Homework 5, Due September 14, 2012

This week we will begin our study of ancient Greece. The assignment will take us away from ancient history, however, and cover current events in Greece, giving us the opportunity to become familiar with modern news sources. You should remember that the media, while providing our primary source of information about the world around us, is made up of people just like any of the rest of us - usually having beliefs and causes we'd like others to follow as well. You should read every article with the question in mind: "What is the author's argument (point) and should I agree?" For instance, research has shown that members of the modern US media tend to be somewhat more liberal than the rest of the US population, and often those liberal beliefs are subtly reflected in their writing. Rember, there is no law against having an opinion, and the media is under no obligation to refrain from trying to influence you. It is up to you to read carefully and apply the lessons of critical thinking before you form your own opinions.

Go to the link http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1987368,00.html and read the 2010 Time Magazine article dealing with current events in Greece. After reading the article search the web for other quality news sources that will give you and update on these events. In your essay, summarize the events of the article and state your opinion as to why these events are happening. Answer the question: Could this happen in the US? Why or why not?

Remeber that falling behind in your homework will have a detrimental impact on your grade! For those of you who have stayed on top of your assignments, congratulations on your efforts and learning to manage your time successfully. Have a good week!

  1. From 2010 to 2012, most of the country of Greece has been rioting. Might you ask, "why?" Several of the causes include corruption, unemployment, inflation, the Greek Debt Crisis, welfare cuts and many more reasons. Not only did the people riot, but there was police violence where officers were hurt or beaten or sometimes even killed by the large crowds of Greeks. On May 5, there were a total of 3 deaths. There was also 1 on October 20, and also, one on April 4. However, there were over 320 injuries due to these riots. These events are happening because of lack of authority. The leaders of the country should step up and stop the mobs of people. It is possible to be terminated; it would just take effort. I personally feel like this could happen in the U.S. but it would probably be immediately taken care of. In our country, we have a great deal of authority to govern over us and keep us together as a whole. We should be so thankful not to have to worry about corruption like this happening in our every day lives in America.

  2. Greece riots. Riots in general are not a good thing, obviously. Riots, according to the Webster Dictionary, are a noisy, violent uproar that starts with a group of people. According to the article we had to read, there was a riot toward the bank that three people were killed in. On May 5th, 2010, there was another riot that was caused by the raising of taxes. It is also one of the largest riots since 1973. On May 25th, 2011 the anti-austerity group started the Indignant Citizens Movement which started in major countries in Greece. Some of the protestors in Athens were violent and they used social networking websites. In Result of that, they received a nickname called the “May of Facebook.” On June 29th the protestors and the police were in a violent clash against one another because of a vote of Eu’s requirements. To answer the questions that was given, Yes! I think riots could possibly happen in the United States because of one that comes to mind is the political poles and views of us American’s. Riots will become more prominent as our country draws further away from God. That is why already I think we have had as many problems as we have had because of our beliefs have suffered away from God. Also along with Political stands, I think debates in general could lead into riots such as abortion, homosexuality, and other subjects people have different views on. As Christians we should just do the Lord’s will and place it in His hands.

    2. Nice work on your essay, Bethany! I very liked how you used the definition of the word riot to describe the fighting and chaos that is going on today in modern, day Greece. I agree with you that the more America strays away from God, the more strife and problems are going to occur. America has in many ways lost sight of God, and we have forgotten what this country was founded on. We must take a stand for what we believe in and always keep God first.

  3. On May 5, 2010, people around Greece started to riot against the bank. The riots began because of plans to cut public spending and raise taxes. Three people were killed and it was one of the largest riots in Greece since 1973. Greece is already in a huge debt crisis and cannot afford a huge riot. Greece still continues to question spending and raising taxes. Some of the plans include cuts to civil service pay, higher taxes and sweeping reforms to pensions and labor laws. The news covered the riot internationally. There was no television or newspapers because Greek journalists protested. Police estimate 30,000 people participated. I believe this could happen in America but not everybody would be a part of it. The wealthy wouldn’t really care and would probably fight against it. I could see the government trying to raise taxes to pay off the debt. The debt is so high that it’s almost impossible to pay off. We spend so much everyday that debt could quickly pile up again. There already have been a few strikes about money and taxes in the last few years. I believe it will always be problem for us because we rely on oil and other resources from other countries. The government also adds more plans that cost millions of dollars. If there was a riot in America I believe it would be divided and resolved fairly quickly.

    1. Great job on your essay Patricia! You could tell you were well informed and gave your opinion clearly.

    2. Good essay Patricia! Your opinion about why this could happen in America was very true. Greece like America is in so much debt that it makes it hard for the government and the people to spend money and pay off debt at the same time. Raising taxes seems to the government like an easy fix, but it makes it difficult on the people who don’t have a high income.

  4. The first thing the Time article is protests that happened.
On May 5, 2010, rioters set a burning building on fire, 20 people were trapped inside and three bank workers were killed during this chaos. These were the first deaths in a protest since 1991.
Police tried to hold rioters back with tear gas and smoke bombs.
The cause of this riot was money. The Bible says that "the love of money is the root of all evil" and you can clearly see that it was in this case. I think this could defiantly happen to America because people are greedy, and no matter how much they have, they will always want more. I think that the riot shouldn't have gotten to the point where three innocent people died.. That's just wrong. They could've done it in a way that it wouldn't have been violent. I also think that this could happen to America because we are having serous economic problems. The current debt is about 16,000,000,000,000 dollars, and that number is rising on a DAILY basis. So yes, I think this situation could defiantly happen in America.

  5. This week's assignment was somewhat of an eyeopener. It is so easy- for me at least- to get caught up only in America's issues and forget about the world. Anyway, back to the assignment. In May of 2010,riots began to form in the nation of Greece. These were some of the worst riots since 1973. In one instance, a riot was started in a bank killing three people.A quote by then prime minister George A. Papandreo in the article said, "this is where uncontrolled violence leads, and this is where political irresponsibilty takes us." I personally beleive that this is happening becuase of insufficient leadership and greed. Considering that this had been going on, I beleive that Greece should have taken more precautions to "look out" for things such as riots to rise up. I also believe that a thing like this could happen in the United States. I say this becuase of the many different visions for America and the economic turmoil we are facing. With that being said, however, I agree with what McKenzie said about America taking care of a situation like this quickly and efficiently. Overall, I believe that it is a shame that this going on in Greece and hopefully America never travels down that dangerous path.
    Thank you,

  6. In 2010 Greece was caught in a whirlwind of riots. Protests became more and more violent every day. The article in Times is about the protest that cost three lives. Protesters set fire to a bank and they were trapped inside. They could have save but the protesters stood in the way of the emergency vehicles. The reason for the violence was that Greece was on the brink of bankruptcy. Greece had just recieved a $145 billion bail-out. Of Greece became bankrupt the workers would suffer as the abnormally wealthy would not be affected. More recently, July 2011, Greece was rioting outside of Parliament for over forty-eight hours which officially shut down the country. They also did this because of the government's decision on how to deal with their debt.

  7. For the last two years, there have been many riots in the nation of Greece. This is because of the nation’s economic problems. For the past years, the economy of Greece has been really bad; they have experienced a major deficit and a major unemployment crisis. After applying for bailouts from the UN three times Greece isn’t really trusted in the international economic community. But Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has persuaded some countries to help support his plan to reduce the nation’s deficit. The only problem is that the people don’t like this harsh plan to set the economy back on track. I could see this happening to the United States in a few years. With unemployment at 8% and our 16 trillion (that’s right, 16,000,000,000,000) dollar dept I think we are in pretty bad condition right now. If unemployment and inflation continue to rise I could definitely see what is happening in Greece also happening in the United States. Obviously, people are already mad at our economic situation and a lot of people feel that it can only get worse. As long as our dept continues to increase I do believe that protest will start to get more and more violent. Our only hope as a nation is the power of God and the prayers of his people. The Bible says in 1 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

  8. Angry protests in Greece became very violent, and three people were killed. Police estimate that at least 30,000 protesters gathered in Athens. The protesters used tear gas and set cars and buildings on fire. Three people died when a bank they were in burned and emergency workers could not reach the site. The mob was upset over changes proposed by the government of Greece. These changes designed to save the country from financial ruin include: deep cuts in state spending causing pay cuts to people and increased taxes. Teachers, government workers, pensioners, and members of the military would be affected. Greece has borrowed $145 billion from the International Monetary Fund and the European Union to avoid bankruptcy. Many workers have joined a nationwide strike to protect the pay cuts and higher taxes. The violence has now greatly decreased. There is still however, much anger on the part of the Greek people toward the government.
I believe these kinds of protests could happen in the United States as the financial condition of the country worsens. Our country is in very steep debt. The national deficit continues to increase. Many people have lost jobs and living costs have gone up. The price of gasoline is very high. Frustration on the part of citizens can result in angry protests that can get out of hand and become violent. Often, as the government tries to deal with these protests, tensions increase. The violence escalates and the focus shifts from issues the protesters wish to convey to how to control furious mobs. The country of Greece continues to struggle with finances and strife. According to IMF Greece needs more time to achieve their financial goals.

  9. Things such as this, are things that the government tried to ignore or avoid. Cars and buildings on fire, bombs and riots were huge problems. There were several protests that were going on, and also anger would erupt on streets and people would basically go crazy. The anger went from bad to worse! And bank workers were trapped in the burning building, since they had been firebombed by angry rioters. 3 of the employees were killed in that incident.. when uncontrolled anger and rioting breaks out there isn’t a whole lot that you can do but hope and pray it doesn’t get worse. I feel that if things got WAY worse then maybe it’s a possibility that something like this may happen! All we can do is hope and pray that it doesn’t.

  10. Patricia- I really loved your essay for this week’s assignment. You organized and researched the topic quite well in my opinion. I agree with you especially about your argument about your theory on riots perhaps starting in America. Overall, I thought you did a great job this week!
Bethany- I also really enjoyed your essay this week. I loved how you put the actual definition of what a riot is- it added something special to the essay. Like I said to Patricia, I agree with you on how riots may up-rise in America. We as a nation need to keep God as our focus or things will get unbearably out of hand. Overall great job on your essay this week!
    Thank you,

  12. In 2010 Greece was caught in a ton of riots. Protests started to become more violent daily. The Times article is about a protest that cost three people their lives. some Protesters set fire to a bank and they were inside trapped. They could have saved them but the protesters stood in the way of the emergency vehicles and people trying to help. The reason for the violence, was that Greece was on the near brim of bankruptcy. Greece had just recieved a $145 billion dollar bail-out. Once Greece became bankrupt the workers suffered as the extreamly wealthy would not be affected. More recently Greece was rioting outside of Parliament for around forty-eight hours which would officially shut down the country. They also did this because of the government's decision on how to deal with their extreamly large debt. i do think something simalrar could happen in the us because of our large national debt.

  13. In May of 2010 riots broke out in the country of Greece causing thedeath of three bank workers. The rioters set a bank on fire. The reason for all of these riouts were because of the poor economical system in the country. The country of Greece has had to borrow 145 million dollors in order to keeo the coiuntry from going bankrupt. The people broke out into riots because they didnt like the fact that the government kept borrowing money and making their taxes more and more every day. They didnt like they way they were handleing the debt of the country. The people didnt want them to just keep borrowing more and more momney they want more advancement in the country so they can battle thier own way out of debt instead of borrowing more money everyday. I think that something liek this could happen in America for the simole fact of we are in debt and it keeps growing every day and i think eventually people are just going to get tired of it and eventually begin to riot just like they did in the country of greece.

  14. In May of 2010 in the country of Greece many riots broke lose causing the death of three workers in a local bank. The rioters were seen throwing cocktails, gases, and other hazardous items at buildings all around Greece including the bank which caught fire causing the death of those three. In my opinion this is all a lack of control in the government and leadership of Greece. The people were uset about the governments decisions and obviously the people knew they were stronger than the officials and leaders. the cause of the death of the three people was simply because help could not reach the bankers because of the mass people of the riots. This very same situation can easily and eventually will happen to the United States. Slower and slower the government is angering the people and losing control because of economic issues, laws, and other rulings. If us has a nation do not center the power back to the government this country will fall apart and we will end up with the same problems of Hreece if not worse.

  15. On May 5, the Greek people being angered at the government for agreeing to slash $38 billion from the state budget over the next three years boiled over with deadly consequences. Three bank workers died in a blaze set by rioting protesters at Marfin Egnatia Bank. The protests are usually organized and non violent. This one however went south quickly. The greek government has made the mistake of borrowing to much money. But even worse the people will not let them raise taxes to help pay for the debt. The greek government now has to make huge spending cuts wich obviously did not make the people happy. This looks to me like what might be happening in the US. We keep spending money and borrowing wich has led us to be in a 16 trillion dollar debt. We are a little more linnet than the Greeks when it comes to government spending cuts but we are still not good enough. We also are borrowing more money from countries than we make. If we keep this up other countries will not keep lending us money and our people, like the Greeks, will start to riot and people will get hurt or maybe even killed. Even today the Greeks are struggling. The people are wanting to live a life style that they can not afford. Lets just hope that the same problem does not occur in America for some time because if it does we will be digging a hole that we cant get out of.

All over Greece including the bank caught fire causing the death of three people. I think that the government needs to get better control over the people. All the people we just mad about some of the decisions the government have made. So they know they are stronger so they went crazy. This same thing can happen on the US because the government is making decisions that tick people off. But back in Greece they are still living a lifestyle they can't pay for so they are digging a deeper and deeper hole. I sure hope that America does get that bad. If America keeps going the way we are and don’t have someone step in and make the necessary changes or if our president doesn’t change then very soon we can become a very angry nation.

  17. For this week’s assignment we were to read an article from Times magazine on Greece and their riots. As you know most of Greece has been rioting from 2010-2012. The reason for this is corporation, unemployment, Greek depth crisis, inflation, cuts of the welfare and many many more. Many are being killed because of these riots on May 5, 3 were killed, on October 20, 1 was killed and on April 4, 1 was killed as well. As result 320 people have been injured. “Could this happen to us?” I believe that it could happen to us. If our country doesn’t pick its self-back up and stop falling into more and more tragedy we will get their more and more people than ever before are out of jobs. Our debt rate is out of control. We will never ever be able to pay that off. I really wish that money was never made everything was free it was the way of life people wouldn’t be greedy and go take large amounts but when they needed something you could just go. The only problem with that is people wouldn’t want to work. But if they never knew a different way maybe we could make it work.
