Homework 4, Due Nov 30, 2012

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! Only a few weeks left in the semester, so be sure to keep up with your assignments! We'll be studying some very interesting history over the next few weeks, and I know you'll be interested in some of the individuals we discuss. One such individual is a true "Renaissance Man" - Galileo.

As most of you already know, Galileo was, among other things, a scientist who was tried for an unusual crime (by today's standards) - teaching "non-biblical" beliefs, namely that the earth orbited the sun! Although he was convicted and forced to publicly declare that he had been wrong, he was never tortured or imprisoned (his principle punishment was the requirement that he do penance, which his daughter did for him). Since no equipment had been invented that allowed anyone to see the orbits, both sides based their arguments on other things, such as math (both sides were wrong) and the interpretation of scriptures. So how did this get started?

As we learned previously, the discovery of ancient Greek and Roman history by the Crusaders absolutely revolutionized Europe. In a few short centuries Europe would go from being woefully primitive in comparison to the Arabs, Chinese and Indians (people from India), to being the dominant military, commercial, and educational force in the world. However, it's important to point out the the ancient Greeks and Romans weren't exactly foolproof - their own information was sometimes nothing more than an educated guess. The biggest perpetrator was Aristotle himself. The great man is responsible for so much wisdom and creativity, but his greatest contributions to history are probably the things he got wrong! For example, he believed that the heart circulated air through the body, not blood. For centuries, despite the increasing evidence to the contrary, many people refused to accept the fact that Aristotle was wrong. And he had another guess that was wrong also - the order of the universe.

Aristotle was at least inciteful enough to realize that many of the ancient myths about the night sky were wrong, but he was responsible for convincing many people that the earth stood still and the sun, moon and stars orbited around it. The Egyptian astronomer Ptolemy claimed to have proof that Aristotle was right (therefore the earth-centered theory was called the Ptolemaic Model). When this theory was brought back from the Crusades in the 1300s, many Europeans automatically accepted that it was true, and even found scripture that, the believed, backed up his assertions. For example, Psalm 93:1: “Thou hast fixed the earth immovable and firm ...” and Psalm 96:10: “He has fixed the earth firm, immovable ...”.

Although the 16th century astronomer Copernicus described a "heliocentric", or sun-centered, universe as being the only model that explained the movement of the stars, by the time people were exposed to this view the Ptolemaic Model was considered sacred. When Galileo Galilei came along, he wrote a book called "Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences" in which he had two smart characters (one believed the Copernican Model, the other was smart enough to listen to him) and one character that was obviously supposed to be simple (named Simplicio), and he argued for the geocentric model with ridiculous and shallow arguments. It was open opposition to what the Catholic Church held to be true, and the dumb character seemed to resemble the Pope (Galileo's longtime, and soon to be ex-, friend).

Galileo's trial in the 1630s was complex because a great deal of politics was involved and ended in the manner I mentioned earlier. Within fifty years of his death the Catholic Church reversed its decision and embraced the Copernican Model (of course, we know now that neither the sun nor the earth is fixed, nor is our solar system the center of the universe). Why it concerns us today is that we still face questions about the compatability of scripture and science. While many people today embrace faulty science in order to argue that the Bible isn't true, we Christians have seen over and over that science proves the Bible's teaching.

Your assignment this week is to consider the story of Galileo and answer the following questions: How should Christians have acted toward the Copernical Model in the 1600s, and why? If the scriptures in Psalms do not imply that the earth literally stands still, what do they mean? (you'll need to read the verses around them for context). And, finally, what can Christians do today to ensure that mistakes like these don't occur again?

I look forward to reading your answers. The requirements for this assignment are exactly as those that have preceded it. Thanks and have a good week!

  1. Psalm 93:1 says, “The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.” Psalm 96:10 says, “Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.” The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.” Psalm 93:1 is saying that the Lord is in control and can’t be removed from control. Psalm 96:10 talks about how God reigns and that he is sovereign and that it cannot be taken away from him.” These verses were obviously taken the wrong way. The two verses alone can make it seem like the earth stands still, but when you read the verses around them they are talking about the glory and power of God.
The Christians should have acted differently towards this model. But, then again, they had limited access to Bibles. Today, we can go to a bookstore or even Wal-Mart and get one, but then the people just didn’t have much access to them. Even if they did, not everyone could read. The priests and people who did have access also may not have taught the people right. So since that is what the people had been taught, they probably just thought it was the right thing to believe. Because they grew up believing that, I can see how it was hard to change their opinion because that’s all they had ever known. However, I don’t think they should have accepted the idea that they weren’t completely sure about. Even if some of the people didn’t have access, there were priests and people who did. Those certain people should have looked at the scripture in depth and proved them to be wrong. Today we have much more access to the Bible and how to research. If something like this were to come up again, we should research it and look at it in depth. That way we can understand what it’s really talking about because sometimes your first interpretation about a verse is totally wrong.

    1. You had a very good essay Summer, I really liked it and you had several very good well thought out points. You're right that people did have very limited access but there were people with access to the Word that should have done a better job in reading it and teaching it. They definetely could have done a better and more thourough job with it.

    3. You had a really good essay this week Summer. It was a really well written essay. I really like how you explained that most people didnt have access to the Bible and how easy it would be for those that did have it to misread it and teach it incorrectly.

  3. This week’s essay is a topic that is very important to how we live today because if today in our science classes what if we were taught that the sun orbited us? That would change a lot. Like how seasons work. How the sun rises and sets. We would have wrong ideas about these things. But in Galileo’s day the bible was interpreted as the universe revolving around us. But Galileo interpreted the scripture differently and started studying it and found proof. After proof. that we along with all the other planets in revolved around the sun. And eventually he told people what he was studying and what he thought and the word finally got out to the CHRISTIAN leaders and they tried to make him say he was wrong. But today with all our modern technology we know that Galileo was correct for saying that the planets revolve around the sun. And that the Christians should have more carefully interrupted the scripture in psalms because it does not say that the earth stands still. And when Galileo told them they were wrong they should have not just told him he was wrong. They should have looked into it and been open to new ideas. This is where the Christians went wrong. Christians today can use this for an example today if they think the bible means one thing they should be open for other Christians to guide them and have a reasonable debate about the scripture that one of them has miss interrupted. And hopefully one will change their mind to the correct interpretation of the scripture

    1. You're right Austin they should have looked more into it before telling him he was wrong because as we know today, he wasn't entirely wrong in what he thought. They should have took him more seriously and tried to listen rather than being too stubborn to change their ways.

  4. The questions asked in this weeks’ assignment are two questions that I believe are extremely relevant today. With the theories of evolution and others like there are a lot of people who choose to believe the science over the Bible or try to make the Bible fit in the science, only acknowledging the scriptures that benefit them. Psalm 93:1 in its entirety says “The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.” This verse does not mean that the Earth doesn’t move just that God has everything on Earth finished and set a certain way. Likewise with Psalms 96:10 “Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.” The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.” No one can change the patterns, systems or cycles God has created.
More than anything Christians need to read their Bible to keep the same mistakes from Galileo’s time happening. You can’t defend creation if you haven’t read Genesis, you can’t defend the possibility of the Grand Canyon happening from the flood if you’ve never read the story, you can’t defend Jesus’ virgin birth, life, death, resurrection and accent back to Heaven if you’ve never read it. Christians today also need to have a little compassion. Instead of coming across a scientologist and immediately screaming at them and telling them they’re wrong and condemning them you should try and persuade them gently but if they aren’t willing to see your way then show them love rather than hatred.

  6. In this week assignment I am going to talk about the Copernical model and how Christians should react and interpret it, after having read the Galileo Galilei and the Copernical Model text.
Christians should have acted toward Copernical Model in the 1600s like a new interpretation to the Bible verse, because it was proven that the Earth is not the center of the world, so what the Bible wanted to say with those verses is obviously different from what everybody thought it was , Psalms 93:1 “The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure” and Psalms 96:10 “Say among the nations, ‘The Lord reigns.’ The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity”.
When read what next to these scriptures you realize that it is not talking about the Solar System or the planets or the sun, it is talking about how God is powerful and strong , how he can change everything, how God cannot be removed of the power and how God is supreme and will never be taken away from the power.
Christians today should avoid taking isolate scripture and talking about them, when you do this a lot of miss interpretations could happen, you have to read what is around the scripture to take a final conclusion and make your point, sometimes some “random” scripture by itself can mean something completely different from what really means.

  7. Christians back in the 1600s should have acted very different to the Cpernical Model. However, most every Christian back in those days didnt have access to the Holy Bible. Most of the teaching that everyone was getting was coming from someone that has had read the Bible and know what they are talking about and they just might have mirinterprated the word and were teaching everyone wrong and all the people thought that what they were hearing was the truth. In Psalms 93:1 it says the world was firm and secure and in Psalms 96:10 the worls is establised, firmly and secure. If you just read these two scriptures its very easy to see how many people thought that the earth stood still. BUt in order to completly understand the scriptures of the Bible you cant just read one verse you must read verses before the particular verse and the verses after so you can understand the context and see actually what the verse is saying. In this instance the Bible is talking about the power of God and how strong and mighty he is not about how the world was made and how the world is in the solar system . However, you would not know that if you only read one particular verse out of Psalms. Today many more Christians have access to a Bible everyone has at least one Bible and some people have two or three if not four Bibles just laying around the house. Today the Bible is much more easier for the Christians to get. When we are faced with one of these science/biblical controversial topics we should go to the Bible and read exactly what it says and says around the particular verses you are reading.

    3. Good essay Jacob. I agree when you read the two verses alone it is very easy for them to assume it was saying the earth stood still but when you read the verses around it, it gives everything a totally different meaning.

  8. Wow what an in depth assignment this is. In Psalms 104:5 says, “He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.” Psalms 61:2 says, “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” The first scripture in Psalms is very forward and easily understood. It’s very basic saying that God set the foundations and it can never be moved or messed with. The second Psalm I picked is a little vague about the earth not moving. If you think about a rock it is strong and heavy and it won’t move and obviously the earth has a lot of rock on it. This scripture is also great for comforting one another. Education was a thing back then that was not common people didn’t know much and they didn’t read. Also, this is the time that we were talking about in class and how close it was when the translations first began to being printed. Therefore, Christians would be challenged. As the Christians though you would think that it would be obvious of God’s creation and His magnificent skill and design when he made the earth and put it in place. How will this not occur again? As Christians, I think, we should be excited to look into the Bible and learn many new things. That’s why God inspired people to write it, right? Yes He did, and we should not only research it but dig in the Word and see what He says.

    4. Great job on you essay, Bethany! I think you brought up a great point about the translations. Use to people did not have a copy of the Bible for themselves which made it very easy for the church to rule over the people's ideas and opinions. I agree that this week's assignment was in depth and it wa great to read your opinions.

  9. This week’s assignment was very thought provoking in my opinion. Obviously, I believe that the Christians at that time should have acted differently concerning the Copernical Model. With this being said, people in that time period didn't have the access to the Bible like we have today and their knowledge was extremely limited. Honestly, if someone told me something different contrary to what I had been taught all my life, I suppose I would be skeptical as well! I believe that Psalms 96:10 (“Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns ” The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity”) and Psalms 93:1 (The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure ”) didn’t mean that the Earth was never moving, but the verses show how strong and mighty and unchanging the God we serve is! The God we serve is so amazing and powerful and these verses show that nothing will ever stop what He has planned. I think these verses are pretty comforting and encouraging because as Christians we know that no matter what God has been, is, and will always be the same and unchanging and immovable. Anyway, to prevent things like the miscommunications of this time period from happening again in the future, we as Christians need to pray for wisdom and understanding and also study the Word extensively to defend and stay strong in our faith.
    Thank you,

    1. Great job on your essay, Rebecca! Like Bethany you also brought up the point of translations. I think this is an excellent point because without the Word of God as a people we would be very ignorant and would be careful not to stray from the teachings of our childhood. In those times it was easy for the church to keep a standard and an opinion for all to agree with since they were the only ones with a Bible, besides the extremely wealthy. Again, great job on your essay!

  10. This assignment this week kinda made you think a little bit more and it is very important for today and how people should act. I think that they should have acted differently to the Copernical Model. They didn't really have a lot of ways or access to the Bible. Really the only people who knew the Bible were people who read it before but they probs misread it, or thought it as saying something it wasn't. So whatever they heard from these people they would have to had thought it was right because they didn't know any better. I mean now you can go almost anywhere and but a Bible, but back then you obviously couldn't. But if somebody told me I was wrong about something I had been taught all my life I would be a little upset. So I could see why it would be a little hard for them to start to believe it. But if they didn't believe in it like all the way they shouldn’t have been like okay whatever I'll believe it. They should have gone to people there who had access to it and asked them. In Psalm 93:1 says, “The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.” Psalm 96:10 say, “Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns.” So if anything likes this would happen again all we need to do is study the Bible and be able to believe in what we read.

  11. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16). According to this verse, our teachings must be based the Word of God. Sadly, many people who consider themselves to be “Christians” have came up with false doctrines and teachings and have used sort Bible passages (sometimes only one verse) taken out of context to support their beliefs. This was the case during the 1600’s. As the Crusaders brought back a wealth of knowledge from the Middle East including many ideas from the Greeks and Romans, many of these ideas were added to the beliefs and teaching of the Church. One such teaching was the Greek model of the universe, which taught that the earth was in the center of the universe and that everything else revolved around it. Two verses that they found to support these teachings are Psalms 93:1 and Psalm 96:10. When Galileo taught the Copernical Model, which taught that the sun was in the center of the universe, his beliefs were condemned as heresy by the Church because of the scriptures that they tock out of context. I think that Christians should have responded to the Capernical Theory with more openness and a willingness to examine what the “proof scriptures” truly meant.
I believe that these verses actually mean that God has a plan for the world that cannot be changed by man. In the end, it is God who is master over the earth and his will for the earth cannot be shaken.
To insure that mistakes like this one don’t happen again I think that we need to stay grounded in the Word of God. The reason that so many Christians fall into false teachings are because they don’t know what the Bible actually says, instead they are spoon-fed the same false doctrines for their whole lives. Christians also must pray for wisdom and discernment about all things. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”

  12. In the 1600s the Christians should have at least researched the idea of the Copernical Model because new revelations can be discovered at any time. It's also not wrong to look into different scientific models/theories if they do not contradict God's word.
In Psalms the meaning of "the earth is secure" means that the earth was created by a majestic, stable, and trustworthy God. “The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.” Psalm 93:1. "Say among the nations, 'The Lord reigns.'The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity." Psalm 96:10. To ensure that Christians do not make this mistake again we must make sure that our beliefs are truly Biblical and that God wants us to discover, invent, and have dominion over the earth. "And God said, Let aus bmake cman in our dimage, after our elikeness: and let them have fdominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." Genesis 1:26. Also as Christians I think we should be leaders in the development of the scientific community by learning how to improve our situation on earth and most importantly honoring him. "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 1 Corinthians 10:31.

  13. This weeks assignment was kinda hard and more difficult than all the other ones because you had to think. The Copernican model was it the earth centered model of the universe refined by Ptolemy. Copernicus had two main reasons for asserting that the sun was the center of the solar system. The first reason was that, while the Ptolemaic model was good at predicting the positions of the planets, it wasn’t precise, and just got worse and worse over the years. Another reason was that Copernicus didn’t like the fact that the Ptolemaic model had big epicycles. The Christians should’ve reacted differently than what they did. What the model basically is is yeah is the model of the solar system in which the sun is in the center and the planets orbit it. Copernicas believed in Heliocentrism while the early christians believed in the Geocentric model. The christians didn’t really have much access to the bible because there were so few in existence. This was before the invention of the printing press making it difficult to find bibles. Even if they had a bible, they most likely couldn’t read it. Very few people could read that weren’t priests. So, they couldn’t just sit down and read and study scripture. Psalm 93:1 says, “The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.” They didn’t really know enough about the bible to make accurate assumptions.
