Homework 1, Due Aug 17, 2012

Good job last week on our "warm-up exercise." This week's history assignment provides another opportunity for us to learn the process that we will employ throughout the school year. This week's question should take us a little more in-depth: If you could choose to visit any culture in history, which would it be? Why are you especially interested in that time period and culture? Visit www.worldbookonline.com and log in (your ID is "scs"; the passwork is "cougars") and find an article about your chosen culture. Report back on your findings, and be sure to cite the article correctly in your essay.

Remember, your essay must be at least 250 words in length (which isn't very long, after all) and you must read the essays of others and respond to at least two of them (a total of 150 words in response). See me before or after school if you need help setting up a Google ID to leave comments on the blog!

  1. If I could choose any time period in history to visit it would be feudal Japan during the Edo period (1603–1868), which is also known as the Tokugawa period . I choose this time period because it is a very recognized time period in Japan because of all of the positive that happened during this time. For instance, this 265 year time span was a time of peace and it was much like the United Stated in their set up of government. They had a judicial system, a way to tax fairly and also watched over government spending, we would call this a budget. However it was also a difficult time for the Japanese people because they did not have the freedoms that we have, especially religious freedom. They were repressed in their Christian beliefs, because their shogun did not have the same beliefs, and as a result, many of the immigrants living there were sent away and those that could stay had to live in a certain part of the country and were only allowed to stay because of their work.
One of the things I think is most interesting is their entertainment. During the Tokugawa period they would entertain using ukiyio-e, which is a style of Japanese art puppetry called bunraku , they did this in a place called the entertainment district, in Japanese it is called ukiyo. I think this is interesting because they would entertain the samurai and the business people, with their art and music and make a living doing it and it was enjoyable to a lot of people.

    1. I really liked your essay, it was really interesting and had a lot of things I didn't know. I didn't know they had a government system like ours or that they used pupets as a form of entertainment.

    2. Your essay was very enjoyable. I never knew, Like Allisha said, that their government was set up like ours. Also I didn't know that some of the people had to live in like a certain part of the country just because of their religious belief.

  2. If i could chose any culture in history it would be the Chinese because ive always been interested in all the dragon stuff and fire works. the event that envoles all of this is the chinese new year, this is the most important holiday.it used to be marked by the moon cycles. used to new years in china is a month long event and it marked the end of a farming season and the start of a new one but now days it only lasts a few days. and dosent really represent much Anymore. another thing that interests me in chinese culture is the kinds of food they eat grains such as rice, wheat, corn Etc. veggies are ranked second in the chinese diet. and their favorite meats are pork and poultry. other random foods the chinese eat are eggs, fish, fruit, and shellfish.and just like us fast food has been bumpin in china. and to drink with this the favorite is tea but soda and beer have now become popular in china.

  4. If I could go back in time to any point in history I would choose the Victorian Era. It was a time of peace and prosperity for England and I find the culture beautiful. Their social structure fascinates me as well. The fact that who your great great great grandparents knew affected who you could be and where you could go a century and a half later is an astounding concept to me. It didnt matter how much money you made, if you were "working class" or "middle class" you would always be in that class.
One of the most interestinf aspects of the era to me though is the treatment and expectations of the women and the completely different standards for men and women. Women were expected to be delicate, seen and not heard. Woman were more prone to illness because they were left to attend their family members if they were sick and the germs stayed in the stale air of the homes. It was considered manly to have a healthy appetite, do manual labor, exercise, and spend a lot of time outdoors. Women didn’t eat a lot, hardly ever got good exercise, and spent a lot of time indoors. In this time period men for the most part were able to do as they pleased while women were secluded to the home.
They were also a very religious era and I love that it was acceptable, even expected for someone to believe in God. Most Of the people had a faith that is now rare and taken for granted. People almost always attended church on Sundays and it would be nice to see everyone in the town in church on Sundays.

    1. I agree England's culture is a very beautiful thing. I had no idea that your great great great grandparents could have that affect on your life either. Those poor women that had to live back then! I agree it would be nice to see everybody in town to attend church on Sundays :)

  6. This week’s assignment was a bit difficult for me. Each time period and culture in history has in some way influenced our society into what it is presently. With that being said, however, I would go to ancient Greece. I chose this culture because a lot of important things happened in this nation that affects us today. One of my favorite parts of ancient Greece was their contribution to the arts. The Greeks had an amazing knack for architecture and literature. Although I do not believe in their polytheistic views, the sculptures and monuments/temples they made for their “gods” were incredible. The Greeks also used different types of columns to adorn such structures-the Doric style (ex. The famous Parthenon), the Ionic style (ex. the temple of Artemis), and the Corinthian style (ex. The temple of Zeus). Again, back to literature, as the juniors know, the ancient Greeks were known for their very interesting tragedies and somewhat historical dramas. The Greeks, as Mrs. VanHoose mentioned last year, were very good at conveying human nature and addressing some of the importances of their culture. For example, in Sophocles’ Antigone, a main conflict was the burial of the dead. Aside from their contribution to the arts, however, the Greeks were a key element in the use of the democratic system. In conclusion, the Greeks have contributes a lot to the modern world. This being said, the ancient Greeks also were a very pagan society. With their beliefs lying in a plethora of gods/goddesses, it is no wonder why ancient Greece did not thrive, even though they were seemingly intelligent and organized. Thank you!

  7. This assignment was kind of hard for me as well, because I have never thought about going back in time to think through how the culture might have been for the people before us. But I decided that if I could go back I would go to ancient Egypt. Why, you may ask? Well, because they were one of the first real civilizations in history. They also created so many things, like the 365 day calendar, the first real government, basic forms of math, and papyrus, among other things. The ancient Egyptians influenced our culture in almost every way you can think of. They shaped part of our culture that we live in today. Egyptians helped form everything from hieroglyphics to the structure of our buildings today. Nobody did the pyramids quite as well as them. The pyramids in the western hemisphere are similar, but not so great as the Egyptian ones. They were very influential on our life as we know it today, even being mentioned in the Bible, but not influencing the way we practice our faith, Christianity. The Egyptians worshiped many Gods, but are recorded as one of the first groups that became monotheist and worshiped a god called Akhenaton. The Egyptians also were very worried about what happened when they died. That is why they buried the dead with treasure, so they could pay their way to through the afterlife. So in my closing the ancient Egyptians really helped influence the country and culture we hare today, in some ways.

  8. If I could choose any culture in history It would be the Chinese culture during the Qin Dynasty (221 B.C. to 206 B.C.) The name "China" came from this dynasty. Most dynasties in China last for hundreds of years, but this one only lasted fifteen. It was ruled by emperor Qin. He was China's first emperor. He burned many books to try so that people wouldn't know much about the past. Not many people rebelled against the law while he was in power because they knew he could immediately put them to death. He had absolute control of all people and had harsh punishments. Emperor Qin was a Legalist this is a philosophy that emphasizes the need for order above all other human concerns. No one dared to commit a crime under his rule.

To keep order and control, he developed a system of bureaucracy. He divided his empire into 36 provinces and each province into districts. He put two government officials in charge of each province.

This dynasty is also the beginning of building The Great Wall of China. He wanted China to be the most powerful nation in the world. It took over 300,000 peasants that were forced to help with this massive project. The wall was also built to prevent attacks.
The reason i would want to live in this awful time, is to help organize a rebellion!
Qin dyed and his son took over. The people rebelled, and he was taken over by the Han dynasty in 209 B.C. Life improved durning is dynasty. Thanks!

  9. I chose to write about the Roaring Twenties. It was in the 1920’s and was full of dramatic social and political changes. For the very first time more Americans lived in cities rather than on farms. The nations total wealth more than doubled in the years between 1920 and 1929! This growth in economy pulled Americans into an unfamiliar “Consumer Society” People from coast to coast also bought the same things as others did thanks to nationwide stores. They listened to the same music and also danced the same. Most Americans were uncomfortable with this huge change in urban or in other words “racy” culture. This time period brought more conflict than celebration, however for small handfuls of younger people the “Roaring Twenties” were most definitely roaring! During that time many people had extra money to spend and they spent it on consumer goods. They bought appliances, electric refrigerators, and radios! And by the end of the 1920’s there were radios in over 12 million homes. Three years later there were more than 500 channels on the radio to chose from. People also started going to movie theatres . More than 3 quarters of the United States visited the movie theatres every week!

  10. If I could choose any time period in history to visit it would be Heiann period(794~1185) of Japan.Because in this period,Japan was able to move away from its reliance on imitating and assimilating Tan culture and proceed to forge a culture hat incorporated a distinct Japanese sprit and sensitivity in the culuture sphere. And Japanese literature also developed with hiragana and katakana. For example, the Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu and Makura no Soshi by Seishonagon.
This period is famous of Tanka. It's a type of short poem with lines of five, seven, five, seven and seven syllables, unique to Japan. When people declared own love for someone, they used Tanka as a love letter.I think it's very romantic.

I'm interested in Ceremonial dress (Jyunititoe) because it is very beautiful and traditional. It layered ceremonial kimono is worn twenty layers of the women in the Heian court. And currently, Jyunihitoe is worn by the wife of the imperial family wedding.

Aristocrats under the emperor held actual power and controlled the government. And there was a tremendous gap between the rich and the poor.
So this period was not good except the aristocrats.
But there are no big rebellion and war.
So I chose the Heian period.Thank you.Sakiho Fujimoto

  11. If I could go back to any time period I would go to Ancient Egypt. Egypt arose around 5,000 years ago and was one of the world’s first civilizations. They used the Nile River for transportation and the dark, fertile land around it for growing crops. Ancient Egyptians called their country Kemet which meant Black Land. The world’s first national government, arithmetic, and 365 day calendar came from ancient Egyptians. They also invented hieroglyphics and papyrus. Many cultures learned from the Egyptians and their way of life. Pyramids are one of the most known artifacts from Ancient Egypt. They still stand there; many of them are in Giza. They used these pyramids to bury their rulers in underground tunnels. Many of these tunnels contained traps so that thieves could not reach the tomb. Ancient Egyptians were one of the first to believe in life after death. A lot of tombs were buried with gold and treasure because they believed that they could take it in the afterlife. They would also bury their pets in jars to take with them. Today they have uncovered many tombs that help tell the life of ancient Egyptians. Egypt had three classes: upper, middle, and lower. The lowest was the largest group and consisted of unskilled laborers. The middle was merchants, manufactures, and craft workers. The Upper was royal families, government officials, high ranking priests, army officers, and doctors. Each class could move up or down, depending on marriage or success in jobs.

  12. If I could visit any “era” or “culture” in history it would be Italian Renaissance times mostly because of the art that was produced there in that time period but thinking of a place in history I would like to visit was hard. It was hard mostly because i couldn’t think of a period in time where everything was perfect. There where times where great things were accomplished but at the same time horrible things were going on so any period/era/culture isn't really amazing to the point i want to visit it. Anyways, the Italian Renaissance lasted from about the end of the 13th century to 16th century and it marked the transition between the Medieval times and Early Modern Europe. Italy is well known for its sculptures and paintings. One of the most famous known during this time was Leonardo da Vinci. He painted things like The Last Supper and Mona Lisa! I think this would be a wonderful period in time to visit because of the wonderful art. The End.

  13. If I had to choose a time period and place from history to live in, I would choose the Western American Frontier. Families lived on farms where the father worked by hunting or mining and the mother worked on providing clothing for the family and managing the household. Cowboys roamed the land and roped cattle to use for clothing and food. The fur trading system took place all over the West where many trappers and hunters came together to trade for furs to use for clothing or other household items like blankets. The California Gold Rush took place where over 250,000 miners found almost $200 million in gold in just five years. The Native Americans also brought their culture with them and settled in the West. Their influences helped the Americans to learn more efficient ways to plant, trade, and much more. The overall reason that I enjoy this time in history is probably because of the major influence that horses had on this culture. Some parts of this civilization depended on one animal to do important tasks that were needed at that time. For example, the Pony Express was created at this time for transporting mail to other people across the land. Also, the horses were used for plowing or transportation on and off the farms. They were used in the war to carry soldiers to their destination or to transit wounded fighters to the campsites. I personally think it would be interesting to see how people from our culture could rely on hunting and farming and using horses to live their every day lives.

  14. If I could go back to any point in history I would go back to the 1400s and early 1500s to the Aztec civilization. The reason I chose this culture was because the Aztecs were one of the most advanced civilizations in the North America, Mexico, and South America during this time period. I also chose this culture so I could know how the people lived and because such a successful civilization. The main region of the Aztec civilization was located in the Valley of Mexico The Aztecs were so advaced that they built cities and buildings that were just as or even more complex as the ones in Europe during this time period. The Aztec society had four main classes: (one) nobles, (two) commoners, (three) serfs, and (four) slaves. The religion of the Aztecs was very important to them. They spent much of thier time in religious practices such as preyer and singing. WArefare was consider a religious duty by all the Aztec people. They fought for many reasons such as expanding their empire and for sacrifices for their gods and goddesses. One of the main factors of the Aztec culture was their Empire. The Empire consisted of 20 million people in 400 cities and towns. The Empoire was such an importance the Aztec because they wanted to become as great as possible. I found this civilization very interesting by all of the things they were able to accomplish and I you can too by the information I have provided.

  15. If I could choose any culture to visit it would have to be Greek Culture. Modern Greek architecture was concentrated mainly on the Greek Orthodox churches of Greek diaspora. I really enjoy looking at blue prints for Greek building they have so much design and it would have had to of taken longer to build than it does our homes today. Greek architects were influenced by Western European architectural designs. The Greeks tried to combine the traditional Greek architecture and Greek elements and motives with the western European movement and styles. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, Xenia was a nationwide hotel construction program initiated by the Hellenic Tourism Organization to improve the country's tourism infrastructure. I am really fascinated by the skill level in architectural design that these people have. It’s not like any other it more original and old and I like it! I will now tell you a little up to date history on the Greeks. They held the 2004 Olympics. Ancient Greece was the birth place of Western civilization about 2,500 years ago. Greece civilization gas developed very many city states. A city state consisted of a city or town and the surrounding villages and farmland. The Greeks call themselves Hellenes and their land Hellas. Family life in Greece is much like it in the United States, the father heads the house hold, and the wife raises and cares for the house hold. The only thing I wouldn’t like is your parents pick who you marry. The Greeks believe in gods and goddesses that watch over them and protect them daily. One last cool, fact that explains why I would want to visit this culture is, The Greek diet was based on such grains as wheat and barley, which were used to make bread, cakes, and porridge. The Greeks also ate a variety of fruits and vegetables. Their chief sources of protein were eggs, poultry, and fish. The Greeks used olive oil, and they sweetened food with honey. After animal sacrifices, they enjoyed roasted pork, beef, lamb, and goat. I love Food!!

  17. For this assignment I have decided to do the culture of ancient Rome. The story of Rome is how a small farming community became one of the greatest empires ever. Ancient Rome had a huge effect on western civilizations. The language of Rome at that time was Latin. Latin became the basis of many other languages such as French, Italian, and spanish. According to Roman legend, the city of Rome was founded in 753 B.C. The Italian peninsula juts far into the Mediterranean Sea and occupies a central position among the Mediterranean lands. To the north, the Alps provided a natural defense against invaders from central Europe. But passes through the mountains allowed settlers, attracted by the good climate and fertile soil to travel into Italy. People belonged to one of three groups in ancient Rome citizens, non citizens and slaves. At first You could only be a citizen if you were born in Rome. So most people were non citizens. Slaves Were seen as property according to roman law. The Roman Republic was first created in 509 B.C. This government was the first of its kind. The people got to choose their leaders. Cities in the Roman Empire served as centers of trade and culture. So city life was very busy for merchants and the common person. When it comes to religion the Romans adopted most of their gods from the Greeks, giving them Roman names. The roman state controlled religion. Priests were elected by the people just like government officials. But all good things must come to an end. The West Roman Empire fell to Germanic invaders in A.D. 476. Theses are just some of the reasons why I would like to visit ancient Rome.

  18. If I could choose a period of time or culture to live in I would be interested in the Victorian Age during the reign of Queen Victoria when the British Empire was one of the greatest empires the world has ever seen. For more than a century Britain was the foremost global power. The years 1815 to 1914 are referred to as Britain’s imperial century and the empire included over 14 million square miles of territory and 450 million people. It included more than a quarter of the world’s population and it was said that the sun never sat on the British Empire. By this it meant that the British Empire was so vast and covered so many parts of the globe that it was always daylight somewhere in the British Empire. The Empire was vital for trade and during the reign of Queen Victoria, the ports were full of ships arriving from countries around the world. The British Empire influenced the entire world during this period of time. The Great Exhibition of 1851, the world’s first fair, was a celebration of the British Empire’s diversity and richness. Britain gave a huge legacy to many developing nations by teaching them ways of democracy and providing a structure to help lead to self-government.

  19. If I could live in a different time period I would choose to live in Ireland during the early 400s. In the 400s Ireland was first affected by Christianity by a man name Patrick. Patrick was captured as a young boy and in slaved in Ireland. When he escaped he joined the priesthood and went back to Ireland to evangilize to the Irish. Christianity spread all over Ireland and Patrick became known as Saint Patrick. Not only to Saint Patrick bring the Gospel to Ireland, he also brought Latin and education. When Saint Patrick died many missionaries took his place and continued to be missionaries to Ireland. Monasteries sprung up everywhere in Ireland and were known for their great education. I would want to live in this time period because it would be awesome to watch a people group come to the saving knowledge of Christ, grow in understanding and education.

  20. If I could pick any time period in history it would be life in Colonial America. After the people left Europe, they traveled to America to begin a new life. People traveled from all over the world to live there. People came from England, Ireland, France, Scotland, Germany, Wales, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
As colonial settlement continued to grow, there was more trade and war with the Indians. The colonists and Indians both taught each other things. The Indians showed the colonists how to grow things like corn and tobacco, and the colonists introduced them to metal pots, tools, clothes, and other goods.
It would have been interesting to live at a time when our new country was developing. Though ruled by the British crown, the people began to want to govern themselves. They wanted freedom and did not want to follow the rules given by the king of England. The king was making the colonists pay high taxes for goods.
In addition to political freedom, they wanted religious freedom as well. Groups of colonists could worship as they pleased and different churches were established. I would have liked choosing to worship God freely.
Families in colonial America tended to be close. They had to work hard and work together. Colonial families were usually larger and had more children than British families. Whether they were farmers or worked in a certain trade, everyone had to help out. Most of the families were strong and held Christian values. This is important and helped America have a strong foundation.

  21. The article I am writing about is the Lapita culture which has to do with a lot of pottery. The Lapita people were farmers, craftsmen, and seafarers. The Lapita work and pottery was very thin and “needle-like” work. Some of the archeologists think that the people expressed their culture and their way of life in the pottery and their work. The Lapita people were “started” by Austronesions people. Their language and people was started form those Austronesions people. The Lapito people lived on islands and fishing was a main hobby or an important part for them because that is how they ate and lived. Also, they traded their chickens and pigs for obsidian to make glass. Archeologists think that two thousand years ago is when they faded out because of low ocean trade. The rest of the Lapito people mixed and went into other islands such as the Solomon islands.

  22. If I had to pick one culture to go back to and live in it would be Elizabethan England. During the reign of Elizabeth I, England went through a time of great progress known as the “Golden Age.” As a protestant, Elizabeth wanted to restore the protestant Church of England which was started by her father, King Henry VIII, and abolished by her Catholic sister, Queen Mary (known as “Bloody Marry” for her harsh persecution of Protestants.) It was also during this time that England made their first attempts at the colonization of the “New World,” which, although failed when the settlers of the colony of Roanoke mysteriously disappeared, would spark interest in other groups (such as the Puritans and the London Company) to make their own attempts at colonization in the future. There was also much great literature including works by William Shakespeare and Edmund Spenser, and Christopher Marlowe. Elizabeth, known as the “virgin queen” never married and used her single status to her own political advantage. By allowing both Protestant and Catholic suitors she was able to help unite her own country and prevent an attack from Catholic Spain for many years.
Of course, not everyone in England loved their queen as there were many Catholic attempts to assassinate Elizabeth. Suspects included Elizabeth’s Catholic cousin Marry Stuart, Queen of Scotland who’s execution was approved by Queen Elizabeth. Also tension with Spain continued to rise when British ships, led by men like Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Frances Drake, raided Spanish ships. England also sent troops to help Dutch Protestants overcome Spain’s dominance over them. It was these events that led King Phillip II of Spain to send the infamous Spanish Armada to attack England. England won the battle in a victory known as the Defeat of the Spanish Armada. This victory made England the most powerful nation on earth.

Lydia- I really enjoyed your essay this week because I love Ireland! It was really interesting to learn more about St. Patrick. I knew of him and some of the things he did, but I didn’t truly comprehend all he did for not only Christianity but education in Ireland. I found it truly inspiring that he started off being in such a low place, being captured and taken as a slave, only to rise above it and do amazing things with his life. Great job this week!
    Thanks,
    Rebecca
