Homework 4, Due September 7, 2012

This week’s assignment offers you a choice of topics to research. We are going to use the website livius.org, which is similar to Wikipedia.org in that it is a free resource with many contributors, but different in that the contributors are all college history professors whose work is thoroughly checked for accuracy and quality.

The first option is to research and report on the war between Jews and Romans at the time of the fall of Jerusalem and other Jewish strongholds. Read the article found at the link http://www.livius.org/ja-jn/jewish_wars/jwar05.html and write an essay describing your findings. State and defend your opinion about whether the Jews should have rebelled against the Roman Empire, given what you know of the subject.

The second option is to further research the Babylonian Empire. While we have discussed the Old Babylonian Empire, the Assyrian Empire, and the New (Neo) Babylonian Empire, there are several other empires that arose in the area known as Mesopotamia that we did not discuss in class lecture. Follow the link http://www.livius.org/ba-bd/babylon/babylonian_empire.html and read the article there then report your findings on one of the empires that we did not discuss in class. Offer and defend your opinion as to why this region so often saw powerful empires arise only to fall quickly after a few generations.

The third option is to research the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World as discussed in the article found at http://www.livius.org/se-sg/7wonders/seven_wonders.html . Which was most impressive? Which was, in your estimation, the least? Defend your opinions by offering critical analysis of both.

As always, be sure to cite your sources. In citing an internet source, be sure to mention the author, the title and URL of the page, and -this is important- the date on which you saw the page. After all, webpages are bound to change. Also, check the website www.akers-scs.blogspot.com for important information regarding lesson plans. Thanks and keep up the good work!

  1. For this weeks assignment I decided to research the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The seven wonders of the Ancient world are the 1)walls of Babylon,2)Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia,3)The hanging gardens of Babylon,4)The colossus of Rhodes,5)The pyramids of Egypt, 6)The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and 7)The temple of Artemis in Ephesus. Now I will describe each one in detail. The walls of Babylon became famous by the Greek author Herodotus of Halicarnassus. He wrote about them and how great they were. But now a days we know by archaeological finds that he must have never really seen the walls and wrote his little exert by only of what people had told them about the walls. The second wonder is Phidias’ statue of Zeus in Olympia. All though the statue is now lost, it is shown on gems and coins all over. This statue was made of gold and ivory and was always repaired when needed. But eight centuries after it was made the Roman emperor Constantine the Great had it moved to the new capital Constantinople. The subsequent history of Phidias' Zeus is not recorded. The third wonder is the hanging gardens of Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar had this park built for his wife, Media, so that she would forget about her home land. The fourth wonder is the Colossus of Rhodes. They built this as a memorial to remember the blockade of the city of Rhodes by king Demetrius Poliorcetes. Because he tried to take an important port but he failed. Sadly it was destroyed by an earthquake in 227\226 BCE. The fifth wonder is the pyramids of Egypt. The Egyptians started building these pyramids as tombs for their Pharaohs. King Djoser was the first to do this. The pyramids are the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that survives more intact. The sixth wonder is The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. This was a tomb for Maussolus, satrap. He wife built it for him. She wanted it to surpass all the others. Some of the best sculptors were involved in building this. The proud tower was ultimately destroyed by the Rhodian knights in 1522, which used the stones to build a castle. The final wonder, the seventh, is the temple of Artemis in Ephesus. It was an ancient sanctuary for a mother goddess who protected pregnant women. It was built on marshy ground so the it would be less venerable to earthquakes. The sanctuary burned down in the summer of 356 BCE, an event that was remembered because it coincided with the birth of Alexander the Great. But thankful there are some remains of the building.

    1. Abby Sams what a great job on your essay! I can tell you took so much hard work and time on it! I also chose to write about the seven wonders of the ancient world because I think they are extremely interesting and an important part of history. I'm also very thankful we have some remains of the temple of Artemis.

  2. For this week assignment I chose to do the Babylonian Empire. The Old Babylonian Period, which most of us know about because we studied about it. Of Course Hammurabi was the king, but the kings of Isan, Larsa, and Babylon are known as the first dynasty of Babylon. Hammurabi united these places, but they all we in a war together against each other. There were enemies, which Hammurabi couldn’t fight all by himself, which resulted in them taking the statue of the supreme god in Babylonia. The Kassite period, The Kassite’s took over Babylon and eventually got the god/ statue back. The Kassite King didn’t do anything so during his reign Babylon was taken over by many other places. A very important statue was taken from them and then returned again. The Middle Babylonian Period is when the Kassite rulers were replace by the second dynasty of Isan. The statue of Marduck was returned to them again, and some civilizations went through a period called the dark ages. The Assyrian Period, the king united Babylon but he also slacked off in his job. The Assyrian King had been in so many wars, the Babylonians revolted and then it took a while for the king to gain some order and power back. The Neo- Babylonian Empire, during this rule King Nabopolassar which is the father of Nebuchadnezzar (as we learned in History class.) He died during this time and in this time later the Assyrian Empire was replace by the Babylonian Empire. Later on in History Nebuchadnezzar died and his son then took over and then he was murdered shortly after his reign began. His son-in-law became king and was victorious. There were many kings that came in (Cyrus the Great, Astyges, etc.) The Babylonians revolted some other times.

    1. Great job Bethany on your assignment! You wrote a very good essay this week about the Babylon Empire. You had several facts that I did not know about the Kassite period. I also did not know that the dark ages were during this time period in history.

    2. Very good essay Bethany. You chose of the more difficult essays of the week. I really liked how you explained the Babylonian empire. I didnt know the Kassite people toook over the Babylonian Empire and i really enjoyed reading anout it your essay.

  3. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are the walls of Babylon, Phidias’ statue of Zeus in Olympia, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the colossus of Rhode, the pyramids of Egypt, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and the temple of Artemis in Ephesus. The walls of Babylon were made famous by the Greek author Herodotus of Halicarnassus. Everything he wrote about them was greatly exaggerated though and they say that Herodotus never visited Babylon and what he wrote was just things he had heard about it. Phidias’ statue of Zeus was the second wonder of the ancient world. It was made of gold and ivory. The statue is now lost, but it is still on coins and gems. The third wonder of the ancient world is the Hanging Gardens. Nebuchadnezzar built this for his wife, a princess from Media, in hope that she would forget her homeland. No one has been able to find any traces of the Hanging Gardens. The fourth wonder of the ancient world is the Colossus of Rhode. The Colossus was made as a remembrance of the blockade of Rome. This monument was almost thirty meters tall and it guarded the entrance of the harbor. Around 227/226 BC, an earthquake hit and it collapsed. The fifth wonder was the pyramids of Egypt. The pyramids were built to be used as tombs for the Pharaohs. The sixth wonder of the ancient world was the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. This was the tomb of Maussolus and was built out of bricks and covered in white Proconnessian marble. The tower was destroyed by Rhodian knights in 1522, who used the stone to build a castle. Finally, the seventh wonder of the ancient world was the temple of Artemis in Ephesus. The temple was a very ancient sanctuary for a mother goddess who protected pregnant women. This sanctuary burnt down in the summer of 356 BC but many architectural pieces can now be seen in the British museum.

  4. The Greek people of the ancient world loved creating lists. A man by the name of Antipater of Sidon was the first known person to make a list of some of the most impressive and lavish works of architecture in the world. These works are known as the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. They include: The walls of Babylon, Phidias’ statue of Zeus in Olympia, the hanging gardens of Babylon, the colossus of Rhodes, the pyramids of Egypt, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and the temple of Artemis in Ephesus.
My favorite of these “wonders” is the pyramids of Egypt. Built with great precision and care, the pyramids took years to finish. For instance, the Great Pyramid of Giza took ten to twenty years to build. It was a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, and is the oldest of the Great Pyramids. The pyramids have for the most part remained intact. None of the other wonders of the ancient world have done so.
In my opinion, the least impressive “wonder” was the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. This was a tomb built for Maussolus the governor of Caria, by his wife after his death in 353bc. Unlike the pyramids, this monument did not stand the test of time. In 1522 it was destroyed by the Rhodian knights, leaving behind the crushed remains. Also, the tomb was nowhere near the size of most of the Egyptian pyramids. The great Pyramid of Giza for example, was 146.5 meters tall, whereas the tomb of Maussolus was only 41 meters high.
Even though I have my favorites, all seven of the Wonders of the Ancient World are remarkable in their own unique way.

  5. The Seven Wonders of the Anciet World were the Greeks list of seven amazing works of architecture. The Seven Wonders were as follows: The Walls of Babylon, Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and the temple of Artemis in Ephesus. The most impressive of these seven wonders, in my opion, is The Walls of Babylon. The reason i chose this as the best of the seven because it was very well built. The walls had stories on both sides of them and were wide enough that four wheeled chariot could drive through it. I find that very interesting that in that time period they coiuld come up with something so magnificent. The least impressive of the Seven Wonders, in my opinion, would have to be The Colossus of Rodes. This would have been the least magnificent because there was nothing about it that really made it special. The Colossus was a statue of the Greek god Helios that was built to guard the entrance of the harbor. This statue fell over not long after it was built during and earthquake. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient worl were all very magnificent pieces in that they all were a great idea. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon wpuld have been the second best, then the Pyramids of egypt, then
Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia, then The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, then The temple of Artemis of Ephesus, and lastly the Colossus of Rhodes.

  6. For my essay this week I have decided to talk about The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. You may be wondering what the seven wonder of the world are. Which was most impressive? Which was, in my estimation, the least? Well guess what! I have answers! The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are: 1. the walls of Babylon 2. Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia 3. The hanging gardens of Babylon 4. The Colossus of Rhodes 5. The pyramids of Egypt 6. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus 7. The temple of Artemis of Ephesus. Now that I have told you what they are let’s get a little more in depth with which one is most impressive. My personal opinion would have to be that the most impressive one is the hanging gardens of Babylon. This one impresses me because king Nebuchadnezzar II builds well not builds but creates a beautiful garden for his queen. She was a young lady from Iran who longed back to the mountains of her fatherland. I guess honestly it impresses me that a guy would do that for his queen. Most guys now a day wouldn’t. The one that struck me to be the least impressive was The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. It was least impressive to me because it was just a tomb. His wife must have really loved him to make his tomb like this, “it was erected out of bricks but covered with white Proconnessian marble, and was at least 41 meters high.”

  7. I chose to write my essay on the seven ancient wonders of the world. My top wonder would be the hanging gardens. I believe it is the most impressive because it was a beautiful and massive structure that King Nebuchadnezzar built for his homesick bride. Still today archeologists search for its remains, but cannot find any, but there are many accounts of the hanging gardens In recorded history. The least impressive wonder in my opinion is the palace of Ecbatana. It is the least impressive because many palaces have been built over the centuries and I have read nothing that says it was special in any way. In conclusion, all the seven wonders of the ancient world were wonderful. Even the one that I ranked as the least wonderful would be a grand sight to see.

    2. Great job on your essay.. I think the hanging gardens that King Nebuchanezzar built for his homesick bride was also pretty impressive. And even though Ecbatana isn't as amazing as the rest, any of the seven wonders would be pretty amazing to see.

  8. For this week’s assignment, I chose to write on the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Seven Wonders are as follows: 1.) The Walls of Babylon 2.)Phidias’ Statue of Zeus in Olympia 3.)The Hanging Gardens of Babylon 4.)The Colossus of Rhodes 5.)The Pyramids of Egypt 6.) The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus 7.) The temple of Artemis in Ephesus. Because of each the Wonders beauty and intricate designs, it is no wonder why they are considered the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. With this being said, however, to me one is definitely more interesting to me and one is the least interesting to me. The most interesting to me is the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. I really think that this stands out the most because it is so interesting how it all came together and how they could actually plant the roots in a terrace as opposed to the ground. I also think it was really interesting how it came about; Nebuchadnezzar’s wife was homesick and missed the plants of her homeland, therefore the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built. Although there have been no actual archeological evidence of the Hanging Gardens, it has been recorded multiple times throughout history. While I’ve mentioned my personal favorite of the Seven Ancient Wonders, I have not mentioned my least favorite: The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. I believe that this is the “weakest link” because it is simply a pretty white burial place. It is by all means impressive in its own way, but when compared with the others it falls short to me. In addition to being just the burial place for Mausolus, it didn’t even remain through the years like some of the other wonders. In conclusion, all of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are incredible, but every person has their own view on what is the most and least spectacular.
    Thank you,
    Rebecca Dunmore

    2. Nice job on your essay this week! The Hanging Gardens of Babylon is another one of my favorite "wonders of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It sounds like they were incredible from what we know about them. I agree with you that the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus is my least favorite "wonder" as well.

  9. I chose to do my homework on the Seven Wonders. The first list was made by Antipater of Sidon. He listed the Seven Wonders as: 1) The walls of Babylon, 2) Phidias statue of Zeus in Olympia, 3) The hanging gardens of Babylon, 4) The Colossus of Rhodes, 5) The pyramids of Egypt, 6) The mausoleum of Halicarnassus, 7) The temple of Artemis in Ephesus. I think the most impressive is the pyramids of Egypt. They were made between c.2630 to 1640. The pyramids are the most intact of the Seven Wonders. The pyramids range from many different sizes, but the ones from the fourth dynasty are some of the most impressive. King Djoser was the first to start stacking square tombs on top of each other. They were used as tombs for the kings. The pyramids provided protection from thieves trying to steal the king’s riches. Even though each of the wonders is impressive in their own way, I would have to say the least is the Colossus. King Demetrius Poliorcetes attempted to conquer an important port, but failed. The Rhodians made Chares of Lindos to build a statue of the sun god Helios. It guarded the entrance of the harbor. It was thirty meters high and the pedestal added another ten meters. In 227/226 BCE an earthquake destroyed it. Later a similar statue was recreated in Rome when an artist named Zenodorus made a copy in Gaul It was called “colossus Neronis” and inspired the Statue of Liberty.

  10. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
The ancient Greeks compiled a list of some of the greatest building in the world. This list came to be known as The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The list consisted of the Walls of Babylon, Phidias’ statue of Zeus in Olympia, The hanging gardens of Babylon, The Colossus of Rhodes, the Pyramids of Egypt, The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, and the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus.
One very impressive structure on this list is the hanging gardens of Babylon. The Hanging Gardens were built by King Nebuchadnezzar to make his new wife feel like she was back at home in the mountains. The Great Pyramids of Egypt were built as massive tombs for the pharaohs and their possessions because the Egyptians believed that you could take your wealth with you into the afterlife. The Temple of Artemis was built in Ephesus to honor the Greek goddess who protected women who were with child.
The Wonder of the Ancient world that I thought was the most impressive was the Colossus of Rhodes. Built to commemorate the cities victory over the invading King Demetrius Poliocreties, the statue was nearly 30 meters high. The reason that I thought that it was the most spectacular was because it was not just a massive structure, but it was also a work of art.
The structure that I thought was the least impressive were the Babylon Walls. Although very spectacular I did not think that their magnificence equaled that of the others.

  11. Bethany- I loved your essay this week because it was a very interesting and well written report and it was also very different from what the rest of us did. I thought that is was especially interesting about the taking of the supreme god statue in Babylon. Anyway, great job on this weeks’ essay!
Sarah Flinchum- I also really enjoyed your essay this week. The Pyramids were definitely amazing. The Egyptians built these pyramids with such precision and accuracy that, while it took ten to twenty years to build, they are still standing today. I agree with you about the “least wondrous” of the Seven Wonders, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. Overall, I thought you did an excellent job on this weeks’ assignment.
Lydia- I liked your essay for this week because when I looked up the Palace, even though it was pretty, it wasn’t exactly as spectacular as the others like you said. Great job!

  12. I chose to write my essay over the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Seven Wonders were simply seven amazing wonders of agriculture. These Seven Wonders were

1.) The Walls of Babylon. The reason that these walls were so famous is because of the Greek author Herodotus of Halicarnassus he wrote about how magnificent the walls were, but he did exaggerate the measurements. The walls were about 8,400 meters in circumference.

2.) Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia. It was built in 456 BEC to honor the first Greek Olympic games. The statue is lost, but the Greek author Pausanias describes the statue of being made of gold and ivory and twelve meters high with a statue of Nike in one hand.

3.) The hanging gardens of Babylon. They were built by King Nebuchadnezzar so that his wife would enjoy a lovely garden. They were supposably about 400 feet wide, 400 feet long, and over 80 feet high, and built around 600 BEC.

4.)The Colossus of Rhodes. The people of Rhodes melted down bronze and made a statue of Helios, the sun god. After 56 years, it got destroyed by an earthquake.

5.) The pyramids of Egypt. The pyramids are the only one of the Seven Wonders to still be somewhat in existence.

6.) The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus. It was the tomb of Maussolus who had come to power in 377 and had died in 353.

7.) The temple of Artemis of Ephesus. It was built for a mother goddess who protected pregnant women. It was made of marble, with 127 60-foot-high columns. It was also built in a marshy area to protect against earthquakes.

The one I thought was the most interesting was The Great Pyramids I think that it is neat that it is still in tact today and I enjoy learning about Egypt. The one I thought was the least interesting was the Walls of Babylon because I don't think they were as magnificent and spectacular as the other six wonders.

  16. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are not recognized very often in our society today. However, they are important for cultures in the Middle East. The first one is the walls of Babylon. The second is Phidias' statue of Zeus in Olympia. The third was the hanging gardens of Babylon. The fourth was the colossus of Rhodes. The fith was the pyramids of Egypt. This was my personal favorite wonder. The pyramids were built with such precison and architecture. The sixth was the mausoleum of Halicarnassus, which, in my opinion, was the least. The mausoleum definitley showed its time after a while. And finally, the seventh was the temple of artemis in Ephesus.
