The War of the Roses was fought in England from 1455 to 1487 between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The war got its name from the badges of both of the sides. The Yorkist badge was the white rose and the Lancastrians used the red rose. This war consisted of many hard fought battles one of which was The Battle of Towton. This battle took place on March 29, 1461. There were five reasons for the War of the Roses: 1) both houses were direct descendants of king Edward III; the Lancastrian king surrounded himself with unpopular nobles; 3) the civil unrest of the population; 4) powerful lords had their own army; and 5) the mental problems of King Henry VI The Yorkist forces attacked the Lancastrians during a snowstorm. The Yorkist had the advantage because they used the snowstorm and the direction of the wind to help them in this battle. The wind hel the Yorkist,s archers to shoot much farther than that of the opponent. The Lancastrians knew that the wind was against and that there was only thing they could do, and that was to charge. So they charged the Yorkist forces. The Lancastrians looked to be having the upper hand and were putting a strain on the Yorkist forces. The battle looked to be almost over until the duke of Norfolk, John Mowbray arrived and brought reinforcements and the Yorkist regained the control. The battle went on for serveral hours that day and finally the Yorkist army consisting of 36,000 men defeated the Lancastrian army that consisted of 40,000 men.
ReplyDeleteGood job, Jacob!
DeleteThe Wars of the Roses were a series of battles fought between the House of Lancaster and the House of York, which were two rivals of the House of Plantagenets. They both wanted the throne of England. These prominent wars were fought between 1455 and 1485. However, the fighting started even before and delayed after the wars became official. These battles were fought in England, Wales, and Calais and included several important leaders such as Richard, Duke of York; Edward IV of England,
ReplyDeleteRichard III of England, Henry VI of England, Edward of Westminster, and Henry VII of England. The name for the wars was based on the colors of the two sides: the red rose for the people of Lancaster and the white rose for the people of York. There were several main points to the conflicts of the Wars of Roses. For example, both houses were descendants of King Edward III. Also, most of the people in both houses were at civil unrest. This played a prominent role in these wars. The war began with a quarrel between Richard II and his cousin, Henry Bolingbroke. As a result, Richard II was murdered and Henry became king Henry IV. Richard's murder sparked these civil wars, which continued until king Henry IV's son ascended the throne as Henry V and showed a great deal of peace to the people. Upon Henry V's early death, the wars continued. Henry's son, Henry VI, who led the Lancastrians, was rivaled by the Yorks. Success in the wars staggered for many years, until the Yorkists became victorious, and Edward IV came to power. Upon the death of Edward, his brother Richard became King Richard III.
The Lancastrian way of life was then taken up by a relative of the family, Henry Tudor. He invaded England and defeated the Yorks at the Battle of Bosworth Field.
The Wars of the roses happened in England for 32 years, 1455-1487, between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The name “Wars of the Roses” is based on the badges used by the two sides, the red rose represented the Lancastrians and the white rose represented the Yorkists.
DeleteThe causes that made this war to happen were the following: 1) both houses were direct descendents of king Edward III; 2) the ruling Lancastrian king, Henry VI, surrounded himself with unpopular nobles; 3) the civil unrest of much of the population; 4) the availability of many powerful lords with their own private armies; and 5) the untimely episodes of mental illness by king Henry VI.
A very important person that made part of the history of the “War of the roses” was the king Henry V. This noble was born in Sep. 1387 at Monmouth in England, and died at Aug. 21 in 1422 at Bois de Vincennes in France. He ruled about 9 years, 1413-1422. And had a child called Henry VI.
Henry V was a member of the House of Lancaster. He spent most of his reign campaigning in France in order to regain territories that were claimed by his ancestors.
The highlight of his three invasions of France was the Battle of Agincourt, fought on October 25, 1415, it was at the same time of the Hundred Year`s war. Henry crushed a much larger French army leaving him in control of Northern France. He died at the age of 35 of an unknown illness, leaving the crown to his infant son, Henry VI.
Very good job on your essay, Mckenzie!
DeleteYou did a wonderful job on your assignment, McKenzie! Your essay was very well written and thought out. You also very nicely explained what the war was, who the people were, and how they were involved in it. I didn’t know that even after the war was already over there was still fighting going on. You as well made several factual and valid points in your report. Outstanding work, McKenzie!!!
DeleteNice work on your assignment, Eduardo! I can tell that you have put a lot of thought into your essay. I like your use of organization in the way you put your five different points for the causes of the war. I didn’t know that Henry V died at a young age of only thirty-five, and that he had left behind his infant son, also known as Henry VI. The conflict between Henry VI and Richard, duke of York, ultimately led to the War of the Roses.
DeleteThe War of the Roses was a civil war fought in England between the years 1455 and 1487. For thirty-two years the houses of Lancaster and the houses of York fought against each other over the crown. The war is called the war of the roses because both sides were represented by badges that resembled roses- a white rose for the house of Lancaster and a red rose for the house of York. The war was started over a dispute to the throne as both houses were of the direct line of King Edward III. The king at the time, King Henry VI, who was of the house of Lancaster, had put many unpopular nobles around him. The Nobles, who all had armies of their own, picked sides and sent troops to go fight for their side.
ReplyDeleteThe important individual I chose to write about was King Edward IV. Edward was of the house of York. He assumed the throne in 1461 after defeating the Lancastrians at Mortimor’s Crossing. When Edward came to the throne, he fulfilled the dream of his father, Richard, duke of York, of putting a Yorkist on the throne. He married Elizabeth Woodville in 1470. After not being able to gather a large enough army to fight the Lancastrian army, he fled to Holland in 1970 but returned a year later to help lead his army to victory at the battle of Tewkesbury. He later ordered the execution Lancastrian King Henry VI. Edward IV died in 1483. Later that same year, both of his sons were murdered.
Good job Bobss! your essays are always very interesting and full of information that nobody else would think about using!
DeleteThe war of the roses was a bunch of civil wars fought in England from 1455 to 1487 between house of Lancaster and the house of York. The wars included more than sixty weeks of large-scale campaigning in England. The first battle of st. Albans was the start of the civil war in England. This was when Edward IV took power. The war of the roses takes their name from the symbols of Yorkshire, rose and Lancaster, the red rose. The next battle, Battle of Northampton started on July 10, 1460 whenever The Yorkist army captured King Henry and forced him to be a slave. The Third was the battle of Wakefield, Richard I was killed at the battle. His son, Edward of York, then took control. It happened on August 7 in an attempt to claim the thrown of England. After the battle, Henry Tudor was crowned. He was crowned in 1485. He married Elizabeth York in 1486 to stremgthen his claim to thrown. He also built the Richmond Place and rebuilt the Winston chapel. He was a pretty awesome king I suppose. But, sadly, he died young in April 1509 at the age of 52. This marks the 118 year reign of the tudor dynasty in england. Burgundy sided with Edward during the wars. The last battle took place in 1487, This battle was the most famous. It was the battle of Stoke, which Henry VII fought against Lambert Simnel. The wars in total lasted thirty-two years. The end.
ReplyDeleteGood job on your essay Lexie! it was quite interesting and different!
DeleteGood essay, Lexie! I like how you explained some of the battles. It was very interesting and informative.
DeleteThe War of the Roses was one of the most historical events of Medieval Europe. It was a series of wars fought from 1457 to 1487. The name of the war came from the badges on both sides. The Lancastrians used a red rose and the Yorkists used white roses. The war began in 1455 when the Duke of York challenged the current king’s rights to the throne. Richard and the king were both descendents of King Edward III. The fact that Richard, Duke of York, challenged the king’s rights to the throne was not the only reason for the start of the war, the ruling king, Henry VI, surrounding himself with unpopular nobles, there was much civil disorder among the people, many powerful lords had their own private armies, and King Henry VI had episodes of mental illness. The opening battle of the war was the Battle of St. Albans. In this battle, Richard defeated Henry VI and also killed the Lancastrian ally, who was a main supporter of Henry VI. In early 1460, Richard was killed in the Battle of Wakefield. In 1471, Henry VI died in the Battle of Barnet. Then his son, known as Henry the Tudor, became king and fought five more battles. The final battle was in 1487 and King Henry VII killed those who fought for the Yorkists.
ReplyDeleteGood job Summer! your essay was very informative and interesting!
Delete. The Wars of the Roses were a series of civil wars fought in medieval England from 1455 to 1487. For thirty - two years, a bitter struggle for the English throne was waged between two branches on the same family, the House of York and the House of Lancaster, both descended from EdwardIII. The War of the Roses began in 1455, when many barons resented the way that the Lancaster family had seized the throne in 1399 and felt that Henry V, IV or VIwere not the rightful kings. According to the barons, the York family, cousins of the Lancasters, were truly entitled to reign. The battle of Bosworth is one of the most important battles in English history. It was was fought on 22nd August, 1485. One of the most significant battles ever to be fought on English soil, it sounded the death knell of the House of Plantagenet. The battle was fought between the armies of the last Yorkist king, Richard III and his Tudor challenger for the throne, Henry, Earl of Richmond, later to become King Henry VII, who represented the claims of the rival House of Lancaster. After the battle, Henry Tudor was crowned as King Henry VII, marking the beginning of the 118-year reign of the Tudor dynasty in England. The most ironic thing about the whole situation was that Henry Vll married Elizabeth of York , who was representing the York family. This marriage united the two families. Henry then created the Tudor rose, containing both the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster. It symbolized the end of a struggle between York and Lancaster.
ReplyDeleteFrom 1455 to 1487 there was a series of wars called Wars of the Roses. Of course to have a war you have to have rivalry. They fought over the throne of England. Please understand that within this period of time, sporadic wars happened it wasn’t one huge big war. These wars were associated with the White Rose of York and Red Rose of Lancaster. The White Rose of York is pretty much self- explanatory. It was a white rose that symbolized the House of York. The Red Rose of Lancaster was also self-explanatory. Some important people in these wars were: Richard III, Edward V, Richard Neville, Richard, Duke of York, Henry VII, Henry VI, Edmond Beaufort, Margaret of Anjou, Henry Stafford, and Edward IV. There are SOO many battles and too much for me to talk about so here are all the battles: the 1st battle of St. Albans, the battle of Blore Heath, the battle of Northampton, the battle of Wakefield, the battle of Mortimer’s cross, the 2nd battle of St. Albans, the battle of Ferry Bridge, the Battle of Towton, the battle of Hedgeley Moor, the battle of Hexham, the battle of Edgecote Moor, the battle of Losecote Field, the battle of Barnet, the battle of Tewkebury, the battle of Bosworth, and the battle of Stoke. If you would like to know more about ALL of these battles feel free to look them up. There is so much information for all.
ReplyDeleteBethany, you did such a great job on your essay! It seemed very well thought out and well written!
DeleteGreat job on your essay, Bethany! When I was researching for my essay I didn't come across the significance of the roses, I think that was a great touch! There were so many battles and so many people involved in the Wars of Roses. I think you did a great job writting your essay, and as always it was well researched.
DeleteFor this week’s assignment I chose to write about King Richard III. Born on October 2, 1452 in Fotheringhay Castle and was the youngest of eight children. His father was Richard Plantagenet, 3rd Duke of York. Richard spent several years of his childhood at Middleham Castle in Wensleydale under his cousins “tutelage”. While he was there he developed a close friendship with a woman by the name of Anne Neville who he would later marry. His father died when Richard was very young. Richard married in 1469 to anne… Later during the reign of Richard III he demonstrated his loyalty and his skill as a military commander. He was rewarded with large estates in the northern parts of England. He became one of the richest nobles in England. Richard controlled the northern parts of England until Edwards IV’s death. There and also in the city of York he was regarded with much love and affections. He raised the churches at Middleham and Barnard Castle to collegiate status. Richard and Anne had one son and one daughter. In August 1485, Richard met the outnumbered forces of Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth Field. Richard was riding what was called a white courser. Richard’s army has been sized/estimated at about 8,000 and Henry’s was about 5,000 (Exact numbers are really known). Richard fought bravely and very ably during this battle. Throwing people off of their horses in a jousting competition. Later Richard was boxed in and killed by the opposing. – thank youuu
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your essay, Amanda! I also did my essay on Richard. I must say I did not discover as much information of him as you did, great job! Richard Neville is known for Warwick castle and, as you said, to have been a great and fearsome fighter in the war. Again, great job on writing your essay.
DeleteGreat job on your essay Amanda! You did a great job and really enhanced my education of the war of the roses! You did an amazing job!
DeleteFor this week’s assignment I chose to write to on the King Richard the Third. This king, born on October 2 1452 in England, ruled from 1483-1485. He fought during the War of the Roses which lasted between 1455-1487, but he is most famous for fighting for Edward the fourth in the Battle of Tewksbury and the Barnett battle. When his brother, Edward the fourth died, he took his children, his brother Richard, and Henry the fifth. According to http://warsoftheroses.com, the brothers were kept in the Tower of London, and were eventually murdered in 1483. After the deaths, Richard the Third assumed the crown. His reign, lasting only a few years, ended when he was killed in battle by Henry the seventh at Bosworth Field.
ReplyDeleteNow, for a bit of history about the War of the Roses. This very significant war, which as I mentioned earlier lasted between the years of 1455-1487, was fought between the Plantagenet kings or the houses of York and the houses of Lancaster for the throne of England. Each “house” represented a rose. The house of York was the white rose and the house of Lancaster was the red rose. After all of the fighting, the new king went to Henry Tudor of the house of Lancaster, after the fall of the house of York’s Richard the Third. However, due to the marriage of Elizabeth of the house of York to Henry the fifth in January of 1486 , the two houses were united.
Thank you,
Rebecca Dunmore
The War of Roses was fought in the late 1400s between the House of Lancaster and the House of York in Britain. For my essay I am going to explain Richard Neville's impact on the War of Roses. Richard Neville was the first earl of Warwick. Throughout Neville's life he picked up the nickname of "The Kingmaker." Richard Neville was born November 22, 1428 and died April 14, 1471. Richard's nickname "The Kingmaker" came about in the 16th century; about one-hundred years after his lifetime. Neville received this nickname on the account of his role during the War of Roses. Richard Neville was the arbiter of power during the war, which means he decided wether the king would be from the House of Lancaster or from the House of York. The first battle "The Kingmaker" joined was St. Alban, Hertfordshire, in 1455. Richard Neville, the first earl of Warwick,"The Kingmaker" dealt closely with the making of two York kings, Henry VI and Edward IV. Neville had trouble with the latter Edward IV though because after only three years Edward IV decided he had no use for Richard Neville's help and began to become independent. Richard Neville's role during the War of Roses was very important because he held some power over the kings and most importantly which house the kings would come from. Edward IV's independence drove Neville of Warwick out of Britain into France. Warwick returned though and took Edward's power and once again became a huge force in the War of Roses and the cultural development of Britain.
ReplyDeleteAs in any civil war, opposing sides feel they are justified in fighting for their cause. The War of the Roses was no exception. The War of the Roses was actually a series of civil wars rather than one war. Both the House of York and the House of Lancaster believed they should rule. Both houses were descended from King Edward III. Richard Plantagenet, duke of York, was a very interesting character. He originally had represented King Henry IV as Lieutenant of France and Lieutenant of Ireland. Because he was a descendant of King Edward III on both his mother’s side and his father’s side, he felt that he truly should be in power. With King Henry VI becoming mentally ill it is not hard to see how Richard could take control. Richard had returned to England when one of the King’s advisors, the duke of Somerset, had cost England most of its French possessions. This and other clashes with the throne led to the First Battle of St. Albans in 1455. In this battle, Richard Plantagenet defeated the House of Lancaster. At this time rule by the House of York was ushered in. For almost a decade the House of York ruled. Henry VI did recover from his illness and came back to rule for the brief period of 1470-1471. However, Richard’s son, Edward IV returned to England and had Henry VI executed. In this way, the House of York had once again defeated the House of Lancaster to resume the throne of England. Richard, duke of York, died at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460. The desire for power evidenced by Richard spurred much of the conflict during the War of the Roses.
ReplyDeleteGreat essay, Sarah. It was very informative and very well written. You explained the war very well.
DeleteThanks, Summer!
DeleteGreat job on your essay, Sarah! I also wrote my essay on the highly interesting Richard Neville. He was the proprietor of Warwick castle, I do believe. Your essay was written very well and, as always, full of well-researched information. Again, great job on your essay!
DeleteThe War of Roses of was fought in England from 1455 to 1487. It essentially was a power struggle between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. There were several reasons for the fighting but the main reasons were that both houses were descendent of the same house, the ruling Lancastrian king, Henry VI, choose to surround himself with unpopular nobles, most of the population was unhappy with the way things were, many powerful lords had access to their own private armies, and king Henry VI was ridden with mental illness episodes.
ReplyDeleteOne of the main kings during the war of roses was Edward IV. He was king twice during the war of roses, 1461-1470 and 1471-1483. Edward IV went on to the throne in 1461 making him the first York to get the throne. He fought at the battle of Ludford which he ran after to Calais with the earls of Warwick and Salisbury. Edward defeated the Lancastrians at Mortimor's Cross and was named king in March 1461. He married Elizabeth Woodville in 1464 which led to several issues. Unable to buikd a big enough army to fight the Lancastrians he ran away to Holland in 1470. A year later he returned and defeated the Lancastrian forces during the battle of Tewkesbury. After his death in 1483 he left two sons, Edward V and Richard, too hopefully (though they did not) assume the throne. Both eventually were executed at the tower of London.
Good job Alisha!
