Homework 1, Due March 11, 2011

Because the comments part of this assignment is not due until Sunday, March 13, and I hope to have my grades posted before that, this assignment will be the first of the fourth quarter. That reminds us that the end of the year is is sight!

In honor of the Industrial Revolution, which is the topic of our upcoming lectures, this assignment will focus on the modern technological revolution, which shares many characteristics with the era we are studying. Every day you observe developing technologies and their results, and it hardly surprises anyone when some new invention or website appears that seems to change everything.

Your assignment will focus on some current inventions and changes that perhaps aren't as visible but still hold great importance. Follow the link

to see a report by the RAND Corporation dealing with observations and predictions for the year 2015. RAND (Research and Devlopment) has been around for decades (same people that make the RAND/McNally maps) as a non-profit "think-tank", providing information to the government, researchers, and businesses in order to help them make better decisions.

Go to the RAND report and read and report on one of the following sections: THE REVOLUTION OF LIVING THINGS; THE REVOLUTION OF MATERIALS, DEVICES, AND MANUFACTURING; or META-TRENDS AND IMPLICATIONS. (Feel free to read the complete report, but it's rather lengthy). In your report answer the following questions: Are the changes, as a whole, an improvement for humanity? Of the concerns mentioned, which seems most important to you, and why? And finally, if you were asked to make a single prediction in the area upon which you are reporting for the year 2050, what would it be?

Be sure to follow the requirements for these assignments. They have a great impact on your grade!

  1. I chose the section "Revolution of Living Things". I chose this section mainly because the first pargraph caught my attention and it actually scared me. Now, most people know that I am strictly opposed to almost all new technology (For those who don't know, I say America would be better off going back to living the way we did in the early 1900's and back, but that's not important for this essay) One of the paragraphs mentioned that by 2015 they will be able to "improve the human species and clone humans". Does that scare anybody else?!?! God designed us just as we are meant to be. There is nothing to be "improved." And cloning humans? I think these people have watched a few too many Scy-Fy movies!

Are the changes, as a whole, an improvement for humanity? I believe that in some ways, such as when it mentioned better disease control, would be an improvement for humanity. With better disease control, there would be less sick people and less health care bills. As a whole, however, I am inclined to say NO it is NOT an improvement for humanity!! If any of this stuff is around by 2015, I'm going to be scared to death! Give me the Ol' West era any old time! Personly, I fear technological advances because I believe that the more technology you have, the father you get from the simple way of life and of what is important. I envy those who lived in the 1900's and back.

Of the concerns mentioned, which seems most important to you, and why? I would have to say the cloning seems to be the most important to me. This really stuck out to me because it seems like the scientists want to play God. Only God can create a person, people can't create people by using science. All of these clones would probably appear to be a human, but really it would be a messed up robot. Ever seen Star Wars? Remember what happened to the Clone Troopers? How they were all basically just robots, even though they had their own personalities at one point. What is to make these clones in real life would be any different from the Clone Troopers of Star Wars, controlled by a single man with just his words? No thanks! I like it the way it is, each person having their own mind and not controlled by anyone!

And finally, if you were asked to make a single prediction in the area upon which you are reporting for the year 2015, what would it be? Ok, I'm going to be really pessimistic right here. What do I predicate? I predicate that all this stuff that these scientists want to happen to blow up in our faces and make life even worse. If any of this stuff was to happen, then all hope for America is doomed. I sincerlly believe that it will be because of technology, along with debt and war, that will cause America's downfall. I do not look forward to that at all. If all this is to happen in just 4 short years, then let me start packing and head to the hills. I do not want to be around for any of this.

  2. I read the section on “The Revolution of Living Things.” Whether or not they are an improvement for humanity is really a matter of opinion. The matters discussed were things like, stem cell research, cloning, and genetic mutation. In my opinion, cloning humans is not a benefit or a priority. Having a bunch of cloned humans would not be beneficial accept for the fact that we would have more manual workers. Cloning animals would provide more food recourses, but then the issue of health is brought up. Overall, the living things revolution would be beneficial in finding more cures for the diseases many suffer from, but the cloning of humans and genetic mutation would not be beneficial. The most important to me would be the forming of new cures and vaccines for diseases. Cancer is a big one. If a cure (other than the harmful chemotherapy) could be implemented, many lives would be relieved of death and suffering. As for what it is going to be like in 2050, I have no idea, but I can make a prediction. It is funny to look back at people’s opinions of 2000, so I’m sure this will be just as humorous. I think that much of our manual labor demand will be gone. Everything will be done by technology. A person’s greatest asset will be their ability to invent new technology. Sports or other forms of entertainment will still be a big money maker, but just on a larger scale. We may be flying hover cars and have those transporter things, but I do think technology will be the main source of work and performance in the future.

  3. "Revolution of Materials, Devices, and Manufacturing" . Its amazing to me many times when people like my parents age say "wow when I was a kid ...", “We listened to our music on record players and watched really cheesy movies on a little black and white TV.", " or nobody had even heard of cell phones and a computer had less capabilities than a modern day calculator."

So much has changed in such a small amount of time! Its like at one point it was amazing to have a movable typewriter. And its not like that was just one of the millions of inventions and advances in technology there was hardly anything new invented ever! Now it isn't a surprise when hundreds of inventions and advances are discovered every year. And they find like hundreds of new ways to invent and manufacture something for like nothing all the time.

Are the changes an improvement for humanity? People would argue different points of view when it comes to this question. My answer is yes it is an improvement and no it isn't. Most everything has their advantages and disadvantages. Improvement in our technology is awesome! We can message someone from across America and get one back from them seconds later. Facebook allows us to connect with people from all over the world. People use it for business and advertising as well. With those advancements come more problems. Social networking can be dangerous with so many people with bad intentions out there. Also people can be manipulated and controlled as never before. And with government and many important groups and institutions relying on the web and new technology it can be dangerous in the case of hacking, viruses, loss of very important information and memory. With dangers such as those, some technology shouldn't be relied upon for such important matters. Also people become more dependent on technology, not their own abilities or others abilities and that could cause major, undesired repercussions.

One of the most important of the concerns to me is that people will become more reliant upon technology and less upon people. The more a person relies upon technology it seems in many cases the less and less people have the need to have physical contact with people. Which not only causes underdeveloped social skills but it seems it would cause a lack of trust without that physical contact to build it. Also having physical contact with someone builds more personal and caring relationships .

Fun, a prediction of 2015. Well, my guess would be that many things that are popular now will still be popular then like entertainment and things like that. I think that clothing and hair styles will probably have severely changed only because they have changed so fast in just the past few years. And I believe we'll have more energy efficient transportation, housing, and all that jazz. I think it is going to be funny to look back and see all the changes and the ridiculousness of our predictions.

  5. I read the section about "The Revolution of living things". it talks about how the biotechnology will be different in the year 2015, it says that the discoveries in biotechnologies will drastically reduce the amount of disease, malnutrition, food production, pollution, life expectancy, quality of life, crime, and security. They also have bio implants and prosthetics for humans, which improve human performances beyond the regular levels of performance. They also plan on cloning humans, which could be some of the most controversial arguments among people in the history of humanity.
Are the changes, as a whole, an improvement for humanity? in a way i think all these dicoveries and researches can be extremely helpful and great improvements to humanity. But they can also be extremely harmful to humanuty if used wrongly.
Of the concerns mentioned, which seems most imoortant to you, and why? Well to me the most important concern to focus on would be between cloning of humans, safety and ethics of genetically modified organisms, or the use of stem cells. But it would probably have to be the use of stem cells for tissue engineereing, because they tissue comes from human embryos.
If i were asked to make a single prediction in the area upon which which i am reporting, what would it be? That they are doing all these processes, but with more harmless and efficient ways.

  6. on your essay emily cox, I really liked it, and enjoyed reading about the revolution of living things. Like you, i chose to do my report on the revolution of living things as well. I found it to be more interesting than the others personally, but moost of your opinions you had about the article on the revolution of living things were similar to the opinions i had about the topic. I thin most of the things that they are expecting to happen can be a great success for humanity, and can be extremely benificial to people and make life a lot better and easier. but at the same time they can be extremely helpful and could potentially be harmful to humanity in the long run. it talks about cloning, which im sure many people will be apposed to. but great job on yoour essay emily, i really enjoyed reading it.

  7. Morgan, your essay was very good! I really liked how you pointed out that everything has a good side and a bad side. Like technology, it has so many good points, but yet we are constantly reminded of its negative repercussions. Humanity is constantly changing because of technology. The iPad was the newest and the best you could buy, but they already have made changes and are producing a more advanced version of the iPad. How are they even doing this, I don’t know, but it definitely effects humans. Our communication skills, outlook on social standings, and priorities have all been altered because of the advancement of technology.

Christian, I agree with your take on the advancement in bio technology. I also wrote my essay on this and couldn’t believe that some of experiments taking place could be safe for the population as a whole. In my opinion, I really don’t understand why you would want to clone a human being to create multiples of one already living. The methods used to perform these experiments create many controversial topics among people today. It’s definitely a topic that needs research and study before taking a stand.

  8. Essay from Jerome Geils-Lindemann,
this week I want to talk about "THE REVOLUTION OF LIVING THINGS".
For me it sounds very interesting and exciting.
When I read the section about "The Revolution of living things", it
talks about what will be different in 2015 with the biotechnology.
It sais it will get bigger in all dimensions of life: social,
    economic, political, and personal.
The revolution reduces the amount of diseases, malnutrition, food production, pollution,
life expectancy, quality of life, crime, and security
It talks about to control better diseases, custom drugs, gene therapy,
age mitigation and reversal, memory drugs, prosthetics, bionic implants,
    animal transplants etc.
I think the most interesting part is that humans are maybe able to clone humans
in 2015. In my ears it sounds awesome.
But they saying they don't know for sure, but for sure they can tell
you can see at least some narrow attempts such as gene therapy for
genetic diseases and cloning by rogue experimenters. What is still awesome.
Their are also some negative things coming up soon like in
ethical, moral, religious, privacy, and environmental debates and protests.

So back to the questions. Are the changes, as a whole, an improvement for humanity?
I think all these dicoveries can be very helpful and great improvements to humanity.
But the negative thing is I think that new big issues will be coming then. For example if used wrongly(Nuclear).

Of the concerns mentioned, which seems most important to you, and why?
I guess the cloning humans is my most important concern, because something can go wrong. Including concerns
over morality, errors, induced medical problems, gene ownership, and human breeding

If you were asked to make a single prediction in
the area upon which you are reporting for the year 2050, what would it be?
I guess the music style completly changed also with clothing.
I think that we solved the nuclear problem and with the gas price of the cars, because we don't even drive cars anymore, because
we are floating in the air. I think we won't have a landscape arround the cities but if we do it will be so dirty and very trashy.
I think if you look up in the sky you just would see darkness, because of all the fumes.
Many people will be very fat and sitting in a wheel chair controlled by a roboter.:D
I think that is my prediction...

  9. Jerome, interesting essay I have to say your predictions are really quite funny. Its funny because you make such extreme predictions for a time so close to now. 2015 is only like four years away. I know we have so many capabilities and so many more are presented all the time but I have to say I disagree about most people being very fat and sitting in wheel chairs, and the sky being so dark, and our landscape disappearing. Good job though you made a very thorough prediction :)...

  10. Private Elija, very good thorough essay. You definitely covered everything well. I have to agree with you on the fact that cloning humans would NOT be good a good idea and its scary to think about. It is scary to think about how fast everything is changing and to think about my future and the future for my family. But, I disagree with you about technology being America's downfall. I said in my essay everything has its negatives and positives but, I dont see technology in general being the reason for downfall. In fact, IF it were to happen I believe it would be more from moral dissipation. Technology is definitely going to have its negatives, it always will, but I think it does more for us than against us. I think that going back to old west times there would be people saying the same thing. It will always be and scary thing and leave people with a lot of doubts. But people will never have a desire to quit knowing and learning. We will always want to know more and I don't believe thats a bad thing.

  11. In reading about "Revolution of Material Devices and Manufacturing", it states "Societies that are reluctant to change will have problems."
Thomas Edison came up with the devices that would begin three American industries, electrical power, recorded music and motion pictures. He invented the 20th century.
Many people are not aware of the way he brought mass brain power to the process of invention. Menlo Park, Edison's laboratory became the foundation for research and development. Edison taught us how to invent!
The Rand report states..."The fast pace of technological change with "creative destruction"
(what does that mean?) of industries will increase the importance of continued education and training.Societies that are reluctant to change will have problems."
Rand goes on to talk about the speed of information changing. The science of buildings being able to adapt to weather. Clothing that can change according to weather.
July 5, 2010, Time Magazine states that American pre-eminence in the crucial field of Science and Technology is flagging. Japan, South Korea and even China's investment in research and development has advanced by leaps and bounds. We were once among the top countries in terms of science and engineering degrees we now rank near the bottom among 23 nations that collect data. In 2007 the U.S. awarded 22.5000 doctorates in science and engineering, more that half went to foreign nationals.
Rand states..."The degree to which science and technology can accomplish such change and achieve it's benefits will come to those who create, promote and implement it.
My thought on all of the inventions is this. Time will tell. Man will always want to live longer, live easier, look better and seem smarter than the next person. My concern is that America get back to creating the atmosphere for science and engineering to excel. With moral values being placed in people's hearts.

  12. I have chose this week to do my essay on the revolution of materials, devices, and manufacturing. Now to answer your first question... do i think these changes are good for humanity... yes i believe a large majority of the inventions and modernizations are good for us... they are here to improve our quality of life and now that we have adjusted to them we probably couldn't live without them.

Now to answer you second question. My main concern would definitely have to be the lack of privacy that is brought forth by the new technology... it makes me personally, very uncomfortable knowing that just about anyone can get a hold of just about any of my information at anytime. it makes me feel extremely out in the open and exposed and i don't like that prospect of the matter at all!

And finally for your last question, wow my goodness this is definitely a tough one! a prediction for 2050... well lets see I'd say that many, many things will be different... I'm sure the iphone 4 will be equivalent to those old bag phones that we call dinosaurs now. And like there is no doubt that the style of clothing will change drastically, i mean just look back just 10 years its CRAZY the changes that have happened in that short amount of time. And last but not least i think that electric cars will have officially dominated by then like "gas cars" will be a historical moment in ancient history. But that's just my opinion :)

  13. This week I will focus on the Revolution of Materials. The revolution brought many things with it positive but also negative. In the past the Industrial revolution was a radical change from handmade works to mass production with the help of new invented machines and factories. Back than it was hard for farmers to stay with their jobs and a lot tried to get work in a city factory. People lost their jobs and got replaced by machines or by people who were willing to work for less money than the worker before. Even today we see negative sides of that. The quality of products like clothes, toys and furniture is not the best, since a machine can’t replace a good handmade product. The reason why we like buying the machine made work is the price. Our society is willing to invent new and better machines which can produce faster and more products in a short amount of time. We always try to find the cheapest way to produce. I think it is good that we have factories which can produce a lot of the same products since that gives us the opportunity to choose from different kinds of products. On the other side it is sad that everything is made be machines, old traditions, quality and jobs like shoemakers, dressmakers etc.
I also believe that in 2015 there will be everything made by machines and nothing by hand. What kind of machines I don’t know, but I guess we will see.

  14. Jerome,
great job on your essay it was really nicely worded and everything and oh my goodness your predictions were quite comical i must admit but i loved them a lot! on the down side of that a portion of them are not that far out there. but anyways great job :)

    Biggin,
i really liked you essay! it was super duper informative and i learned a lot from it. you put in information that i definitely failed to see so great job there too :) so over all fantastic job!

    Morgan,
i agree a lot with your first paragraph like its so true like people don't way the pros and cons of all of these things. and as on facebook i don't believe some people get the concept of how many people have access to there information... therefore they don't think twice about what they say its scary really. these days you just never know who is watching every move you make (theoretically speaking. anyways great job on your essay :)

  15. I find this week’s assignment very interesting. Also, I think that it is important to learn about our future and how humanity will improve in technological areas and how the world will change by that. I thought it was intriguing to read what people predict to happen over the next decades in the area of technology. I am wondering if those predictions will really come true.
I looked at the area of The Revolution of Living Things.
Are the changes an improvement for humanity? Yes, I think they are. Quality of human life will increase significantly. For instance, as mentioned in the article, we will be able to control diseases better. I guess that there will be new curing methods for diseases like Cancer or Alzheimer’s. In addition to that, humans are predicted to live longer, and be safer with new advances in security systems.
There will be some rough changes that are already being debated about, because of either ethical, moral, or religious reasons. The most important one for me is cloning. The article said that in already four years, in the year 2015, we will be so advanced to be able to clone humans. I personally am against that improvement, as scientists would call it. Why would we need to clone humans? I know that there need to be made big advancements in working with DNA, because it is important to cure diseases. But I don’t think it is necessary for us to take it so far to say that we can multiply humans. The more we advance in the technological field, The power people discover they have over the world is not always good, because it can easily put them in the position of God.
My prediction for the year 2050 would be that humans will be able to control every living creature on this earth. We will be able to clone people and animals, and also “produce” them in factories. This prediction makes me a little scared of the future. But as long as people handle their knowledge wisely to advance in the technological area there will be many improvements we can look forward to.

  16. This week i will be writing my essay on the revolution of materials, devices, and manufacturing.I believe that the advancement made over the year have help in many ways. It makes big tasks smaller and simple tasks, simpler. But obviously there is a down side to this too. Many are being spoiled by this, and when something goes wrong we tend to forget that there is a way to do it other than just a click of a button. It also can create laziness.

A big concern for me, and many others, is privacy. Things like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc. have a lot of personal information that can be stolen pretty easily if the right person was to get to it. This pretty much freaks me out so i myself always put as little information in as possible.

My prediction for 2050? Well, things move fast now so i can’t imagine how fast they would
move in the year 2050. The iPad that is just recently come out (or will be coming out soon)
would be considered obsolete. Like when we look back on cell phones from the early 2000's.
That’s crazy. As for clothes.. I can’t imagine. Looking back on the year 2011 would be like
looking about at the 80's now. Maybe the pants will be even tighter by then... who knows. All i can say
is, we’ll just have to see if we are here on this earth that long.

  17. Emily Lynn,
Good essay!! I agree with you that technology does cause laziness. I mean, I can understand computers and cell phones (gotta keep in touch with friends you never get to see, after all!) But some of the things we have now-a-days blows my mind because we don't really need it. For example, I don't understand the need for an iPhone or iPad. I mean, for a phone all you really need is texting and calling. And the iPad just seems like an annoying computer made for people to lazy to go onto a realy computer and use a mouse! Also, what you said about clothing changing cracked me up! I agree, though by then, if things keep going the way they are now modesty wise, there may be no clothes at all! That's a scary thought! Good essay!

    Jerome,
Good essay, but I sure hope your predictions are completly wrong!!! That would be a scary world and I definatly wouldn't wanna be around then!! haha Good essay!

  18. I think that this weeks assignment was very interesting. I was especially interested in the section about Biotechnology. The reason I was interested in this is because this field is something that I have considered going into. Now on to the questions. Are the changes, as a whole, an improvement to humanity? I think that this question leaves a very large area that needs to be addressed. First there is the area of plants. mankind has been in some way bioengineering new and improved plant species for some time now. The first examples of this were simply choosing what plant got what pollen. Now scientists are actually splicing plants DNA together in order to create a new specie. The second area is medicine. scientists are now able to take a strand of a virus and genetically deconstruct it so that they can then use that information to make a better cure. These two areas I think are improving humanity with less risk than the third area. The third area is human bioengineering. This area presents the most possible risks but it also can be the most beneficial. It is because of discoveries in this area that we have things like prosthetic limbs and joints, and transplants. As someone who has received a transplant I can say that these are some very great and awesome achievements. However, this area is also the one that presents the most difficult questions like should mankind begin cloning and genetically engineering itself? Now the second question. I think that the most important concern is that of gene rights. If some one was to become the owner of a genetic sequence that a vast majority of people have then that person, in theory, would have the power to determine if someone could have that genetic sequence. I don’t know about you but that thought kind of worries me. Now the final question. By the year 2050 I think that we will have the capability to successfully genetically engineer the “Perfect Human”.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I chose to do my essay on "The Revolution of Living Things." Biotechnology may be initiated as soon as 2015. I think this could be very promising; I think this could in some ways help us. I think this could help improve are bodies and make us more immune to diseases and illness, this could over all advance are life span. They say that by 2015 we may be able to use the advance of genetic engineering to clone humans! This may not happen by 2015 but there will probably be some experiments such as gene therapy for genetic diseases.

The problems we could face with the Revolution in Biotechnology. We are already facing ethical, moral, and religious debates, and theses will get worse as we get closer to 2015.

I think overall this will be an improvement for humanity; making human more immune to illness, disease, and other things. To me the most important concern is cloning humans; there is so much that could go wrong with it. I believe that 50 years from now in biotech we will be far more advances obviously, and we will probably discover more things to increase our overall life.

  20. This really isn’t my favorite subject but I hope that at the end of this essay, I will know a little more about it and be then more interested.
I want to talk about the revolution of living things because, I think, this subject seems to have more importance to us.
Biotechnology sure is an improvement for humanity but I couldn’t say if it is a good thing or not. When we talk about the revolution of biology, we talk about increasing the quality of life but also all the Eugenics and cloning which isn’t that good.
The person that wrote the article about The revolution of living things said: “Disease, malnutrition, food production, pollution, life expectancy, quality of life, crime, and security will be significantly addressed, improved, or augmented. “
I think he was pretty clear and direct. I won’t have anything to add to this part of the subject.
The most important subject, I think, would be the cloning of humans, including concerns over morality, errors, induced medical problems, gene ownership, and human breeding.
God created us as unique human beings. Therefore, I think that it is wrong to do cloning and all this other “stuff” that would make a “human being” (if we can call it like that) that isn’t created by God!
I think that in 2050, Biotechnology will be able to fight almost any kind of diseases.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think the question if the changes as a whole are an improvement for humanity is really easy to answer. I think they are definitely not a step back so they are an improvement. They make our daily live so much easier and help us a lot. Especially in the area medicine I think they have a big impact. We are able to treat so many injuries or diseases or other stuff already so successful that I think in 2015 we are able to treat even more. I mean in the past people were pretty much dead when they got a cold and now we even go to school with a cold sometimes. So I think in these areas are going to be inventions who are just amazing. Although we should be careful with the new power we get. We are able to do many thinks but if we are not careful we can also do big damage. If criminals or terrorists get these things in their hands they can do really big damage. So we need to protect these things in advance and be prepared.
I think in 2050 we are able to drive in cars driven by their self, maybe even earlier because I know from a German University who actually already tested something like that in the public traffic. We will be able to travel even faster than today from one place to another. Our quality of life will increase constantly and the expectation of the length of a life will rise too. We will be able to make artificially organs, legs, arms probably almost everything. The military will probably more and more be concentrated on the internet. Even today most countries have special units who are responsible for the internet. Almost everything is based on computers today so I think that is going to be the battle field of tomorrow cause you have so much power with it.
Generally I think it is really hard to predict these things and most the things I predicted are actually already tested right now and probably achieved in maybe 10-20 years. Also if you look back to the development of new things it doesn’t increase constantly it more increases exponentially.

We are supposed to make a prediction for 2050 not 2015 so I don't think Jerome's predictions are absurd. Just saying :)

This week I will write about the "Revolution of Materials". I think most of the time a revolution changes many things, positives and negatives. The first industrial revolution made a huge change for the people. Suddenly they didnt had to do so much physical work anymore, they had machines. Men started thinking about leaving a village and living in a city and being a factory worker instead of being a farmer. People lost their jobs and got replaced by machines or by people who were willing to work for less money than the worker before. Still today, 250 years later, we have a positive and a negative side of that. The quality of products like clothes, toys and furniture is a lot less than it used to be, since the prize is cheaper. The prize is for the majority of the people the most important things. A lot of people prefer to buy for less money even if they have to buy it a few years later again. I think everybody has to decide for him or herselfe if he wants to buy something handmade but for double prize or not.
I believe that the machines in 2015 won't be that much better, they will be but not too much. But there will be big change if you look further to the year 2050. I think robots may do everything, maybe even the "handmake" work. We will see.

  24. I'm going to write about '' the revolution of .materials, devices, and manufacturing '' and " The revolution of living things " .At first I decided to write about the revolution of materials, devices, and manufacturing but i also interested in the revolution of living things so i'm going to write both of them well let's start . The answer of the first question is Yes these are good for the living things ,our society and the humanity .And these can make the good qualities for the majority of people .My second answer is the lack of privacy is also new technology and new inventions And people don't feel comfortable about it .And the last question i'm pretty sure that a lot of things will change and people will be smarter and create many new invention for that comfortable of our living things and i think the most important things would be the technology and the medical stuff those would be really important and useful in the future .

  25. According to RAND, the revolution of living things will bring immense changes to our society. By 2015 we will have heighten senses due to artificial sensor implants, live much longer from advances in the medical field, and no doubt have even more technological toys to play with. This is our future, but with it will also come consequences. With all the gene experimentation, it is quite possible we could irreversibly damage our environment. Controversy will play a huge part in the science community, especially when messing with human DNA.
Overall, I think these changes will be incredible to witness in the coming years. As Mr. Akers has told as time and time again, you can’t get something good without getting some bad as well. The effects of technological advancement will definitely come with a cost, but in the end I believe it will be worth it.
I believe the most important of these advances will be the revolution in the medical field. Can you imagine a cure for cancer? Or fully-functioning prosthetics? Changes like these will change mankind forever.
Who knows what will be in store for us by 2050? I honestly have no clue, but many scientists are certain of what we can expect. I’ve read a lot about the future of technology, but what shocked me the most was an article I read that suggested the ability to make humans “immortal.” To do this, when you reached a certain age (old age I would assume) your brain would be “uploaded” into a computer so you could continue living without a body.
….I’m not sure how I feel about that one.

  26. For my report I am going to talk about The Revolution of Living Things along with the Issues in Biotechnology. To answer your first question, as a whole I definitely do not think it is an improvement for humanity. Then again I’m sure many people disagree with me. Everyone has their own opinion but I just don’t see how cloning, or the use of stem cells (whose source is human embryos) could be considered an improvement for humanity. I would consider it a misfortune. Cloning would just lessen our personal uniqueness and qualities that is God given. God made each and every one of us in his image, yet no one is alike. He made all of us with our own gifts and qualities and cloning just ruins our indifferences. Wouldn’t you just hate to be cloned? I know I would.
Obviously, if you haven’t already notice, my biggest concern would be cloning and the use of stem cells. First of all, we get stem cells from human embryos. That in itself is very concerning and selfish to those people who would take a human life in exchange for a stem cell. Just to sit and think about half the stuff that our world is coming up with today is sickening and mind blowing. In reverse, I will admit that many things are fascinating in a rather way yet still on the flip side, many things are very wrong especially to for us Christians.
If I had to make a prediction of what could change and advance in our world and what it would be like in 2050 I wouldn’t know where to begin. So many things could be a possibility and some things that will happen I’m sure no one could even imagine. Who knows, maybe by 2050 we’ll live like the Jetsons and have a world in the sky. Maybe we’ll have clones walking around that look just like us. Maybe everyone will have a floating cars or even cars that can fly. Maybe we’ll live like all the fat people on Wall.E. Who knows, right? I bet people 40 or 50 years ago never thought today there would be such a thing as Ipads or Xbox Kinects, or Wii’s , or Facebooks, or lights where you can just clap your hands and they’ll come on. Our world is technologically growing so fast theres no way to predict the future or picture it.

  27. I mean our differences, not indifferences.

  28. I decided to do my essay on the revolution of living things because I’ve always been interested in biology and the workings of the body. Biotechnology can cover a wide range of topics from helping control and cure disease to the possibility of cloning a human being. The advances in biotechnology are a must in today’s rapid growing society. As we grow are cities tend to get bigger and put out more waste. All this waste will in turn turn into disease and other hindrances to society. We will need new technologies to combat them. Now the biggest controversial subject in the future will most likely be about cloning. Personally I think that no human being should have the power to creat another human being out of his own will like that. However cloning can be a very useful thing if you don’t try and play god with it. For instance for transplant patients. Many people are on huge waiting lists for kidneys, hearts, and the like. Cloning in this instance can be used to grow a new heart specifically designed to go to someone who is in need for a new one. Other than ways like this I think that man should leave that subject alone. If I were to make an assumption by 2050 I would say that we will have many artificial sensors and other devises that will be implanted in us to help with “productivity.”

  29. I decided to do my essay about the revolution of materials and i think that the man is creating a new tools, machines and materials for our comfort and my prediction for 2015 is that we will have an easier life and everything will be better than the life now, maybe not better but much easier than now, like for example new technologies could help us for the planet and the ecosystem like the electric cars we are seeing right now but we will see alot of electric cars (I hope so) and everything will get better because of lazy people who doesn't want to work but in the other hand i think the sun will burn us and everything will be black and desertic without people maybe and that why we should take care of our world if we want to be here in 50 years.
I also think that the machines will replace our work and i dont really know what will happen with the economy of the world because if nobody works how can they get money?.
    so first question:
i think that could be an improvement if we use the new technologies in the right way and dont abuse of them just because lazy people don't want to work then if we use them in the wrong way, could be the end for us, for example a nuclear bomb.
    second question:
cultural threats, each culture is changing and we dont even notice the difference but everything is different in our society than 50 years ago so we will use our culture but maybe we can get better stuffs and everything in the future .

  30. Paco,
Good job on your report. When I was doing mine I didnt even think of using cloning for transplants and health issues. I do think that cloning would be good in that situation. But as you said, it could be used for good as long as people dont use it for their own power to try to play god. So very good job :)

  31. Private Elijah,
Good job on your report. Now, about cloning... It is definitely as scary thought. And as an improvement; yes, better disease control is a good idea but so many sicknesses today are cause from so much polution in the air that we breathe everyday. I totally agree with you though that as a whole I do not think it would be an improvement for humanity at all. Our lives are becoming more and more revovled around technology and im sure things are much more complex than they used to be. Personally, I wish things were more too but technology so far has been a huge success for our world. The problem is people who take it too far and get too caught up in wanting more and more and more. Very good Job!!

  32. Willi, I also think that the revolution has positive and negative aspects. The revolution changed not just the life of the people in the past but also today and in the future. Prizes and quality are things we have to think about before we buy stuff. If you want a product (like Furniture) in a high quality, and it is handmade you have to pay a lot, but if you are ok with buying machine produced furniture which is less expensive, you will have not the high quality you wanted. Good job. Keep up your work!!!

Paco, your essay was really interesting, but I really think that cloning is scary. I don’t like thinking about scientists who create people the way they want to. That’s just not natural and I don’t think it’s right. We will probably have cloning in the future, like you said, that could help people who are on a waiting list for internal organs. Good job!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Private Elijah, your essay was very good. I really enjoyed reading it, because it was easy to understand, and also informative. I totally respect your opinion.
In fact, I agree with you at one point. I think that the more scientists try to improve the world, the worse it gets. Of course not in every aspect, but like Mr. Akers said in class last week, for a new advancement you always give up things as well. So I am not all into new technology as well. A future that involves cloning also scares me. Many animals have already been cloned, but human are way more complex. I just hope that it won’t be possible.

    Jerome,
Good job on your essay. It was interesting to read your predictions for the year 2050. I personally wouldn’t like to live in a world where the sky is always dark because of the pollution. It could possibly happen, but I hope that people will rather get skinnier than fatter in the future.

  34. Guffy: Thanks for your thoughts on the Revolution of Living Things. I'm all for finding the cure for cancer. You mentioned a fully-functioning prosthetic.I so want to see soldiers have that available if needed. I agree with you on the controversy in some of the science experiments. It makes you wonder if some of those old black and white Frankenstein movies might really happen. If right morals aren't placed in the scientist that are developing the experiments it could get scary!
Eilien: Good Job on your report about the Revolution of Materials. I understand the importance of machines that make stuff cheaper.
I'm curious on the outcome of a society that is replace by machines. It's important for a person to have value placed on them. It's important to take pride in your job. Human nature does such extreme swings in society that it makes you wonder if we will get really obsessed by handmade craftsmanship.

  36. Dear christian,
I really enjoy to read your essay. I also like your introduction of your essay.
I think "The Revolution of living things" was a good choice, because it is an very important topic which will get
more important in several years. Especially our age has to think about it more to solve the next issues, because the
    biotechnology is our generation.
I agree with all your opinions and what your wrote. Good essay!

    Dear Eileen
your essay is very good and I like to read over it. I especial like your introduction which talks about negative and positive things/
I think it was a good idea to put stuff from some other revolutions of the past in your essay to compare.
Your prediction is quite good and I like it, but maybe a little bit to short. I also have to say that you have to do a prediction to
    2050 and not to 2015.:)

Ps: In my prediction I didn't talk about the year 2015 I talked about the year 2050:).

  37. THE REVOLUTION OF LIVING THINGS

Are the changes, as a whole, an improvement for humanity?
There are definitely some good changes that could take place, but as a whole, I would have to say no, the changes are not an improvement for humanity. These changes may be beneficial for the greediest of people, but for humanity it could really destroy a lot of opportunities and morals. Better disease control is really the only priority that I can tell. I think the things like stem cell research, cloning, and genetic mutation all show the natural fear of death.

By 2050, I predict that human cloning will definitely, successfully have already taken place. People are already cloning animals and creating all kinds of crazy mutations in secret.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read the article “The Revolution of Living Things” and two different changes that might take place stood out to me. First off, I noticed genetically modified foods. How can that possibly be healthy? I think a tomato should be grown in a garden with no genetic wacky woolly stuff messing with it. Chickens should be raised in a pen with no growth hormones. Genetically modifying food is pollution in its own way. Second, I saw cloning. Seriously? What good would that do us anyway? It’s scary. All I can think of is Star Wars and that weirdo guys who made an army of clones. Productive? I think not.

There are definitely some aspects of improvement that I can stand by. For example, better disease control. I think that is the only thing in the whole list of drastic advancements that speaks health to our society. Everything else scares me. Genetically modifying foods concerns me greatly. I do believe that the way these large food companies are producing their food is dangerous. I think it could lead to many different diseases we’ve never faced before if we continue to genetically modify food. It’s just wrong and makes me sick to my stomach.

I think that if technology continues to grow, we might lose our work ethic. As Americans, we have gotten really lazy. Computers and farm equipment do the hard work. Facebook gives us something to do when we’re bored. If it continues to progress at this speed, I really fear we’ll lose any motivation to be active and hard working. I think laziness could be our downfall.

  39. Private Elijah, cloning really scares me too! I really don’t see how it would benefit us anyone. I hope our world doesn’t end up looking like something straight out of the Tron movie. Wouldn’t that be awful? I would have loved to live around the 1800s. I’ve always thought the Ingles family from Little House on the Prairie had the ideal life. When you invent the time machine and head back to the 1900s, take me with you! I’ve always loved the 40’s so that would be quite fun.

Emily C., I really liked your essay. I pray that we don’t get caught up in technology in the future. I would hate to sit behind a computer screen all of my life. I also agree the cloning isn’t really beneficial and neither is genetic mutation. We just don’t know what could happen if we started messing with that stuff. I think we very well could end up with Wolverine or the mutant ninja turtles. :)

  40. Emily, I LOVED your essay. You made a good point about the privacy concerns that sites like Facebook can create, especially the new program that allows you to “check in.” I can see the temptation to post where you are every moment of the day, but even I know that’s asking for trouble. Good essay! (P.S. the tight pants statement made me laugh)
Camden, you’re essay was extremely well written. You presented your information very efficiently. I definitely look forward to seeing all the advances science will bring to the medical community. Good job.

  41. Private Elijah,
Great essay, your essay was very informative, lots of information. I also think its pretty scary knowing we could be cloning human within such a short period of time, but I would rather be living now then in the 1800's. Good Essay though!

  43. Biggin,
Great essay man! The quote “Societies that are reluctant to change will have problems” is so true. What would we in todays society do without the constant change of material technology do? Everyone is always looking for the better phone, or we want that next gen consoles to play our video games on. Long story short, we are complete slaves to the increase of technology. Also I love your statement “Time will tell.” This is a very true factor with every single thing that comes out today. What might seem like an amazing idea on paper, when put in actual effect may turn out a flop.

    Billy tha Squid,
Good essay! I also did mine on biotechnology. Like you I see cloning as the main concern. Personally I believe that we should not try and create another human life in such ways. That is in God’s hands alone. Although I do think that we can use it to grow organs for transplant patients.

  44. Dear Morgan,
I really like your essay. I agree a lot with your first paragraph like its so true like people don't way the pros and cons of all of these things. I don't believe that people e get the concept of how many people have access to there information for example on facebook. They don't think twice about what they say.
As I said before: Good Job!

  45. Dear Private Elijah,
Good job on your report. If I think about cloning, my mind always tells me that it is very scary and dangerous. But I also believe that it has its good part too. Better disease control is a good idea but so many sicknesses today are cause from so much polution in the air that we breathe everyday. I agree with you that as a whole thing I dont think it would be an improvement for humanity at all. Our lives are becoming more and more revovled around technology and im sure things are much more complex than they used to be. 46. In my opinion I don’t feel that things like cloning and genetic mutation are very beneficial for us. I honestly think that are quite unnecessary and could potentially be dangerous. I think that we should be investing our time in more important technology that can benefit us in the long run like finding a way to cure cancer or other deadly diseases rather than risking more people’s lives with unnecessary things like cloning. Also I don’t see how genetically modifying our food is good in any way. Why waste precious time on making genetically enhanced food when we already have perfectly fine ways of getting food. Again this is just a waste to me. I did like the idea of the diseases control. That definitely could be very helpful to us unlike those useless things I already mentioned.
I had to think hard about how to answer the question about 2050. For some reason I always picture floating cars or something ridiculous. Really the possibilities are limitless. Think about all the changes that have gone on just since the 70’s. I bet they had no idea what to expect 40 years later. I guess the only thing I can think of is that clothing will be most likely even more risqué than it already is (if that’s even possible). Entertainment will most likely be MUCH different than it is now.

  47. Late as it is - I have decided to write on the Revolution of Living Things. The article talks about increasing the quantity and quality of life AND human cloning. If 2015 brings a better quality of life for people so that they can live longer and live more comfortably then I see that is a big plus. This can be done through advances with medicines, "disease therapy" etc. We are already a people that is living longer. God gives us the knowledge and wisdom to make these advances. I do not see this as a bad thing.

Cloning is a different matter. God has designed us all uniquely and as individuals. I believe it would be morally wrong to clone humans in any way or form. I am also against stem cell research that uses fetus'. Maybe I should care more about their using animals but I would much rather they do that than using aborted fetus'. That is just wrong.

Injected animals with antibiotics and steroids to affect how they will look in the grocery store does not seem healthy. I know that is going on right now and I wonder how that could be healthy.

The advances in this world is four years is frightening in some ways. I cannot imagine what it will be like in 2050. Who knows maybe people will find a way to live to be 150 years. But I just don't like the sound of it!

  48. Daniel Gonzalez - This was a great essay on The Revolution of Materials. You are right that things like the electric car would be good for our ecosystem - and the price of gas is so high that would really help. As for machines replacing humans - I have to agree that this is a very bad thing. It is already happen in certain factories. Companies take jobs from Americans now and go into poor countries because they don't have to pay higher pay. Replacing those works will machines will make things even worse than they are now.

The atomic bomb is a real thing. If technology makes it to where more people can produce this bomb what a disaster that will be. I believe there are some things that don't need to be advanced and this bomb is one of them. Great essay.

  49. Paco - a great essay on the REvolution of Living THings. I do not think that I agree with you on cloning even in respect to an emergency - liking having organs on hand for transplanting. I dont know - maybe it would be okay. But it just seems wrong. Isn't that playing God? God gives life and he takes away life. If it is someones time to go then it is. I just don't think cloning is right in any form right now that I can see. It is scarey and it seems like we are playing God when we do it. A great essay.
