Homework 7, Due December 10

This will be the last homework assignment of the semester! Congratulations on nearing the halfway point. I hope the class has taught you valuable information about our western culture and caused you to think more deeply about our present and future. This week we will continue our study of the Renaissance, specifically focusing on the tremendous art work that was created. I would like you to begin by reading an overview of the period found at the link http://www.learner.org/interactives/renaissance/ and comparing the Renaissance period to today. How are we different? How are we alike?

Then look at the artwork found at http://history.hanover.edu/courses/art/111ren.html . Select a single piece of artwork that appeals to you and introduce it in your essay. Who was the artist and when was the work created? Where was the work created/where is it today (if it is mobile)? Why does this particular piece appeal to you?

The requirements for this assignment are exactly the same as those for all preceding assignments. God bless!

  1. when faced with the questions of how are we alike and how are we different... i think the first thing that comes to mind on how we are alike is, well we too have the idea of religion and God is something we still have today that we will have forever. although there is one difference that is slight but at the same time pretty noticable... back then people are forced to work night and day to support their famalies... there is no doubt that today people still have to make sacrifices but the government has so many assist programs that not many families have to do without in america.

now for my piece of art work... i picked Sandro Botticelli's Madonna of the Magnifocat. this piece of art work really caught my attention it had alot of detail and the colors made a perfect blend... i could really feel the mood that was being set. the details in the faces of the people standing around really caught my attention. i thing this painting really portrays many things you just have to pay close attention.
this is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master sandro botticelli created in 1481, It is now in the Uffizi, Florence.
The piece of art apparently portrays the virgin mary being crowned by two angels. The child Jesus is holding the pomegranate, which is a symbol of the Resurrection. The painting is said to symbolize the family of Piero de' Medici, lord of Florence from 1464. it is said that the people standing around mary and Jesus are there to represent different members of the lord's family. i really like this piece of art work its quite inspiring. :)

  2. When I think of differance between now and the Middle Ages, the feudal system is the first thing that pops into my head. Now-a-days, the feudal system is not in place, that I know of, and certainly not here in America (though, of course, that could change. Everything always changes, right?) The feudal system, as we have learned, is basically when peasants lived on the lord's (the land owner's) property and worked the land in return for a church, houses, food, clothing, and protection. Of course, the lord wouldn't build or sew anything with his own hands (as Mr. Akers pointed out in class) but the people basically did all of that for themselves. I for one am glad that we don't have the feudal system today because never being able to better youself doesn't sound like a good lifestyle at all.

For the painting I chose The Kiss of Judas by Giotto di Bondone. Though this picture is probably the most awkward picture of all, it stuck out to me because of a few things. One, it is very bright. Whenever I think of the betrayel, I consider it a very dark night with very dull clothing. In this picture, the clothing is very bright and the torches light up the sky. The second thing that stuck out to me is that the artist shows Peter cutting off the servant's ear. Although in the Bible it says that peter used a sword, the artist shows a knife, which I gueess the sword could have been as small as a knife, but it's not how I pictured it. Of course, the main thing that stuck out was the awkward part where Judas is betraying Jesus with a kiss. Matthew 26:49 says "Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him." Whenever I read that, I figured that it was a kiss on the cheek, as is the tradition of some cultures. However, Giotto's painting is not a kiss on the cheek, but a more awkward version, awakard to those of us today at least. This painting is in Arena Chapel in Padua.

  3. The Renaissance seems like a very interesting time period. In some ways the Renaissance period is similar to today in a sense that there was a lot of creativity and ingenuity. The population was more prosperous and this period was a time of learning and growth in many ways. Artist and musicians gained more freedom and individualism. In the present times artists and musicians are growing rapidly and becoming more creative with their ideas, in some ways this is good but can also be bad. In many ways the Renaissance period contrasts with today. First, during the renaissance sacred music still had great importance rather than today where most people focus on more secular music. This time period had much effect on today. Although people during the renaissance became aware of mathematics and science, they believed in werewolves, rainfalls of blood, and death predicting comets. That’s pretty crazy. In most ways, this rebirth of society was good but not in every way. During the renaissance there was a rise in humanism and went from being an age of unquestionable faith to one of beliefs in reason and scientific inquiry.
The artwork before and during the Renaissance focused a lot on physical appearance and their architecture was brilliant in design and color. I had two favorites from the site Mr. Akers gave us to choose from: Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, and Arena (Scrovegni) Chapel by Giotto. I’m going to focus more on the Arena Chapel. The layout and color of the frescoes is simply amazing and quite magnificent. The painting of this building began when Giotto was forty in 1305. In all, there are 34 individual scenes. The Arena Chapel is still standing in Padua, Italy today.

  5. What differences are there between now and the Middle Ages? First, there has always been this
idea of religion. Whether is be the True God or false gods that we have seen created in history
and that are still being created today. For example, when we study Greek Mythology and read the literature of that day, I always think, “Wow, they were so in need of God.” They wanted something to live for so they created characters that they ended up worshiping.

I looked at all these art pieces and immediately all the colours caught my attention. I picked Maesto Madonna to talk about more specifically. The colour and detail put into this painting blew me away. I, personally, love the kind of art that keeps your eyes constantly moving and you find more and more detail every time you look at it, and this painting certainly does this for me. This painting is beautiful.

  6. Elizabeth, I must say that, yes, i am also thankful that we don't have the feudal system today. I can understand why people may think it is a better way of life because you are promised a home and food, but you are pretty much providing for yourself and always under someone, So, i don't sounds very appealing to me. I also liked the Kiss of Judas painting. As you pointed out it is quite awkward, but yet the detail boggled me mind. I didn't really see Peter cutting off the man's ear and i always pictured it as a sword rather than a knife as well. But i love how the artist put his take on that in this painting. Great essay, i enjoyed readng it. Good job!

Jess, I liked your essay! You and i both pointed out religion on the simularities of today and during the Middle Ages. I just thought i'd throw that out there.. So... Yeah.. Great essay!

  8. I can only imagine what times were like during the Renaissance. I think there was a lot of revelation and joy among some people. I also think there was a lot of sorrow and grieving. During the Renaissance was when the Black Death occurred. It really was a tragedy. Thank goodness we aren’t battling the Black Death today.

Another thing to be thankful for would be living in a democracy rather than under the feudal system. Imagine being totally dependent on your boss for everything you need to survive: food, water, and shelter. We live in a society where we can make a living independently and we can pursue the career of our interest instead of obligation. I think that there are some similarities between then and now. For example, we have a desire to learn. Whether we’d admit it or not, without school we would be bored.

I chose the Lamentation over Jesus by Giotto. It’s a very different painting. The colors are brighter than expected, but they still have a sense of darkness about them. Another thing that fascinates me is the angels flying over Jesus. One angel seems to have something blue coming out of its mouth which I thought was odd. I considered the idea that the artist might have made a mistake, but I’m not art historian so I could be wrong. The thing that stood out to me the most was the halo things around some of the people’s heads. I wonder why they are there and what they mean. I also wonder why others don’t have “halos.” Perhaps the people with halos were the ones who believed Jesus as Lord. This painting is in the Arena Chapel in Padua.

  9. The Renaissance was a time period in which the art really changed. Europe emerged from the stagnation of the Middle Ages and experienced a time of financial growth. Artistic, Social and political work, turned in to a new and never experienced directions.
I liked the artwork from Giotto, Arena (Scrovegni) Chapel. His real name is Giotto di Bondne, and he was born in 1266 and died January 8, 1337. He was an Italian painter and also architect from Florence in the late Middle Ages. He is considered the first in lane of great artists from the Italian Renaissance. His masterwork is the decoration of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua (also called the Arena Chapel). It was completed around 1305. It showes the life of the virgin Mary and the life of Christ. It is one of the works of the Early Renaissance.
I liked this artwork a lot, because of the beautiful colors the artist used. It makes this work something special. Even if you could think it is maybe "to much", because of all the details. But I think that is just smething you think when you look first, but at the second look, you realize how much work the artist must have spent to drew all this. This artwork is amazing!!!

  10. "The Renaissance was an age in which artistic, social, scientific, and political thought turned in new directions."

I think it‘s hard to tell how we are different or how we are alike compared to the Renaissance period. Still today our society is changing and developing itself. You can‘t really tell many clear differences because there are still changes going on, for example the rights for gay people. Many people think it should be allowed that they can marry, although the Bible says something against it. In the Renaissance period I think, nobody would have these thoughts. That is an example how the morals and opinions have changed after the Renaissance and it‘s going to be a continuous process.

One of the clearest differences is definitely the religion. In the Renaissance period the religion was very important, now in Europe most people don‘t really care anymore.

I think we have together the strive for new things. For new discovery’s, scientific knowledge, new challenging projects and generally new things. I think most of the people know, that we still can improve our life style, products, energy sources and etc. Before the Renaissance period in the Stagnation the people really thought they have everything what is possible and thought they know everything. Today there is probably nobody who would say our society already knows everything and can’t improve anymore.

For my piece of artwork I chose Leonardo da Vinci’s picture “The Last Supper”. It was created in 1498 in Milan and is now on north wall of the refectory (dining hall) of the Dominican church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. It was made for the Dutch Ludovico Sforza.

  11. For my essay I am going to start off by talking about the Renaissance and how they are alike and different compared to today’s period. A way the Renaissance is like the time period today is the economic stagnation they had a time period where there economy was bad and low and just things were not going very well for them. Because out economy today is also very bad and very low and really not getting any better and probably will not any time soon. A difference is there financial growth. Financial growth is a growth or a increase on money or fortune. Our time period today I going the opposite way. Most people are atleast, our economy is so low and bad that no one has the money to do pretty much anything because everything has become so expensive. Another thing that is different but yet alike is the nobles and peasants. We still have poor people and rich people. The only difference is now our poor people owe and do less for the more wealthier people. They all kinds take there own problems and job and deal with. If there are any cases of someone doing something for someone else its normally the rich helping the poor. For the last part of my essay I choose the art piece The Ognisanti Madonna it was made by Giotto di bondone in 1310. I choose this art piece because I think it is very pretty and detailed!

  13. The Renaissance was a great time of change in Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. “Renaissance” is French and literally means “Rebirth”.

So how are we different from the Renaissance period? Well, I think one of the most important differences is our societal structure. We have a democracy with a president; we don’t have a king anymore. Not the wealthy nobles rule, but the smart and hard working people. The merchant class has become stores like Walmart, and is not the middle class anymore, but the lower class. We are much more advanced in our economy. We import and export goods much faster and efficiently, with the help of means of transport like planes, trucks and trains. There are a lot more job opportunities and a bigger variety of work. Also, our medical care and knowledge about the human body has advanced a lot, so that we can cure almost every disease. Diseases like the Bubonic Plague wouldn’t have a chance to destroy today’s society anymore.

How are we alike? One of the main similarities between our time periods is the focus on our studies. We mainly focus on humanistic studies, not on ecclesiastics.
We have banks, schools, and universities, which were introduced during the Renaissance. We import and export goods; we have books in our mother tongue. Of course, there are still Christians, we still have the Bible, and we still have people with different opinions about it.

For the piece of artwork I chose Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting “The Last Supper”. He worked on it from 1494 to 1498. He created it for his patron Duke Ludovico Sforza and the painting covers (and has always covered) the back wall of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. It represents the scene of The Last Supper from the final days of Jesus when he announces that one of his Twelve Apostles would betray him. The picture shows the reaction of the disciples to this.

I chose this painting because I’ve heard many rumors and controversies about it and I wanted to learn more about it. For example, John is painted very effeminate and many people believe that the person drawn shows Mary Magdalene. Also, there has been some argument about the owner of the hand holding the knife. Is it John, is it Peter, or is it a separate, obscure person you can’t see?

I personally think that people sometimes interpret too much in artworks like this. It is an intriguing, well-painted piece of art. I don’t think that Da Vinci meant to scare people or give reason for us to interpret it wrongly by drawing this famous Bible scene.

  14. Yayy!! :) The last homework for the semester! Akers you shoudl definitely keep my suggestion in mind :) ....

Anyway on the homework now... In this homework we were asked to explain the differences and similarities of the Renaissance and today. The first question is how are we different today from back then. Well, first we do not have a feudal system any more. That disappeared sometime not long after the crusades. Back then the bubonic plague was going around which killed thousands. At that time they didn't have the natural resistence or medical means and knowledge to fight it like we do today. We also have an established montetary system and banking system. And in that time although things were changing and being invented and made easier and education was becoming more available as well as books and exotic things that they had never had before, it was definitely more diffincult to make a living and get good things and do our jobs and get an education now. With all the inventions we have now we can do so much more than they did. At that time they were just begging to rediscover begin a new chapter whereas we are moving right along and coming up with new and improved inventions all the time. And also the pope ( the religious leader) was more or less running things but here in America we have a separartion of state and government. Also we have a democracy instead of a monarchy.

How are we alike today? Well, i guess you could say thast the things that they were establishing back then is much of what we have today like banks or the middle class or the pope being slowly cut off from control of the state. We have many of those thingsa today so what they began we have now. Also they were really becoming intersted in learning as we are today.

The artwork that I chose was the sistine chapel. I was originally going to pick another piece that I hadn't heard of before but when I got down to the pictures of the sistine chapel I was amazed. To be honest I had heard of it but had never seen a picture of it until today. The artwork is unbelievable! It intrigues so much for a couple reasons... One, it is so very colorful and detailed. Second it amazes me how he got all of that up there and how patient he had to have been. I probably would have painted the first person and then have gotten fed up with it but he spent over four years painting that ceiling! Another reason this work of art intrigues me is the many different stories it tells. Its like a mystery. The artist's name was
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni or more comonly know as just Michelangelo. This work of art was created in the high Renaissance between 1508 and 1512. The work was created in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican city. The capitol of Italy. That is where it is still today.

  15. Renaissance is french for "rebirth". Rebirth is exactly what happened in Europe in the fourteenth to sixteenth century.
The Gutenberg press was invented in 1445. Up to that point all books were hand made and written by hand.I see the same correlation with the internet, and as our need for information grows so does our need for more internet services.
I noticed that as more books were printed there was more influence of humanism. I see the world bent in the same direction. As we emphasize man, his intellect and life on earth, the further we stray from our biblical roots.
The difference between the Renaissance and today is the speed by which everything is done.
The painting I choose was The Virgin, Child, and St. Anne. It was commissioned as the high altar piece for the Church of Santissima Annuziata in Florence. The work was done around 1508.
After looking at all of the other pictures I choose this one because it's not creepy. The details are more realistic. It invites you into the picture. It makes you think about what everyone is doing. It's hanging in the Paris Louvre. I found Freud's comments on this picture very funny. He tried to psycho analyze Leonardo Da Vinci. It really wasn't believable!

  16. At first I wasn't thinking the renaissance and our period had a lot in common. But I was began reding the aricle on learner.com, I realized we didn't change that much, and we still function the same way.
First of all the relation between nobles (or rich people today) and the middle class or the pesants who will be normal or poor people. Most of the time, the rich people are the ones who are at the head of the companies and the workers are the middle class people. It was the same with the Lords and pesant at the time of the Renaissance. But the "pesants" of our day don't live under a Lord's authority. They don't have anything to wait for from the lord, but the people in the time of the renaissance did. Something else that's alike to our time is the diffusion of the deaseases. We all live so close to each other the plagues can spread out very quickly like it did with the bubonic plague called the Black Death.
A piece of Art that I think is pretty interesting will be the "Kiss of Judas" by Giotto. It's in Sthe Chapel Scrovegni (Arena) who's near Padua. It was created between 1302 and 1306. I think it's pretty interresting.

  18. Could you imagine what it would be like to live during the renaissance? It would be totally and inexplicably different. Some things would be the same, and some wouldn’t. The people during Renaissance Europe lived a life of simplicity they also had a hunger for something more than a simple quality of life. We today as the American people hunger for greatness, and strive for fortune and fame. Some don’t I know that, but the Americans have a reputation for hunger of plenty. But maybe that might not be a bad thing; every human has that desire to rise above and to not fit in. I know we do because that was made into our being. Even though it might not be an obvious “rising,” because sometimes, even the humility of our hearts could be that rocket to greatness. The Europeans during this tyme of the renaissance lived simple lives and didn’t need anything else. They had protection for serving on the lord’s land. We as a people today still have an economic system sort of like the ones of Europe to post Renaissance Europe. We have the “Noble” the “Middle Man” and the “Peasant”. But we don’t exactly work the way they did. Today we have a worker rights, and we don’t serve our bosses like the Peasants served the lord. These people would work from sunrise until day break. We today complain if we work a six hour shift without a thirty minute break and a couple of ten minute breaks.

The “Kiss of Judas” was painted by Giotto during 1304 to 1306. This painting resides in Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. This piece of work stands out to me because it betrays Judas as courageous. He isn’t too scared to go up and show to the Romans, who the Lord is, and Jesus looks back into Judas’s eyes- like he is searching (which he already knows why Judas is betraying him) but it seems like Jesus is staring into Judas’s eyes because he knows the fate and the destiny that he must now walk into. It’s basically like he is asking himself and maybe trying to find the answer in the other mans eyes, “Is it now the tyme?” But we all know that he already knew. I Lovedd it!

  19. The Renaissance , the European Renaissance of the 14th–17th centuries. was a cultural movement that profoundly affected European intellectual life in the early modern period in the modern Italy its influence affected literature, philosophy, art, politics, science, religion, and other aspects of intellectual inquiry. Renaissance scholars employed the humanist method in study subject Italian Renaissance artists were among the first to paint secular scenes, breaking away from the purely religious art of medieval painters I’m going to start the essay about The Last Supper ,I think It’s one of an amazing paint and one of the most famous from Leonardo da Vinci .It covers the back wall of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. That represents the scene of The Last Supper from the final days of Jesus as narrated in the Gospel of John 13:21 .Another painting that I really interested in is Sistine Chapel ,it is the most famous chapel in the Apostolic Palace that the officially residence of the Pope in Vatican City. It is famous for its architecture and its decoration by the greatest Renaissance artists including Michelangelo, Raphael, Bernini, and Sandro Botticelli. They are all amazing artists .And both of this architect are my favorites because they are really neat and interesting.

  21. The Renaissance, French for rebirth, is a very interesting time period. A lot went on in this time period like the invention of the Gutenberg Press in 1445. This greatly extend thing such as religion, up to that point bibles were rare because everything was written by hand. So this greatly extended religion and even learning, because they had more books to, and more of a opportunity to learn. This is just one thing that happened during the Renaissance, there are many more.
One way we are still alike, is the feudal system. I've read some of the other essays, and people are like wouldn't it be horrible if you had to completely rely on your employer for everything, but you do have to rely on your employer for everything basically, without a job you have no money and without money you can't have a house, insurance, or food. When you think about it we are like a feudal system, we have wealthy people(upper class people) who own a business and employ workers(lower class people).
One way we are different is medical technology; when they had a pandemic of the Bubonic Plague. Now we don't have pandemics, and if we do we work fast to combat the virus or whatever sickness it may be.
The painting I chose The Sistine Chapel, painted by Michelangelo. I chose this because it's amazing, but it's even more amazing how he painted that, he had to lay on his back to paint the ceiling, and to do that for around five years. This art was created in the Renaissance(1508-1512). It was created in the Sistine Chapel in the capitol of Italy, Vatican city. It is still there today.

  22. The Renaissance. A time period of creativity, ingenuity, and health. Artists and musicians gained their own identity. They become more unique. Like in this time period the artists and musicians if today continue to grow and new styles of painting and music come around all the time. However unlike then the music of today is focused more on the secular side. Most people tend to not listen to as much of the religious music. The people then tended to believe in myths and stories that were completely ludicrous. They thought that vampires werewolves and blood raining from the sky. These are the same people who came up with the ideas of science and mathematics. Yeah crazy stuff. Next time youre in math class tell mrs renner we are learning stuff that a guy that believed in werewolves came up with.

I chose the Sistine Chapel. This beautiful work of art was done by Michelangelo. Its just amazing how he was able to paint all of that. There are thousands and thousands all little paintings everywhere. Imagine the time and patience it took to do all of that. This piece of art is simply amazing. I can imagine myself walking in the room and just look up and stare at it for hours. Everywhere there are amazing pictures. You probably could even begin to understand the complexity that he had to put into this play to be able to that.

  23. Abbie,
I agree with what you said about how we should be thankful we are living under a democracy instead of the feudal system. Though our democracy isn't perfect, far from it if you ask me, it is still better the nliving under the feudal system where you had no choice of what you want to be, where to go, and so on. As for the painting you chose, I like your take on it. I have also always wondered about the halos, and I agree and think that they represent those who believe in Jesus. GOod essay :)

    PAco,
I found your essay funny. I love how you talked about how the crazy people who believed in werewolves and the like are the ones who came up with math and science stuff. When you think about it, that does make since in the way that because they were crazy werewolf people, they came up with crazy math formulas that make no since!! haha Good essay!!

  24. Essay from Jerome,

This week I will tell something about the Renaissance. I think the Renaissance was a very important
and a very exciting time, which the people have enjoyed
because it was a time in which artistic, social, scientific, and political really changed.

The majority of the paintings of Renaissance art are altarpieces and frescoes,
religious content, which were painted for churches and which the religious figure was humanized.

The architecture was based on simple floor plans in the ideal geometric forms like the square or circle.
Were prepared having components such as columns, pilasters, capitals and triangular pediment.

Another important point is the dark time of the black plague. I believe it was a terrible time for the folk, because in this time they
hadn't the medical equipment to protect himself. And right now Im very glad that we dont have to fight against the black death.

I chose the artwork Mona Lisa. I think that is one of the most famous oil painting by Leonardo da Vinci.
He probably painted in the spring of 1503 to the summer of 1505.
The current location of the painting in the Louvre in Paris.
I think this artwork has a lots of inspiration.

Leonardo sold the picture just before his death to King Francis I,
who kept it in the castle of Amboise.
In the following years, the painting came to Fontainebleau, Paris and finally to Versailles in the collection of Louis XIV
After the French Revolution, the picture got a home in the Louvre. Napoleon took it from there and hung it in his bedroom.
After the exile of Napoleon came back the Mona Lisa in the Louvre.

  25. Paco,
Good Job. I also thought the Sistine Chapel was quite magnificent in its beauty, complexity, and creativity. I think it’s pretty funny how you said that you would walk in a room there and just stare up for hours. I could see you doing that too but I probably would do the same. Michelangelo obviously was an extremely talented man who was very artistic and his creativity was all incredible. Very Good job Paco!!

  26. Abbie,
I agree that the Renaissance must have been very hard a lot of people considering all of the deaths the occurred because of the Bubonic plague. We should all be very thankful that we aren’t battling any plague like that today. Also, I am thankful for our democracy instead of the feudal system people lived under back then. And I like that you said Whether we admit it or not, without school we would be bored. I find that very true haha. Great Job Abbie!!

  27. Abbie, good job on your essay! I agree with you that we should be happy to have such a good kind of government nowadays. We have a democracy and not a feudal system. The biggest problem with the feudal system was, in my opinion, that one inherited the social status from their parents and there was no way to change that. And also we can be thankful for such an advanced knowledge of medical care, so that we don’t have to live in fear of the Black Death and other horrible diseases.

Biggin, I really liked the part in your essay when you talked about how we stray from our biblical roots as we emphasize man, and his intellect and life on earth.
I think that is true, because the more humans invent and the more they discover, the more they realize how much power they have over the earth. There is no need for God anymore, because they are their own little gods.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Private Elijah,
I disagree with what you said about how we no longer live in a feudal system society. I think that in a way we are still like a feudal system, because we do rely on some form of employment. This means you rely on the person who employs you for money.Because without money you can't afford things such as food and a home. I liked the painting you chose The Kiss of Judas by Giotto di Bondone. It is a great painting.

I liked your essay and I agree with what you said about we haven't changed as much as people think. We still operate under something similar or like the feudal system, like the rich people are the nobles and the middle to lower class are the common people and peasants. I also like your painting the Kiss of Judas by Giotto; This is a great painting. Great Essay!

  30. The renaissance was a very inspiring and a interesting period of time. It was a great cultural move ment that began in Italy in the 1300's and spread all throughout Europe, to England, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and many other countries through out Europe in the 1400's. The renaissance kept spreading until its end in 1600. The people were a slightly more prosperous than the people of today, and there was a rise in artistry and music as the people gained more freedom and individualism.

For the piece of art work that appealed to me, I have selected The Scrovegni (arena) Chapel , near Padua. This piece of artwork was designed by Giotto. This design in this chapel was finished around 1305. The Arena Chapel is a church building located in Padua, Veneto, Italy.; and it is still loceted there today. The pictures that were drawn on the wall of the chapel arena are biblical and are in three main categories, the life of Joachim, the life of the Virgin, and the life of Christ; and in all there are 34 different individual scenes. Another one of the reasons that this piece of artwork appeals to me, is its bright colors of gold and blue and red and white and black.

  31. Billy tha Squid ,
I really like your essay. My favorite part is the one that u talked about how the things changed in The Renaissance time period, it was a really interesting time period. It had greatly extend about religion the point about bibles and I also was the last extended about the education because they had more writing stuff and books ,they just liked more opportunity to study. And the The Sistine Chapel is my favorite painting too that painted by Michelangelo.it's an amazing paint in Vatican city,Italy. =) good job !!

    Stella ,
I loved your essay I agreed with you that one of the most important difference is our societal structure. Because there were classesof people like you said The merchant class has become stores like Walmart, there are a lot more ways to shipping in our economy like in these days we import and export goods a lot faster than the past , with a lot of the transportation .And the painting “The Last Supper” was the one that I chose too. It covered dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy.

  32. Alexandria, I liked your comments on the Renaissance period. "Artist and musicians gained more freedom and individualism." For an artist being able to have freedom to create as an individual makes for great growth in that field. You can tell in the Renaissance art work as well as the music that the church had much influence in how they themed their art work. It's amazing how people held on to their superstitions and took a century or two to get through it.
Morgan, I enjoyed your piece on the Sistine Chapel. I'm like you, I was amazed when I saw all the art work. I wonder how many people came to the chapel just to see the art work. I'm not sure how it's illuminated today, but by flickering candle light how long did it take for people to take it all in? It's a miracle with all the wars that have gone on in Italy that all that art work can still be seen today.

  33. Lovely Nang,
Your essay was short, quick, and to the point. I Loved it. The European Renaissance was something that would forever change Europe and even parts of America’s heritage today. Everything change when the Renaissance swept across Europe. Good Job!!
    Beautiful Elena,
Your essay was quite interesting also. You showed the aspect of how we did not change. Yes, still today we operate in the work place kind of like we did in the middle ages. Some things changed and some others did not. I also chose the “Kiss of Judas” as my art piece to write about. A very powerful picture don’t you think? Good job on your essay lovee!!
    Intellectual Michael,
“I noticed that as more books were printed there was more influence of humanism. I see the world bent in the same direction. As we emphasize man, his intellect and life on earth, the further we stray from our biblical roots.” You know this is something that I have never thought of before. It is a very interesting subject, and I could not agree with you anymore. Great essay!

  34. Emily Lynn, Great Essay! I really never thought about this difference we had we the people as that time and the fact that they NEEDED a god or even several Gods. I don't think any of them ever heard about a Messiah that could come and save them. I guess only the Jewish knew about it and it's a little sad that they didn't share it.

I also think all of their paintings were beautiful and still are today. It's just amazing all this patience they had to do such a detailed and wonderful work. I really liked looking at them and also something that I think is awesome and we need to do again is painting scenes of the Bible. Even if we can not show the glory and majesty of the lord, I think we should do like they did and use all the things God placed in us to show other people who he is.
    Once again, Great essay!

Eileen, Great essay!! Yes, thing that changed the most inthe period of time of the Renaissance was definitly the art. They did such amazing works and I think we can say it was the "renaissance" of art, the rebirth of art.
You did a really great job describing this piece of art.
    Once again, very good essay!

  35. Dear Alexandria Grace,
you did a really good job. I really like you introduction, how you explained the Rennaissance
thus, each can understand the topic.
I agree with everything. I think that is one of the most important things of the Renaissance
with the population was more prosperous and this period was a time of learning and growth in many ways.
I like your artwork choice from Arena Chapel. In the first moments it sounds great and it is not to imagine
that the church is still there on the same place. I love it if the layout and the colores are simply amazing and still quite magnificent

    Dear Emily Lynn,
your essay is very sweet, i mean it is very short, but still very good and I really like to read it. You did a good job
I think it is very good to ask a question in the very beginning to have a topic.
I also like that you put the religion in your essay. That is a very important point.
It is very good to put your own opinion in the essays it makes it more lively, I mean like more exciting

  36. Stella, I liked your essay a lot. Not that you wrote much more than we were supposed to, you also answered all the given questions very well. The article you wrote had good infornation. I liked the way you told us about Leonardo Da Vinici's artwork "The Last Supper". You described a lot of details, which you not just see without paying attention! You were critical, which is always good and you represented your opinion. I like this artwork too, and it fascinates me always that people really interpret a lot in artworks from the past. Like you said, Leonardo Da Vinci was probably not even up to scare people with his work!
    Keep up your good work.

  37. Paco, your essay was good. You told us a lot about the Renaissance itself. You had good information. You chose the same artwork I did, and I was also very amazed by this painting. You told us about the artist and you described his work very well.
    Keep up your good work

  38. In many ways, today is similar AND different to the time of the Renaissance.

One of the biggest differences, I think, would be the feudal system under which the people of the Middle Ages lived. The feudal system is when the rich supplied land, homes, food, etc. for the poor in return for their work. The way that's set up makes it almost impossible for the poor to ever progress in any sort of way. You pretty much would have been destined to the life your parents lived no matter what social rank they were from: rich would always be rich, poor would always be poor.

Today, similarly to then, we spend a lot of time in our lives on studies; with schools and universities.

    About the art...
Honestly, I really don't like much of any it. It all almost looks the same to me with the same-type looking people with the same creepy facial expressions. Despite my opinion, I chose The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci. It was painted in 1498 and covers the back wall of the dining hall at the monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. This painting displays the scene of The Last Supper from the final days of Jesus as narrated in the Gospel of John 13:21, when Jesus announces that one of his Twelve Apostles would betray him.

  39. Abbie,
I like what you said about how we should be thankful for living under a democracy instead of the feudal system. I don’t think that our democracy system is perfect but it is still one of the best forms (if not the best) forms of government out there. I’m so glad that we are not living under the feudal system to. If we were still using that system there would be little to none progress of our technology.

    Emily,
Good job on your essay! I like how you mentioned that we always have that idea of religion. I to have noticed when we read all the greek myths that these people were pretty stupid and so in need of someone to worship that they made up ridiculous stories to explain things. No matter how stupid these sounded you can not however say that the people themselves were stupid. They were a very smart people. The myths had to take very imaginative minds to come up with.

  40. to billy the squid, I really liked your essay about the renaissance and i your research on the sistene chapel was very interesting. I did not know very much about the sistene chapel before i read your essay, but now i now a little bit more about it, such as that it was painted by the great artist Michelangelo, or that he had to lay on his back for five years painting it on the ceiling of the sistene chapel. and i agree with you, it is a very amazing painting, and i personally like how there are many different scenes, and all of the color that he used in it as well. But great job on your essay billy the squid, i really liked your essay, and your choice of painting.
