Homework 3, Due November 16, 2012

As we've studied the history of Christianity in the days of the Roman Empire and the centuries after its fall, I hope you've had an opportunity to consider the incredible price that was paid by early Christians as they faced terrible persecution for their beliefs. The bravery of these men and women is astounding, and modern Christians should be mindful that we have the Word of God preserved only by His grace and their faithfulness. Of course, people are still being martyred and imprisoned today for their Christian beliefs.

This week I'd like you to research a Christian martyr and share his/her story along with a personal lesson we can learn from them. Here are a couple of good websites you can access to begin your work.

http://www.biblebelievers.com/foxes/findex.htm

Remember that your response must be at least 250 words and that you must respond to at least two others (a total of 150 words). Failure to complete your homework assignments can have a dire effect on your grade!

  1. The Christian leader I chose to talk about that was martyred is Paul. A martyr is a person that dies for their faith. Martyring happened a lot during the Roman Empire and is still going on today, just not as much. Paul was previously called Saul before he was a Christian. In Acts chapter nine, the Bible talks about Saul’s conversion to Christianity. Saul was actually persecuting Christians himself, one being Stephen. Then, one day, he was on his way to Damascus and a light from heaven flashed around him and said, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” Saul was blinded for three days and ate nothing. A man named Ananias was informed by a vision about what happened to Saul, and he laid his hands on him and, he could see and eat again. He immediately converted to Christianity and was baptized. He then changed his name to Paul. After that, he went on to write thirteen books of the Bible. After his fifth missionary journey ended in 67 AD, he was led to a private place outside the city and gave his neck to the sword. Paul is a good example for Christians today because he shows that no matter how bad you were before you were a Christian, through Christ, you are a brand new creation. He also shows how dedicated he was to following Christ. He was willing to follow him even if it coasted him his life. He is a good example for us.

    1. Lexie Turpin,
I really enjoyed your essay and thought it was very informational. You did a great job at explaining your topic. I agree that Paul was a good example to us. He showed us how to truly live for Christ. Sometimes, we take our salvation for granted and become selfish. Paul set a wonderful example for us to be humble with our faith! Great work!

    2. Great job on your essay, Lexie! Paul is definitely a role-model for Christians today. I have heard the story of Paul (Saul) my whole life, but I didn't know the year o his death till today. Paul's testimony is a life-changing one because it doesn't matter what you have done God can still use you. Again, great job!

  2. A martyr is a person who dies because of their faith. I chose to do my essay about Stephen who was the first Christian martyr. Stephen was one of the greatest men of the early church. He was not an apostle, but he ministered to the widows being cared for in Jerusalem. He was full of God’s spirit and performed many healing miracles. When he began to preach, many Jews argued with him about his beliefs. These men persuaded people that Stephen was preaching against Moses and even against God. It wasn’t true, but many people got upset and believed it anyway. Those men took Stephen before the Sanhedrin, the Jewish leaders who were capable of making life or death decisions. As Steven was standing before them, he continued to be a witness. Stephen told them the whole story of the Jewish people beginning with Abraham. That just caused them to be angrier, and they began to yell at the top of lungs and hold their ears so they couldn’t hear Stephen. At that they dragged Stephen out of the city and stoned him to death. While they were throwing stones at him, Stephen prayed to God saying, “Do not hold this sin against them” and then he died. Stephen had the same forgiving spirit that Jesus had when he said the same words on the cross. A lesson we can learn from Stephen, or any other martyr, is to not be afraid to stand up for what’s right. Something we can learn specifically from Stephen is to have a forgiving spirit and that we, being completely human and filled with the Holy Spirit, can forgive as completely as Jesus did when they were nailing him to the cross.

    1. Wow, Summer you really blew me away this week. I have to say I agree with everything you said. Stephen really was one of the greatest men of the early church! And I have to say it was so amazing that while they were throwing stones at him he prayed that God would wouldn't hold the sin against them. Great job.

  3. For this week’s essay I’m going to talk about Paul just like lexie did. Because it just amazing to me how the Holy Spirit can change someone so majorly like it did Paul. Hope fully everyone reading this knows pauls story and that he used to be named Saul and as Saul he himself had persecuted Christian martyrs. But the god blinded him and told Ananias in a vision and once Ananias put his hand on his eyes he was able to see physically and spiritually. then Saul now called Paul was saved by grace through faith. And was also baptized. Paul dedicated his life to doing whatever god called him to and eventually wrote many books of the bible most of them were letters to cities. And spent a lot of time on being a missionary for god and came close to death several times once he was stoned to death and left to die but he never got killed. and similar things happened several time throughout pauls life as a missionary. But as to how paul died there is evidence supports but not evidence that state it as a fact that Paul the apostle died after his fifth missionary journey ended in 67 A.D Paul was likely killed by the Romans be means of beheading, under Emperor Nero due to his faith in God and refusal to deny god to nero but as for nero he killed himself sometime around around june of that same year 68 A.D

  4. For my assignment this week, I decided to write about the Apostle Peter. Peter was a lowly fisherman who was called by Jesus to be a disciple and do great thing through Him. Peter spent three years with Jesus. Peter was part of the inner-circle of disciples which also consisted of James, and John; these disciples were the only ones present during the transfiguration and when Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead. Peter did make a big mistake when he denied three times that he even knew Jesus, but was forgiven and reinstated as an apostle after Jesus rose from the dead It was Peter who preached the first sermon to the on-lookers on the day of Pentecost. Peter was also seen as a pillar of the early church. Peter of one of many early Church leaders who were executed in Rome at the hands of Emperor Nero. Tradition holds that Peter was crucified upside down because he said that he was not worthy to be crucified in the same way as the Lord. I think we can learn a lot of lessons from Peter. I think that there are a lot of lessons can be learned from Peter’s life. First off, Peters life shows us that God use anyone for his purpose and his glory. Some might have found it funny when Jesus chose a humble fisherman to be one of his disciples, but God saw Peter for who he would become, not who he was. Second, Peter’s life shows us that no matter how bad we mess up, God will always take us back- Peter messed up horribly the night that Jesus was arrested, but, he was restored by God, and fifty days later, Peter stood up and preached the very first sermon on the day of Pentecost where 5,000 people were saved as a result. Third, we can learn from Peter’s humility, even to the point of being crucified upside-down because he did not see himself worthy to be crucified in the same way as the Lord.

    1. Bobby,
I thought you did an exceptional job on your assignment this week! It really gave me some knowledge about Peter. I enjoyed reading about his humility. Christians can really learn from his example of being humble and not self-centered with our salvation. We can have a tendency to use our faith for our own good and leave God out of it. Great job!

    2. You did an awesome job on your essay this week, Bobby! I liked that you chose Peter, who was one of Jesus’ disciples. Peter got an amazing opportunity, in which he got to live during the time Christ was on earth. That’s unfathomable to me. I also like that Peter, like everyone else, is not perfect. He made mistakes, but soon realized what he did was wrong and repented. Peter life is an example to others that no matter who you are God can use you in amazing ways to bring Him glory. Peter was used by God during Pentecost to preach in which people were rapidly saved by the thousands. Great work!

  5. For this assignment, I chose to write about someone in modern day who was a martyr for Christ. Cassie Bernall was killed at age 17 during the Columbine High School massacre. Eric Harris, the gunman, asked her if she believed in God. She simply answered, "Yes, I believe." And thus, she was shot point-blank. Eleven other students and one teacher also lost their lives, and twenty-three others were wounded. Prior to this, Cassie grew up in a Christian home. She attended church regularly and was no different than any other teen. Her favorite Bible verse, according to her mother, was Ephesians 6:11-13 which said, "Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground and, after you have done everything, to stand." After reading this verse, it gave me chills. God knew what was going to happen to Cassie. He knew that she would, one day, have to stand up for her faith. Her story is so encouraging to me to live my life for Christ. Cassie is one of my role models today. One thing that Christians should learn from her story is that all of us should live life so as to be able to face eternity at any time.

    2. Great job on your essay, McKenzie! I especially liked that you wrote about someone that any of us could relate to. It makes persecution as a Christian become a reality. I too have heard of Cassie's courageous story and also find it very inspirational. I'm sure Cassie never thought that she would be shot down for her beliefs at her school in America. It makes you wonder what will happen tomorrow. I hope that whatever happens that I'm ready to say "Yes, I believe," just like Cassie did without a spirit of fear. Again, great job!

  6. I have chosen for this week’s assignment to write about Stephen and his awful life. What is a martyr? A martyr is a person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce religion. Stephen a little background information on him is he was one of the seven first Christian deacons. Most people know him as the first martyr. The seven deacons were chosen to assist The Twelve in the service of the new church in Jerusalem. Stephen had outstanding character and miraculous power given to him by God. But with all these things he was still only a deacon. Stephen soon found himself in a difficult religious situation with authorities not because he was doing anything wrong, but because he was seen as a serious and growing threat to their misguided control over the people. They then falsely accused him of blasphemy and in knowingly doing so; they themselves blasphemed the Holy Spirit, which was actually the source of Stephen's wisdom. Stephen was arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin where more false accusations were made. Stephen was dragged out of the city, where they began stoning him. To keep their clothes from becoming splattered with Stephen's blood during the murder; they laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. Stephen remained strong and true to the very end, his faith never wavering. Just reading this makes me tear up because when you think about dying for your faith for God would you really do it? I don’t think most of us could. I for one know that it would be a tough decision for me and that makes me sick to think about. I have made it my own personal goal to be more like Stephen in the way of standing up for what I believe.

  7. The Christian martyr I chose to write about was not just an individual, but a family that was persecuted for the sake of the ministry of Christ. The Staines family was a missionary family from Australia who ministered to the people of India. Graham and his wife Gladys, his daughter Easter, his eleven year old son Philip, and his six year old son Timothy, served as missionaries to the people who lived in the jungles of Orissa. Graham was specialized in working with lepers, and he ministered to the people for over thirty-four years, and is described as “a wonderful, gracious, self-effacing man of God, full of faith, confidence and humility; warm-hearted, and a wonderful father.
On January 23rd of 1999, Graham and his two sons were murdered by a large mob of militant Hindus. They had gone to a Christian camp in the jungle, where Graham was ministering. At midnight that night the mob attacked them, setting fire to the jeep in which Graham and his sons were sleeping in. They were burned alive. When the fire had finally cooled, they found the charred body of Graham Staines with his arms wrapped around the bodies of his sons. At his funeral, the streets were filled with Hindus, Muslims, and Christians who came to show their respect for Graham and his family and to show their solidarity against the actions of their killers. When Gladys and Esther found out about this horrific event, their responses were on every newspaper in India (with one billion people). Gladys said, “I have only message for the people of India. I’m not bitter. Neither am I angry. But I have one great desire: that each citizen of this country should establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who gave his life for their sins…let us burn hatred and spread the flame of Christ’s love.” I think that we, as Christians, should have the same giving, loving hearts that Staines family had, and forgive those who have hurt us so that we may be forgiven by God when we get to Heaven.

    2. Sarah Flinchum- I loved your essay for this week’s assignment. It was really interesting to learn about an entire family who devoted their lives to serve Christ, even when it meant death. It is so amazing that even though Mr. Staines and his two sons were killed, his wife and daughter were not bitter, but used their deaths as a way to spread the gospel to even more people. The Staines family should be an inspiration and a model to us all. We should never let anything stand in the way of glorifying our Lord, and when we experience trials we should not become bitter- but use it as an opportunity for others to hear about Christ. Another thing that was so humbling about your essay is that this happened just a few years ago. I personally never think about things like this happening, but it goes on daily. We should pray for each missionary and persecuted Christian that they may stand strong in the faith like the Staines family.

  8. What is a martyr? A martyr is a person who is put to death or endures great suffering on behalf of any belief, principal, or cause. For this assignment I have chosen to talk about the life of Paul. Paul is a great Christian example of someone who is literally willing to do anything for his faith. Before Paul was a beleiver in Christ his name was Saul, we see that in the book of Acts. Saul actually persecuted Chritians himself before he became saved by the grace of God. After he became a Christain and his name was changed to Paul, he was, in fact, the first to face persecution from Nero, who was ruling over the Roman Empire. Paul had such a great impact on all the people in the Roman Empire he was taken away from the city to a secret placed and there he was executed for his beliefs. A personal life lesson I can learn from Pauls life is that God loves everyone. It doesn’t matter what your past looks like, God wants you to be apart of His family! Even when Nero began persecuting Paul, he still stood up for what he believed in and even died for it. How awesome is that? Paul’s life definitly show he was passoinate for the Lord. God will save anybody if you just put in the effort and believe. It doesn’t matter how good or bad you were before you became a christain, it just matters right now. What you are doing to show that God is the light of your life?

  9. A martyr is somebody who suffers persecution and death for refusing to renounce, or accept, a belief or cause, usually religious. Meaning witness, was used in the secular sphere as well as in the New Testament of the Bible.[1] The process of bearing witness was not intended to lead to the death of the witness, although it is known from ancient writers and from the New Testament that witnesses often died for their testimonies.
During the early Christian centuries, the term acquired the extended meaning of a believer who is called to witness for their religious belief, and on account of this witness, endures suffering and/or death.
In my opinion, the most interesting martyr is the Paul. Paul was a person that used to persecute Christians, and was known as Saul of Tarsus, but fortunately he was converted and became one of the most important missionary in the early Christians history, transformed religious belief and philosophy around the Mediterranean Basin. His leadership, influence and legacy led to the formation of communities dominated by Gentile groups that worshiped the God of Israel, adhered to the "Judaic moral code", but relaxed or abandoned the ritual and dietary teachings of the Law of Moses, that these laws and rituals had either been fulfilled in the life of Christ or were symbolic precursors of Christ, all on the basis of Paul's teachings of the life and works of Jesus Christ and his teaching of a New Covenant (or "new testament")[11] established through Jesus' death and resurrection

  10. I chose to write my essay on Stephen. Stephen is known as the first martyr of Christianity. Stephen met his early death when he decided to preach to the betrayers and murderers of Jesus Christ. As he was preaching, the people grew angry and threw Steven out of the city and stoned him to death on the spot. This happened during Passover after the Lord's crucifixion and ascension in the following Spring. Because of this event a huge uprising of persecution came against all who professed Jesus Christ as Lord, Messiah, or a prophet. Luke the Apostle soon recorded the miss happenings of Stephen and the events that happened because of it: "there was a great persecution against the church which was at Jerusalem;" and that "they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judaea and Samaria, except the apostles." Over two thousand men and woman were martyred because of the persecution that arose from the death of Stephen. A lesson we can learn from the martyring of Stephen is courage and power comes through the Holy Spirit when we go through persecution for our faith in Jesus Christ.
Martyrs are great inspirations for our Christian walk. Today in the U.S.A. we as Christians are unfamiliar with persecution being part of our daily lives. But persecution comes in many forms like in pier pressure. As teens it's easy to give in to the personalities that surround us instead of standing strong for the God we can't see.

  11. For this week’s assignment, I chose to write on the martyr, Paul. But, what exactly is a martyr? A martyr according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary is any person who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce a religion. Paul, who was dedicated to the spreading and teaching of the gospel, was not always such a God-fearing man. Before his conversion on the road to Damascus, he was instrumental in the persecution of Christians and even held the coats of the men who stoned the first Christian martyr, Stephen. Anyway after his conversion, Paul’s dedication to the faith wasn’t exactly seen as a good thing in Roman emperor Nero’s eyes and Paul was put to death in AD 67. We can learn a lot form Paul and the legacy he leaves behind. We should all strive to be as bold in the faith as Paul and always stand up for Christ- even if that means persecution, alienation, and maybe even death. Like Kiersten said, we can also learn that God loves everyone. Paul did terrible things to Christians before he was converted, but through God, he became one of the most influential and instrumental people in the development of the spreading of the gospel and the early church. In conclusion, because we are so blessed to live in a nation with freedom of religion, we don’t face the many trials that other countries do and I believe we take that for granted. But, we should continue to pray for the persecuted Christians-for that matter all Christians- that they may stand firm in their faith and trust God with all their hearts.

  12. I choose to write about John Wesley. He was the fifteenth of nineteen children. His father was a preacher and his mother was very intelligent. Wesley founded the “Hoy Club” at Oxford. He and his brothers were sent to Georgia, where they both became preachers. He returned to England and became a popular preacher and a national leader. He preached twice each day, sometimes even three or four. He rode over forty-five English miles on horseback. He went through bitter persecutions. In nearly every part of England he was met by mobs. They stoned and pelted him. They even attempted to slay and wound him. At times there was interference from other groups. Wesley was very devoted to the Established Communion. He soon became known as a “Methodist”, because of his organizing, leader qualities, and ingenious methods. The Methodist church was known as The Wesley Fellowship before his death. His church was known for its military organization perfection. Wesley was responsible for the growth of the church. He held an annual conference, starting in 1744. He also started a new era with his hymns. He planned the culture of his traveling preachers and local exhorters, and for schools of instruction for the future teachers of the Church. He wrote his own popular books about history, church history, and natural history. He also published his best sermons and theological works. They were very deep and had a special style to them. His purpose was to remind the English Church, when it had lost sight of Christ the Redeemer to a renewed Christian life. He led thousands to Christ and changed the Methodist church forever.

  13. Martyrs are a very great thing, standing up for their faith, but it also very sad; however very interesting. It’s great to read and discover the sacrifice of martyr’s and what they did. It reminds us of Jesus Christ dying on the cross. But, the martyr I am going to discuss is John Wycliffe. John Wycliffe, as most of us know, translated the Bible to the common tongue of his region and time. John Wycliffe some of his story is very interesting. Like it was said before we all know that he translated the Bible to the well- known tongue. John Wycliffe passed out tracts against monks and Urban VI. Of course everyone was opposed of this idea of his. The last days of his the peaking point of his knowledge. He preached a sermon which the last part he called “Of Antichrist” and that was left unfinished. When he preaching he suffered a stroke and suffered all the month until the last day of the month when he died. Shortly after he died the Hussite movement swept through this was the starting point of the Protestant Reformation. The church banned Wycliffe and called him heretic. They declared all of his books were to be burned and that the remains of his body were to be exhumed, which means that his body to be dug up from the ground and also be burned. We should always think about these people. Sometimes I wonder if some of us would give our life for our faith.

  14. Martyrs. Some people say that they are crazy to give up their life to die for God. I, on the other hand, think that what they do is fantastic! It's a noble thing laying your life down for Christ and it should be honored. The person I am going to talk about is Stephen. He was like first martyr. Though he was not a apostle, he still was able to reach tons of people. He was preaching the gospel in Jerusalem on the Passover. And this was after they had killed Christ. They took Stephen out of the city and threw rocks at him until he died. (Which we all know is called stoning.) Back in those days it was very common for people to be stoned. But you see what Stephen did was a great thing cause I am sure they probably gave him a chance to renounce his faith but obviously he didn't and in doing so him died a Martyr. As they were stoning him He said, "I can see Jesus sitting at the right hand of the Father." And I think that he was able to see that so he could bear the pain of them throwing stones at his body. But martyrs are not selfish. Even as they were killing him he was like father don't put this sin on them for they don't know what they are doing. So in closing I want us to think, could we do it? Could we share the word of God knowing that we might, in the end, die?

  15. Before starting my essay about the martyr that I chose I will start with a question that some people may not know the answer, What is a Martyr ?
A Martyr (Greek: μάρτυς, mártys, "witness"; stem μάρτυρ-, mártyr-) is somebody who suffers persecution and death for refusing to renounce, or accept, a belief or cause, usually religious. In other words is a person who dies for his/her faith.
Some weeks ago we started to study about Paul in the bible classes, and after learning about him, his history and what he has done I think he is one of the most interesting martyrs in the Christian history.
Paul, the apostle, that was also known as Saul before what happened to him. Paul used to persecute other Christians, but he was converted and instead of being called Saul he started to being called Paul.
After being converted he started spreading the Gospel of Christ, but unfortunately he started being persecuted by Nero, in which had sent two of his esquires to bring him the word of his death.
They, coming to Paul instructing the people, desired him to pray for them, that they might believe. This done, the soldiers came and led him out of the city to the place of execution, where he, after his prayers made, gave his neck to the sword.
After studying what happened to Paul I could realize that even people who used to do bad things, like persecute Christians, can be converted and saved with the God`s Holy word. It means that a person can always be saved if he believes in Christ and change the way he used to live, from darkness to the light.

  17. A martyr is someone that dies because of their religious beliefs. The great martyr that i have chosen for this weeks assignment is Stephen. The reason I have chosen this great man of Christ was because he was the very first Christian martyr recorded in the Bible. Stephen would go to the temple and witness to widows being cared for in jerusalem. Stephen was known for even preforming miraculous mircles such as healing people. When he preached many of the Jews argued with him saying that he was wrong in everything he did. The jew even conviced all the people that Stephens preaching went against all of that of moses and even the preachings of God. Many people believed the Jews even though that werent right. The Jews made Stephen go before a council that had the power to make life and death descions and while being tried for his so called crime he was still preaching. Sthephen was telling the ppeople of the whole story of the Jews going all the way back to Abraham. The fact that Stephen was still being a witness made the Jews even more mad and they began to scream and no longer listen to Stephen because they thought he was wrong. The Sanheidren decided that Stephen should be killed. They took him out side of the city and began to stone him. While he was being stoned, Stephen prayed and told God not to hold this sin that they were doing against them.
