As World War II ended and Americans readjusted to peace, the five years following the war (1945-1950) were among the most significant in our nation's history. Consider some interesting facts by carefully reading the paragraphs below. When you have carefully read the information provided choose two of the questions to respond to in your homework essay. (It's amazing to consider that all these things were happening in one five year span!).
The GI bill sent former soldiers to college, and for the first time in history higher education and the better jobs that it leads to was open middle class and poor Americans (white, for the most part, but this would soon change). Can you pause for a moment and consider how important this has been in making the US the country it is today?
The Nuremburg and Japan trials were conducted and for the first time in world history nations united together to demand justice. Former Nazi and Japanese officials were given legitimate, fair trials and either acquitted or sentenced based on the evidence. The accused criminals had lawyers and access to evidence. The trials were public and the newspapers of the world reported the daily proceedings. Why was it important that these trials (and the executions that followed) were done in such a manner?
The US instituted the Marshall Plan. It might sound normal by today's standards, but at the time it was an extreme departure from anything we'd ever done: US taxpayer dollars were used to help rebuild Europe! Not just charity projects like food and clothing, but we actually paid for the rebuilding of infrastructure so the European economies would survive and get back on track. Considering the fact that the US spent $10 billion a month in Iraq for more than seven years, that idea might not surprise you, but you can imagine that it was a novel idea back then, especially considering how strictly tax dollars were spent in the early days of our country. At the same time the US was completely redesigning the Japanese economy, education system, and military. Is there a justifiable reason to spend your money for the benefit of other countries? Does the US eventually get enough benefit from the investment to justify the cost?
After almost 2,000 years, the nation of Israel was reborn. Jews who had lost everything in Europe were unlikely to return to their home countries, and the Zionist movement was born. Hundreds of thousands of American Jews emigrated to Palestine, and in 1948 Israeli independence was declared. Of all the nations on earth, the US has had no closer relations than our relationship with Israel over the last 60 years. Today the nation of Israel, which is surrounded by enemies and has a large Muslim minority, continues to struggle against regular attacks but still has a vibrant economy and fully functioning society. Do you think the US should continue to be so involved in Israel, and do you think that it is possible to see a peaceful solution to the conflict?
The Iron Curtain descended over eastern Europe and the Cold War began. After the Soviets pushed the Nazi army back into Germany, the Communists never relinquished control over eastern Europe, including East Germany. Freedom and democracy were replaced with harsh dictatorships that lasted for decades - most until the end of the 1980s. For many years more than a million American and Soviet troops stared at each other from just a few yards apart across the East/West border of Germany: an extremely explosive situation that could have erupted into war at any time. (I was a high school student when the Berlin Wall came down and the eastern European countries overthrew the communist dictator governments - what an exciting time to be watching the world events!). How do you think America has changed since the end of the Cold War?
The United Nations was created and a new era of cooperation began. Along with the UN, new organizations such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank emerged so that large nations such as the US could assist poor countries in developing their economies and improve the lives of their citizens (through immunization efforts, for example). Today there is much controversy as to the efficacy of such programs. Is this unhappiness the result of the fact that the problems of the world are just too large and complex to solve, or do you think that these programs are probably effective but our access to news and information just highlights the continued suffering of those in other countries?
The requirements for this assignment are exactly as the one that preceded it - don't forget your comments. God bless!
Lydia has been emailing her assignments because she's had trouble posting on this website. I'd like to pass along her essay and comments from last week - good stuff!
ReplyDeleteHitler Comes To Power:
Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany after World War I (“The Great War”) because of the Great Depression (October 21, 1921). Nazism had not always been popular, but the depression made the Germans (especially the middle class) desperate. Adolf Hitler (like many politicians today) was a great speaker which aided him in winning over the Germanic people. It all started on June 28, 1919, Treaty of Versailles when so many restraints were put on Germany. Hitler’s Nazism was so quickly excepted because so many Germans were without jobs and without hope. In Hitler’s “reign” he stayed popular because Germany’s economic times improved even though he did terrible things. On November 6, 1932 Nazi lost its grasp on Germany because Germany went in a conservative direction. This topic needs to be discussed more often because so many people think Adolf Hitler was a dictator (which he became later) but he actually gained his office legally. Still today people believe that Adolf Hitler was a great leader and maybe he was in his own respects, but if they have that opinion they mustn't know how awful this man was. I have enjoyed researching this topic hope you enjoyed reading about it.

The Nuremberg and Japan trials:
ReplyDeleteIt was important that the Nuremberg and Japan trials were fair for everybody and public so that the people actually have been able to see and hear what's wrong and right. Many people at that time were probably still used to the laws of Hitler's Third Reich and if the governments would have handled the trials secretly the people wouldn't have got to know the right way of treating other people for a long time.
The Marshall plan:
The Marshall plan was a program of financial aid and other initiatives, sponsored by the US and designed to boost the economies of western European countries after World War II. I think countries sometimes give aid to each other because they don't want to see the country get crashed which could lead to much worse things such as depressions, war or bad leadership. The election of Adolf Hitler and Nazism is the best example for that: Instead of building a nice, friendly Germany after the first world war Germany got crushed, went through a bad inflation, low job rate and many depressions which basically lead to the thinking of Hitler and many others. This is also why the US eventually got benefit from spending so much money: Who can tell that all these things wouldn't have happened all over a next time? Another world war would just be miserably bad and unwanted. In addition to that the economy of the European countries got better so that they were able buy and import stuff from the US which lifted up the US' economy too. So yes, I think there eventually was a benefit for the US to spend so much money.
You did a great job on your essay! It was full of facts and a breeze to read.

The GI Bill:
ReplyDeleteThe GI Bill or the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act provided many benefits to World War II veterans. These benefits included low-cost mortgages, loans to start a business or farm, cash payments of tuition and living expenses to attend college, high school or vocational education, as well as one year of unemployment compensation. This bill aimed at supporting war veterans until they adjusted to civilian life. Bills similar to this were used during the Korean War and the war in Vietnam. Many of these bills provided jobs to veterans and their families. This stimulated the economy after the war and provided jobs to many white middle class citizens.
New Organizations:
The United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank are some of the organizations that came about at the end of World War II. The United Nations is an organization of many countries designed to solve international issues without war. The headquarters for the United Nations is located in New York City, New York. The International Monetary Fund is an international organization designed to stabilize exchange rates and assist the reconstruction of the world’s international payment system. The World Bank is an international financial institution that provides loans to developing countries for capital programs.
I enjoyed your essay. I could tell you put a lot of hard work into it and some good research. Good job.
DeleteGreat job! One of the best things in reading your essays is when I learn something new. As always great job.

This topic is difficult to argue. I believe America needs to be involved with other countries to an extent, but I also believe the world’s issues are just to large in size and to complex to solve. America certainly needs to be involved with other counties because we need to make as many allies as we can and not make enemies. The shady part of this topic is definitely how involved does America need to get? America should not think we can solve the world’s problems because we can’t; our country has way too many issues within itself. Also, if America spends all its money on relations with other countries (like $10 billion a month in Iraq!) America will suffer from extreme debt. I do not believe that we will see peace in Israel because the feuding has been going on for way too long a time, but I do believe America should continue to be involved with Israel and maintain a friendship. It’s important in America that we have equality of rights; such as in trials. Since the Cold War, America has undoubtedly changed. We have become more socialistic (liberal), more cautious, and more involved with the relations of other countries.
ReplyDeleteThe Marshall Plan:
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion the Marshall Plan helped the European economies to recover a lot. I think this was a good move, because everybody around the world is benefiting from strong economies. Like you see in the current crisis a week trade partner damages the economy of other countries too. The plan also helped the US to built a good relationship with the countries, so they had a strong Europe as an opponent to the Soviet Union on their side.
The United Nations :
I believe that the United Nations are a effective institution. I believe that the United Nation helps to solve problems around the world. It helps there where there are no other aid organizations, because even their intentions might be good, they move on when the media attention moves to the next crisis. They depend on sponsors for their existents. Unlike the UN, who always can use their funds where they are really important. The problems the UN experiences at the moment are a sign of bad rules and regulations for me. When you give certain counties the chance to out rule the majority then you should not wonder when they use it, if it is in their own best interest.
Good job on your essay, I really enjoyed reading it. I like how you are not afraid to speak for your opinions.
DeleteCongrats on the essay! I liked that it was based on your opinions and on facts too.

Israel
ReplyDeleteIn 1949 Israel was made a free state for the Jews by the United Nations. Ever since then the U.S has been the strongest ally Israel has ever had. Now the question is, “should we still offer support for Israel?” I think the answer should be “yes” for several different reasons.
1) Israel is a very prosperous nation. They have no doubt been blessed and it is good for both the U.S. economy and the Israeli economy if the two nations help to support each other.
2) Most of Israel’s enemies our also our enemies. There are many Middle-eastern nations and Terrorist groups like Iran, Al-quid a, and Hezbollah who hate the United States almost as much as they hate the nation of Israel. It is good for both nations to pull their defenses together protect each other.
3) Most importantly, on the spiritual side, in the Bible, in the book of Genesis, God Promises to bless those who bless the nation of Israel and curse those who curse it. I don’t think that as a nation we would want to miss out on a blessing from God, and I know we do not want our nation to be cursed.
The GI bill
This bill let soldiers go to college for cheaper rates. I think that this bill is very important to U.S history because it allowed poor and middle class to attend college. This means that the best jobs could be open to a broader range of people despite their background because of they had a good education.
I loved your essay this week! I thought it was very well thought out and it expressed your opinions well.

I'm going to talk about the Israel reborn. It is amazing how after 2000 years of slavery and not freedom, they finally found liberty and happiness (kind of). And that all the jews that could succeed in other countries could go back "home" if they wanted to and do their business in there. I think the US shouldn't be that involved in Israel, but still a really good country to make business and treaties with, since alot of inmigrants jews were involved in the US's politics, science, culture, business etc...
ReplyDeleteFor my second topic I'd like to talk about the trials to the Nazis and the Japanese people. It was really good to have those trials so they could pay for what what they have done. Also the world can see what was happening to all those Nazis and japanese that were bad, they could notice what was happening around the world and it wasn't like some people made it up, they actually knew what was happening. It was really important for the humanity all the technological advances and thanks to them people in those times knew what was happening just by turning on the radio.
Daniel Gonzalez
Good job Daniel! I really like the topics you talked about and I understand how amazing the rise of Israel finally after 2000 years of slavery is. I agree with you opinion that the US should make business with Isreal too but not be that involved. Great essay!
DeleteDaniel,
Deletethe topic you chose about Israel is so interesting! Like you said it is amazing and also a little scared to me that it was been with slavery for that long. It is so sad:( For the second topic you chose, seriously, it is worse than you thought, it is worse than everybody who didn't been through think, it was horrible!!! I'm mad and sad about it but I can't do anything, can't change anything, it already happened:'(
Marshall Plan:
ReplyDeleteEurope was in great need of supplies and reconstruction after WWII. Factories were destroyed to the point where Europe was entering a terrible famine. Since America did not have as much damage as Europe, America decided to provide help in many ways. This could help build relationships between countries. Benefits like military help or natural resources might be a good reason to use our money on others. Then again, America is in a huge debt and keeps getting worse. Even with the benefits, it usually doesn’t seem we are getting back enough to benefit both.
G.I. Bill
The G.I. Bill or the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act provided benefits for WWII vets. The G.I. Bill gave many benefits to vets. Cash payments of tuition and living expenses to attend college, loans to start a business, and low-cost mortgages were some of the benefits. This helped out vets who were returning to be able to get the education that didn’t get before. Using these benefits they could get a start to owning or working at a permanent job. They could “pick back up” from before the war and continue with their lives. This has changed many people’s lives, because now people who could not afford college could suddenly get the help and money they needed.
Great job! You had great facts and great opinions.

For some reason now I can put it:
ReplyDeleteThe Cold war:
The Cold War was a powerful war that went from the 1945 to the 1991. It was a cause by continuing state of military and politics tensions between the Western and the Easter Europe. The Western was lead by the United States of America (and the NATO) and the Eastern Europe (called communist part too) was lead by the Soviet Union. This began after the momentary winning after Nazi Germany. In that period the most powerful region are USSR and US but they have a lot of political and economic differences. The Soviet Union (USSR) made a Eastern Bloc with the states that it occupated and maintaining these as satellite states.
In these period with have a lot of war and America in around them. He surely affect people's thoughts. People maybe were angry against the people that were in the state that were against. The Eastern and Western Part were really against each other. The situation was really bad in Berlin. Berlin was divided in two part and in between the two there were the Wall (now we can see just a part). In between this wall there a a space that it wasn't for nobody the parts. No one that was past of the West part couldn't pass (even in the air) the Eastern part. It was a bad situation for that period. After that the Wall fell down and the Cold War was over the things were better. American policymakers, including Kennan and John Foster Dulles, acknowledged that the Cold War was in its essence a war of ideas. The United States, acting through the CIA, funded a long list of projects to counter the Communist appeal among intellectuals in Europe and the developing world.
Isdrael:
The problem in Isdrael in really bad. People are fighting for one piece of land. I think that if America will leave the war, people in Isdael will be massacrate for sure. America is sending a lot of people there and without them, they will soffers a lot.
Thank you,
-Marta
(Sorry Mr. Akers for the confusion!)
Well done, Marta! I think the cold war is so interesting! I mean: How does somebody get the idea to just divide Germany with a wall that goes straight through the capital Berlin? Those times were very hard for Germans. The brother of my great grandmother lived at the eastern part of Berlin. They didn't see each other until after the wall broke down, I think. Everybody who tried to escape was killed. I've been to a museum in Berlin about the wall. It was really shocking. Oh my goodness, I keep talking... Anyways, good job!
DeleteGreat job on your essay! It was ful of good info.
DeleteTill next week,
Lydia
Marta,
Deleteyou did a great job! I learned so much from your essay, the cold war is so interesting!!! It is something that I've never heard of. Good Job!! And you talked about it's relationship with United States, I learned a lot from it. Great job!!!

ReplyDeleteCold War.
ReplyDeleteCold War’s means don’t have any physical wars. Cold War was basically war of democracy and communism (America and Soviet Union and maybe China too??) they didn’t have any war during Cold War but they did boundary each other in economic sight, army sight and other lots of other stuff. That’s why we call that time cold war. They really didn’t have any single wars but they fought in other countries war for helping Korea and Vietnam. And then Cold War made Korea and Germany divided countries.
Israel
Israel and America are really friendly because lots of Jews are having power in America. In my opinion, if America doesn’t have any Jews right not (all of Jews are move to other country) America’s going to have hard time. Israel is helping America and America is protecting Israel.
For this week homework, the first topic I want to talk about is the Israel 2000 years’ slavery. I don’t think US should keep involving in much, it can be some to keep the peace, but too much will mess it up. The world is unfair, and we all have different religions and different thoughts and opinions, and you can say this is wrong and that is right because you can’t prove and control everything. For me, everything that happened must have a reason for why it happened, it is happening for something, and if we against it too much, we will mess it up. So as long as it doesn’t ruin everything then it will be fine. Even though, you can’t do much about it and you might make it worse. The world never be totally peace, and most of the time we are fighting and having war, so what we can do is just try to keep the overall peace as long as possible.
ReplyDeleteFor the second one, I chose Japan trials. As a Chinese, I definitely don’t like Japan, you can say it is the history, the scar that they made and left on us, but more importantly, is that how can human do something that are so not human to do to themselves!!! It was definitely important for US to do it because you can’t just let them do what ever they want it to be. So it was very important to do.
This essay from me is kind of personal, it is just the idea and opinion from myself, so if anyone disagree or has different ideas and opinions, don’t be mad or mean or anything, it just the thoughts from myself.
my opinion is a question with many different answers and many of them depending on the degree in which we answer them. I think it is good for America to build relations with other countries, nut I also think we have a problem of getting too involved with other countries own problems that we have no business getting into. I think just recently the United States in the middle east during the uprisings was a good thing though we could have been using that money for stuff dealing with your country, I mean we are like thirteen trillion dollars in debt! But if we totally withdrew from all the other countries it would be devastating to our country not only relationally but also economically. Without foreign imports we wouldn’t be able to support the economy we do because we barely do now and imports are a HUGE part of economy today. So I guess the main point I’m trying to get across is that though the United States is such a huge country in foreign affairs I think it easy for Americans to get a superman complex, like we can fix anything and at any price. But then we seem to forget one thing, superman has a weakness… kryptonite, and America’s Kryptonite may be us getting into some many countries business to the extent that we no longer have the money to keep our own country together.
ReplyDelete@ Lydia
ReplyDeleteYou wrote a good essay. You said a lot of interesting stuff. I agree with you on the issue that one country alone can not solve all the problems of the world on its own, but I believe that a large alliance like the UN can contribute to the betterment of humanity a lot. But I disagree with you on the Israel conflict. I believe that there might be peace in the future. I doesn’t seem like it now, but circumstances can change, like during the cold war. If they manage not to blow each other into oblivion, I think that they could solve the problem.
@ Catelyn
Dear Catelyn, I think you did a very good job with your essay, It has a lot of interesting information in it. I agree with you, that the GI bill is a great help to the soldiers and their families. Good job!
