  1. Historic Events:
Some historic events of the 1960’s include the Civil Rights Movement, Engel v. Vitale, birth control pills, Cuban Missile Crisis, and Woodstock. The Civil Rights Movement was organized to gain more social and political freedoms for African Americans. One of the key leaders in this movement was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In court case Engel v. Vitale, the act of praying in school was declared unconstitutional. Birth control pills became widely available to women across the country around 1960. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a thirteen day confrontation between Cuba and Russia on one side and the United States on the other. It was caused by Russia’s building of nuclear warheads in Cuba during the Cold War. Woodstock was the high point of the hippie movement. It was a large concert held in the middle of a field near Woodstock, New York and was attended by nearly 400,000 people.

    Television and Film:
Of the many shows of the sixties, some of the more memorable were The Flintstones, Alvin & the Chipmunks, the Jetsons, The Addams Family, Star Trek, and The Beverly Hillbillies. These shows were very popular with children and adults alike. The Flintstones was the second prime cartoon; the first was Rocky and his Friends which came out in 1959. Some movies which came out in the 1960’s were The Sound of Music, 101 Dalmatians, Pinocchio, and the James Bond movies. Due to the drastic culture shift, a new film code was devised with more leniencies towards sex, violence, and language.

    Education:
Many changes in education occurred in the 1960’s including busing, phonics, and protests of college campuses. Due to the court case Brown v. Board of Education, segregation in schools was no longer allowed and provided for mandatory busing of black and white students to schools. Phonics and other basic study tools were brought back into elementary classrooms to fix educational issues that became evident in the 1950’s. Protests on college campuses also became very popular. This was caused by students who were of drafting age not being able to vote. This issue became more evident as the United States became more involved in the Vietnam War.
