March 28-April 1, April 4-8

Hello! Because so many students will be travelling this week and next week is spring break, please enjoy a two-week hiatus from history homework! I will, however, offer an extra-credit assignment for those of you who have a desire to improve your grade. For 5 bonus points added to your test grade write an essay about Joan of Arc and post it as a comment (remember to cite your sources). You may do a second essay for the same amount of credit; research the wife of any American president and share your findings in an essay. These must be posted before midnight, April 10, for any credit.

A word of caution - after two weeks with no history homework over the Christmas vacation some of you had a hard time getting back into the habit of keeping up with your assignments. Don't let it happen this time!

  1. I'm writing my essay on Joan of Arc also known as the Maid of Orleans. She lead the English invasion of France in the Hundred Years War.She was born to Jacques Darc and his wife Isabelle de Vouthon in the small town Domremy, she was third of five children. When Joan was near twelve years of age she started hearing voices, she believed to be sent by God, which told her that her divine mission was to free her country from English and help dauphin gain the French throne. By 1429 English with the help of their Burgundian allies occupied Paris and all French land north of Loire. Joan eventually convinced the Dauphin himself of her calling. In May 1429 Joan led the troops to a miraculous victory over the British. Charles VII was later crowned the king of France on July 17, 1429 after the battle of Orleans. On May 30, 1431, after being captured in 1430, was burned at the stake. Joan of Arc died at the age of 19.

  5. Saint Joan of Arc or The Maid of New Orleans is a national heroine to the nation of France and a saint to the catholic people. Joan of Arc was a peasant girl who claimed divine guidance. Joan of Arc was a leader in the French army and led the nation of France to several great victories in the hundred years war. When Joan of Arc was just 18 she marched to New Orleans at the head of her army on her war horse. In one hand she would have an ancient sword that she found near a tomb of a saint, and in the other hand she would carry a white banner embroidered with lilies. She inspired the whole army with courage and faith as she talked about her vision. She was captured by the burgundians, sold to the English tried by an ecclesiastical court and claimed guilty. she was then burned at the stake at the age of only 19 years old. as horrible as this is, 25 years after the execution Pope Callixtus III examined the court trial case and claimed that she was in fact innocent. So at least her name was cleared, even though she was put to death for false accusations.

  7. Essay from Jerome Geils-Lindemann,
this week I will talk about Saint Joan of Arc also known as the Maid of Orleans. The french
version is Jeanne d'Arc. He was born around 1412 and died 30 May 1431. His childhood was
Domremy, Lothringen Her parents are Jacques Darc and his wife Isabelle de Vouthon . She was the third of five children. She is is a French national heroine and saint of the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church. As Joan turned 12 , she began hearing voices of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret believing them to have been sent by God. She brought the french army to many important victories during the 100 Year's war. In the Hundred Years' War she led the French against the English. In May 1429, Joan had awesome victory over the English in the Battle Orleance.
By treachery, she was captured by the Burgundians while defending Compiegne near Paris and afterwards and sold to the allied of britian.
They burned her at the stake when she was 19 years old in Rouen.
25 years after the execution, Pope Callixtus III
In 1909 she was blessed by Pope Pius X and eleven years later in 1920 canonized by Pope Benedict XV.
Her commemoration day is the 30 May.

  8. My essay is about Mary Anne Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s wife, obviously. I decided to write about her, because I’m not sure why but Lincoln has always caught my attention, maybe because I visited the theater he died in, on a school trip to D.C.
Mrs. Lincoln was born in Lexington, Kentucky, on December 13, 1818. Her father Robert Smith Todd, a lawyer, died when she was 31. She lost her mother at a very young age, 7. A year later her father married Elizabeth Humphrey.
Mrs. Lincoln did not have a job before she was married, her family was very well off and need of a job was unnecessary. She married Abraham Lincoln in 1842 when she was 23. Shocking to know he broke off the engagement a few months after she had accepted. They had four children, Robert, Edward, William, and Thomas, all boys!
She stayed home and took care of her children while Lincoln did his campaigns, as first lady she decided to decorate the White House a little more. Although she did suffer depression at first from what they think the Civil War. Which would make sense, since that was all on Lincoln and his wife.

    Hahaha Jerome.
I think your essay is about Joan of Arc right?
Well, I'm pretty sure that Joan was a GIRL!!! ;)

  10. Joan of Arc was an outstanding girl. She was a peasant girl, but became a hero of France. She is also known as the Maid of France. Her parents were Jacques d'Arc and Isabelle Romée and they all lived in the village Domrémy. When she was 16 she made a made a remarkable prediction about a military reversal near Orléan. Then after her prediction turned out to be true Robert de Baudricourt granted her an escort to visit Chinon after the news from the front confirmed her prediction. Then she joined the military leaders and counseled them at battles and it turned out that she was a great strategist. That way she lead the French army to several important vistories during the Hundred Year’s War. Later she was captured by Burgundians and sold to the English. Then she was burned at the stake. At that time she was 19 years old.

  11. I chose Michelle Obama as the first lady I write about. Everybody probably knows that but I start out with the normal facts. She is the wife of Barack Obama who is president right now.
Michelle Obama’s full name is Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama. Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born on January 17, 1964, in Chicago and her parents are Fraser Robinson and Marian Robinson. She is a lawyer who grew up in Chicago and she is also the first Afro-American first lady of the US. She graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. 2008 and 2009 she helped to campaign for her husband’s presidential bid.

  12. This week I will write about Michelle Obama, since she is the wife of the actual President. Michelle Obama was born on January 17, 1964. Her full name is Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama and she is the wife of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. She also is the first African-American First Lady of the history of the United States. Michelle was raised in Chicago and went to the Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She worked at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met Barack Obama. She worked for mayor Richard M. Daley, and for the University of Chicago’s Medical Center.
In 2007-2008, she was helping her husband campaigning for the upcoming election for the new President. They have two daughters, Malia and Sasha. Her brother Craig Robinson is the men’s basketball coach at the Oregon State University. Because of being in public, as being the wife of an Senator and being the First Lady, Michelle Obama has become a fashion icon and definitely an encouraging role model for women. She stands up strongly for the importance of healthy eating and for poverty awareness. That Michelle Obama stands up for the healthy eating is a really good thing in my own opinion. The right eating, especially for little children is important and I sometimes have the feeling that we do not pay enough attention of what we are eating.

  13. I am really glad that our essay is on Jeanne D’Arc because she was French and woman are very proud of her, she is a sort of symbol for us of courage and strength not only physical strength but also in her mind. She is the one I want to look like in God’s army. Like I said, she is considered as a heroine of France and also a Catholic Saint. She was a peasant girl that claimed Divine guidance and led the French army to several victories special in the Hundred Years War. But she was captured by the English and burned at the age of 19. But twenty five years after her execution, she was pronounced innocent and declared as a martyr.

I would like to do my second essay on Anna Eleanor Roosevelt. Her husband was Frankin Delano Roosevelt who was president of the United States from 1933 to 1945. Eleanor was born on October 11, 1884 and died on November 7, 1962. She was an advocate for civil rights. After her husband's death in 1945, Roosevelt continued to be an international author, speaker, politician, and activist for the New Deal coalition. She was also one of the co-founders of the Freedom House and supported the formation of the United Nations. It seems to me that she was a really good First lady of the United States and did a lot to support associations that seemed to be good for the world in general.

  14. Joan of Arc, something I have never heard about before this assignment.
Joan of Arc, is also called The Maid of Orleans. Joan of Arc is a national heroine of France and also a Catholic saint. She was born in east France and she was the one you claimed guidance. Since that was something she was not just claiming but also accomplishing, she led the French army to a lot of really important victories while the Hundred Years’ War was going on. She got caught by the Burgundians, after that sold to the English, than tried by an court of the church, and finally burned when she was 19 years old. Around 25 years after she died, Pope Callixtus III studied her past and announced that she was not guilty. He also announced that Joan of Arc died as an martyr.
During her lifetime she said that she had visions of God, in which he told her to recover her homeland from English dominations during the Hundred Years’ War if that is true, we don’t know till today.
I think this woman sounds kind of brave, whatever she tried to do she eventually did. Even though we do not know if she really had visions from God, she told about them and she tried to transpose them. I personally don’t believe that, I can not even explain why, but to me it just sounds a little unbelievable. I guess we will never know the truth about this mystery.

  16. Joan of Arc or Jeanne d’Arc (1412-1431) in French was and is considered an heroine and a catholic saint. She led the French army to important victories during the Hundred Years' War, The uncrowned King Charles VII sent her to the siege of Orléans as part of a mission and she got coronate by her victories.

Burgundians captured her and they sold her to the English, tried by an ecclesiastical court, and burned at the stake when she was 19 years old.

Now in day, she has been inspiration for famous people like Napoleon, politicians and also famous writers talk about her like Shakespeare, Voltaire, and Schiller etc…

She was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920, (for those who don’t know what is that, she became saint of Catholic Church).

I think that here is another example of how woman are important in the history and inspiration for people now in days acting like she did and you can see that and examples like Mother Teresa, Cleopatra, Elizabeth I etc…

  17. Hannah Hoes Van Buren (1783-1819) was the wife of the president number eight of United States, Martin Van Buren.

Martin, at age 24, and Hannah, at age 23, married on February 21 of 1807 in New York.

She was born to Johannes Dircksen Hoes and Maria Quakenbush of Dutch ancestry.

    Their children were:
Abraham Van Buren, John Van Buren, Martin "Matt" Van Buren, Jr., and Smith Thompson Van Buren

After 10 years of marriage, Mrs. Van Buren contracted tuberculosis and died at age 35.

Something that I found interesting is that she died before Martin Van Buren became president and he never remarried but she still considering First Lady of United States.

  18. Joan of Arc was born around 1412 to Jacques d'Arc and Isabelle Romeein Domremy. They lived in an isolated part of a north eastern territory that was loyal to the French crown. When Joan was a child her village was burned by the enemy.
Joan experienced her first vision when she was twelve. She was alone in a field when she saw a vision of three visitors. She identified them as St. Michael, St. Catherine and St. Margaret. She explained that they told her to drive out the English and bring the future King Charles the VII to Rheems for coronation.
France at this time was desolate. The French population had not recovered from the Black Plaque. It's merchants were isolated from foreign markets. The French king at the time of Joan's birth was unable to rule because of bouts of insanity. There was much division amongst the royalty. This later lead into a huge break down of any type of French leadership. The English were trying to conquer all of France and rule in both countries.
At this point Joan asked for an audience with a garrison commander. She predicted a military reversal near Orleans. (Which happened!)
She asked for a private conference with Charles VII. Dressed in
a male disguise she journeyed through hostile territory to get to him.
After years of humiliating defeat Joan's urgent request to be equipped for war and placed at the head of the army was granted.
She arrived at the siege of Orleans but was initially excluded form the war council.
Things changed and more and more the army's commanders esteemed her as a skilled tactician and successful strategist.
She rejected the cautious strategy that had characterized French leadership. She won many battles for France. She was able to see the coronation of her king, King Charles VII.
She was captured and put on trial. She was tied to a tall pillar and burned. She became a national war hero. Pope Benedict XV canonized Joan of Arc on May 16,1920.

  19. Saint Joan of Arc is a national heroine of France and a Catholic saint . She led the French army to several important victories during the Hundred Years' War, was a series of wars waged from 1337 to 1453 by the House of Valois and the House of Plantagenet, also known as the House of Anjou, for the French throne . he conflict lasted 116 years but was punctuated by several periods of peace, before it finally ended in the expulsion of the Plantagenets from France (except from the Pale of Calais). The final outcome was a victory for the house of Valois. Also Down to the present day, Joan of Arc has remained a significant figure in Western culture. From Napoleon onward, French politicians of all leanings have invoked her memory. Famous writers and composers who have created works about her include: Shakespeare , Maxwell Anderson etc. Joan of Arc rejected the cautious strategy that had characterized French leadership during previous campaigns. During the five months of siege before her arrival, the defenders of Orléans had attempted only one aggressive move and that had ended in disaster

  20. I chose to write about Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama .I’m pretty sure that almost everyone know her ,she is the wife of the 44th and incumbent President of the United States,Barack Obama, and is the first African-American First Lady of the United States. Raised on the South Side of Chicago and she is also the currently first lady of united states of America . Michelle was inspired to follow her brother to Princeton University; he graduated in 1983. At Princeton, she challenged the teaching methodology for French because she felt that it should be more conversational. She wrote a thesis entitled "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community.","I remember being shocked," she says, "by college students who drove BMWs. I didn't even know parents who drove BMWs." She met Barack Obama when they were among the few African Americans at their law firm, Sidley Austin . During her early months as First Lady, she has frequently visited homeless shelters and soup kitchens. She has also sent representatives to schools and advocated public service. On her first trip abroad in April 2009, she toured a cancer ward with Sarah Brown, wife of British Prime MinisterGordon Brown .She has earned widespread publicity on the topic of healthy eating by planting the first White House vegetable garden since Eleanor Roosevelt served as first lady.

  21. I thought all of the America is big city, I mean America has many buildings and huge load everywhere. Because when I am watching the America's movie, I can see really big buildings and huge load in the city. But here is small town, no buildings and no huge load. And I thought I can go somewhere by city bus, subway or taxi. But I can't and my host family's home is so far from the school. In Korea has many high school so we don't need to go the far school. But I like small town more than big city because the air is fresher than my city so I can see really many stars at night. And the sky is beautiful, Korea has many buildings so I can’t see the sky widely. But I can see the sky widely. My church is really big so I thought America’s church is bigger than my church, but….it’s really small. And Korea’s students doesn’t need to change the class because teachers come the class so my classmate is doesn’t change while one year by the way my classmate is more than here’s I have forty classmate, so the teachers can’t control us. I am thinking about America’s school and I like here’s school more.
