a pool family; he only had two years school. He was middle class. The school he went to does not have books, so they remembered it by saying out loud. He practiced writing in the trees; use the branches to write on the soil. He liked to tell stories to his friends; he was a good storyteller, so did his dad. He heard stories from his dad and then organized the language to tell his friends, to make they could understand. He was a nice person, even when he was little.

    He was a great president. As a president, he built the Republican Party into a strong national organization. And he never let the world forget that the Civil War involved an even larger issue. Even more, the words he said about slavery, I would never forget. He said: “ If the slavery is not wrong, then nothing is wrong.” He kept a peace between North and South states. He was a wonderful president. That’s why we’ll remember him forever.

    Great essay. Yes, he was a great leader. He saw the bad things early, and said out loud to let people realize; and correct it; even it was so hard. He against slavery, so he told everybody how bad it was to let people change and to help people. He was so brave and strong. Good Job.

    I being a Christian the most important quality Abraham Lincoln had was that of honesty. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. Abe was the second son to Thomas and Nancy Lincoln in a single-roomed log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. In 1818, Lincoln was just nine years old, his mother died of milk sickness and his older sister, Sarah, took the responsibility of taking care of Abe. His father would then remarry to another lady that was a mother to three children already. Abe would become close to his step mother, even calling her mother as a preteen.
    Abe’s life was not an easy life the first woman he was engaged to, died during due to typhoid fever. I belie this hard life is what shaped him to be the kind of man and politician our sixteenth president was; A man of honor, honesty, and above all a genuine love for God and his country, the United States of America. Before becoming President of the United States he met a girl, Mary Todd, this girl would be the one he actually did marry, but after both of them broke off their first engagement on January 1, of 1841. Abraham Lincoln, “Honest Abe,” was and is a prime example what citizens of the United States and their politicians should strive to be today, genuine loving, honorable, and honest people … people of God!

  23. Megan I really liked your essay. It is very true that he was a very good project. I also think that he had a very good presidency. Although he did go into debt, we were still in war so that caused a major part in that, overall, good job!!
    Christian, I thought your essay was very informative and very well thought out. I love how you started off with the positive side of Lincoln and how you expressed your opinion and yes I agree it was aweful that he was shot.
    Lydia, I love loved loved yours. I totally agree on what you said how he lived what he preached. I wish more people and presidents would do that but many of them, unfortunately, don’t which is very very sad. I truly wish that we will have another great president like Lincoln and I agree he was one of the best presidents!! Great Job!
